    On the final episode of Season 1 of Casual Misfit Radio, the Misfit Crew talks about how pop culture influences our expectations in life, and how grand gestures skew those expectations even further. From marriage proposals that go viral, serendipitously falling in love after dropping books in the school hallway, or finding out there's more to the world outside of what we perceive on TV, books, film, and even music (particularly early 2000s love songs), it seems like narratives got us caught up in thinking that life and how we interact with other is but a fantastical, self-centered dream.

    “If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.” --Toni Morrison   There's also the quote from Mark Twain: "write what you know."   Western media is experiencing a bit of a much-needed renaissance when it comes to inclusion and diversity, but it still has so far to go. And walking along those lines can lead you into a minefield when it comes to the question about writing outside of your own experiences.   Whether you're yay or nay or in between, writing outside of our own experiences comes with problems, and many writers may not have the right kinds of experiences or nuance to effectively do so. But dig even deeper: why write outside of your own experience? Is diversity and inclusion just another way to earn a quick, sure dollar? Is it pandering? Is writing outside of your own cultural or sexual experiences ever okay?   The Misfit Crew try to unpack a hefty topic, and come to some conclusions about how we can be better supportive of marginalized voices, what diversity means in the face of capitalism, and how writing outside of your own experience may reveal some hard truths about your own actual experience.

And how who we are vs. what we want to be is one a constant struggle.   Kyle is joined by a special guest, voice actress and writer Anairis Quinones as they wax poetic about the emotional impact the movie had on them. They also discuss the how the film reflects on them as Black artists, how American status quo conflicts with their personal goals, and they try to decide which side of the tethered they are in their daily lives.   HEADS UP: There are light spoilers in this episode!     For the first time, Casual Misfit Radio is bringing on a guest for the week. And we're proud to have friend of the show Jesse Torres on board to talk about something near and dear to his and Kyle's heart: Dragon Ball Z.   An article written by Gita Jackson over at Kotaku explored Dragon Ball Z and the Black Experience, and it was a piece that resonated with Kyle so much that he had to dedicate an entire episode to it.   This week, Kyle and guest Jesse talk about what Dragon Ball Z--and anime and eastern storytelling in general--has taught them and how it has formed them as artists and informed their experience as black men. They also dive into what it means to say yes to yourself, how integral community is in art, and how Grave of the Fireflies is still a powerful, relevant, tear-jerking anime.   All of this comes ahead of the new Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie, which harkens back to the show's roots.
