Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Daniel Lapp is the headliner for this year's Lovefest, which returns to Linnaea Farm on Saturday, August 8, 2026. He has played on over 100 albums and performed across Canada, the United States, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Finland, and Germany. Daniel is also a winner of the BC Fiddler Championship and is the Artistic Director of the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Benji Coey, who is organizing Lovefest, said, "This year I'm very excited to have booked Daniel Lapp, who is a nationally renowned folk and jazz musician. He's going to bring Adam Dobray—who the folks on the island are familiar with—a world-class guitar player, and Richard Moody, one of the country's best fiddle players. Those guys are going to do an extended set. When you get that sort of talent coming through, you have to give them room; you've got to give them time to play, and it's going to be a really mind-blowing set." "We're also going to have the return of Pablo Cardenas with his 'Latin explosion,' so we're going to have some good, vigorous dancing to all kinds of great rhythms. I actually had him last year, but the reason I brought him back is because he only had a short set last year. It was a really energetic, exciting show; the crowd responded terrifically and I thought, 'That's a great taster, but let's get him back this time to really hammer it home.'" "We have a really good lineup—a diverse mix of material—quite a bit of folk really going back to the roots of the festival." "Amy and Rick Bockner will be doing a full set. They didn't play last year, and Rick is part of the heart of the island music scene and, of course, Lovefest. It's going to be a really special occasion to have him and Amy playing a set. I think the island will be very receptive to seeing that beautiful family playing together, celebrating their love, their family, and the music." Cortes Currents: Any other acts that you wanted to mention? Benji Coey: "I won't mention too many right now. There are one or two confirmations which are still coming through, so I shan't release too much more. Daniel Lapp is definitely the big-ticket item. If you haven't heard of Daniel Lapp before, I suggest you go online and check him out. He is a highly regarded musician, multi-award nominated, and a very nice bloke." Cortes Currents: So when will this be happening? Benji Coey: "That's on August 8th at Linnaea Farm. Tickets will go on sale in June and you can, of course, buy them from the Friday market. We hope for another great event and a really good turnout. It's going to be, as ever, a really friendly, enjoyable, laid-back event with some high-energy moments and some beautiful reflective moments. Just those moments when you sit back, feel the early evening roll in, listen to the music, and feel grateful that this talent is coming all this way to entertain us."

Cody Cook sits down with Javan Lapp—a manufacturing executive, amateur historian, and Lancaster County keeper of goats—to explore the insights of 16th-century Anabaptist thinker Pilgram Marpeck into what it means for the church to be embodied without succumbing to state Christianity.Drawing from Javan's contribution to Anabaptist Political Theology After Marpeck, the conversation examines Marpeck's theology of the incarnation and how Christ's literal body informs the identity of the church as the body of Christ. They discuss Marpeck's debates with spiritualists, his emphasis on voluntary faith and embodied practice, his critique of both legalism and disembodied spirituality, and why his “middle way” remains relevant today. The episode also touches on the church as voluntary society, suffering, cruciform spirituality, and the balance between creedal conviction and lived ethics—offering fresh insights for libertarian Christians interested in both ecclesiology and political theology.Buy Anabaptist Political Theology After Marpeck: https://amzn.to/4qebIXVJavan's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/javanlapp/Audio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com ★ Support this podcast ★
For many Americans, taking part in a debate is just about the last thing they'd put on their dance card. But Braver Angels debates are different. In this episode Sam Rechek explains why.“Braver Angels debates are fun,” Sam tells us. “We've created a structure where people can have productive disagreements about contentious issues. That's something many yearn for, and they get interested in really fast.”Unlike most debates, there are no “winners” or “losers”. Speakers at Braver Angels debates are often passionate, but they can't interrupt or be snarky about the other side. Compelling arguments are made on both sides in a respectful way. Different viewpoints about an issue are warmly welcomed, but all comments must be addressed to the chair, not directly to the person you disagree with.“There's a real hunger for environments where people can have productive disagreements and mutual understanding”, says Sam. In our interview we also discuss LAPP skills, and the concept of courageous citizenship. Many of our beliefs about politics and controversial events are formed, or at least influenced, by fleeting impressions: Hot takes on social media, sound bites on TV and radio, and comments by those we know. This episode makes the case for going deeper and spending time with those you may passionately disagree with.Sam Rechek is Program Coordinator for the Braver Angels Debate Team. Several years ago as a undergraduate at the University of South Florida, Sam worked with FIRE - the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression and Heterodox Academy. He founded a student organization, First Amendment Forum—1AF—which developed into a venue for contentious discourse and advocacy for free speech principles. Sam holds a BA in Philosophy and Political Science from USF and an MA in Legal and Political Theory from University College London."How Do We Fix It?" reports on the people, projects and ideas of Braver Angels, the nation's largest cross-partisan volunteer-led movement to bridge partisan divides. Minstrelsy is often called the first American popular entertainment form. Minstrel shows presented musical, dance, and entertainment styles that continue to resonate in US culture and they also reflected the complex, contradictory, deeply prejudiced attitudes towards race that characterized antebellum America, which are still part of American political and cultural discourses. Despite the voluminous scholarship on minstrel shows, there is relatively little work that deeply investigates the music of minstrelsy. Renee Lapp Norris's critical edition called Opera Parody Songs of Blackface Minstrelsy (1844–1860) (A-R Editions, 2025) published as part of the Music of the United States of America series (A-R Editions, 2025) aims to help remedy this absence. In this volume, Norris gathers forty opera parody songs originally published as sheet music that illustrate different approaches to opera parodies taken by minstrel performers. She analyzes how minstrels parodied opera, what political and cultural agendas the music supported, and contextualizes the parodies within the history of antebellum minstrel shows. In this engaging conversation, David Bryan speaks with Frances Moore Lappé, a prominent researcher and author known for her influential book 'Diet for a Small Planet.' They discuss the core message of the book, which challenges the notion of food scarcity and emphasizes the connection between food production, power, and democracy. Lappé shares insights on the evolution of dietary understanding, the environmental impacts of food production, and the importance of hope and courage in driving social change. The conversation also touches on the challenges posed by disinformation in today's society and the need for informed discussions to foster a healthier democracy.Frances Moore Lappé is the author or co-author of 20 books, many focusing on themes of “living democracy”—suggesting not only a government accountable to citizens but a way of living aligned with the deep human need for connection, meaning, and power. She has received 20 honorary doctorates from distinguished institutions across the country, mostly recently Indiana University in 2021.Her first book, the 1971 Diet for a Small Planet, has sold over three million copies. For decades, American men have been in crisis. Globalization has caused millions of jobs to disappear, divorce rates have increased, life expectancy has decreased, and deaths of despair have skyrocketed in many working-class communities.Amber Lapp, research fellow at the Institute for Family Studies and stay-at-home mom, began talking to her neighbors in her working-class community in southwestern Ohio over a decade ago to try to get to the bottom of it. She joins Oren to share the real stories of America's missing men, and discuss why she felt called to leave Manhattan and move to Ohio to better understand working-class life in America. The two dive into the value of getting to know your neighbors in an atomized age and what can be done to begin to reverse this crisis.Further reading:“America's Missing Men” by Amber Lapp
In this interview, Pastor Vinnie engages in a conversation with church member and author Laura Lapp, delving into her life, testimony, and the publication of her book titled “Seasoned with Salt.”

Witness is a tense thriller as much as it is a sweet love story, but Peter Weir's typically sensitive direction balances those elements very well. He also led Harrison Ford to his only Oscar nomination, which seems hard to believe for a guy who's been such a big movie star for such a long time. Lukas Haas plays a young Amish Pennsylvanian who witnesses a vicious murder in the washroom of a train station, then Philly detective Ford has to protect him and his mother (Kelly McGillis) from retribution by the dirty cops who did the deed. And, throughout, Ford & McGillis slowly fall for each other. So stare meaningfully at your crush for 2 hours as we present the 643rd episode on Have You Ever Seen in a way the Amish wouldn't approve of: electronically.
