When people treat you wrong, it's very easy to hold a grudge. You may not understand how it could be possible to forgive someone, especially if what they did or saidwas especially hurtful. I know this and understand it from a personal perspective. Maybe you think forgiveness is about the other person and somehow, they benefit from you forgiving them. NEWSFLASH! Forgiveness is not about the other person...it is about you. It is about releasing you – MENTALLY & EMOTIONALLY – from the act or behavior that hurt you! In today's episode, I will share with you why forgiveness is necessary for you as an important self-care “activity” in order to be released from past hurts. "Laughter is the best medicine" is a phrase that dates back to biblical times as an old Proverb and it's still widely used today all over the world. That's because it's true! At least I believe it is! There's nothing like a gut-busting, belly-hurting laugh where, afterwards, you have that light-headed “high.” There's a physiological reason that happens. In today's episode we will take a look at what happens inside your body, your mind and your spirit when you laugh. Our bodies have many ways of informing us that something is not or may not be well. Our emotions are one of those ways. How we address what is not going well, as relating to those emotions, can have a serious impact on our physical and mental well-being. Continuing with the theme of “self-care,” today's episode will a bit deeper than Episode 003 – The Emotionally Intelligent You (my suggestion is to go back and listen if you have not) where I will unpack, specifically, how to develop healthier emotional responses. Today is of critical importance for self-care...in our personal lives, at work and in our relationships. Since it is so important, what are you doing to ensure that your own self-care is a top priority? In today's episode I will introduce what self-care is, in my opinion, and share with you a few activities of which you can begin now to put your own self-care at the forefront because without it nothing else matters. Your ATTITUDE determines your ALTITUDE! I'm sure you've heard that before! Maybe a trusted advisor, friend or relative may have told you that or you may have even said it to someone. Regardless of where you have heard this, your attitude is a vital component to becoming a better you. Some people may wear their attitude as a badge of courage but hear me on this...if your attitude is negative, that's not a badge of courage! Instead, it is a stain on your character. In this episode, I will unpack the importance of changing your attitude. While we have all learned to talk, few have learned the art and skill of effective communication. I won't touch upon the skills of communication here – well, not directly. What I do share in this episode however, are four barriers to effective communication. Although there are many barriers to effective communication, here I will go over four based on the extensive research of John Gottman* pertaining to marriage. These four barriers are not limited to marriage and I hope that you will see the applicability to other areas of life. *The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, John Gottman PhD Contact Info: Email – podcast@4mpactforpersonalgrowth.com Website – https://www.4mpactforpersonalgrowth.com/contact-us Order Book: http://bit.ly/FOCUSBOOK Music: https://audionautix.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/becoming-a-better-you/message
Lead is an action word...meaning it is something that must be done. Leading goes (or at least should) beyond a title, salary or office size. The respectability of your role as a leader rests in the confidence of those to whom you are leading...and one of the best ways to do this is to ‘Lead By Example.' On today's episode I want to briefly touch upon how and why you must lead by example. Also, as you are listening keep in mind that leading is not limited to the office or to the workplace. Inner peace, unfortunately, is not a natural state of being for many of us. With all that is happening around us it is understandable why this is so. However, inner peace is a necessary component we need even when things around us are running amok. Since inner peace is not a natural state, that should signal to you that you must find a way for it to become a part of your coping mechanism. I am hopeful that you will find something in this episode that will allow you to find the inner peace, if you are currently lacking, that you may need to protect your sanity. In Episode 025, I addressed ‘Why Do You Care About What Others Think About You?' and how to approach that. In this episode I want to flip that around and ask, “What Do You Think About Yourself?” In other words, ‘Checking Your Self-Talk.” It is one thing to concern yourself what others think bout you but what you think about yourself should be of greater concern. Today, let's take a look at why it is important to check your self-talk as well as ways to confront negative self-talk. If you have nothing positive to say about yourself, how can you expect others to speak positively about you? Take a listen and takeaway how to create a positive, personal narrative. If that is you, hear this…If you have breath, you have value! Another favorite idiom of mine is, “Opinions are a dime a dozen but that doesn't mean you have to make a purchase!” The difference maker I will impart is be able to distinguish between an opinion about you and receiving constructive feedback. You might say your brain is likened to computer hardware; and with that being the case, it makes sense that your mind is the software operating inside your brain. Unlike animals, there is a cognitive reason why we do (or don't do) what we do. The reason I say unlike animals is because 1) animals do not have cognitive reasoning and 2) they function solely on instinct. Yes, we have an instinctual/habitual way of doing things but we do not dependently function in that realm of being. Since we do not function on instinct alone there must be something working within us that determines what we do. That something is called MOTIVATION! In this episode, we will explore two main reasons that “motivate” us to do the things we do. Advertising and sales/marketing professionals operate on these two factors to motivate us to spend precious dollars. There are no guarantees in life except…death & taxes! At least that's what I've always heard growing up. I'm sure you've heard that saying too. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that those are the only guarantees in life. Regardless of its truthfulness, that should not prevent you from living the life you were purposed to live. Life is like a road. There are long and short roads; smooth and rocky roads; crooked and straight roads. Just like any road, there are corners, detours, and crossroads. The most confusing road that you will ever come across is a crossroad. With four roads from which to choose and with limited knowledge on where they go, which road will you take? In this episode, you'll get an idea of why “no guarantees” is not an excuse NOT to become a better you! That is why you and I must take every advantage to live the life for which we are purposed. And I'll also add that on this journey, reaching your goals (or fulfilling your purpose) should leave evidence that you lived a life of significance. In other words…leave a trail to help others on their journey! “How your MIND reacts or responds to what it receives has the potential to manifest itself in the words of your MOUTH, which can MOTIVATE you into action that will lead you to a high level of personal MASTERY.” This is the philosophy behind The 4MPACT Way to Personal Growth. In this episode, we will explore each of the four (4) elements a bit closer to give you clarity on how you can apply this framework to managed and/or enhance your personal and professional development. The four elements defined are: Mind – Everything that makes up who you are is determined by how your mind reacts or responds to what it receives from external stimuli. People can be cruel. They say things out of anger and a variety of other reasons; and some of those words can be hurtful. In some cases, those same words can have very long lasting effects. However, this episode will take another perspective on those words that, in general, have been hurtful. We will address two key factors that determine WHY words should never hurt you. Those two key factors are: 1) the truthfulness or 2) falseness of those words. After listening to this episode you will have an alternative perspective of words, their meaning, and also how you have the power to resist being hurt by words. To never be hurt by words again will become as easy as knowing your ABCs. Music: https://audionautix.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/becoming-a-better-you/message
All throughout school we have been tested on this subject and that subject, all to measure our competence…or more directly our level of intelligence (IQ). Howard Gardner took intelligence a step further and theorized that we have multiple intelligences – that is, humans have specific modalities by which they learn. So, some form of “intelligence” has been studied or theorized for decades. Emotional intelligence is no different. Popularized (though not developed) by Dan Goleman in the 1990s, he brought to light the notion that we can be intelligent in how we use and manage our emotions. The components of Emotional Intelligence include: Personal Competence: Self-Awareness, Self-Management Social Competence: Social Awareness, Relationship Management In this episode, I will unpack emotional intelligence or EQ, its competencies and how you can learn to become emotionally intelligent. The more emotionally intelligent you become, you become more aware of your own emotions, the emotions of others and the role your emotions play in building effective relationships. Unlike IQ, EQ is not static and can be learned. If you've never heard of emotional intelligence, today is your first lesson in beginning a new path to becoming a better you.
