A New Sustainable CultureThrough the rise in pop culture, climate change awareness has increasingly been integrated into the entertainment industry. Particularly in the Black community, multimedia cultural campaigns are used to increase interest in environmental movements with the use of light-hearted, fun content. Artists, musicians, and influencers are leveraging their platforms to highlight the impacts of climate change and promote sustainable practices, which, in turn, provides easily accessible resources and information to marginalized communities that empower them to participate in the fight against climate change. Black Communities and Environmental JusticePopulations of color face disproportionate energy burdens caused by climate change. A study conducted by Rice University found that Black communities were more prone to live in vulnerable areas, a generational problem caused by the history of Black gentrification. Even now in 2024, Black communities in Georgia are forced to pay higher electricity bills, despite having lower rates compared to other states, due to old and inefficient household systems. According to the National Black Environmental Justice Networks, African Americans were also found to breathe in 56% more pollution than they cause, whereas their White counterparts breathe in 17% less pollution than generated. African Americans are also 75% more likely than White Americans to live in polluted communities, leading to 13.4% of African American children suffering from asthma, compared to 7.3% of White children. Starting in the 1970s, some black musicians included environmental themes in their productions. Artist Marvin Gaye released “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” to tackle discussions about oil spills and mercury waste; funk group Earth, Wind, & Fire released “Burnin' Bush” to bring awareness about the global destruction of Mother Earth. Those themes continue today in  music produced by Black artists, such as in the popular single “Feels Like Summer” by Childish Gambino, which conveys worries about uncertain impacts caused by global warming. Additionally, artists such as SZA have partnered with brands to promote sustainable merchandise, encouraging a societal paradigm to rely on eco-friendly products. Representation and EducationWith more than 50% of the world's population active on social media, people are continuously exposed to the influx of information circulated by entertainment. Through the entertainment industry, climate news has become increasingly accessible and engaging, allowing communities to educate themselves on sustainability and mobilize action. Although hip-hop and rap were once considered controversial music genres due to themes of violence, drugs, and misogyny, there is a growing effort to utilize the storytelling aptitude of these genres for social and environmental commentary. Artists use rhymes and flow in hip-hop and rap to effectively share the living conditions, natural disasters, and climate injustice that people face. This empowerment of entertainment has motivated marginalized people to strengthen their community bonds and collaborate in fighting against climate change. The widespread influence of entertainment is fostering inspiration for a new culture promoting climate equity and agency, as well as the normalization of environmentalism in society.  Who are the co-founders of Klean Energy Kulture?Corey Dennard and Michael Hawthorne Jr. (Akachè Marcino) are the co-founders of Klean Energy Kulture, a non-profit environmental entertainment company. Corey Dennard, popularly known as Mr. Hanky, is a hit producer who has worked with top charting artists, including Snoop Dog, Usher, and Soulja Boy. Michael Hawthorne Jr., also known as Akachè Marcino, is an environmentalist and political organizer. Hawthorne has worked on Barack Obama's first presidential campaign and Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign. Episode 22 of the Titles Are Overrated podcast was quite a ride! The hosts explored many interesting and bizarre topics, some of which left us wondering if we need to send them to therapy.They started with a discussion on what traits attract people, and the AI-provided list included confidence, a sense of humor, good communication skills, kindness, intelligence, ambition, attractiveness, emotional stability, passion, and physical fitness. We're not sure if the hosts possess any of these traits, but we love them anyway.Next, they delved into the tricky territory of dating someone transgender, and whether it's okay for someone to withhold that information until later in the relationship. It left us feeling confused and grateful for our simple lives.Then, they discussed the French government filter laws for Instagram. We're not sure how Instagram could prompt such a heated debate, but we were entertained nonetheless.Things got even more interesting when the hosts questioned why people put family stickers on the back of their cars. We're still scratching our heads on that one.The topic of sex parties then came up, and we were left wondering if the hosts were revealing too much about their personal lives. They claimed it was just a hypothetical discussion, but we're not so sure.Overall, this episode was a wild ride. The hosts proved that titles may be overrated, but their humor and wit certainly are not. Welcome to Proper Mental episode 95 with Samuel Jack, the musician and song writer behind the viral hit song, Feels Like Summer. Samuel grew up in South Africa and is now based in London and before his music took off, he worked in high end hospitality to pay his way. For years he juggled long, stressful shifts in kitchens with traveling for gigs and writing music and this would eventually catch up with him as his mental health declined to the point of breakdown. In this episode Samuel and I chat about the pressures of working in hospitality and the particular lifestyle that comes with that line of work. He takes me through his breakdown and everything that led to it and we talk about what happened as he moved out the other side and how he got well again. We chat about his upbringing in Johannesburg and how it formed an early love of music, learning to write songs and the challenges of being a musician. Even though we couldn't have our weekly zoom call, it was great to hear everyone's voice in the audio clips. It's important to celebrate our wins (big or small), commiserate our losses, and set goals to keep us moving forward. We hope you all had an excellent fourth of July weekend and enjoy all the things summer offers! From picnics and BBQs to swimming and tubing down rivers, there's so much fun to be had. How do you make the most out of the longer summer days? Do you feel a change in rhythm when school is out or when we reach June 21st on the calendar? Are there other signals that notify you or give you permission to live differently in that season? No matter your official work hours, we are all given the opportunity to switch things up during these longer days to dive into things we often feel we must put on hold. While summer doesn't officially begin until June, the end of the school year is when summer officially begins for us. With the anticipation of a shift in our routine, longer days, and later nights I found myself last week preparing me for the shift in our routine. While in years past I did not have any hard commitments that others were counting on me for, this summer is one in which I do. And not only for others, but also for myself making this a summer where a balance of fun and work will need to coexist together.
