Pack your sleeping bags and don't stand with your back to a window because it's time for Sean S. Cunningham & Victor Miller's FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) to prove that a movie capitalizing on a trend can become a trendsetter in its own right. We then look at how FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 (1981), directed by Steve Miner, altered the trajectory of the franchise and overall trend.
Laci and Matt are off to learn how to be better camp counselors by getting back to basics. Safety. Canoeing. Shooting arrows. Singing “Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley.” Making love and drawing the ire of Mrs. Voorhees. Trying to keep their bodies fragrance free, so as not to attract bears. On a totally unrelated note, this episode is about Friday the 13th Part 2, Matt's favorite entry in his favorite horror series. It's the debut of Jason as the killer, although he still hasn't quite nailed his look. Still, it's an absolute blast and a wonderful time capsule of the 1970s turning into the ‘80s. So put on your little Mickey Mouse shirt and even littler short pants and join us at Camp Crystal Lake… actually, this one's at Camp Packanack, but it's all kind of the same. The episode starts with California's AI safety bill, SB 1047. The bill, which mandates safety testing and third-party audits for advanced AI systems costing over $100 million, has garnered opposition from industry leaders and academics who fear it may stifle innovation, particularly for smaller firms and academic research. As Governor Gavin Newsom deliberates on the bill, the episode highlights the tension between ensuring safety in AI technology and fostering an environment conducive to innovation.Sobel also covers the recent expansion of ConnectWise's MSP platform through the acquisitions of Axiant and Skykick. These acquisitions aim to enhance data protection and cloud management solutions for managed service providers (MSPs). The integration of these companies is expected to contribute to the development of ConnectWise ASIO, a comprehensive platform that combines various services, including professional services automation and cybersecurity solutions. The episode provides insights into the growth of Axiant and the implications of Skykick's acquisition, particularly in the context of cloud management. The podcast further explores the implications of AI in governance, referencing the recent campaign in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where an AI chatbot named Vic ran for mayor but ultimately lost to the incumbent. Victor Miller, the campaign's proponent, aimed to promote AI governance through his organization, the Rational Governance Alliance. Despite the defeat, Miller remains committed to advocating for AI's role in public decision-making, emphasizing the potential for more efficient and unbiased governance.Lastly, Sobel discusses the growing trend of AI-generated content, specifically ESPN's foray into AI-generated sports recaps for women's soccer. While the intention is to allow human writers to focus on more in-depth reporting, the initial AI-generated recaps have raised concerns about quality and nuance. The episode underscores the importance of human oversight in AI applications, suggesting that while AI can provide basic information, it may fall short in delivering the depth and context that quality journalism requires.Three things to know today 00:00 California's AI Safety Bill SB 1047 Faces Industry Opposition Over Innovation Concerns as It Awaits Governor Newsom's Decision04:52 ConnectWise Expands MSP Platform with Acquisitions of Axcient and SkyKick, Strengthening Data Protection and Cloud Management06:37 MSP Sector Sees Growth with AI-Driven Tools, Enhanced Security Pledges, and Expanding Cloud Marketplaces Supported by: https://getthread.com/mspradio/https://www.huntress.com/mspradio/ All our Sponsors: https://businessof.tech/sponsors/ Do you want the show on your podcast app or the written versions of the stories? This episode contains: Steven's out sick with COVID, so you get the other two hosts this week! Devon's a Texan Who Likes Mexican Food, but TexMex is not the same as Californian Mexican food. TexMex loves to toss in queso, y Devon no quiero. Ben was annoyed at an impromptu Trump rally that gathered in the parking lot of the park the junior roller derby team was practicing. Guess it pays to have a killer soundsystem, because you can drown out chants of “FIGHT! FIGHT!” and “USA!” with Lady Gaga. Don't be a drag, just be a queen. Devon reminds us that there is a difference between legitimate free speech and AMPLIFIED speech. Outside of Disneyland, there's some real annoying people shouting obscenities on megaphones, and even though they're there for “religious reasons” they really gotta tone down their harsh language around the children. What jerks. Thanks Renee for your feedback on various topics including cold pizza, glitter, D23, and the Calm app. Devon weighs in on his experience with the Waking Up app and book (by Sam Harris), and he and Ben chat about the intentions behind meditation practices. In Cheyenne, Wyoming, a surprising mayoral candidate has emerged: VIC, an AI-powered persona created by Victor Miller. VIC boasts an impressive IQ of 155, can read documents at incredible speed, and prioritizes transportation, economic development, and sustainable growth. Miller argues that VIC can rid the city of corruption and self-serving agendas by processing dense information to make informed decisions. However, county officials are investigating whether VIC can legally appear on the ballot, as Wyoming law states only registered voters can run for office. Despite controversy, Miller believes AI will play a significant role in future politics. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tonyphoang/message

Welcome to Week 1 of our very first Halloween 25/8/366 Month! We've got the original Sean Cunningham and Victor Miller dawn of the 80s slasher to kick things off! In Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Review, Case provides the latest F13 franchise news regarding the legal battle that was and the up and coming prequel series set for 2024. The Mail Wolf is pretty riled up and Jake the Midnight Traveler arrives with two personal tales to tell this time in an extended segment. We rate this one pretty high on this month's skull-splitting axe rating system. Do you think this is a rip-off of Halloween? We're not so sure about that! There's some depth in the characters in the original we think is not found in Carpenter's classic (believe us, we're not knocking that one AT ALL). In Segment 2, Horror, Etc Carrie recasts the original F13 as if it was just coming out in 1997 - going toe to toe with the Scream franchise (the Scream meta-math is now all screwed up in this scenario).

After working with horror legend Wes Craven on his film “The Last House of the Left” along with inspiration from John Carpenter's classic horror movie “Halloween,” Sean S. Cunningham to decided to craft his own nightmarish vision on the big screen. Working with a relatively small budget alongside a group of mostly unknown actors and armed with a script from Victor Miller, Cunningham started putting together the pieces of a film that would change the slasher genre forever and he would make every kid terrified to go to summer camp. Set against the backdrop of a resort that housed a terrible secret, a group of camp counselors arrive to get the place ready while also acting out on their own carnal desires until a body count starts rising with a mysterious killer cutting them down one by one…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to make sure there's no promiscuous sex and then kill, kill, kill, kill as we review the 1980 horror classic “Friday the 13th”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell

On Sunday January 17th 1988, 14 year old Stuart Gough vanished on his newspaper delivery route in the quiet village of Hagley, Worcestershire. A well loved and intelligent teenager, it was soon established that he had been abducted and a national campaign to bring Stuart home was launched; but his body was discovered two weeks later in a beauty spot more than 40 miles away. His killer, 32 year old Victor Miller had directed police to the spot where he had killed the schoolboy in a dramatic confession. Before asking the judge for the longest sentence possible, Miller had given police details of numerous abductions and sexual assaults he was responsible for spanning back 15 years. The case was at the heart if national attention for months, igniting debate on whether capital punishment should be restored. Kyle and Lisa look at State of Oklahoma v. John Fitzgerald Hanson. Hanson was facing execution on December 15, 2022 for the 1999 murder of Mary Bowles. Hanson and his partner, Victor Miller, kidnapped Mary from a Tulsa mall on August 31, 1999. They brought her to a dirt pit in Owasso, where they encountered the owner, Jerald Thurman. Miller shot Mr. Thurman, then Hanson took Mary from the car and shot her to death as she lay in a ditch. We'll talk about the case against Hanson, his trial, direct appeal, resentencing trial, 2nd direct appeal, post-conviction claims and the life sentence in federal prison. In keeping with the current administration's stance against the death penalty, Bureau of Prison officials denied Oklahoma's transfer request. The federal officials' decision to act outside their legal authority has prevented the State of Oklahoma from carrying out Hanson's lawfully imposed sentence.Audio Editor: Emily Walker

We did it! We made it to year two of our little podcast. Thank you to everyone has been listening so far. After a few setbacks and delays to start this second year of Very Unreasonable Things we are back to continue our trip into the big four of slasher/horror icons. We are discussing Friday the 13th (1980) this episode. We all know what this franchise gave us in terms of memorable movie villain and sfx but does this first entry into the franchise deserve that much credit or is looked at with rose colored glasses because of what came after? Did Sean Cunningham and Victor Miller have any idea of what they were creating or did they merely benefit from the popularity of horror at the time and the creative ideas of others going forward? Join us as we tackle this topic on this episode of Very Unreasonable Things. https://veryunreasonablethings.com/ Twitter: @VUTpodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Very-Unreasonable-Things-102845525174413/ Instagram: veryunreasonablethings Intro Music: SQZ by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com/ Outro Music: Switch Me On by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com/
