It's the UNWATCHABLES Halloween special, and we're dissecting two films that helped pave the way for last year's subject, HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER. With help from return guest Zach Butcher, we consider how two earlier, less “respectable” horror movies deglamorized serial killers by putting us in their shoes: 1980's grimy New York slasher MANIAC and 1983's Austrian cult shocker ANGST. This is also a great time to check out our new and improved Patreon page! This week's exclusive bonus content is a full conversation with Zach about our *extremely* combative rankings of the HALLOWEEN film series. Who better to join our Halloween special than film critic Katie Rife, aficionado of all things horror? She proves her strong stomach by exposing us to two of the most harrowing serial killer films ever made, starting with 1986's hugely influential HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER. We discuss its revolutionary approach to depicting violence, how it comments on the true crime genre, and one of its most repulsive descendants: Fatih Akin's 2019 stomach-churner THE GOLDEN GLOVE. This week we're joined by our good friends Ian Rhine and Jake Serwin of the teriffic Clint Eastwood podcast Pod Casty For Me to discuss the Italian director Nanni Moretti and his 1993 personal essay/anthology film 'Caro Diario', awarded Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994 when Clint served as the Jury President. We discuss Moretti as subject within his own films, and how his arch and effacing tone offers perhaps a more palatable substitute to the films of a once-prominent filmmaker (now mired in controversy) known for his neurotic, self-referential films. Then, we discuss the film's stylistic markers that place it in conversation with not just the legacy of the Italian film industry, but with cinema as a whole. Finally, we talk about family planning and the wonderful world of vasectomies. (*Editor's Note* Aaron's procedure is in November, not Feburary as stated on the show. He's not sure why he said that, but wants listeners to know that he's not planning out his recovery watchlist 4 months in advance like a loser). Listen & Subscribe to Pod Casty For Me. On Episode 23 of our show "Grindhouse Pizzeria" which is dedicated to all things encompassing various Grindhouse, Drive-In, and Exploitation genres; we will be reviewing and dissecting a true powerhouse titan of a film with the chilling and unsettling "HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER". Directed by John McNaughton (The Borrower) and starring Michael Rooker in his feature film debut at the titular Henry. This film follows the methodical Henry and his roommate Otis (portrayed in a chilling early role by the late Tom Towles) as they lay bloody waste to whomever crosses their paths. Caught in the middle of this murdering duo is Otis' innocent sister Becky (played by Tracy Arnold). Henry leaves us with the age old question of 'who will survive and what will be left of them.' This film is notorious for its grittiness and realism and being NOT for the feint of heart. Our discussion is headed off by our regular hosts Tom Komisar and Cameron Scott! Join the two of them for a grueling good time! Come on in at the Grindhouse Pizzeria, pull up a chair and grab yourself a slice! "It's always the same and it's always different."
On this week's episode of The Blind Rage Podcast, we venture down some dark and unsettling terrain with John McNaughton's infamous HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER. Inspired by the real-life slayings of convicted murderer Henry Lee Lucas, Michael Rooker plays the titular role—and boy, does he play it to the hilt. His portrayal of the sociopathic drifter is frightening, dead-on, and oftentimes haunting. Though the subject matter is quite bleak, The Thunder from Down Under and I did our best to have fun with this commentary. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blindragepod/message

Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for… The post HORROR BUSINESS Episode 50: LET’S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH & HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, Our 50th Episode, Or: We Got Nothing Special appeared first on Cinepunx.
Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. On this episode we’re discussing 1971’s Let’s Scare Jessica To Death and 1990’s Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by talking about what we’ve seen or done lately in the field of horror. Liam briefly talks about seeing the Netflix original film Apostle and attending the annual Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horrorthon, and seeing the film Great White aka The Last Shark and Fade To Black. Justin talks about seeing the films Terrifier, Cold Skin, Still/Born, and Slender Man and starting the final season of the TV series Penny Dreadful. First up is 1971’s Let’s Scare Jessica To Death. We begin by talking about the quasi-underrated nature of the film and giving a brief outline of the film. We touch upon the strange and misleading nature of the title and how the film never quite reveals as to whether or not what we’re seeing on screen is real. We talk about the way mental illness is depicted in the film and the possible symbolism of other characters in the film that aren’t Jessica. The concept of an environment being hostile to outsiders is touched upon. Up next is 1990’s Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. Liam talks about how he first encountered the film, and how it is essentially the “anti-80s horror film” and how it didn’t hold up upon a second viewing. We talk about the almost unnecessary cruelty of the film at times and how the excessive violence comes off as just that: excessive. There is a brief discussion on the abandonment of supernatural themes in the early 90s and the rise of the splatterpunk movement. The “nobilization” of Henry and how the film flirts with sympathizing with him is discussed; as is how this is a shortcoming on the part of the filmmakers for waffling on the nature of Henry i.e. is he evil or just misunderstood? The conflation of “intense and violent” with “good and scary” is discussed. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. In 1985 following the collapse of a pro wrestling documentary director John McNaughton had a 100,000 dollar budget to create a horror film. Inspired by an episode of 20/20, McNaughton teamed with co-writer Richard Fire to craft a fictionalized depiction of infamous serial killer Henry Lee Lucas’ reign of terror. Implementing every corner cutting technique at his disposal and Michael Rooker’s breathtaking commitment to character the picture would startle and intrigue audiences for generations. On September 21st, 1986 HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER was released giving filmgoers something “Real”
This week, Becky The Archivist fills in for Quincy as she and Ryan talk about HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER and Vincent Price's THEATER OF BLOOD. Also discussed are dog pies, "Dragula," muppety facial hair, exasperating our loved ones by being on the IMDB trivia page during the movie, and why THEATER OF BLOOD belongs to the gays.

Once again, couldn't resist including this Pop Culture Club episode in the Director's Club feed due to the level of talent involved. And hey, they happen to be directors as well of course, and very good ones. The introduction finds me reflecting on baseball, The Cubs, and the city of Chicago which segways nicely into my first guest who is from the South Side. John McNaughton got his start early on in theater, and then collaborated with talented actors to make the truly disturbing HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER. Most of our conversation is about the making of that seminal horror film, but couldn't resist asking John about working with Bill Murray again as well. Secondly, I talked to Courtney Hunt who had a huge breakthrough success with FROZEN RIVER. Her latest films stars Keanu Reeves as a defense attorney who is struggling with the ethics of his position, all while trying to solve a murder case involving a young adult. I truly thought this film was a step-above most courtroom dramas so don't let that deter you from seeing it. Courtney made a lot of great points surrounding the theme of the reliability of memory as well as what it's like being a woman in the industry. Finally, the last of the conversations involves a duo -- the minds behind the latest animated sensation from Dreamworks, TROLLS. Lots of great songs and a few big laughs were had. This one is definitely going to bring a smile to your child's face. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with directors (and voice actors) Walt Dohrn & Mike Mitchell, the latter of which is also responsible for the underrated SKY HIGH. Essentially, you have a buffet of talent to listen to here, and I promise there isn't a dull moment. In the first part of episode 24, join your hosts Rob Galluzzo, Elric Kane and Rebekah McKendry as they catch up on all the latest horrors! First up, every reports back on their Halloween. Rob celebrated with a handful of horror anthologies including John Carpenter's BODY BAGS, DEADTIME STORIES and TERROR TRACT. Elric went with some classics such as THE WOLF MAN, THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER and Oz Perkins' Netflix original I AM THE PRETTY THING THAT LIVES IN THE HOUSE. Bekah catches up on CHANNEL ZERO and AMERICAN HORROR STORY, and watched LADY IN WHITE and some Disney Halloween goodies. Rob also discusses Netflix's 3rd series of THE FALL starring Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan. Then Bekah challenges both Rob and Elric to a little trivia! Two games: in the first, she names a famous restaurant name and we have to identify what horror movie or TV show it's from. And then, we're provided with a horror movie quote, and must answer which movie it originates from! Play along and join the conversation!
FORMERLY POP CULTURE CLUB: Once again, couldn't resist including this Pop Culture Club episode in the Director's Club feed due to the level of talent involved. The gang returns this week to chat about the 1983 Austrian chiller ANGST, which concerns the dastardly exploits of a murderer just released from prison (all too prematurely, as it turns out). Along the way, the Addicts discuss HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, GHOST DAD (?!), THE LAST WITCH HUNTER (because we can't let a single podcast go by without mentioning that damned film), and the impending departure of an Addict. Ultimately, the gang will weigh in with their final opinion on the movie in a three to one split (spoiler alert: Jinx didn't dig the flick). Have you seen ANGST? Will you see ANGST? Will you run away screaming from any copy of ANGST you happen across? Let us know! Find us on Twitter- @ScreamAddics @Jinx1981 @brian_primm @sethdixon00

Please join the chicks as they welcome to the show Michael Rooker Michael Rooker was born in 1955 in Jasper, Alabama. When he was 13, his parents divorced and he went with his mother to live in Chicago. He caught the acting bug while attending college, and began appearing in local stage productions. On first breaking into film, Michael’s intensity and “don’t-mess-with-me” good looks were highlighted to chilling effect as the title character in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986), filmed in 1986 but due to its controversial nature, not released until 1990. Since that widely noticed and highly praised performance, much of his career has been spent playing brutes, villains and psychopaths. His occasional turns as a “good guy”, however, are always well-acted and a welcome change for a talented actor too often typecast. (IMDB) Michael recently completed filming Season 3 of The Walking Dead. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was released in November, and he will be adding his voice talents to Activision’s upcoming video game The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. Michael will also be appearing in an upcoming episode of Mythbusters, air date to be announced soon.
