In this episode, I'll break down what real self-care means — beyond bubble baths and quick fixes — and I'll share practical sustainable ways to take better care of your mental health (along with your emotional and physical wellbeing). Because true self-care isn't about indulgence; it's about building your resilience, setting boundaries, and making choices that genuinely improve your life. Ready to make self-care work for you, instead of it just being another thing on your to-do list? Then let's talk!

In this episode, therapist, April Bordeau, explores the impact of generational patterns on mental wellbeing and relationships, specifically how mental health issues can be passed down through family lines and then explains 7 steps individuals can take to break the cycle. Breaking the cycle of generational mental health issues and dysfunctional relationships can be challenging, but it is entirely possible with conscious effort, support, and understanding. Here are 7 actionable ways to break the cycle:1. Acknowledge and Understand the Patterns2. Seek Professional Help (Therapy and Counseling)3. Set Healthy Boundaries4. Model Healthy Behaviors for the Next Generation5. Practice Self-Care and Build Emotional Resilience6. Promote Open Conversations About Mental Health/Relationship Challenges7. Focus on Healing and Forgiveness and sometimes even griefSome Final Thoughts:Generational patterns are deeply ingrained in family dynamics and can significantly impact mental wellbeing across generations. Breaking generational cycles related to mental health and dysfunctional relationships requires deep reflection, intentionality, and often, outside support. Each of these steps can be a powerful tool to start the healing process—both for yourself and for future generations.  Resources Mentioned: The Soul of Shame by Curt ThompsonThe Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk M.D. Follow Care to Change on Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/CaretoChange.org/Follow Care to Change on Instagram @care_to_changeSee our YouTube page hereIf you would like someone to come speak to your group about anxiety, depression or mental health, contact us for more details. If you are struggling and ready to take a step toward freedom, schedule an appt today.

Book a Free Consultation with Peter Today I'm going to do a podcast on self care.  And the reason why I'm doing it now is that I find that December January time to be in some ways the hardest time.  And I just had this idea. I'm recording this a couple weeks before the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays. And I'm like, Peter, you're going to need to really listen to this in a couple of weeks.  But yeah, I'm going to be honest. I find December and January to be tough.  December, because there's so much going on.  And January, because even if I'm in California, it's cold. Sometimes it's really rainy. And I feel sometimes overwhelmed by the entire year ahead of me. And I hope someone out there relates to that.  I do find December and January to be the two trickiest months of the year. All the rest I'll take. But December. December, I particularly find December tough, but January's tough too.  The focus of this podcast is on self care. What I most need to do when I'm feeling overwhelmed, whether that be because there's so much going on or because there's so much ahead of me.  A couple of phrases: Whatever you put before taking care of yourself, you're going to lose.  And the thing you're probably gonna lose is your sanity, your peace of mind, your serenity.  Also, I find that taking care of myself pays enormous dividends.  I wish I'd mastered that one so much sooner than I did. But at least I think I've got it now.  Which is taking care of me, loving me, because I'm the person who I'm going to be spending the most amount of time with in my life, and I want to make sure that I have the best relationship with me that I possibly can. And in order to do that, I need to take good care of myself.  The Language of Letting Go by Melody Beattie There's a phrase in coaching and I believe I did a podcast episode about it called planting a seed.  It's a very powerful tool where you say to yourself, “Yeah, I don't know how I'm going to get everything done, but you know what? I know I'm going to figure it out.” This first quote is from Language of Letting Go, and Melody says, “I don't precisely know what you need to do to take care of yourself, but I know you can figure it out. Rest when you're tired. Take a drink of cold water when you're thirsty. Call a friend when you're lonely. Ask the universe to help when you feel overwhelmed.  Many of us have learned, many of us have learned how to deprive and neglect ourselves. Many of us have learned to push ourselves hard. When The problem is that we've already pushed too hard. Many of us are afraid the work won't get done if we rest when we're tired. The work will get done. It will be done better than work that emerges from tiredness of soul and spirit.”   Seems obvious, but how many times do I just push through?  I think one of the things that I've learned to do is when I get really tired, is I stop for five minutes and meditate. I find that really helpful.  OMG, how many times do I let myself get dehydrated?  Take yourself out to a cafe and journal, if you've got a lot on your mind.  Thank you universe for helping me to change the story of my being overwhelmed. I invite you to support me in changing this and making a shift.  And I think more than anything for me, it's when my soul gets tired. When I literally ache in my solar plexus because I'm so spiritually tired because I've been giving so much. But not giving to myself. Remember that balance. Find that balance. Give to yourself. It's okay to stop.  It's okay to stop and breathe. It really is.  And you know what? If something falls apart, I know, planting a seed here, you'll be able to handle it. Because we are never given more than we can handle. We are just given more than we can control. Because guess what? Controlling is not our business.  Managing and handling is.  “Nurtured, nourished people who love themselves and care for themselves are the delight of the universe.”  And I will add to that, that good can come easily. If you're a workaholic, that's a hard one to swallow, but it is a true concept. And that is a True that good can come easily.  “People who are nourished. and nurture themselves are well timed, efficient, and divinely led. Today, I will practice loving self care, even if it just means taking a breath.”

Listen to today's podcast... Do you know how many litres of eggnog are sold each December? Here in Canada it is 5.2 million litres.   This will be a very different holiday for many of us. We know that our stress levels are elevated significantly by all of the challenges and changes that we have faced, and the holidays will just add to that overall stress.   This isn't the season to be stressed, but many of us will experience Festive Fizzle Out even before the celebration begins.   Rather than skipping the eggnog or the holidays, the first step to a ‘stress less' holiday is to determine your most important goal for the season.   Bring back the meaning of the holidays by taking care of yourself and by simply showing people you appreciate them.    Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency!      Here are today's tips for Building Resiliency and Preventing Festive Fizzle Out   Get back to basics and simplify. Don't be afraid to alter tradition. Try simplifying things and build in more time for relaxation.  Avoid ‘holiday perfectionism'. Thinking, saying, or planning for the best holiday ever can lead to certain disappointment. Stop and be in the moment. Have you noticed the wondrous sights, sounds, and smells around you or have you been too caught up in the to-do's or the extra amount of work you have to do to notice? Acknowledge your feelings. Take into account the changes, challenges, and losses that you have experienced. Remember to keep your perspective and to talk positively to yourself about past challenges that you have overcome. Practice Self-Care. Remember your ultimate goal for the holiday and get support and assistance from those around you to meet those needs. Make sure to take care of yourself by resting well, and eating a balanced diet. Focus on gratitude. Research shows that the more that you do, the happier you will be.   Finally, I love this quote: “Gifts are all around us, but it is up to us to recognize them in our lives.”   If you like today's resiliency tips, let me know. Tactical Living

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, we tackle the unique pressures that the holiday season (Amazon Affiliate) brings for first responders. While many families celebrate together, first responders often face the reality of working through major holidays, which can create feelings of guilt, disappointment, and stress. We explore practical ways to manage these expectations and make the most of the time you do have with your loved ones. The holidays don't have to be a time of stress—let's discuss how to find joy, even when your schedule doesn't align with traditional celebrations. The Emotional Pressure of Missing Holidays as a First Responder: The holiday season can be particularly challenging for first responders who work through major celebrations, leading to feelings of sadness, stress, and guilt. We'll explore the emotional impact and why it's important to manage these expectations with both family and yourself. Five Practical Ways to Manage Holiday Pressures: Communicate Early and Set Expectations: Have open conversations with your family about your holiday schedule ahead of time. Let them know what to expect, and plan alternative celebrations that work around your shifts. Clear communication can prevent misunderstandings and help everyone plan accordingly. Create New Holiday Traditions: Just because you can't celebrate on the actual holiday doesn't mean you can't create your own traditions. Consider a “pre-Christmas breakfast,” a “New Year's Eve lunch,” or a “Thanksgiving in January.” Creating special moments outside of traditional dates can be just as meaningful. Focus on Quality Over Quantity: It's not about how long you spend together but the quality of the time you have. Make the most of the moments you do have with loved ones, whether it's a quick coffee before work, a movie night, or a short family dinner. Prioritizing quality interactions can make even brief time together feel significant. Set Boundaries Around Your Time Off: When you do have time off during the holiday season, set clear boundaries to fully disconnect from work. Turn off work-related notifications, resist the urge to check emails, and focus entirely on enjoying time with your loved ones. Practice Self-Care to Manage Holiday Stress: Don't neglect your own well-being during the holiday season. Take time for self-care practices that help you recharge emotionally and physically, whether it's taking a quiet walk, meditating, or engaging in a favorite hobby to alleviate holiday-related stress. Making the Most of Your Time Together: We'll share tips on how to create meaningful memories, even if the time together is short. Ideas like family games, cooking a special meal, or doing a favorite holiday activity can help build lasting memories, regardless of the date on the calendar. How to Handle Family Disappointment with Grace: Missing traditional holiday gatherings can lead to disappointment for both you and your family. We'll discuss how to handle these emotions with empathy, how to explain your job's demands, and ways to keep family bonds strong even when you're apart during the holidays. Finding Joy in Unconventional Celebrations: The holidays don't have to look like a Hallmark movie to be meaningful. We'll explore how finding joy in unconventional celebrations—like decorating the tree in February or having a summer cookout instead of a winter feast—can bring unique happiness to you and your family. Join us as we provide encouragement, practical tips, and support for navigating the pressures of the holiday season as a first responder. Welcome to the Capacity Conversations Podcast. This is what I like to call a “sister-friend” community, which is the safe space to talk openly and honestly about the challenges we face while managing the competing priorities between our personal and professional lives. Many of us are either in corporate, an entrepreneur of a combination of the two, on top of being moms, wives, caregivers, big sister's or just the go-to person in our circles of friends and families. Having all that responsibility can leave you overwhelmed and depleted if you don't take inventory of where you're at on a regular basis. In this episode, I'm sharing what I know to be true about saying what we want and having the courage to do it… knowing better is NOT enough! You can know all day long, but if you keep knowing, and never do, you'll keep going in circles. So how do you actually go from knowing better to doing better, you ask? I have 3 key ways to help you walk the talk: 3 Keys to go from Knowing to Doing Better Prioritize Your Priorities - this means making time to list out all the things you think you need to do, and then prioritize them. You have to remember that everything that's important isn't always essential... figure out what that is for you. Get Accountability Partners - this means finding like minded and like hearted people who will hold you accountable when you can't do it yourself. It also means getting vulnerable enough to seek and ask for help. You can find some right in my Flow and Flourish community on Facebook! Practice Self-Care - this is an inside job. Yes, get the mani/pedi and massage, but it also means being honest with yourself and pausing long enough to identify what you want/need in this season, and aligning your actions to your values and goals. After you've listened, I invite you to connect with me social media. I love to hear how this is helping you, so make sure you tag me on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn with your favorite takeaway from the episode. Don't forget to get the Flow and Flourish Course to help you on your journey! As a Capacity Coach, my philosophy is that when you flow effortlessly, you flourish tremendously. And when you do, it allows you to show up in excellence in all the areas of your life. My promise is to help you increase and manage your capacity without ever having to sacrifice yourself, your family, and what matters most to you! Don't forget to subscribe, rate and review the podcast, it makes a big difference! And of course, make sure you share this with at least 3 women you know need to hear this! In this episode of Real Recovery Talk, we explore the intricate dynamics of codependency with guests Ben Harrison and licensed mental health counselor Nicole Montgomery. Together, we take a deep dive into the roots of codependency, how it impacts relationships, and why it's crucial to address for both individuals in recovery and their loved ones.   Recognize and Acknowledge Codependent Behaviors The first step in overcoming codependency is identifying it. Be honest with yourself about patterns such as prioritizing others' needs over your own, feeling responsible for others' happiness, or struggling to set boundaries. Set Healthy Boundaries Start establishing clear and healthy boundaries in your relationships. Learn to say “no” without guilt, and prioritize your emotional and physical well-being. Boundaries allow you to maintain your sense of self and prevent burnout. Practice Self-Care and Self-Compassion Focus on taking care of your own needs, both emotionally and physically. Engage in activities that bring you joy and help you reconnect with yourself. Developing self-compassion is essential for breaking free from the need for external validation. Seek Professional Support Working with a therapist, especially one experienced in codependency, can be incredibly helpful. A licensed professional can help you uncover the root causes of your codependency and guide you toward healthier relational patterns. Develop Independent Interests and Relationships Pursue hobbies, goals, and friendships outside of your codependent relationships. Cultivating a sense of independence allows you to rely less on others for validation and fosters personal growth. These tips can guide you toward breaking the cycle of codependency and creating healthier, more balanced relationships. Nicole provides her professional insights into how codependency manifests, while Ben shares his personal experiences with it. We also offer practical tips and strategies to help you recognize codependent behaviors in yourself or your relationships and actionable steps to break free from the cycle. Whether you're directly struggling with codependency or supporting a loved one, this episode is packed with valuable tools to guide you toward healthier, more independent relationships.

What is self-care? Is it literally just the practice of "caring for ourselves?" Or is it something deeper? On this episode of Everyday Theology, Jacob talks about what self-care is [and isn't] and how we can make sure a simple practice doesn't morph into a form of spirituality or worship of something other than God. n the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, staying motivated and productive is key to achieving success. With countless tasks to juggle and deadlines to meet, entrepreneurs often find themselves grappling with burnout and dwindling motivation. However, by incorporating effective productivity hacks into their routine, entrepreneurs can boost their motivation and maximize their efficiency. In this synopsis, we'll explore some of the insightful tips and strategies shared by Wayne Weathersby on his "Productive NOT Busy" podcast, aimed at helping entrepreneurs unleash their full potential and achieve their goals. 1. Establish a Clear Vision and Purpose At the heart of entrepreneurial motivation lies a clear vision and purpose. Wayne Weathersby emphasizes the importance of defining your long-term goals and aligning your daily actions with your overarching vision. By understanding the "why" behind your endeavors, you can stay motivated even during challenging times. Weathersby encourages entrepreneurs to regularly revisit their vision, refining and adapting it as needed to stay focused and inspired. 2. Prioritize Tasks Effectively In a world inundated with tasks and distractions, effective prioritization is essential for maintaining productivity. Weathersby advocates for using techniques such as the Eisenhower Matrix or the Pomodoro Technique to identify high-priority tasks and allocate time wisely. By focusing on the most important tasks first and breaking larger projects into smaller, manageable chunks, entrepreneurs can make significant progress while minimizing overwhelm. 3. Embrace the Power of Automation and Delegation Entrepreneurs often fall into the trap of trying to do everything themselves, leading to burnout and inefficiency. Weathersby suggests leveraging automation tools and delegating tasks whenever possible to free up time and mental bandwidth. Whether it's automating email responses, outsourcing repetitive tasks, or hiring virtual assistants, embracing automation and delegation allows entrepreneurs to focus on high-value activities that drive growth and innovation. 4. Cultivate a Growth Mindset A growth mindset is essential for navigating the challenges and uncertainties inherent in entrepreneurship. Weathersby emphasizes the importance of viewing setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth rather than insurmountable obstacles. By reframing failure as a natural part of the journey and embracing a mindset of continuous improvement, entrepreneurs can maintain resilience and motivation in the face of adversity. 5. Foster a Culture of Accountability Accountability is a powerful motivator in driving progress and achieving goals. Weathersby encourages entrepreneurs to surround themselves with supportive accountability partners or join mastermind groups where they can share goals, track progress, and hold each other accountable. By regularly reviewing achievements and setbacks with others, entrepreneurs can stay motivated and accountable to their aspirations. 6. Practice Self-Care and Well-being Entrepreneurial success is not just about hustling and grinding—it also requires prioritizing self-care and well-being. Weathersby emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance, getting adequate sleep, exercising regularly, and engaging in activities that recharge and rejuvenate the mind and body. By prioritizing self-care, entrepreneurs can sustain their energy levels, boost creativity, and prevent burnout in the long run. 7. Celebrate Milestones and Progress In the pursuit of ambitious goals, it's easy to overlook the progress made along the way. Weathersby encourages entrepreneurs to celebrate even the smallest victories and milestones, acknowledging their hard work and dedication. By recognizing progress and expressing gratitude for achievements, entrepreneurs can stay motivated and inspired to continue pushing towards their goals. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wayne-weathersby/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wayne-weathersby/support

We often forget about the self care that can happen in the inbetween moments of our day. The little things that we can do to fill up our cup and keep us steps away from burnout. Self-care isn't just about the big things, and when I realized that it really helped me to figure out how to put self-care into the pockets of my day that I had space in. Even just five minutes could make a big impact! I'm sharing some of my favorite self-care strategies that only take minutes! What you'll learn: → how I created my self-care list. → ways to prioritize in your day. → 10 ideas to create your self-care list. Want to skip ahead? Here are key takeaways: [3:07] Creating my self-care list was harder than I thought. I had to really think about what filled my cup versus what was “trendy” or what other people said was top on their list. Things like meditation and reading a book wasn't something I got excited about. So I took the time to really think about what I enjoyed. [4:06] Building this into my regular day looks like a lot of different things. If a meeting ended early, I could take some time for myself. Sometimes I'll purposefully schedule breaks so I know have time in my day. It could also be letting yourself sleep in if you need the extra rest, or accepting the help someone is giving you. [8:15] #1 – Grounding or laying on the floor. This is a good way to re-center yourself. It involves standing barefoot in the grass or dirt, or just laying flat on your back and just resting. [9:46] #2 – Eating lunch away from your desk. First off – I have to remind myself to eat lunch! But then, it's also taking that time for myself and not working through it.  [10:54] #3 – Don't check your email before bed. Just put your phone down. There is nothing worse than checking your email before bed and seeing that email that is urgent, frustrating, or even exciting. You can't unwind and truly relax before bed when those emails come in. [11:53] #4 – Play a game on your phone. Have a few moments between meetings or just need to take a break? Set a time and check out. Play your favorite game on your phone and allow yourself a few moments to relax.  [12:15] #5 – Take a walk or move your body. Depending on the time of year I might take a walk around the block. Or, sometimes I'll just run up and down the stairs a few times. You could also just walk around your house and listen to a fun podcast. [13:05] #6 – Watch TV. I personally love a good reality tv show or rom com. Put something on you can use to escape for a moment and just relax. Don't forget to set that timer. [13:40] #7 – Breathe. This seems simple but sometimes just pushing your chair back from your desk, closing your eyes, and taking a few deep breaths can really help. [14:31] #8 – Play the piano, or your instrument of choice. I love playing the piano, but you could grab any instrument you like. It helps me relax and get out of a different mindset. Play something fun and relax for a moment. [15:32] #9 – Call a friend. Connecting with people you love can really help with your mental health. Call and check in on someone and take a few moments to catch up. [16:28] #10 – Get takeout. Whether its for lunch or dinner, give yourself a break. Get that meal you love and don't worry about having to cook (or do the dishes). Sometimes we just need it. For Empaths: Practice Self Care and Self Kindness DraftSep 25, 2023 Empaths are unique individuals who are often misunderstood. As babies and small children they learn that they are unlike other family members. Some children are accepted and respected but this attitude tends to be the exception. Empaths have a heightened sense of perception. They are highly sensitive to loud noises, large crowds and social events.  Empaths are seekers of the truth and have keen insights and intuitions. The society and even within their families, these gifts are not accepted and valued. Rather the empath is treated like a person who is odd, peculiar, someone who doesn't fit in.  True empaths are rare and extraordinary. Their perceptions about human nature and individuals in particular are very accurate. Often these individuals are not believed. Many growup in families that discount this level of high consciousness and intuitive sight. Self care and self kindness are essential practices for empaths: Protecting Your Sleep and Rest: Honor your sleep. Don't let others, especially demanding individuals-narcissists- interfere with your sleep. The great healer is sleep, a profound activity that we are designed for. Sleep is part of all human and animal species. It nourishes and restores every system: skeletal, muscular, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive, endocrine, lymphatic and the mitochrondria in every cell.  We are created to follow the natural daylight and night---to sleep when darkness comes at night and to awaken when the sun rises and radiates in the sky throughout the day.  Sleep protects and strengthens the immune system, restores our vital energy and decreases inflammation. In sleep the unconscious speaks, bringing us dreams that are mysterious, healing and insightful. We are often daunted by the meaning of our dreams. Nevertheless, they are invaluable although often inscrutable. In many cultures for hundreds of years the habit of taking a rest has been part of a daily routine. Rest offers physical, psychological and emotional refreshment. Having the freedom to think in quiet, to enjoy one's solitude and creativity is a very pleasant activity. This gives us a feeling of well-being. It offers a great opportunity to move into the parasympathetic nervous system, the restorative, healing mode.  Protecting Your Psychological Boundaries Respecting your personal boundaries is an essential part of your positive self-entitlement to inner peace. Recognize that you can say "No" to the narcissist who is constantly making outrageous demands, lying to you, projecting venomous rage. Developing a strong sense of self-regard is essential to eatablishing and maintaining boundaries. Separating out of the narcissist's delusion world you move forward along your unique individual pathways of psychological and creative development. Setting Your Personal Pace: Each individual has a natural tempo, a way of moving that is unique to them. As a child, spouse or partner of a high level narcissist you spent many years dancing to their choreography. High level narcissists are often peripetetic---they never stop moving. You have been trying to keep up with their rapid pace and constant demands for too many years. This is your time your space, your pace, your dance.  Spend time with Nature, her beauty and Inspiration: We are part of Nature. It showers us with gifts of magnificent beauty. Nature is our home, an inspiration for creative thinking, a companion that inspires, nourishes, calms and delights us.  Developing Your Unique Routine: Daily routines that you are motivating, creative, healing and restorative.  Decide on your priorities, try different schedules, choose activities that appeal to you. Leave room for flexibility. Don't be judgmental. There are no mistakes in choosing the elements of your routine. Enjoy your choices. Honor your unique needs, wishes, energy levels, deep interests, appreciation of beauty, the manifestation of your singular individuality. MINDSET: Why Are We Scared To Try Things? In this podcast episode, we will explore effective strategies and insights for overcoming fear and insecurities. Inspired by the idea that fear and insecurities are created by us, we will delve into practical steps to regain control over our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. Join us as we embark on a journey of self-empowerment and learn how to overcome the barriers that hold us back from living our fullest lives. Step 1: Acknowledge and Understand Your Fears and Insecurities Take the time to identify and acknowledge the specific fears and insecurities that you're currently experiencing. Understand that these feelings are normal and that many people face similar challenges. Reflect on the impact these fears and insecurities have on your life and your goals. Step 2: Challenge Your Thoughts and Beliefs Recognize that fear and insecurities are often rooted in negative or limiting beliefs. Begin questioning the validity of these beliefs and challenge them with rational and positive counter-arguments. Replace negative self-talk with affirmations that reinforce your strengths and capabilities. Step 3: Cultivate Self-Awareness Develop a deeper understanding of yourself by practicing mindfulness and self-reflection. Observe your thoughts, emotions, and patterns of behavior without judgment. Recognize the triggers that intensify your fears and insecurities, and learn to respond to them with compassion and self-care. Step 4: Set Realistic Goals and Take Action Break down your goals into smaller, manageable steps. Start with tasks that feel less daunting, gradually building momentum and confidence. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small, and use it as motivation to keep moving forward. Step 5: Seek Support and Guidance Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or professionals who can provide guidance and support. Share your fears and insecurities with them, allowing yourself to be vulnerable. Surround yourself with a positive and uplifting community that encourages personal growth. Step 6: Embrace Failure and Learn from It Understand that failure is a natural part of growth and learning. Embrace failures as valuable lessons and opportunities for personal development. Use setbacks as stepping stones to refine your approach and strengthen your resilience. Step 7: Practice Self-Care and Self-Compassion Prioritize self-care activities that promote emotional and mental well-being. Engage in activities that bring you joy, reduce stress, and foster self-confidence. Treat yourself with kindness and compassion, acknowledging that overcoming fear and insecurities takes time and effort. Conclusion: By implementing these steps, you can reclaim your power over fear and insecurities. Remember that it is a continuous journey, and progress may come gradually. Stay committed, be patient with yourself, and celebrate each milestone along the way. With perseverance and self-belief, you have the potential to transcend your fears and insecurities, unlocking a life of confidence, growth, and fulfillment.
