In The Calm [06:16], they dig into Alien: Earth's big flashback episode as director Noah Hawley delivers his own Alien mini-movie about the plight of the USCSS Maginot. They question whether 65 years of one's life is worth a quarter share, worry about the workplace safety practices of Weyland-Yutani scientists, and present several wild theories about Morrow's motivations. Then in The Storm [01:17:50], your faithful hosts break down the trailer for episode 6, "The Wasp," before considering the possible endgame for Wendy's character and the Alien comic that could serve as inspiration for a wild twist. General Witchfinders

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 29, 2025 82:00

This time on General Witchfinders, we're heading into deep space — and hell itself — with the notorious 1997 science fiction horror film Event Horizon.··Directed by Paul Anderson and written by Philip Eisner, Event Horizon is set in 2047. A rescue crew investigates the ship Event Horizon, which vanished years earlier and is now orbiting Neptune.··After Mortal Kombat (1995), Anderson was suddenly in demand, linked to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and even X-Men. Instead, he wanted a darker R-rated project. Paramount gave him Eisner's script, first about alien creatures, but Anderson reworked it into a haunted house in space, drawing on The Haunting and The Shining.··Filming was rushed when Titanic slipped its release. The first 130-minute cut was heavily trimmed after poor test screenings. One infamous scene, a Bosch-inspired vision of Hell using amputees and adult performers, survived only as brief flashes but fuelled the film's cult status.··The gravity drive began as a floating black hole but was redesigned as rotating spiked rings, echoing Clive Barker's Hellraiser and biblical Ophanim. Built to really move, it rattled so much that dialogue was re-recorded later. Eisner admitted Warhammer 40,000's “Warp” also influenced the idea.··At the time Anderson was credited as “Paul Anderson.” He later added the W. S. to avoid confusion with Paul Thomas Anderson. His later films include Resident Evil entries and Alien vs. Predator.··Filming took place at Pinewood Studios with visual effects by Cinesite and the Computer Film Company. The interior design was inspired by Notre Dame, creating a cruciform gothic cathedral feel. An early space station shot of Dr. Weir took 10 weeks, a third of the FX budget, and was redone more than 20 times. Composer Michael Kamen worked with Orbital for a hybrid score.··Laurence Fishburne plays Captain Miller of the Lewis and Clark. He later voiced the Silver Surfer, played Jack Crawford in Hannibal, and appeared in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3.··Sam Neill plays Dr. William Weir. Famous for Jurassic Park, he once auditioned for James Bond, losing to Timothy Dalton, and appeared in Possession and Omen III: The Final Conflict.··Jason Isaacs appears as D.J., the medic. Early credits include The Tall Guy. He went on to play Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and Harry H. Corbett in The Curse of Steptoe. He recalled Event Horizon as “genuinely disturbing,” especially the “hell set.”··Sean Pertwee plays pilot Smith. Son of Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor, he appeared in Cadfael, horror favourite Dog Soldiers, and later Gotham as Alfred Pennyworth, reimagined as ex-special forces.··Event Horizon remains a cult 1990s sci-fi horror, combining gothic design, disturbing imagery, and a cast of future stars. Its lost footage and production stories keep fans returning to one of the most infamous horror films of the decade.·Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Hosted on Acast. The Dark Oak

In 2009, 21-year-old Christina Whittaker, a new mother from Hannibal, Missouri, disappeared after a night out with friends on November 13. She was last seen after being escorted out of Rookie's Sports Bar around 11:45 p.m. for disruptive behavior, having been previously banned from the establishment. Witnesses reported her being heavily intoxicated, and after failing to secure a ride home from two other nearby bars, River City Billiards and Sportsman's Bar, she was last seen leaving the latter, upset after a heated phone call. Her cell phone was found the next morning near Sportsman's Bar by Danny Baker, a registered sex offender, raising suspicions due to his questionable connection to Christina and the timing of the discovery. No significant evidence was recovered from the phone. Christina's mother, Cindy Young, has been vocal about the case, believing her daughter may have been kidnapped and trafficked to Peoria, Illinois, a theory fueled by rumors involving Darcy “Bookie” Morris, a known criminal with a violent history, including a 2014 murder conviction. Some speculate Morris may have abducted Christina, possibly disposing of her body at a hog farm, though he denies involvement, claiming he was in Peoria for his daughter's birth. Cindy insists Christina is alive in Peoria, possibly brainwashed and living among the homeless, though reported sightings remain unconfirmed. The Hannibal Police Department has conducted over 200 interviews but found no evidence of foul play, and no surveillance footage or solid leads have emerged. A 2021 documentary, *Relentless*, explored the case, introducing new perspectives and theories, including Morris's potential involvement and the questionable circumstances around Baker, who died before being fully interviewed. The documentary, discussed in a follow-up episode, challenges initial assumptions about the case. Despite extensive searches, including in areas known for crime, no trace of Christina has been found, and the police have largely stepped back, leaving the case unresolved.   Sources: What happened to Christina Whittaker?

Send us a textYou probably know a little bit about Hannibal, Missouri, because of the books written by a guy named Mark Twain, but I bet you don't know much about the history of African Americans who've lived in Hannibal, even though Hannibal has had African American residents from its earliest days. I didn't until I talked with Faye Dant, founder of a Hannibal museum called Jim's Journey. In this episode, Dant fills me in on the history that's been hard to come by.  We talk about her deep family roots in Hannibal and Missouri, and how the lack of recognition for Black history in Hannibal inspired her to create the museum. She describes how she researches the history of the area's African American communities, and what she learned about the first African Americans in Hannibal. She gives an overview of the city's Black neighborhoods and how African Americans weren't allowed to be in many Hannibal neighborhoods after dark.  She describes the limited economic and educational opportunities available to African Americans in town, and her own experience going through the public schools as they integrated. We talk about the foundations of community life, and a couple of people who left an outsized mark on the area's history: Joe Douglas and George Coleman Poage. We wrap up with a discussion of what she learned about Mark Twain growing up in Hannibal and what she thinks about the way Hannibal presents Mark Twain today.

Tune in here to this Tuesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by talking about chaos in the political landscape and the strategic use of unpredictability. He emphasizes that while many see disorder as a sign of decline, it can actually signal a calculated and powerful strategy at work. Drawing from historical examples like Hannibal, Scipio, and Sun Tzu, Brett parallels these ancient tactics with Donald Trump’s political maneuvering, claiming Trump uses confusion as a tool to destabilize opponents and consolidate influence. He argues that what some view as random or reckless is actually deliberate, and it's reshaping America’s position globally. Brett contends that the economy is strong, rivals like Iran and China are unsettled, and allies are aligning with U.S. interests. Throughout the monologue, he stresses that confusion isn’t the end—it's the beginning of dominance, positioning Trump’s strategy as both modern and rooted in timeless principles of power and warfare. Beth Troutman from Good Morning BT is also here for this Tuesday's episode of Crossing the Streams. Brett and Beth talk about the importance of simplifying government systems and bringing fresh perspectives into Washington. Beth shares her top two national policy priorities: implementing a fair tax system and establishing term limits for elected officials. She argues that a streamlined, transparent tax structure would reduce confusion and ensure everyone contributes fairly, while term limits would encourage public service over career politics. Brett and Beth explore the idea that limiting time in office could naturally phase out aging politicians and reduce corruption tied to long-term incumbency. What if our bitter political divisions aren't just about policy differences but reflect ancient biological drives hardwired into our DNA? Dr. Melvyn Lurie, Harvard-trained psychiatrist with expertise in genetics, presents a groundbreaking framework for understanding America's current crisis through evolutionary biology.Drawing from his observation of nesting species and historical civilizations, Dr. Lurie identifies two fundamental drives shaping human societies: survival drives (focused on resource acquisition and protection) and reproductive drives (centered on nurturing the vulnerable). When a civilization becomes successful, it naturally shifts from survival orientation toward reproductive concerns – a transition Dr. Lurie believes marks America's current precarious position. This biological perspective illuminates why our politics feels so intractable. Those facing economic uncertainty naturally prioritize survival needs, while those with greater security gravitate toward care for the vulnerable. Neither side recognizes these as biological imperatives requiring balance, leading to wild oscillations between administrations rather than healthy equilibrium.Rome provides a sobering parallel – a civilization that could once mobilize massive armies against Hannibal couldn't defend itself against barbarians centuries later as its survival orientation diminished. Dr. Lurie sees America approaching a similar tipping point as we reach the 200-250 year mark that typically signals civilizational decline.Yet hope remains if we can recognize these drives for what they are. By developing a new vocabulary that acknowledges both orientations as legitimate and necessary, we might escape the tribal "Red Sox versus Yankees" mentality currently gripping our discourse. As Dr. Lurie explains, "Once people understand what's really going on, things go right."Join us for this fascinating exploration of the biology behind our political moment and discover how evolutionary science might hold the key to preserving American democracy for generations to come. You can visit his website here: https://melvynlurie.com/Send us a text Musis by Bitterlake, Used with Permission, all rights to BitterlakeSupport the showCrew:Host: C. When was the last time your history book mentioned Julius Caesar's seizures or Hannibal's missing eye? The erasure of disability from our historical narratives isn't accidental—it reveals our modern discomfort with integrating disability into stories of power and achievement.Caroline Bristow, Director of the Cambridge School Classics Project, takes us on a fascinating journey through ancient Rome's complex relationship with disability. From gravestone inscriptions that proudly declare "Meropnus, aulis player with dwarfism" to special legal accommodations for disabled military veterans, we discover that ancient attitudes weren't as simplistic as we've been led to believe. The conversation explores how the Cambridge Latin Course—used by 93% of UK schools teaching Latin and countless institutions worldwide—is being thoughtfully revised to include accurate representations of disability throughout history. This isn't about tokenistic inclusion, but about acknowledging the full spectrum of human experience that has always existed.Particularly compelling is the discussion of classical art and monuments, where contrary to popular belief, diverse body types including elderly people, those with surgical scars, and various physical differences were indeed represented—though often filtered out by later scholars to support their idealized vision of classical perfection.Whether you're interested in classical history, inclusive education, or the way our modern biases shape our understanding of the past, this conversation offers illuminating insights into how we can build a more accurate and representative historical narrative. The remarkable saga of Tulsa's Greenwood District—known as "Black Wall Street"—stands as one of America's most compelling yet overlooked stories of entrepreneurial triumph, devastating racial violence, and extraordinary resilience. In this powerful episode, historian and author Hannibal Johnson reveals surprising truths that challenge common narratives about this iconic Black business district. While most accounts focus solely on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, Johnson unveils the community's astonishing rebirth, explaining how Greenwood actually reached its entrepreneurial zenith in the 1940s—two decades after its destruction.Johnson takes us deep into Greenwood's economic ecosystem, where entrepreneurs like Simon Berry operated jitney services (early versions of Uber), bus lines, hotels, and even charter plane services for wealthy white oil executives. We learn how Oklahoma's unique history gave many Black citizens land allotments through tribal connections, creating economic foundations that fostered business development across the state. The discussion explores difficult truths about what caused the massacre—from land lust and Klan activity to inflammatory newspaper reporting and the jealousy of poor whites seeing successful Black entrepreneurs. Yet the most powerful revelation may be how the community responded to this devastation, with businesses rebuilding "even as the embers still smoked." The story of Mount Zion Baptist Church spending 30 years to repay its mortgage rather than declaring bankruptcy exemplifies the community's extraordinary integrity.Perhaps most thought-provoking is Johnson's analysis of how desegregation ironically contributed to the district's eventual economic decline by creating a one-way flow of Black dollars into white businesses without reciprocal white spending in Black establishments. This insight, combined with the devastating impact of urban renewal projects, offers crucial lessons about maintaining community wealth. For today's entrepreneurs facing their own challenges, Greenwood's legacy provides profound inspiration: "If your forebears 100 years ago did incredible things against odds you will never face, that should be inspirational." Discover how this history continues to inspire a new generation to build economic power with the same determination and excellence that defined Black Wall Street.Support the showhttps://www.patreon.com/c/EA_BookClub

Directed by Brett Ratner and based on the novel by Thomas Harris, the film sets the stage for Hannibal Lecter's reign of terror by diving into the case that first brought him down. Edward Norton (Fight Club, American History X) stars as Will Graham, a gifted FBI profiler pulled out of retirement to track down a serial killer known as “The Tooth Fairy.” To catch him, Graham must confront the brilliant and sadistic Dr. Hannibal Lecter—played once again by Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs, The Father) in one of his most iconic roles. Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List, Harry Potter) delivers a haunting performance as Francis Dolarhyde, a reclusive killer obsessed with transformation, while Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves, Punch-Drunk Love) plays Reba, a blind woman who sparks an emotional conflict within him. The cast also features Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction) as FBI agent Jack Crawford, Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote, The Master) as sleazy tabloid reporter Freddy Lounds, and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds, Fried Green Tomatoes) as Molly Graham, Will's wife. Famous and highly searched moments include Lecter's cryptic manipulation from his cell, the terrifying home invasion sequence, and Dolarhyde's dragon transformation imagery—especially the chilling use of William Blake's painting The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sun. With psychological tension, disturbing visuals, and a legacy of terror, Red Dragon cements itself as a key chapter in the Hannibal Lecter saga. He then unleashed the post-apocalyptic action mayhem of "Doomsday" and the brutal historical epic "Centurion,". More recently, he directed the period horror "The Reckoning" and the creature feature "The Lair." And it's not just features! He's brought his distinctive, cinematic vision to some of the biggest TV shows out there, directing two of the most epic battle episodes in "Game of Thrones" history – "Blackwater" and "The Watchers on the Wall" – which earned him an Emmy nomination. He's also helmed episodes of "Black Sails," "Constantine," "Hannibal," "Westworld," and "Lost in Space. And also joining us today, we have an incredible talent in Liz Farahadi, who truly embodies the spirit of independent filmmaking: an accomplished actress and a dedicated producer who champions diverse voices and impactful stories. You might know her from her acting roles in compelling independent films like "Losing Grace" (where she also served as a producer) and "Wild Bones," as well as various theatre productions and commercials. She's also had roles in the well-loved British soaps, "EastEnders" and "Coronation Street," along with other dramas like "Two Thousand Acres of Sky," "Miss Marple," and "Doctor Who. She's a passionate advocate for filmmakers, recognizing the need for support, especially for those from marginalized backgrounds. This drive led her to found and direct The Soho London Independent Film Festival (SohoLIFF), a fantastic platform dedicated to creating opportunities and celebrating films with social and environmental impact. She's currently in post-production on new short films like "Losing Grace" and "Daughter," and developing features like "Xenos" and "Polly." Her latest film as an actress and producer, "Keep Young & Beautiful," delves into the darker world of beauty standards with a powerful and humorous edge. For most of its history, the Roman Republic had little to do with the Greek East. That changed at the end of the third century BC. As the war against Hannibal reached its conclusion, momentous things were happening in the eastern Mediterranean, as the system of great powers that had defined the Hellenistic world for a century collapsed almost overnight.
