Pete Zeppetella joins us on the podcast to talk about his journey through the trades, starting at just 13 years old in carpentry. He has always excelled at working with his hands so he went from carpentry to mechanics to framing to carpentry again to flooring to CNC Machining to building airplanes and everything in between. Eventually he landed on building scaffolding, which is what he does now. This, however, has all been part of a bigger path that ultimately led to him starting Zepps Gear. A specially designed garment that enables workers to wear their safety harnesses in a more comfortable convenient way on the job. I took her memoir class back in 2003 at UMass Amherst and we always managed to stay in touch over the years. She's a friend and a treasured mentor to me, so I'm delighted to speak with her about her career and her latest book To the New Owners: A Martha's Vineyard Memoir. Maddy is also the author of Uphill Walkers: Portrait of a Family, In These Girls Hope is a Muscle, which was named one of Sports Illustrated's 100 best sports books of the 20th century, The Heart is an Instrument: Portraits in Journalism. And her piece that would eventually become the book for In These Girls, is the lead piece in “The Stories We Tell,” an anthology showcasing the best women journalists. We talk about her early career and a pivotal moment that pointed her toward feature writing vs. hard news, how she likes to cut against the grain when vetting stories, judging for the Pulitzer Prize, and many of the influential books that helped form her self-guided apprenticeship. Jill Tarter holds the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, CA where she also served as the former director of the Center for SETI Research. She was also a Project Scientist for NASA’s SETI program and has conducted a number of observational programs at radio observatories worldwide. Since funding for NASA’s SETI program was cut in 1993, she has worked to secure private funding so that SETI may continue to explore.    In this conversation with Point of Inquiry host Josh Zepps, Tarter discusses the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, how we go about looking for it, and why the search is so important to humanity. US-based Australian political satirist, TV & radio host and podcaster Josh Zepps recently visited Mediaweek. Zepps was the presenter and co-executive producer of Australian Idol's behind-the-scenes component, Idol Backstage. On radio, he won an Australian Commercial Radio Award (ACRA) for his syndicated satirical comedy sketches on the Fairfax Radio network.
