Then I get into Anthropic's release of Claude Fable 5, its most powerful publicly available AI model yet, and what it means for trust, accuracy, pricing, and accountability as AI moves deeper into business operations.

Send us Fan MailAI is getting louder, faster, and more impressive by the week and that can make kids wonder what's left for humans to do. We wanted to bring a calmer, more real-world answer: the future still needs people who can build, fix, and make things when life breaks in unpredictable ways.I'm joined by Archie D. Nettles, Jr., creator of Trades to the Rescue and the TradesTopolis universe. He writes kids as the heroes of infrastructure, the ones who solve the problems that actually keep homes and cities working. We talk about what “skilled trades” really means, why plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, carpenters, and mechanics are often the unsung heroes, and why these careers deserve the same early attention kids give to astronauts and doctors. Then we get into the AI question everyone asks: can robots really do these jobs? Archie explains why dexterity, tight spaces, and human trust make many trade tasks hard to automate, especially when you need help at 9 p.m. on a Sunday. We also flip the script to show how AI can be a teammate: faster planning, parts lookup, real-time estimates, better customer answers, and safer work with augmented reality that helps visualize what's behind a wall or how electrical currents flow.If your kid loves Legos, inventing, fixing toys, cooking, or asking “how does that work,” this is a confidence boost and a roadmap. Subscribe, share with a family who's thinking about careers, and leave a review so more kids can hear that there's more than one way to be smart.Resources:Follow Torque and Tori's AdventureGet the book.Follow on Instagram Support the showHey parents and teachers, if you want to stay on top of the AI news shaping your kids' world, subscribe to our weekly AI for Kids Weekly newsletter:https://aiforkidsweekly.beehiiv.com/Help us become the #1 podcast for AI for Kids, parents, teachers, and families.Like our content? patreon.com/AiDigiTalesGet or gift the book “AI… Meets… AI”Social Media & Contact: Website: www.aidigitales.comEmail: contact@aidigitales.comFollow Us: InstagramBooks on Amazon or Free AI WorksheetsListen, rate, and subscribe! Apple PodcastsAmazon MusicSpotifyYouTubeOther

This week on The Food Professor Podcast, Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois sit down with Don Hill, Chairman of Sucro, for a rare inside look at one of the most significant investments in Canada's food manufacturing sector in decades. Sucro has quickly become one of North America's fastest-growing sugar companies, and its newly built Ontario refinery marks the first major new sugar-refining investment in Canada in generations. Don explains why Canada became Sucro's first major international investment market, how the company is challenging conventional thinking in a traditionally conservative industry, and why innovation, reinvestment, and operational efficiency are becoming critical competitive advantages in food manufacturing. The conversation explores the strategic role sugar plays in food production beyond sweetness, including shelf life, texture, functionality, product formulation, and cost management. Don also discusses how Sucro is navigating labour shortages, global trade disruptions, tariffs, supply chain volatility, and geopolitical uncertainty while building what he believes is the most modern and competitive sugar refinery in North America. Michael and Sylvain also dive into the impact of GLP-1 weight-loss medications on food consumption with Don, the opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence in manufacturing, and why Canada remains an attractive destination for food production despite growing trade tensions and policy uncertainty. Don shares his perspective on the future of food manufacturing investment, North American competitiveness, and Sucro's plans for growth over the next decade. Before the interview, the hosts tackle another packed week of food and agriculture news. They discuss Canada's economic outlook and the debate over recession terminology, new research comparing household food spending across G20 countries, and the ongoing rise in food insecurity and food bank usage across Canada. The discussion also covers soaring tomato prices linked to North American trade disruptions, new revelations surrounding the Canada Royal Milk infant formula facility in Kingston, and concerns about transparency within Canada's supply-managed dairy sector. The episode also reflects on Metro CEO Eric La Flèche's retirement announcement, examining his lasting impact on Canadian grocery retailing and congratulating the highly skilled and experienced Marc Giroux on becoming the new CEO. Finally, Michael and Sylvain explore how some farmers are finding new revenue streams through YouTube and digital content creation, demonstrating the remarkable adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit of modern agriculture. When Jack Clark talks about building 180 Water Franchising, he focuses on one core idea: creating a replicable model in an industry that has never had one. The water well business has always been built around owner-operators — small crews, no national presence, and a retiring workforce with no clear succession path. Jack saw that gap and built the first franchise in the industry to fill it. In this episode of the DealQuest Podcast, Corey Kupfer sits down with Jack Clark, founder and owner of 180 Water Franchising, to discuss what it actually takes to franchise a skilled trades business from the ground up — and why this particular market is uniquely positioned for franchise growth. Jack breaks down the full investment and fee structure for franchisees, from the approximately $250,000 startup cost covering a fully stocked service truck to the 6% gross sales royalty, 2% brand fund, and $45,000 franchise fee. He explains why the first franchisee in each new state gets that fee waived, and why suppliers are set up with 90-day terms to ease early operations. The conversation also covers the internal dynamics of running a franchise network, including Jack's weekly Thursday calls with all franchisees, why the direction of learning inside the network has shifted from franchisor to franchisees, and what he calls the "stupid rule policy" — the principle that if a rule has to exist, the underlying system needs to change. Corey and Jack also discuss the emotional and financial reality of investing ahead of growth, including the bittersweet experience of outgrowing your original banker and building an entirely new team to support the next level of the business. This episode is packed with practical insights for entrepreneurs considering franchising as a growth vehicle, skilled trades business owners wondering whether their operation has a replicable system inside it, and anyone evaluating franchise investment opportunities in industries outside the traditional food and service categories. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why the water well industry is structurally positioned for franchise growth right now How Jack identified the moment his business became genuinely franchisable The full investment, fee structure, and territory model for 180 Water franchisees Why most franchisees stop worrying about having enough work within their first thirty days What the "stupid rule policy" means in practice and why it matters for franchisee satisfaction How investing ahead of growth temporarily dips profits — and why that's unavoidable Why being first in an untapped industry is a competitive moat, not a warning sign THE FIRST FRANCHISE IN THE WATER WELL INDUSTRY Jack confirmed it directly in this conversation: "No one's ever franchised the water well industry. I think a lot of guys have talked about it, but it's one of those things that until you really start to unfold it, you don't really realize how many layers there are to it." 180 Water now operates in five states with ten franchisees and is expanding nationally. When demand outpaced their Texas truck supplier, Jack didn't accept the bottleneck — he started manufacturing his own service trucks under the PumpEx Voice brand, turning a supply constraint into an entirely new business line. Last month, Mark Carney's Liberal government announced a $6-billion plan to help recruit, train and hire up to 100,000 new skilled tradespeople over the next five years. The plan acknowledges a longstanding concern: that Canada has an urgent need for more carpenters, plumbers, millwrights and heavy equipment operators.Among the new initiatives is a $5,000 bonus when a worker completes their Red Seal certification, a process Ottawa also wants to modernize by introducing online exams, digital logbooks and creating a single national registered apprenticeship number. On this week's episode of Village Media's Closer Look podcast, we revisit a recent interview with Ian Howcroft of Skills Ontario, an organization that empowers youth to explore careers in skilled trades and technologies.Reach out to Frisco and Scott

In this episode, Madelyn O'Farrell speaks with Santosh Sankar about the broken skilled trades pipeline and its impact on America's push to reindustrialize. Santosh traces the problem back to the 1983 “A Nation at Risk” report and subsequent policy shifts that de-emphasized vocational education, fueled stigma around trades, and dismantled employer-school partnerships. He highlights looming shortages in critical industrial roles such as welders, pipefitters, millwrights, industrial electricians, and CNC machinists, noting that most current hiring is just replacing retirees and that training timelines make quick fixes impossible. The conversation explores why these industrial trades are hard to automate, the cultural and structural barriers to attracting new talent, and the urgent need for employer-led, modernized vocational training models—potentially even “vocational training as a service”—to close the skills gap and unlock the promise of America's industrial renaissance. Highlights from their conversation include: Historical Roots of the Skills Trade Pipeline Crisis (0:26) How 1980s Education Policy Undermined Vocational Trades (1:09) Optics, Stigma, and Cultural Bias Against Skilled Trades (5:30) The Big 5 Industrial Trades Driving Reindustrialization (6:28) Aging Workforce, Replacement Demand, and Automation Limits (7:53) Rethinking Vocational Ed Capacity, Equipment, and Instruction (11:30) Role of Employers in Rebuilding Training and Apprenticeships (15:28) Vertically Integrated Training Models and Credentialing (15:50) Investment Case and “Vocational Training as a Service” (19:04) Regional Labor Constraints and Final Thoughts on Opportunity (21:27) Dynamo Ventures is a venture firm backing founders upgrading the physical economy. For women working in skilled trades, running into someone who knows what the work feels like doesn't happen every day, Sisterhood of Trades was founded to build that connection. Through platforms like Discord, LinkedIn and TikTok, the community is creating a space where women in the industry can connect with peers, share opportunities, find mentorship and grow their careers. Recorded live from The Manufacturing Exchange at ARTISAN works in Rochester, NY, for the second time hosting the podcast, Chris sits down with CEO Nush Ahmed, and Chief Strategy Officer Brooke Laing to talk about how their fast growing community is supporting women working across machining, pipe welding, mechanics, scaffolding, ship fitting and other areas of industry. Together, they run through how an informal and unnamed Snapchat group has evolved into an active network connecting tradeswomen across skillsets and regions. They also talk about the younger generation's approach to networking, and Nush and Brooke explain why sharing the truth of industrial work on social media always lands with a modern audience. For manufacturers thinking about workforce development, leaders trying to better engage women in industry, or those looking to understand how modern trade communities are forming and growing, this episode offers a look at how one fast-growing organization is strengthening connection across the skilled trades. In this episode, find out: Why Sisterhood of Trades was first formed around the reality that many women in trades are still the only woman on their team or in their shop How the early idea grew from a Snapchat group to a structured and organized Discord-based community providing support and connection How the community connects tradeswomen across different roles, skillsets, regions and life stage so they can learn from like-minded people and access opportunities How Nush Ahmed's path from CNC operating to marketing and enablement shows the career mobility that is promoted through the organization Why Brooke Laing believes showing real life day to day content on social media platforms encourages both participation and retention in the trade industry How taking a modern approach to outreach and engagement performs better than more traditional methods for increasing interest in the trades How mentorship inside the community works, from students making decisions, to career transitions and progression within the skilled trades Enjoying the show? Episode 340 of The Business Development Podcast features a powerful conversation with Manja Horner, founder of Boost LD, on the hidden skilled trades crisis happening across North America. As experienced tradespeople retire, companies are losing decades of knowledge, systems, instincts, and expertise that were never properly documented or passed down. Kelly and Manja dive deep into workforce development, retention, onboarding, leadership, and why the future of the trades depends on capturing and transferring knowledge before it disappears forever. This episode also explores how AI is changing the future of workforce training and why companies need to rethink how they develop people. From building internal “YouTube style” knowledge systems to creating better onboarding and career development processes, Manja shares practical strategies that can dramatically improve retention, performance, and long-term growth. If you lead a company with people in the field, this episode will completely change the way you think about training and the future of business.Key Takeaways:Skilled trades companies are not just facing a labour shortage, they are facing a knowledge transfer crisis. When experienced tradespeople retire without documenting what they know, decades of wisdom can disappear forever.Training is not just information sharing, it requires practice, feedback, repetition, and measurable behaviour change.Companies need to stop relying on informal “watch and learn” systems if they want consistent performance.AI can help companies capture, organize, and retrieve internal knowledge faster than ever before.Every company should be building its own internal knowledge library so employees can learn how things are done properly.Retention starts with better onboarding, stronger culture, and real career conversations.Skilled workers need more than pay to stay, they need growth paths, leadership, recognition, and purpose. The future of workforce development will blend technology, live coaching, field-based learning, and structured practice.Companies that invest in training now will reduce risk, improve quality, retain better people, and build a stronger competitive advantage.Check Out Boost LD & Follow Manja HornerIf this conversation resonated with you, make sure to connect with Manja Horner and learn more about the incredible work happening at Boost LD.

Last September, Gerresheimer's stock plunged after German regulators announced an investigation into potential accounting rule violations and compliance irregularities. The packaging maker's issues started when BaFin, Germany's federal financial authority, began looking into a potential bill-and-hold scandal. The company may have recognized €35 million in inflated revenues for some contracts before the revenue was actually realized. In February, as the German manufacturer hired a second auditing firm to review accounting irregularities, the company also announced plans to cut costs, including the sale of Centor, its U.S. subsidiary in Ohio which makes packaging systems for dispensing prescription drugs. Gerresheimer also announced plans to close a glass factory in Chicago Heights, Illinois, laying off 172 workers and offshoring production to factories in Italy and India. The layoffs at Gerresheimer Moulded Glass Chicago will take place on September 30, 2026, according to a local report. A company spokesperson told IEN, "The planned closing of our facility in Chicago Heights is one of the measures of our comprehensive transformation program. It is a global program aimed at reducing costs and improving performance, including an optimized utilization of our global production network."After rejecting a takeover bid from U.S. rival Silgan earlier this month, the manufacturer faces heightened scrutiny. According to German financial media company Aktiencheck, BaFin has expanded its investigation even further as it looks into possible misstatements of millions in leasing liabilities, a review of supposed development costs and potentially inaccurate valuations of other company divisions. Still, the company expects to make up to €2.4 billion euros in 2026 fiscal year.#GenZ, #manufacturing, #skilledtrades, #workforce, #futureofwork, #HVAC, #tradesjobs, #careers, #podcast, #manufacturingjobs, #industry40, #automation, #youngprofessionals, #workforcedevelopment, #careergrowth, #training, #education, #techcareers, #industrialcareers, #nextgen

The skilled trades are getting squeezed from both sides: demand is rising—driven by grid upgrades, battery storage buildouts, and the reshoring of manufacturing—while the workforce pipeline keeps narrowing. Across construction, manufacturing, and other skilled trades, employers are facing a demographic cliff: for every five workers who retire, only two replacements enter the workforce. Contractors feel that imbalance acutely—not just in the field, but increasingly in supervision and leadership. This growing gap has made skilled trades mentorship important, especially as experienced foremen disappear faster than they can be replaced and project timelines continue to stretch. So where do people turn for real guidance—parents, students, or mid-career workers—when the traditional advice channels no longer understand the trades, and misinformation fills the gap?Welcome to Straight Outta Crumpton. In the latest episode, host Greg Crumpton sits down with Doug Winston, CEO of D&M Electrical Contracting and founder of TradeMentor.org, to talk about what it actually takes to build a durable trades career today. Their discussion spans Doug's path from a skeptical high schooler to an electrical contractor running advanced, niche work (think medium-voltage utility systems and multi-megawatt battery storage), and why he's now building a mentoring network to help people enter the industry with clear expectations and credible direction.Top insights…Niches beat commodity work. Doug explains how D&M grew by repeatedly moving into vertical markets others avoided—utility, storm restoration, cell tower builds, and now battery storage—focusing on “revenue per person” rather than racing to the lowest bid.The trades shortage is also a leadership shortage. Beyond the labor gap, Doug argues the industry has weakened the traditional path from field → foreman → estimator → PM → executive, leaving a managerial credibility gap on job sites.TradeMentor is designed to fix the information problem. The platform focuses on skilled trades mentorship, connecting people with region-specific, face-to-face guidance so candidates understand real working conditions, career pathways (union, non-union, pre-apprenticeship, trade school), and the business side for future owners.Doug Winston is a veteran electrical contractor with more than 30 years of experience, serving as President and CEO of D&M Electrical Contracting and its affiliated utility and equipment services companies, specializing in union electrical work, transmission and distribution, storm restoration, and heavy power infrastructure. He is known for building highly efficient teams, operating in niche markets, and scaling complex electrical and utility operations across the Northeast and nationwide. In 2025, he founded TradeMentor.org, a nonprofit dedicated to providing accurate guidance, resources, and one-on-one mentoring for individuals pursuing careers in the skilled trades.

In this co-hosted episode, Travis Chappell sits down with his producer Eric for a candid, humorous, and thought-provoking conversation about the modern job market. Using insights sparked by commentary from Mike Rowe, they break down why traditional career paths may no longer be the smartest route—and why skilled trades and alternative learning paths are becoming increasingly valuable in today's economy. On this episode we talk about: The growing demand for skilled trades and the massive shortage of workers Why college debt is becoming a riskier investment for many young people How AI and automation are reshaping high-skill professions like law and medicine The concept of “earning while you learn” through apprenticeships and hands-on work How to evaluate career paths based on future demand, not outdated societal expectations Top 3 Takeaways Skilled trades are becoming some of the most in-demand and highest-paying opportunities due to a shrinking workforce. Taking on massive student loan debt without a clear plan can delay wealth-building and limit future financial freedom. The future job market will reward adaptability—hands-on skills and real-world experience may outperform traditional degrees. Notable Quotes "The job market works on supply and demand—if fewer people can do the job, it's worth more." "Getting into debt to figure out what you want to do is a pretty wild decision." "Don't undervalue the trades—that might be where the majority of money is made in the next decade." What does the rise of AI mean for technical programs? Surprisingly, it's not a new concept to CTE fields. It is embedded in robotics, automation, diagnostics, and data modeling across modern manufacturing facilities today. In this episode of The TechEd Podcast, Matt Kirchner sits down with Dr. Andrew Neuendorf, Associate Dean of Manufacturing, Engineering, Trades, and Transportation at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), to explore what applied AI actually means inside CTE programs and why education must move beyond generative AI.With a background in English and the humanities, Andrew offers a rare perspective on how artificial intelligence is perceived differently across academic disciplines. From robotics labs to industrial technician programs, he explains where AI has already been embedded for years, where disruption is coming next, and how community colleges can respond with clarity rather than panic. From design software disruption to AI-assisted troubleshooting and entry-level data modeling skills, this conversation will help technical educators think about applied artificial intelligence in their programs. In this episode:Why robotics and automation programs have been teaching AI longer than they realizeThe hidden risk inside CAD and design-heavy technical pathwaysHow students are using AI to troubleshoot equipment faster than faculty expectWhy the “trades are safe from AI” narrative may be dangerously simplisticWhy competency-based education might be a better model in this AI-driven world3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:1. Applied AI has already been embedded in CTE for years. Robotics vision systems, PLC-driven automation, driver-assist sensors, and predictive maintenance models have quietly trained students in machine intelligence long before generative AI dominated headlines. The difference today is scale and accessibility, not the existence of AI itself.2. The future disruption isn't blue collar versus white collar — it's discipline by discipline. Andrew argues that assuming the trades are immune to AI disruption is a strategic mistake, particularly in design-heavy roles like CAD and digital modeling. Education must evaluate AI's impact at the skill level rather than rely on outdated workforce categories.3. Students may lead the applied AI shift inside technical programs. From uploading robot manuals into NotebookLM to accelerating troubleshooting in automation labs, students are modeling AI-assisted problem solving in real time. Institutions that recognize this and structure learning around it will move faster than those focused solely on policing its use.Resources in this Episode:Connect with Andrew on LinkedInOther resources:"Something Big is Happening" by Matt SchumerJensen Huang (NVIDIA) CES KeynoteSix Days in China: The Speed, Scale and Strategy Outpacing U.S. Innovation - Todd Wanek, CEO of Ashley FurnitureTry Google's NotWe want to hear from you! Skilled trades are becoming one of the most important — and overlooked — drivers of the global infrastructure boom. As trillions of dollars flow into energy systems, transportation networks, telecoms, and AI data centers, the constraint is no longer just capital — it's labor. The scale of the infrastructure buildout is historic, but delivering it depends on the availability of trained workers. In this episode of The Bid, host Oscar Pulido is joined by Claire Chamberlain, Global Head of Social Impact and President of the BlackRock Foundation, and Sandra Lawson, Managing Director in Global Corporate Affairs, to explore why skilled trades are central to the next phase of infrastructure investing. With an estimated $85 trillion in global infrastructure investment needed over the next 15 years, demand for electricians, HVAC technicians, grid specialists and plumbers is accelerating.Claire and Sandra explain how apprenticeship-based career pathways offer paid training, competitive wages, and the prospect of long-term financial stability — while also highlighting the growing supply-demand imbalance in the labor market. The conversation explores how philanthropy, employers, unions, schools, and policymakers can work together to expand training capacity and modernize workforce development.
