This week we're joined by our friends Johnny Cann and Tyler Hyde from That's Spooky as we celebrate women's history and women in horror with a look at the last movie you'd think would be appropriate for such an occasion. Slumber Party Massacre, from 1982, is a sleazy, lurid spectacle with an unexpected background. Written in 1978 as a spoof of slasher movies by radical feminist icon, Rita Mae Brown, it ended up in the hands, of all people, of Roger Corman, who turned it over to his editor, Amy Holden Jones as she set her sights on directing for the first.Full of gratuitous nudity, gore, and people making a lot of bad decisions it's a remarkably entertaining piece of slasher horror with a wild production history that ultimately caused the second wave of feminism to turn on Rita Brown in a really unfortunate way.

Bogusię i Martę możecie wspierać kawą o tutaj.

Today Ade, Doug, Mikey and Jason go head-to-head to discuss the titular driller killer, phallic nightmare that is Slumber Party Massacre, both old and remake! Listen as we discuss the surprisingly feminist themes of 1982's Roger Corman's Slumber Party Massacre. The film was written by Rita Mae Brown and directed by Amy Holden Jones - both women! However, some may view it as exploitative, so find out why we don't see it as just that. Syfy Channel's 2021 remake of the same name plays on that exploitative trope, as it switches gears and shows off the boys' bodies this time, but still preserves the dark humor and turns the franchise on its head. All in all, we find it a solid remake/reboot, so listen in to find out why. What are your thoughts on this one? Does Slumber Party Massacre from 1982 still hold up for you today? We take a little journey through horror history, with a three-part series focusing on films directed by women. Let's get things started with a psychopathic hitchhiker, a horny desert vampire, a toxic monster, and a denim-clad driller killer!A pioneer in women's filmmaking, Ida Lupino directs a claustrophobic movie set in the wide open desert, that is in truth more classic film noir than horror. What would you do if the guy you just picked up on the side of the road told you that he was going to kill you? It's just a matter of when. Maybe you should at least consider killing him first, in The Hitch-Hiker (1953).Roger Corman disciple, Stephanie Rothman decides to keep us in the desert a little longer, as she directs a film that really wants to be arty and erotic. A couple is invited to the desert home of a mysterious woman who has designs on getting both of them in the sack. But wow, it's a little challenging to get interested in the sexuality when the acting is somewhat lacking, to say the least. But hey, if you're into that sort of thing, The Velvet Vampire (1971) may just become a cult favorite for you.Less than a year after we discussed Blood Diner (1987), we thought that we had better check out Jackie Kong's first feature film. Pottsville, Idaho. They love potatoes, but they will sweep away smut. So don't even think about opening that massage parlor in their town! Radioactive toxic waste is fine, though. Until some kid goes missing and becomes a mutated toxic monster that rips off heads and delivers one hell of a heart punch, in The Being (1981)And how many people would guess that The Slumber Party Massacre (1982), written by Rita Mae Brown, was also directed by a woman, Amy Holden Jones? With an escaped serial killer on the loose, stalking teenage girls (but he likes the boys, too), it's not difficult to figure out what that enormous power drill he carries around is supposed to represent. This 80s slasher VHS rental favorite might be a lot more fun than you expect.

Of course, their fun Friday night of Twinkies, gossip, and weed turns into a blood-soaked nightmare--but this smart, darkly funny, and imaginatively sequenced thriller rises above the rest.Ian and Chad look at what sets this female-helmed horror movie apart from other films of the day (despite sharing several features of its contemporaries), as well as its deft handling of sexual politics and symbolism.Plus: Chad talks about the new Kickstarter campaign he's producing for a frightfully delightful new book called "Poems of Grave Importance" by Ridley Mortis (with art by Mitch O'Connell, Jeff Carlson, and others)!Learn about the tome, the tiers, and the tons of super-cool add-ons available in the final days of the project!Show Links:Watch Slumber Party Massacre (1982) trailer.Support Chad's Kickstarter for "Poems of Grave Importance" by Ridley Mortis!Timestamps: Intro: 0:00 - 4:08The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) Review: 4:09 - 1:01:12About "Poems of Grave Importance" Kickstarter Project: 1:01:13 - 1:19:08Outro: 1:19:09 - 1:20:45Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

In this episode of The Resident Rulebreakers, Kayla and Camille discuss episode 2x09 - "The Dance", as well as all the recent news about Emily VanCamp. Written by Amy Holden Jones and Andrew Chapman, Directed by Rob Corn. Original Airdate: November 26, 2018 - Recent News: - Emily and her husband, Josh, had a baby girl that they named Iris. Actual birthdate is unknown. - After revealing she has given birth, news broke that Emily has decided to leave The Resident, which leaves fans wondering what happens to Nic. - The new promo released in the past week somewhat hints at the route the show will probably take with Nic's fate. - Amy Holden Jones reveals that Rob Corn is the director of 5x01. - There is no official press release or photos from Fox yet for the premiere - but we predict that that information will be revealed SOON. - Episode 2x09 Discussion: - Devon Doesn't Get Married Since before the pilot, Devon has been engaged to Priya - now it's time to get married. Devon has second thoughts after his infamous kiss with Julian and a conversation with his mom. He decides to call off the wedding - which causes Devon and Priya to have one last fight where we believe both had valid reasons for feeling how they felt.  The wedding outfits designed for this episode were so beautiful. Irving as best man and Bradley as a groomsman. *LOVE IT!* As much as Julian didn't want to be the reason Devon doesn't marry Priya - she is THE reason - and there's no denying that she didn't willingly accept being kissed by Devon. We also both agree that if it had happened, a divorce would have also happened very soon after - especially with Priya deciding to work on the west coast. - Julian In 2x08 - Julian comes to the realization that QuoVadis is a fraudulent company and she decides not only to quit her job, but blow the whistle on it to the FDA.  In one of the episode's cliffhangers, Julian is ran off the road by Gordon Page's henchmen - and leaves us hanging for 9 episodes wondering what happened to her. We are very glad they resolved this plot. - Marshall Marshall reveals he has Chron's Disease after he has a flare up that causes him to need emergency surgery - and the doctor on call is Bell. An option both Marshall and Conrad dislike. This is the other cliffhanger for the episode - and while Marshall survives the surgery, his conversation with Conrad about Conrad's mother is one that after all this time still hasn't been resolved. We'd love to see this storyline have closure. Nic is the push for Conrad to talk to Marshall - and we are all for it.  - The Old Man Conrad, AJ and Mina treat an older man who has a heart murmur.  Conrad envies the relationship the man has with his daughter and grandson - and makes that point to Nic very clearly. AJ and Mina do surgery to repair the murmur and make it to Devon's "wedding" with time to spare. The man just wants to get back to his charity work in Nicaragua. - The Free Clinic Nic and Mina are trying to get Bell on board with the free clinic - especially since Chastain has to do community outreach to remain tax exempt. Kayla wishes they would bring a form of the free clinic back - but wonders how it would work now that Chastain is a public hospital. - Micah Run, Micah, Run. If we were him - we'd run after hearing the comments Mina makes about marriage and having kids in this episode. Kind of ironic he proposes to her 5 episodes later - thankfully he realized it wasn't going to work out. - Grayson Loved seeing Grayson in this episode, but seeing him makes us really want him to return to The Resident as Kit's assistant. - Bell Bell is working hard to make sure Chastain doesn't have its image damaged by Lane Hunter who is blackmailing him with a sex tape for her bail money. Unfortunately, Bell goes to Gordon Page for the bail money and the hospital goes bankrupt because of it. This storyline finally was resolved this past season with Chastain going public. Seriously, Bell? What were you thinking? We don't miss this version of Bell at all. - Upcoming: - September 20 - News Rundown - September 27 - Episode 5x01 Discussion - October 4 - Episode 5x02 Discussion - October 11 - Episode 5x03 Discussion - October 18 - Episode 5x04 Discussion - October 25 - Episode 5x05 Discussion *This is our last podcast of our 4th season. The parallels of their families having money changes everything for two young kids with diabetes. Jack survives and gets excellent care, Abby is rationing her insulin - and ends up in the ICU in diabetic coma.  The crisis of how expensive insulin is in America - a 1200% increase in price and the drug never changed. In this week's The Resident Rulebreakers, Camille and Kayla talk about episode 4x14 - "Past, Present, Future" - the season 4 finale. - We talk about what we dub as "baby gate" - which is the show's use of a doll in place of the #CoNic baby (aka Georgiana Grace "Gigi" Nevin Hawkins) due to a Covid restriction and the reaction it got from the fandom (to the point of eclipsing the other news of the week). We defend the use of the doll under the circumstances the show was handed, and also note that Amy Holden Jones has promised a real baby next season. The show got renewed for season 5!!! The show will return this fall to its normal timeslot - Tuesday at 8 pm ET/PT for a full season run. Morris is leaving the show to be the lead for another show on Fox - but will recur as Cain for a few episodes next season - we predict to wrap up his storyline. Shaunette cast across from Harrison Ford in new Indiana Jones movie. We hit 14,000 downloads this past week - and are so grateful for all the support!!!  Happy belated birthday to Matt - who turned 44 this past Thursday. -   Episode 4x14 was written by Amy Holden Jones and Andrew Chapman, directed by Rob Corn.   -   The birth of the #CoNic baby  Camille predicted her name - and nickname  "Baby gate" - and the BTS of it all We love the grandpa brigade - and how they make us miss our own grandfathers - who have all passed away AJ's mom She had a tumor in her spine that her treatment healed but now she is numb below the waist and is having issues walking.  Cain comes into the OR to help Kit and Billie last minute - despite his issues with AJ. A relief to us - and AJ! We can't believe it either. Poor AJ - we sure hope his mom survives this. We can't see him put through the ringer anymore. Cain leaving Cain takes meeting for a job at John's Hopkins - a way for them to write Morris out.  Still with Rose - guessing she's going with him  Kit's moral dilemma Devon's friend Phillip sales Bio South to a Big Pharma company because it was so successful in healing Rose. Devon and Conrad aren't happy - and neither is Kit - however Chastain is now $900 million in the black. Is it good or bad? This seems to be where season 5 will go with the show's villain. #Kitdolph We need them now - but predict they will stay will they/won't they for some time to come. However - we just loved Bell comforting Kit after she realizes the moral implications of saving Chastain - as well as her being there for Bell when Sammie was being adopted. Jake, Gregg and Sammie become a family Due to Bell pulling some strings - Sammie is adopted by Jake and Gregg in an emotional in hospital ceremony that made us both cry. We so hope to see them again next season! Also, how cute is grandpa Bell? The Domino Transplant Jake's friend and Leela's friend both need livers but there aren't enough to go around - so they do a Domino transplant to save two lives. Devon feels great about being able to help so many people - and sees the ghost of his dad knowing that due to his grief he was able to do some good in more than one life that day. Leela and Devon We knew it was going here - but why? Leela is so strong and amazing on her own - and also Devon's intern. We really hoped for more development on her own. We don't want her to just be Devon's love interest because she deserves so much more than that. Billie meets her son Billie's son shows up on her doorstep in the episode's cliffhanger - and we seriously hope that the storyline won't be dragged out next season. It's a storyline we'd love to see wrapped quickly in season 5. - Did this episode feel like a series finale instead of a season finale? It was written and taped months ago - so the chances are they wanted to play it safe incase renewal didn't come through. - Upcoming Podcasts: - May 31 - Episode 4x09 Discussion - "Doors Opening, Doors Closing" Discussion (Kayla was sick when it aired - so we didn't get to do the podcast that week - so we decided to go ahead and do it since it's the only episode from season 4 we haven't done.)   - PATREON Want to help us keep growing the podcast? Episode was dedicated to Amy's late husband Michael Chapman who was an award winning director of photography who had worked with Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. He passed back in September. -  Topics: - CoNic and Nic getting stabbed (we both cried on this episode). Also, Kyle's reaction to learning he has a granddaughter. Matt's acting on this episode deserves an award! The way the whole team rallied around them proves these characters love each other like family. - Minator and how they were handling the changes around them as well as Nic being hurt. The support they showed each other was so amazing. - The hospital closing - we went into this episode knowing the hospital was moving to a public hospital - but seeing it in process of closing didn't change how we felt about it. We love that Marshall came in with the hail Mary and talked to the new governor of GA and got her to agree to the hospital becoming public. - Henry and the suprising solution from a suprising source that saved his life. Cain's suggestion of using glue gave Henry a few more years on his life. - Cain's awake, but trached. He worries about Nic and gives a solution to AJ and Mina on Henry. He ends up at the vent farm because the hospital shut down and he can't breathe on his own. The 1980’s were filled with iconic slasher movies but writer Rita Mae Brown decided to take a stab at the genre with her script called “Sleepless Nights” that served as a parody to the killer chases teenagers until a final girl survives trope that filled so many horror films . Producers had another idea and repurposed her script into something a little more straight forward with Amy Holden Jones taking on directorial duties. The end result was “Slumber Party Massacre” — a slasher film where the killer isn’t supernatural but rather an escaped mass murderer picking right up where he left off by killing anybody and everybody he meets. One critic called the movie “an entertaining terror thriller” and despite a budget of just $220,000, the film went onto gross more than $3.6 million at the box office. This week on “Rewind of the Living Dead,” we’re going to order some pizza and sharpen our drills as we discuss the 1982 classic “The Slumber Party Massacre”…

TOP NEWS: - We send our deepest condolences to Amy Holden Jones and her family on the passing of her husband, Michael Chapman. He was a famed director of photography on movies like Taxi Driver and Jaws.  - Kayla's uncle passed away last Sunday. It's been a rough week, but we promised a podcast to you, so she pushed through to provide you with the best podcast she's capable of giving - as a co-host and as the editor. - In this podcast, we discuss episode 1x10, "Haunted". Directed by David Crabtree and written by Andrew Chapman. - The team deals with the death of Lily - which causes Conrad to see her "ghost". Also, Lane Hunter is pushing for an autopsy, which has us wondering why. Wouldn't she want to hide her insurance fraud? - Conrad sprains his ankle after he gets hit by bicyclist while running and forgoes treatment until everyone around him forces him to get it. He does put a shot of cortisone in it to help with pain. Nic finally is able to ice and bandage the ankle after they finish their shift. - #CoNic - They discuss their grief, which allows them to grow closer and they end up sleeping together at the end of the episode. - Dr. Eileen Jacoby, one of Conrad's mentors and former professors, is seeing the "ghosts" of patients she feels regret that she couldn't save. Ends up being a bleed in her frontal lobe, and Conrad also helps her get therapy. She also begins to help him cope with losing Lily. Also, Mina's a bit of a fan girl and credits Dr. Jacoby for her wanting to be a surgeon. - Bell operates on the 2nd richest man in China at Chastain and ends up almost killing him. His ego is so much that when Jude jumps in to help save the patient, Bell and him argue and Jude gets fired. Bell fixes the problem and takes full credit. Also, a $10,000 watch - which is illegal. - Bell's now on Xanax. Is this where the tremor went? Was it stress induced? - Jude's last episode - He is fired by Bell and goes to help with Doctors without Borders, but not before pushing Conrad to talk to Nic about Lily's death. - Lane and Bell? Ewwwww! The kiss is gross! She's also pushing for him to be CEO and push Claire out. - Not gonna lie, this episode was hard to watch, but it makes us say please hold those dear to you close. Tell them you love them and don't say things you will regret later. You never know when it will end. - We will be taking a two week hiatus to deal with exhaustion and personal issues. We will return at the end of October with our two part Halloween special that discusses "Nightmares" (2x06) and "Belief System" (3x04). - There's a tentative start date of the second week of October to start production on season 4 of The Resident. Conrad and Nic diagnose her properly with Wegener's Disease, a rare auto immune disease. Also, Bell's a hypocrite for wanting to dump her until he knows she has money to pay the bills. Something he fusses at another hospital for doing. - A male escort that Devon and Irving are treating for an eye injury teaches Devon to not be embarrassed by his parents and their cultural views. - Micah returns for a check up and tries to get Mina to go out with him on a date. - We will be taking a two week break beginning of October because we are exhausted and need a break. - PATREON: -Want to help us keep growing the podcast? Hawkins’ secret language, BEETHOVEN, and our coverage of TIFF’s Midnight Madness! Chris tells us about the 1971 giallo THE BLACK BELLY OF THE TARANTULA, and Dave talks about Shudder’s LAST ONES OUT. Then, after briefly discussing Shudder, TENEBRAE, and our memories of SCREAM, we really get into it. We discuss peeping toms, conflicting production visions, final girl showdowns, confusing nudity, snail chopping, eating pizza off of corpses, parody/comedy in slashers, garage door continuity, and power drill logic. It’s another great Slasher September episode of the TEXCHRIS DAVESAW MASSACRE! Continue reading →
