Journalists play a vital role in a democracy, holding power to account. The traditional model of journalism sees journalists as disinterested seekers of the truth, striving for ‘objectivity' and suppressing their own opinions. But as newsrooms and editorial pages previously staffed only by white male journalists have evolved, and as the internet has driven the rise of opinion journalism, we are faced with two important questions: Does it matter who journalists are? And does it matter what they think? At a time when media business models are in crisis, how should we think about bias, representation, truth and opinion? What happens when journalists themselves become ‘the story'? And if we can't talk about these thorny questions in the media itself, can the media do its job at all?  Antoinette Lattouf is a broadcaster, columnist, author, speaker, human rights advocate, mental health ambassador who dabbles in satire and is terrible at reverse parking. She is the creator and co-host of The Antoinettes podcast, a weekly commentary and comedy podcast. She is also the co-host of news and analysis podcast The Briefing. The multi-award-winning journalist is the co-founder of Media Diversity Australia – a not-for-profit organisation working towards increasing cultural and linguistic diversity in the media. Andy Mills is an American reporter and podcast producer who co-created The Daily at The New York Times, Reflector and several documentary series including Rabbit Hole and The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling. Josh Szeps is one of Australia's most influential and innovative interviewers. In New York, he was a founding host-producer of the revolutionary US streaming news network, HuffPost Live. He won a Webby Award while the organisation won a Pulitzer. Josh also appeared regularly with Al Roker as a contributor on the NBC TODAY Show. On his return to Australia, he co-anchored the national morning television show, Weekend Breakfast, and became a fixture of ABC Radio Sydney. Afternoons with Josh Szeps launched in 2021, a three-hour daily talkback radio show. In 2024, Josh left the legacy media to wrestle freely with ideas in a spicier way. Uncomfortable Conversations with Josh Szeps took off as a podcast, Substack publication, live touring enterprise and YouTube channel. Chaired by Louise Adler, Director of Adelaide Writers' Week, who has spent over 30 years in the culture business and continues to be committed to the dissemination of dangerous ideas.

For the past four weeks I've been in rehearsals for a new musical adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. During that time I even got Covid for the second time and had to miss several days of rehearsal while I was recovering. In fact, I wasn't the only one who got Covid during the rehearsal process, so it's been quite a journey for the creators and the cast as a whole and putting the show together. But we've now done all the blocking and scene work and are headed into tech rehearsals this week. With that in mind I wanted to revisit a conversation from June 2020 with a playwright who is still just getting started in his own journey as a writer, an actor, a director and producer. Cris Eli Blak has remained one of my favorite guests and was someone who actually found me and requested to be a guest on the podcast. I'm so grateful for him reaching out and for the very personal, honest, and at times uncomfortable conversation we had. We talk about the writing process of bringing a show from the page to the stage as well as what it means to him to be a Black writer in theater today. He was only 21 when we sat down for this interview, but his insights and life experiences show maturity and wisdom far beyond his years.  Topics covered in this episode:  - Do The Right Thing 30 Years Later   - Spike Lee on HuffPost Live   - The Brother's Survivor short film   - The World Changes Through Art   - Our Duty to Confront Racism in Theater Industry   - "Like Father, Like Son" on the Logue Lounge   - All-White Production Of HAIRSPRAY In Texas Raises Eyebrows   - Should There Be All-White Productions of HAIRSPRAY?    "I want to give a shoutout to the people who push me, drive me, motivate me and hold me accountable. So, this goes out to my mother. This goes out to my grandfather. This goes out to my grandmother. This goes out to my sister. This goes out to my aunt. This goes out to everyone who came before me. This goes out to the late great August Wilson and Lorraine Hansberry who are on my personal Mt. Rushmore. And this is to everyone who wakes up and turns their dreams into goals and their goals into realities, for everyone who struggles and keeps going anyway." In the spring of 1944, a teenage Gene Klein and his family were taken from their village in Hungary and thrown into the infamous Nazi extermination camp known as Auschwitz. His father was taken straight to the gas chamber. Klein was forced into slave labor until liberated in the spring of 1945, and he spent two years as a refugee before his and other family members were allowed to immigrate to the United States. Now living in The Villages, Fla., Klein has been speaking out about the Holocaust for more than three decades. Writing for The World Post in July 2016 as a memorial to Elie Wiesel, Klein noted that he, unlike Wiesel, was silent for decades about the Holocaust.“Eventually, I decided that, like Wiesel, I needed to be public about being a survivor and that, in my own small way, I should contribute to the mission of educating the world about the Holocaust,” he wrote.“I will tell our story,” he continued, “and I will speak — especially in these times — about the tolerance and compassion necessary to prevent what happened to us from happening to others.”Klein has inspired audiences around the world with his powerful and touching presentation on the continuing relevance of the Holocaust and the necessity of fostering the capacity for empathy, instead of allowing hate to flourish. He is a frequent contributor to national and international media outlets, including CNN, The Guardian, and HuffPost Live.Source: https://www.fhsu.edu/news/2017/03/Gene-Klein–Holocaust-survivor–to-bring-his-story–message-of-compassion–to-FHSU

Back to the Roots James has been on an incredible journey so far, and since 2014, he has been helping functional medicine practitioners find new ways to move the needle and grow their business. James is able to offer a unique perspective to business problems at FM practices because he doesn't look at them through the lens of a clinician. He has been able to help doctors digitize their practices, build a low-overhead business model, and pursue their passion for functional medicine full-time with greater profitability. James is going back to the fundamental roots of functional medicine, because before we can address the needs of individual people, we have to transform their desire to want to participate. Getting Buy-in From Your Patients The real work of functional medicine practitioners is coming face-to-face with another human being and helping them create a plan of attack to address the things that are making them unhealthy. With a more effective business model in place, these types of doctors can make an impact on a greater number of patients. The most effective functional medicine practices James has worked with put lifestyle first. Once you put your patients in control of their own life and act as a guide on their journey, you will see your practice grow. If you want to get in the front end of this new era of functional medicine, you have to get more buy-in from your patients, helping them understand why they will see results from working with you, and how to participate in their care. Today we're interviewing Mike Watson, Founder of Heart-centric Leadership, about what else - heart-centric leadership! What is heart-centric leadership? Here's what Mike has to say about it: "There is a leadership and engagement crisis in organizations that I believe (and I am doing research on for my doctorate) is associated with a lack of willingness by leaders to embrace spiritual intelligence, along with IQ and emotional intelligence. This crisis extends beyond the organization and into our home lives wherein we are all leaders of our own lives, and is evident with the number of people that say they don't know what their purpose in life is, and how to find it. When we listen to our heart, and let it inform our mind prior to decision-making then we are also allowing space for spiritual intelligence to guide us on our own purposeful journey." Mike spent 15 years in organizational leadership, where his insights and foundation were shaped for Heart-centric Leadership www.mikewatson.today. He has done multiple keynotes and workshops for Universities and organizations. He's also appeared on HuffPost Live 3x as guest panelist to discuss leadership and social activism, and has been the beloved Emcee for TEDx Charlotte. He is currently completing his doctorate in organizational leadership, with a dissertation on Spiritual Intelligence in Leadership, with an online course series launching this summer.  He will be hiking Mount Kilimanjaro in July to raise awareness and money for the prevention of foot-born diseases, and to honor the work of Samaritan's Feet 15 year anniversary. Join us as we pick the genius brain and warm heart of Mr. Mike Watson.
