This week, Aaron sits down with Mike to discuss his journey from the suburbs of Sydney to opening for Ali Wong to headlining his own shows across the world. Outlouders, enjoy this free taster of Holly Wainwright, Clare Stephens and special guest host Laura Brodnik from The Spill on our subscribers-only episode. You can listen to the full conversation: The One Big Lie Blown Up By The Kylie Doco The Netflix doco Kylie has officially dropped, and the nostalgia we are feeling is quite real. Today, Holly, Clare and Laura are unpacking the three-part series. From the ‘singing budgie’ era to two-time Grammy Award winner, it's the ultimate masterclass in career longevity. So why does our collective obsession with the ‘Princess of Pop’ run so deep, and what does Kylie’s story tell us about the grit and resilience behind the fame? What do you mean, you're not a subscriber yet? Solve that problem HERE. We discuss her first cancer diagnosis at age 36, her decision to postpone chemotherapy to try IVF and the revelation of her second, very private battle with breast cancer. Also, the slightly awkward raw honesty of Jason Donovan, her relationship with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and the lure of your first true love. Plus, the touching way her friend Nick Cave articulates her magic might just be our absolute favourite part of the entire thing. Andrew Mercado and James Manning review three new TV series this episode: Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed (AppleTV, 10 episodes)Paula (Tatiana Maslany) is a magazine fact-checker in the midst of a messy divorce from her ex-husband Karl which centres around the custody arrangements of their daughter Hazel. She begins paying Trevor, a webcam boy, for his time, during which she vents about her life and enjoys sexual experiences with him. One night, during one of their sessions, Paula witnesses Trevor being brutally attacked in his home. Reporting it to the Police, Detective Sofia Gonzalez believes it to be a scam. Co-starring are Murray Bartlett and Dolly De Leon. The Boroughs (Netflix, 8 episodes)The Boroughs is a Netflix sci-fi series executive-produced by the Duffer Brothers. It follows a quirky, resilient crew of retirees in a seemingly idyllic retirement community. The story kicks off in a picturesque retirement community, where a grieving newcomer experiences a bizarre and monstrous encounter. Super cast including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis and Bill Pullman. Kylie (Netflix, 3 episodes)Believe the hype, this really is an unfiltered look at the singer life including the major hits and plenty of revealing insights about and from her family and lovers. It doesn’t cover everything which would be a huge undertaking beyond the scope of this doco. There aren’t a lot of interviews but the director has secured the best with contributions from Pete Waterman, Jason Donovan, Nick Cave and sister Dannii – in addition to several sessions with Kylie on the couch. Plus: Andrew also talks about a new Crawford Productions YouTube channel which is home to some classic Australian TV series. James sounds a bit excited about watching Keeley Hawes playing a nun in the forthcoming series Falling.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Proper True Yarn
Territory Was a Wake-Up Call | Why Acting School Had It Wrong

Proper True Yarn

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2026 16:14 Transcription Available

In this episode of the Proper True Yarn Podcast, Beau Jones and Jordan Abbey Young break down the moment acting school stopped serving a purpose and real experience finally took over. The conversation centres on Beau's time filming Territory in the Northern Territory, and how different the environment was compared to his early work on productions like Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan. Where acting school drilled rules like “don't speak,” “don't stand out,” and “don't question anything,” Territory demanded the opposite.Instead of being told where to stand and when to die, Beau explains how he was asked real creative questions. What would your character wear? How would he act? What habits would he have? That shift marked a turning point from being a nervous extra to being trusted as part of the storytelling process.Filming at Tipperary Station amplified everything. Long days, isolation, a fully functioning cattle station still running around the production, and no escaping back to city comforts. Cast and crew lived together, drank together, and learned from each other, including time spent with experienced actors like Rob Taylor. The episode also dives into why the Northern Territory hasn't been boxed into a genre yet, and why Beau believes it should be treated like Australia's modern Wild West. Raw, rough, authentic, and still largely misunderstood on screen. As always, the yarn doesn't stay serious for long. Stories spiral into escaped zoo animals, pig hunters and pygmy hippos, stolen penguins, and a full-on altercation with a koala on North Stradbroke Island. It's an honest breakdown of confidence, creative growth, and the moment you realise school teaches rules, but sets teach reality. If you're into acting behind the scenes, Australian TV, Territory life, or hearing how careers actually get built, this episode delivers.Straight talk, real lessons, and classic Proper True Yarn chaos.#propertrueyarn

What if the key to transforming an entire organization started with the same foundation you learned in kindergarten? Marcia Martin is one of the most prolific influencers in thought leadership over the last 40 years. Renowned as a top transformational trainer and executive coach worldwide, she has provided training for global organizations in over 20 countries. Her clients include Capital One, Warner Bros., InterContinental Hotels, American Cancer Society, Chase Bank, Allianz, McCain Foods, Evian Water, Danone Group, and Hard Rock International. A pioneer of the human potential movement, Marcia served as Vice President and Board Member of Erhard Seminars Training, now known as the Landmark Forum, helping grow its graduate base from inception to millions within a decade. She has consulted for LifeSpring, Robbins Research, Jack Canfield Seminars, Wealth Dynamics, and the Money and You Seminars, and notably organized the film shoot of The Secret: Law of Attraction with Executive Producer Rhonda Byrne. Her memoir, Sex, Power and Transformation, is available now on Amazon.   [00:04:00] At the Birth of the Human Potential Movement Marcia was present at the very beginning of the human potential movement in San Francisco in 1971 Left the University of Washington at 20 for a spiritual quest during the era of the flower children and Haight-Ashbury Apprenticed with her aunt, a clairvoyant healer and esoteric astrologist, who taught her to go inward for answers That training shaped her core belief: answers come from within, not from outside of yourself [00:06:00] Werner Erhard and the EST Years Attended Werner Erhard's very first guest seminar and recognized his message as aligned with what her aunt had taught her Joined the team and became Senior Vice President of EST, helping grow it from 30 people to over 800,000 graduates Was responsible for marketing, sales, training guest seminar leaders, and filling all events Learned both what to do and what not to do by watching how fame and wealth changed people up close [00:11:00] Organizing the Film Shoot for The Secret Co-created the Transformational Leadership Council with Jack Canfield, bringing together top thought leaders and coaches Received a call from Rhonda Byrne, an Australian TV producer, asking to film the group for what became The Secret Ended up organizing the entire film shoot, squeezed into a tiny borrowed office at her country club in Aspen, Colorado Rhonda's skill in editing made the cramped shoot look cinematic [00:19:00] The Night Werner Put Her in Front of 2,500 People Marcia started out speaking to guests on the edge of a bed in a bedroom; groups grew to 20, then 50, then hundreds The day of a major 2,500-person event, Werner told her she would be leading it instead of him She refused, panicked, and was furious; her largest audience to that point had been 150 people His advice: find one person in the crowd, look at them, and remember how much you love them [00:24:00] Empowerment Over Micromanagement Werner's decision to trust Marcia with that event became the defining lesson of her leadership philosophy Most senior executives she works with today are micromanagers who unwittingly signal they don't trust their people Her belief: if a leader is micromanaging, it is not just a lack of trust in others but a lack of trust in themselves True empowerment means giving people room to make mistakes and grow into their potential [00:27:00] The ABCs of Leadership: Her Three-Day Transformation Marcia's flagship offering is a three-day intensive for senior leadership teams of entrepreneurial organizations Covers leadership, championship performance, communication mastery, relationships, confidence, mindset, and causing action Mentored by Buckminster Fuller, Peter Drucker, Jerry Weintraub, and Werner Erhard; she now passes those lessons on   KEY QUOTES "So many human beings look outside of themselves to find answers. We haven't been taught how to go within and connect with our own higher power." - Marcia Martin "Werner was smart enough to give me the room and the empowerment to get it done. He didn't micromanage me, he trusted me and he made a good bet on me." - Marcia Martin "I've figured out the concepts, the fundamentals, the ABCs of leadership and championship performance, and put them together in a way that is fun." - Marcia Martin CONNECT WITH MARCIA MARTIN

For more than a decade, Rove McManus was one of the most familiar faces on Australian TV. Rove Live helped launch the careers of some of Australia's brightest talents – including Carrie Bickmore, Peter Helliar, Hamish Blake and Andy Lee – it attracted some of the biggest stars on the planet, and created viral moments before internet virality even existed. In 2026, after 25 years on our screens, the comedian is reliving the best, worst and most controversial moments from the TV hit in his new live comedy show. On this episode of the Stellar podcast, he shares the reason he first hired Carrie Bickmore, and the strangest complaints the show ever received, plus he reflects on why a show like Rove Live couldn’t exist today. Rove is currently touring Australia with his new comedy show Tonight’s Guest: Rove McManus (Tales From The Talk Show Trenches). Kiwis love their cooking shows. Once you get past ‘The Chase', the likes of MasterChef Australia is consistently within the top watched shows, both on TV and online. Recognisable from her four seasons on MasterChef Australia, Melissa Leong has moved on to host Dessert Masters, and is now fronting a new Kiwi cooking show. She's partnered up with Aimsfield Head Chef Vaughan Mabee for ‘Taste of Art', a show that pits ten Kiwi chefs against one another, aiming to create visually stunning food. Leong told Mike Hosking the reason food and cooking related shows tend to do well is because of the element of human connection. “You know, the stories that food allow us to tell about culture, about time and place and connection, all of these things are just so very enduringly human,” she said. "We are always going to find that compelling.” She says there's something there for everyone, whether it's a show like MasterChef that heroes the humble, homegrown cooks and recipes, or something like ‘Taste of Art', which showcases imagination and incredible possibilities. “There's something in it for everyone ... being able to share a little bit, a little part of who they are in the form of food.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

UFOs, UAPs, flying cigars, extraordinary new technologies ... Are we not alone?Award-winning investigative journalist Ross Coulthart has been intrigued by UFOs since mysterious glowing lights were reported near New Zealand's Kaikoura mountains when he was a teenager. The 1978 sighting is just one of thousands since the 1940s, and yet research into UFOs is still seen as the realm of crackpots and conspiracy theorists. In 2020, however, after decades of denial, the US Department of Defence made the astonishing admission that strange aerial and underwater objects frequently reported and videoed by pilots and tracked by sensors are real, unexplained, and pose a genuine national security concern.Compelled to investigate, Coulthart has embarked on what's become the most confronting and challenging story of his career, speaking to witnesses, researchers, scientists, spies and defence and intelligence officials and insiders. What he has found suggests that the world is on the cusp of extraordinary technological breakthroughs and cultural revelations.Bizarre, sometimes mind-blowing and utterly fascinating, In Plain Sight tells a story that's largely escaped the radar of mainstream media coverage but has been there all along. In a televised interview aired in Australia, Bill Gates was pressed about his past association with Jeffrey Epstein and asked whether he regretted having that connection. During the exchange, he acknowledged that he “shouldn't have had dinners” with Epstein, but he adamantly denied there was ever any deeper partnership or formal alignment between Epstein and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Gates maintained that his interactions with Epstein were limited and opportunistic rather than indicative of any ongoing relationship. The interview drew attention because it forced Gates into a defensive posture over years-old ties at a moment when Epstein's legacy remains deeply controversial. He was challenged repeatedly on whether his ex-wife, Melinda, had warned him about Epstein's intentions and whether any philanthropic deals had been discussed—questions he deflected by restating his regret while pushing back on accusations of deeper involvement.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com
