A bunch of teenaged girls have a sleepover while other teenaged girls on the same street aren't invited. Who else isn't invited, you ask? Why, a slew of men! Written in 1978 as a spoof of slasher movies by radical feminist icon, Rita Mae Brown, it ended up in the hands, of all people, of Roger Corman, who turned it over to his editor, Amy Holden Jones as she set her sights on directing for the first.Full of gratuitous nudity, gore, and people making a lot of bad decisions it's a remarkably entertaining piece of slasher horror with a wild production history that ultimately caused the second wave of feminism to turn on Rita Brown in a really unfortunate way. New narrative was a way of mixing philosophical and literary theory with writing about the body and pop culture. It was promoted by a group of writers in 1970s San Francisco. One of the chapters in New Generation Thinker Diarmuid Hester's new book Nothing Ever Just Disappears explores their work. He joins Dodie Bellamy in a programme exploring different aspects of the gay imagination and the re-inventing of tradition presented by Naomi Paxton. Alongside them is Lauren Elkin, author of a study of unruly bodies in feminist art called Art Monsters which explores artists including Carolee Schneemann, and the influence of writers like Kathy Acker. And James Corley has adapted a play, opening at Wilton's in London, which takes an influential essay by Merle Miller as its starting point. Customs officers raided the London bookshop Gay's the Word on April 10th 1984 and seized 144 titles. A campaign was mounted after the directors were charged with conspiracy to import indecent books. Dr Sarah Pyke tells Diarmuid Hester about an oral history project which aims to raise awareness of Operation Tiger and how it ties into wider work on a history of queer reading. Dr Ina Linge has been looking at the way LGBTQ+ people used autobiographical writing to critically engage with the science of sexology and how their writing was used by and critiqued the work of sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld and a book based on this research called Queer Livability: German Sexual Sciences and Life Writing is coming out in 2023. Proust as an agony uncle, Romeo and Juliet rewritten as 21st century Welsh teenagers in a new drama by Gary Owen, the Lesbian coming of age novel by Rita Mae Brown that inspired the lead character in Willy Russell's Educating Rita to change her name and a new book inspired by the historical figures who collaborated on the first English medical textbook on homosexuality. Tom Crewe's novel The New Life depicts the married lives and love triangles of John Addington Symonds and Henry Havelock Ellis and the impact of Oscar Wilde's trial on their attempts to publish their study of what they called "inversion". Happy Monday Goons and welcome to our first official Back To School episode of Slashers Podcast during spooky season September! Today Ade, Doug, Mikey and Jason go head-to-head to discuss the titular driller killer, phallic nightmare that is Slumber Party Massacre, both old and remake! Listen as we discuss the surprisingly feminist themes of 1982's Roger Corman's Slumber Party Massacre. The film was written by Rita Mae Brown and directed by Amy Holden Jones - both women! However, some may view it as exploitative, so find out why we don't see it as just that. Syfy Channel's 2021 remake of the same name plays on that exploitative trope, as it switches gears and shows off the boys' bodies this time, but still preserves the dark humor and turns the franchise on its head. We take a little journey through horror history, with a three-part series focusing on films directed by women. Let's get things started with a psychopathic hitchhiker, a horny desert vampire, a toxic monster, and a denim-clad driller killer!A pioneer in women's filmmaking, Ida Lupino directs a claustrophobic movie set in the wide open desert, that is in truth more classic film noir than horror. What would you do if the guy you just picked up on the side of the road told you that he was going to kill you? It's just a matter of when. Maybe you should at least consider killing him first, in The Hitch-Hiker (1953).Roger Corman disciple, Stephanie Rothman decides to keep us in the desert a little longer, as she directs a film that really wants to be arty and erotic. A couple is invited to the desert home of a mysterious woman who has designs on getting both of them in the sack. But wow, it's a little challenging to get interested in the sexuality when the acting is somewhat lacking, to say the least. But hey, if you're into that sort of thing, The Velvet Vampire (1971) may just become a cult favorite for you.Less than a year after we discussed Blood Diner (1987), we thought that we had better check out Jackie Kong's first feature film. Pottsville, Idaho. They love potatoes, but they will sweep away smut. So don't even think about opening that massage parlor in their town! Radioactive toxic waste is fine, though. Until some kid goes missing and becomes a mutated toxic monster that rips off heads and delivers one hell of a heart punch, in The Being (1981)And how many people would guess that The Slumber Party Massacre (1982), written by Rita Mae Brown, was also directed by a woman, Amy Holden Jones? With an escaped serial killer on the loose, stalking teenage girls (but he likes the boys, too), it's not difficult to figure out what that enormous power drill he carries around is supposed to represent. This 80s slasher VHS rental favorite might be a lot more fun than you expect.
