This week, Sidney discusses the 1979 original and 2006 remake version of When a Stranger Calls, including the similarities and differences and the true story that inspired the movie.
“I don't think you're alone in this house… You should get out of there. Now.” For the second week of 2025, The Blind Rage Podcast takes a look at Fred Walton's sequel to his 1979 classic. In WHEN A STRANGER CALLS BACK, we're introduced to Julia (Jill Schoelen), a babysitter who is menaced by a voice on the other side of the door, as opposed to the other end of the phone. A man claims to have had a breakdown and requests aid. It isn't long, however, before Julia realizes just how dangerous this particular stranger actually is.
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE BLIND RAGE PODCAST!!! We're kicking off 2025 with 1979's WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, a film which has been terrifying audiences for decades with it's portrayal of a babysitter (Carol Kane) who receives menacing phone calls from a psychopath who is a lot closer than she thinks. Though she manages to escape, he re-enters her life seven years later, now putting her new family in harm's way.
In this chapter, we answer the chilling call of a legendary urban legend that has left us with frayed nerves for generations: the ominous words, "The call is coming from inside the house." Join us as we unravel the origins, eerie narratives, and psychological terror behind this haunting urban legend. We'll explore how it has become a timeless cautionary tale, rooted in genuine fears and anxieties, as it taps into our deepest concerns about safety, the unknown, and the places we call home whilst also studying the true crime cases that connect to its origins.Text Me (this is 3rd party & I cannot respond, but I see all messages)Support the showIf you have more information or a correction on something mentioned in this chapter, email us at luke@lukemordue.com. Oh my god, don't answer the phone! Or maybe you should? Well, we found out what happens "When A Stranger Calls Back" and it's not good! And also it's not the same stranger. New teenager. New scary guy. Same Carol Kane and Charles Durning. Is this the scariest movie Jason has ever seen? Did Jules see this as a kid and check corners of his house with a bat cause that dude could be there? I guess you'll have to find out in this here episode of We Doing Spookies.
Let's talk scary movies, my man Tom Atkins, spending Halloween at the psych hospital, a little Norman Bates, my crush on Teri Copley, a decent brand new Netflix thriller, a possible Billy Mays commercial, a great Italian zombie horror comedy, a couple movies you won't ever want to watch twice, watch April Fool's Day on Halloween, hiking with a valley girl, somehow working in Little House on the Prairie, a crush on Kristy Swanson, a bunch of lesser loved Wes Craven movies, trick or treating memories, more complaining about this modern age, the mysterious purple people, and a spooky song. Stuff mentioned: Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), Donovan "Season of the Witch" (1966), Night of the Creeps (1986), National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985), The Monster Squad (1987), Manhunter (1986), The Goonies (1985), Popcorn (1991), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990), Psycho II (1983), We Got it Made (1983-1984, 1987-1988), Don't Move (2024), Yellowstone (2018-present), Horizon: An American Saga-Chapter One (2024), Don't Blink (2014), Idle Hands (1999), Breakdown (1997), Cemetery Man aka Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), Stage Fright (1987), Valentine (2001), Angel (1999-2004), Bones (2005-2017), Red White & Blue (2010), Frontier(s) [2007], April Fool's Day (1986), Scream (1996), When a Stranger Calls (1979), Valley Girl (1983), Frank Zappa and Moon Zappa "Valley Girl" (1982), Happy Birthday to Me (1981), Cape Fear (1962), The Guns of Navarone (1961), Little House on the Prairie (1974-1983), Deadly Friend (1986), Shocker (1989), The X-Files (1993-2018), Cursed (2005), Happy Days (1974-1984), Zapped (1982), My Soul to Take (2010), Pulp "Underwear" (1995), and Pulp Different Class (1985).
We really screwed up watching the sequel first. Here's a whole movie about a babysitter getting scary phone calls. Just 90 mins of heavy breathing. Just kidding, we were both shocked when, much like the 2nd film, it is a completely different movie after the first 20 minutes and we were fully on board with Charles Durning getting his detective on. WHY IS THIS NOT A CLASSIC ON THE LEVEL OF OTHER CLASSIC SPOOKIES?!?!? Rate, review (you can pick a movie for us to cover if you do an apple podcast review) subscribe and dive into the back catalog.

So why did it take over two years for people to realize she had died? (No One Noticed She Was Dead) *** A castle in Scotland is so cursed that it has continued for several generations. (The Centuries Old Curse of Fyvie Castle) *** Year after year a 1950 photo from a German newspaper has continued to circulate amongst Ufologists and UFO enthusiasts. The story claims to show a short extraterrestrial humanoid standing next to two full-sized men. So why hasn't Germany admitted to the photo's validity? (The Little Green Man That Refused to Die) *** “The call is coming from inside the house.” These eight words have been uttered by countless children, and mark one of the most popular urban legends of all time. This legend, unfortunately, is rooted in a real unsolved murder case from 1950. Welcome to another episode of "We've Got the Beat." Join hosts Michael and Mindy as they dive into the psychological depths of horror films, exploring the trauma and fear that drive the genre. This episode focuses on the classic horror movies "When a Stranger Calls" and its sequel, analyzing their portrayal of teenage trauma and its long-lasting repercussions. Michael and Mindy discuss the impact of low-budget filmmaking on the horror genre, comparing the raw fear elicited by early slasher films to the polished, yet less terrifying, remakes of the 2000s. They highlight the performances of actors like Carol Kane and Jill Schoelen, emphasizing how their portrayals add depth and realism to the narrative. From urban legends and psychological thrillers to the evolution of horror tropes, this episode delves into what makes these films enduringly terrifying. Whether you're a seasoned horror aficionado or a casual viewer, this discussion promises to offer new insights into the art of scaring audiences.
Welcome ladies, germs, and people of all genders! Join Taylor & Curtis as we continue tackle a topic 40+ years in the making – that's right, we're covering Siskel and Ebert's famous “Women in Danger” episode. In that episode, our boys Siskel and Ebert (or “Rog” as we call him) absolutely savage the 80s slasher, decrying them as misogynistic and violent towards women, even suggesting the fans of these movies are “vicarious sex criminals” (and actual quote!). So, what else is there to do other than cover two of the movies discussed in this classic episode? Are your intrepid hosts “vicarious sex criminals”? Are we easily manipulated by advertisements from Bravo reality shows? Would you be scared by a haunted hair brush? In this episode, Dustin borrows a page from Jason's playbook and swings us back for a potentially forgotten gem. So join us as we check out Paul McGuigan's Push from 2009. Don't you hate it When A Stranger Calls (1979)? At least they aren't murdering you these days.
Our homes are meant to be where we feel the safest, so it makes sense that there's an entire horror movie subgenre dedicated to home invasions. The Strangers, Panic Room, Funny Games, When a Stranger Calls, even Jordan Peele's Us. All those movies play on the innate fear we have that our most peaceful area would be disturbed by those that would do us harm. Unfortunately, there are people out there that would do us harm just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Today, we're finishing one of those stories. Show Notes Free Palestine One of the most unspoiled movies of all time, we watched When a Stranger Calls from 1979. If you have heard of this movie but haven't seen it, it's likely that you are only privy to the first 20 minutes of the film. It's tense, but it gets wild after we leave the house from which the call is coming. Carol Kane shows off her lungs. A husband listens to and believes his wife. An ex-cop goes rogue. And Colleen Dewhurst just tries to get a damn drink. All of them circle a very sick, very disturbed man played in an unnervingly sympathetic way. We're gonna spoil it so you should absolutely watch beforehand to see what happens when a stranger calls. In s02e04 “When a Stranger Calls Back” of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin: Summer School, Imogen poorly recreated the end of Sixteen Candles with Johnny. Tabby is still saddled with an assault trauma plot-line from season 1. Mouse suddenly remembers she inspired the whole stupid Spooky Spaghetti thing. Noa blows off work for a montage with Jen, and then gets her actual boyfriend to hand over two grand to bail her ass out of jail, and then cheats on him. And Faran, the strongest (and dumbest) Sinner faces her incredibly contrived “Final Girl Test.”

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are closing out our Home Invasion Thriller theme with the influential When a Stranger Calls (1979). Unfortunately, just because a film is influential doesn't mean it is essential, and that is sadly the case with this film, as its boring middle half brings the entire film down and makes it basically not worth starting in the first place. I would almost suggest just watching the intro scene and then turning it off. I gave this a 5/10 because there were flashes of brilliance and there is a reason that this film is influential i.e. the intro scene, but everything else was pretty much a letdown. 7/23/21: STRANGER CALLS – CREEPY CALLERS Apart from mysterious phone calls that are believed to be from the dead, are the very real phone call and numbers that leave us feeling cold and creeped out. While we can say that phantom phone calls and numbers of the weird can be attributed to psychokinetic phenomena, we know that they are very real and the human element can also be just as macabre and unknown. Tonight on Ground Zero, Clyde Lewis talks about STRANGER CALLS - CREEPY CALLERS.Originally Broadcast On 7/23/21
This week, we're dialing it in for 1979's "When a Stranger Calls." We talk about the original's iconic moments, surprising twists, and why a call coming from inside the house is still the scariest. Listen now.

Spooky spooky! We're back with some more Halloween-month content for you. This week we dive into two movies, "When a Stranger Calls" (1979) and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (1997). We talk about the urban legends that inspired them (the-call-is-coming-from-inside-the-house and the tale of the Hookman, respectively), along with their possible connections to true stories. SPOILER WARNING: We don't hold anything back on either film, so might want to watch them before listening to this episode. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
