In 1985 following the collapse of a pro wrestling documentary director John McNaughton had a 100,000 dollar budget to create a horror film. Inspired by an episode of 20/20, McNaughton teamed with co-writer Richard Fire to craft a fictionalized depiction of infamous serial killer Henry Lee Lucas’ reign of terror. Implementing every corner cutting technique at his disposal and Michael Rooker’s breathtaking commitment to character the picture would startle and intrigue audiences for generations. Following the success of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre it seemed only a matter of time until a similarly toned film would be released. The writing team of Robert and Steven-Charles Jaffe wrote a script meant to be directed by Massacre Director Tobe Hooper but when Hooper was unable to helm the project, director for hire Kevin Connor was brought on changing the direction of the picture completely and on October 18th, 1980 MOTEL HELL was released. In the 1980’s the love affair with the work of Stephen King could not be denied. Producers from every studio snatched up the rights for any story with his name attached to it. It was in this wave of consumption that New World Pictures acquired the rights to a short story of kings that he wrote a treatment for. In 1975 brilliant young film auteur Brian De Palma at the behest of a friend became aware of a young New England writers telekinetic tale of a girl discovering herself and her terrifying power. By the middle of the 1990’s Director John Carpenter was coming to the end of his contract with Universal. Owing one more film to the studio, the director was tasked with reimagining the John Wyndham novel The Midwich Cuckoos but his disenchantment with the studio system and frustration with production led to a lapse of ambition on behalf of the Master of Horror and a lapse in interest with audiences.
