Horror history gets dangerously domestic this week as This Week in Horror History travels through June 1–7 with haunted houses, killer sequels, cursed children, dystopian violence, mature themes, and one deeply uncomfortable genetic-engineering nightmare. This episode digs into a packed week of classic horror movies, cult horror sequels, supernatural horror, Blumhouse hits, and underrated sci-fi body horror, including the return of Norman Bates, the suburban nightmare of Poltergeist, the perfectly timed 6/6/06 release of The Omen remake, and the birth of The Purge as a modern horror franchise.Inside this episode:• Psycho II brings Norman Bates back to the Bates Motel in one of horror's most surprisingly strong legacy sequels.• Poltergeist turns the American dream house into a supernatural trap full of TV static, cursed land, and unforgettable 1980s horror imagery.• The Omen remake arrives on 6/6/06, turning a horror release date into pure Antichrist marketing gold.• The Purge launches a massive Blumhouse franchise with one terrifying idea: for twelve hours, all crime is legal.• The Deep-Cut Spotlight goes to Splice, the disturbing 2010 sci-fi horror film about genetic engineering, parental failure, and the nightmare of creating life without the courage to take responsibility for it.Plus: a horror birthday roll featuring Danielle Harris, Keith David, Robert Englund, and Jessica Tandy, a creepy look at what these stories say about control, family, suburbia, and civilization, and a weekly recommendation for Sean Byrne's vicious prom-night horror film The Loved Ones. From haunted television screens to cursed children, science gone rotten, and a society where the rules turn off for one night, this week proves horror is often scariest when it moves into the places that were supposed to keep us safe.

Tread Perilously's month of slasher TV leads to Bates Motel for an episode called "Underwater." After dealing with dope-smoking young people staying at the motel, Norma is ready to pull up stakes and move to Hawaii. Norman, meanwhile, is getting positive reinforcement at school and is not happy about the possibility of starting life over again. Meanwhile, Dylan agrees to help Bradley recover some of her father's belongings from his office. Emma enjoys a cupcake (not a euphemism). And, elsewhere, a largely unseen Ben Abernathy menaces Norma from afar. But did he send her the roses that really set her off? Erik lays into Russell T. Davies for seemingly no reason. Carlton Cuse also gets examined. Both note his shows tend to disappear into the ether. Justin reveals Bates Motel was his first exposure to Olivia Cooke. The rest of the cast, which includes Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, also get high marks. Erik appreciates the way the episode deploys Jere Burns while Justin enjoys the presence of Nestor Carbonell. The clearly foreshadowed issues with Miss Watson lead to a long discussion. Justin explains the difference between Norman and Mother. Geography Corner applauds the choice to move the story to Oregon and the Ashmore Alarm needs adjustment.

[School of Movies 2024] For this rather special episode, we firstly welcome to the show for the first time, director Alfred Hitchcock, as we examine his most famous and most revisited film, Psycho (1960). This became the wellspring from which modern-day detective thrillers emerged. But it also has tangled roots in Horror and the grubby stepchild of its sub-genres, the slasher. While other films like Charles Laughton's Night of the Hunter (1955) and John Lee Thompson's Cape Fear (1962) -both weirdly starring Robert Mitchum- were also hugely important, Psycho was less about the stalking killer as it was a torrid dive into the swampy waters of their mind. Deriving from a 1959 novel by Robert Bloch, who lived down the road from Ed Gein as he was being arrested for trying to make a woman-suit, this story, along with Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs (1988) assisted greatly in the lurid, pulp sensationalism of the twisted deviant killer-man-in-a-dress mythology. Despite quiet, clear, firm, researched and experienced protestations from trans folk and their allies who keep having to remind the world at large that they aren't toilet-lurking monsters. We also look at the stunningly ill-advised shot-for-shot remake of the Hitchcock film, directed in 1998 by Gus Van Sant. Superficially, these are exactly the same film, but the devil is in the details. Next week we will be returning to Bates Motel with the far less well-known, but actually pretty good Psycho II, which more pronouncedly paints Norman as a victim.
