Erin Prus recorded the initial Anora episode, Part 1, January 2025 when the movie had already earned plenty of accolades. Weeks later, in February 2025 with even more news swirling about the movie and Oscar buzz, this follow-up episode was recorded. Is the controversy surrounding the movie, which did not have an intimacy coordinator on set, worth debating over? Does it make the movie better, or worse? Does it make Anora, as a work of art, a bolder creative act? Are comparisons to the Julia Roberts and Richard Gere romantic comedy Pretty Woman appropriate? Plus, we discuss stunt coordinators, sports cars, the Madonna-whore concept, and the 2016-2022 HBO series Westworld.-A teacher-journalist turned content designer and UX writer, Erin Prus is no stranger to career pivots. She's been consulting for two seemingly disparate clients in the health tech and horticulture spaces, two things she cares deeply about. Also, she's scheduled to wrap up a forthcoming memoir later this year. When she's not working, Erin loves being outside, spending time with her French Bulldog Rumi, doing Pilates, and watching movies with her son.https://www.cincinnatimagazine.com/article/rachel-chertoffs-bedside-jewelry-is-the-kind-you-never-want-to-take-off/ https://www.edibleohiovalley.com/eov/2022/cincy-urban-farm?rq=CincyUrbanhttps://www.fotofocus.org/2018/10/30/the-biennial-in-book-form/ https://mooprintms.wpengine.com/blog/inspiration/behind-brand-refresh-500px#more-12827-Anora (2024)https://collider.com/first-oscar-winner-actress-janet-gaynor-street-angel-anora/ https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/intimacy-coordinators-challengers-porn-hollywood-oscar-1235910610/ https://medium.com/elucidationtoday/intimacy-coordinator-creating-a-culture-of-consent-in-filmmaking-a805ed4b747e https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/anora-iatse-union-set-1236162501/ https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/views/lives/69502/sex-life-in-defence-of-anora https://variety.com/2024/film/news/anora-intimacy-coordinator-respond-mikey-madison-sean-baker-1236254012/ https://variety.com/2024/film/news/pamela-anderson-mikey-madison-anora-intimacy-coordinators-1236241323/ https://www.vox.com/culture/402258/anora-ocscars-mikey-madison-sean-baker-best-picture -Madonna-whore complex/concepthttps://www.ebony.com/blacks-and-the-madonna-whore-complex-333/ https://www.modernintimacy.com/the-psychology-of-the-madonna-whore-complex/ https://sites.psu.edu/aspsy/2015/10/03/madonna-whore-complex/https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/sexual-futurist/202401/embrace-the-sacred-and-profane-in-your-relationships https://theconversation.com/madonna-or-whore-frigid-or-a-slut-why-women-are-still-bearing-the-brunt-of-sexual-slurs-99292 https://www.thecut.com/article/tradwife-cooking-for-husband-fulfillment.html https://www.themarysue.com/hbo-westworld-feminism/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHmHesDYPzw -Other movies and shows discussed, alphabetical listBlade Runner (1982)Cinderella (1955, 1965, 1977, 2015, 2021)Grease (1978)Hustlers (2019)Pretty Woman (1990)The Stepford Wives (1975, 2004)Striptease (1996)Westworld (series, 2016-2022)

Buy Jon's Books!Reunited after all these yearsThe last time I interviewed Jon Bassoff about a book, Barack Obama was president. Yeah. Jon has had a rewarding career of great book releases since then, and when I saw the synopsis for THE MEMORY WARD, I knew I had to read it and get him back on a call to catch up. This book is going to invite comps like crazy, to stuff like Stepford Wives, Truman Show, and other classic stories about manipulation, control, and the fallibility of our own memories. I even added Memento and The Number 23 to the list in this conversation. So naturally if those things interest you, you should immediately buy this book and tear through it. But know that it's a story that is its own beast, and doesn't ape other stories or sit in a trope. It's a deftly crafted timeline of suspicion, paranoia, deception, and the need to feel in control of our own lives. The setting feels very 1950s, but it's also modern, giving it an eerily manufactured setting which starts you and keeps you on edge. I thought it was delightful, and Jon didn't just hand us a story, he gave us a puzzle to try to figure out, all the way to the last sentence. Just great stuff.Coming up on the podcastI have a lot of irons in fires and so here are some of the names you can look forward to seeing/hearing soon: Nick Kolakowski, Sam Rebelein, Michael David Wilson, Drew Huff, Tim Waggonner, and a lot more! For those who prefer YouTube: This is a public episode. Hey guys, sorry for dropping the ball this month, but a big change happened with the podcast. Other than that, everything is fine? *insert cartoon dog in burning room meme here* Seriously though, things are indeed getting a little weird out there. This week's episode is truncated and more of a film recommendation. Ira Levin penned some of the most popular novels from the 1960s through the 70s: Rosemary's Baby, The Stepford Wives, and The Boys From Brazil — all three had successful film adaptations. Levin had a gift for tapping into the popular consciousness and scaring the bejeezus out of the public. Given the political landscape of the day, The Boys From Brazil went to the top of my viewing list. In this episode, plastic smiles and perfectly coiffed doppelgängers are a veneer of perfection obscuring suburban darkness in Bryan Forbes' The Stepford Wives (1975). Based on the novel by Ira Levin (1972), the film follows a woman named Joanna (Katherine Ross), who moves to a seemingly perfect suburban town only to discover that the women are being replaced with emotionless, submissive robots created by their husbands. Blending social commentary, satire and suspense, the film has been criticized for its “vision of feminism.” But given the current political landscape, does its themes deserve reconsideration? We're breaking it all down today with spoilers, so stay tuned.

New Releases: Companion Director: Drew Hancock Starring: Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid Release Date: Friday, January 31st, 2025 "Companion" is a 2025 American science fiction thriller directed by Drew Hancock, featuring Sophie Thatcher as Iris and Jack Quaid as Josh. The film follows a weekend getaway to a lakeside estate that spirals into chaos after the sudden death of a billionaire. What begins as a tragedy soon unravels into a tense exploration of control, entitlement, and the blurred lines between humanity and artificial intelligence. Critics have lauded the film's suspenseful narrative and dark humor, with some comparing it to "The Stepford Wives" for its modern take on artificial companions and the ethical dilemmas surrounding advanced technology. You're Cordially Invited Director: Nicholas Stoller Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell Release Date: January 30th, 2025 (Amazon Prime) This 2025 romantic comedy brings together Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell for a hilariously chaotic clash of weddings. When Jim (Ferrell), a widowed father, and Margot (Witherspoon), a reality TV producer, realize that both their weddings are double-booked at the same venue, chaos ensues. The unexpected mix-up forces the two families to navigate their differences, leading to comedic confrontations and surprising emotional moments. "You're Cordially Invited" blends classic rom-com elements with sharp humor, making for an entertaining and lighthearted watch. Classic Revisit: A.I. Artificial Intelligence Director: Steven Spielberg Release Year: 2001 Originally developed by Stanley Kubrick and later directed by Steven Spielberg, "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" is a sci-fi film that explores deep philosophical questions about identity, love, and the meaning of consciousness. Based on the 1969 short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long" by Brian Aldiss, the movie tells the story of David (Haley Joel Osment), a child-like android programmed to love. When his human family abandons him, David embarks on a journey to become "real" in hopes of reuniting with his mother. Along the way, he encounters Gigolo Joe (Jude Law), a pleasure-seeking android, and a series of adventures that question what it means to be human. Upon its release, "A.I." received mixed reviews, with some praising its emotional depth and visual effects, while others criticized its tonal shifts between Kubrick's darker vision and Spielberg's sentimental style. Over time, the film has been re-evaluated and is now considered one of Spielberg's most thought-provoking works. Andy Fowler, Communications Specialist for the Yankee Institute, joins us for an episode to discuss Connecticut! Although he wasn't born there, his family has roots in the state that go back to the turn of the 20th century. Garrett & Andy discuss the reputation of Connecticut, its role in the colonial period and the founding of the United States, and the importance of learning about your home state's history. They also joke about the difficulty of pinning down a defining stereotype for people from Connecticut. Mixing assassins and child care; what could go wrong? In 25 parts, edited from the works of FinalStand.Listen and subscribe to the ► Podcast at Connected..“Lying is fine, but take care to not cause suffering because that makes it wrong.”Keys jingled and Timothy walked through the door."Mr. Denver," Nikita got off before I could make introductions."Oh, you must be the cop," Timothy snorted."Does Cáel have so many we are labelled by profession?" her suspicious nature flared up."Nah. Unlike Gomer here," was he calling me a hick?"I'm New York born and bred. I know a police issued Beretta in a hip holster even under a jacket. Also, the next time Cáel calls me Mr. Denver will be the first," Timothy chuckled. "If it's any consolation, I can see why he's risking grave bodily injury by going out with you.""Does he think I'll shoot him if I catch him screwing around behind my back?" she asked pleasantly."Pretty much," Timothy winked at me."Good boy," she patted my cheek."Ah, the prospect of imminent pain reminds me; Timothy, I need two more favors," I begged."This is going to be good," Timothy replied sarcastically."I've got four girls lined up for Saturday night; three high society children and Nikita here. Is this okay, or do I need to take this somewhere else?" I began."This the nine year old?" he questioned."Aya and her two sisters," I replied."Sure. Every Park Avenue babe should get to meet a gay tattoo artist from Queens once in their life before Prom," Timothy nodded sagely. "The other thing.""Yeah; could you double-date with me. There is this school teacher who rooms with her older sister. The sister came through a nasty breakup recently and the teacher asked me if I could help out," I tried to sound upbeat."Wow; I don't know what to say," Timothy's mouth gaped. "I don't know what's dumber; asking your gay roommate to distract his fuck-mates sister so he doesn't end up screwing them both, or requesting this in front of the cop you are almost dating?""Wah; huh; what he said; that last part," Nikita glared at me."Hey, now," I warded her off. "There's barely a week of school left. Then she'll get a summer job and I won't be taking the kids to school anymore and that will be that.""You are sleeping with a teacher at the school your girls attend?" she gasped. "Why?""She's hot," I declared. Nikita looked shocked. "I mean really hot. Not as gorgeous as you, but she's very attractive."Don't think I'd lost my damn mind. I had, in fact, learned something over four years of being far hornier than smart. See, when a girl thinks you are true blue and you cheat, you are a scumbag. If a girl thinks you've slept around and now you are hers and hers alone, you cheating still makes you dirt, but that is ameliorated by the deep-seated fear that she did something wrong. If you are openly a man-whore when you start dating, you can cheat. She thinks she's weaning you off your promiscuous ways. This toleration is not limitless, so be warned. Make every indiscretion count. Eventually she will give up and dump you. Refer to the break-up sex discussion earlier. My mentor once asked me if one woman would ever be enough. I told her that I always thought one woman would be enough and I was always wrong. One of these days I hoped to meet a woman who could satisfy my sexual urges and could keep my balls in a vice to stop me from straying. Then I'd be happy."You need to stop that," Nikita threatened me. "My fiancé cheated on me. I'm not going to put up with it from you.""I already promised them I'd go out at least once," I reasoned. "You wouldn't want me to treat you like that.""I'm not them," she bit her lower lip. "This roving eye of yours has got to stop and soon." See; a license to cheat. I really liked Nikita and I wanted to make an effort to keep her happy. Somehow I could keep my libido under some kind of restraint; for 80 days. Then my co-workers at Havenstone would own me like their prison bitch, providing I was still alive."I'll do my best," I promised. We hugged and kissed. She wasn't gone thirty seconds when my phone rang. It was Odette. I told her to come on over so Timothy shot me with his Nerf gun."Cáel, consider having sex with me," Timothy teased."What? I'm not gay," I pouted."Oh, I know but you'll be dead soon so the sexual ambiguity won't be something you have to deal with for long," Timothy laughed."I'll put it on my bucket list," I sighed. "Double-dating with me?""Sure. It isn't like life with you has been dull," Timothy taunted me. I groaned.(Friday)"I have today off," Odette murmured to me as I cut off the alarm. That had to have been the issue she'd been holding back on last night."I have to work; being the first week of my three month internship and all," I sighed."Are you sure I can't convince you to be late?" she gave me a sultry look. She compounded that offer by stretching out, her knees in place so that her ass rose and wiggled suggestively. Last night I had introduced Odette to a form of doggy-style that didn't involve the man trying to drive her skull through the headboard. We had a long, dual-participant, sensual melding of bodies, control passing back and forth until the need for sleep became something she despised even as it took her."Not fair," I groaned into my pillow. When I looked out, she was still giving me that sexually hungry look and wiggling that ass. Why do I even pretend that I can have a normal sex life? I found myself arriving late and changing in the elevator on the way to the Executive Services floor. The two women with me were a viewing gallery I could have done without.Since I put everything on display; remember; no underwear; one of my two fellow travelers felt permitted to rub her hands along my abs while I was pulling my pants on."Goddess, he's hard," she moaned to her companion. "Come, have a feel." I didn't protest. Technically, stripping naked in a public place could get me fired."His back is very nicely defined," the other side as she ran her hands over my back and shoulders. "What is it that you do?""I'm with Executive Services," I replied. "Right now I'm suborned to Product Testing. I teach monkeys to ride unicycles." Their confused looks humored me."Actually, I'm with ES and I'm a gopher; I pick up stuff," I grinned."Oh; you are that guy from the elevator; the kneeling man," the first woman exclaimed. "They said you were funny. Goddess, our man sure is hot, but he is so dull.""Let me guess; you are with the Financial Investigations Unit?" I said. Trent."Yes," she smiled. Orgy time. "He's just as good looking, but you are so much more fun. My sister can't wait for you to become available.""Sister?" I prodded."Daphne Pale," she smiled suggestively yet again. My face lit up."Daphne?" I caught the lady off-guard by hugging her. "I think Daphne is great," I stepped back. "She's really nice to me. She's smart, gives good advice and treats me like I'm something more than a walking, breathing annoyance. What's your name?""Brielle," she informed me."Beautiful name," I remarked, as I went back to dressing."Do they let you see other women; besides those of ES?" the second woman questioned."I don't see any Havenstone women for 79 more days," I stated. "Corporate policy. After that, all requests for hunting licenses are submitted to Desiree; non-lethal weaponry only until I develop more refined survival skills."Blink. Blink."You are joking, right?" Woman Two muttered."Nope. Katrina feels it will be a great third quarter kick-off. Let some women get out of the office for a weekend. Besides, I get to hunt those hunting me. I think it will be fun, don't you?" I hummed along."Desiree?" the second woman asked for clarification as she pulled out her phone. I nodded. The doors opened; my floor; so I stepped out and hustled to Katrina's office with only seconds to spare. The meeting was normal, right up until Dora adjusted my tie as we were exiting the office."Where did you dress? A closet with the lights out?" she teased."In the elevator on the way up," I confessed. "Daphne, I met your sister; Brielle," in case she had more than one. "She felt up my stomach and I made her laugh," I added."You let her touch you?" Tigger inquired."Cáel, did you come to work dressed like you normally do?" Daphne teased."Yep," sighed."So you were naked in the elevator," Violet snickered."Yep," I confirmed."You should be relocated for that," Fabiola sneered."Damn Fabiola, why do you; what would he be relocated for? Getting dressed?" Paula groaned."He was naked in front of an employee," Fabiola explained."Two actually," I clarified. "They both did touch my naked flesh. It was a bonding experience.""Did you do any actual 'bonding'?" Dora winked."I hugged Brielle, but that was only because she was Daphne's sister and I'm not allowed to hug Daphne at this time," I answered."You can hug me; in a purely platonic way," Daphne murmured. We were at Buffy's desk; I was working with her today."Okay," I nodded. I took a single stride to Daphne. She closed with me and I put my arms around her waist. Daphne put her hands on my shoulders. Our heads got closer and closer. I let my hands roam higher up her back and through her long locks.Nose touched nose, I ran my hands through her hair until I tickled the back of her ears. Daphne's lips parted and her tongue played along the edges. I let my breath play along her cheeks as I worked to her left ear. I felt a sharp pain in my right ass."Ow!" I squalled; after I pulled away from Daphne's ear.I tried to fully spin around, but Daphne wasn't letting go. I caught sight of a furious Buffy, small knife in hand, burning holes in me with her eyes.

Directed by Bryan Forbes and based on the novel by Ira Levin, this film delves into themes of feminism, identity, and the dark side of suburban conformity. The Stepford Wives follows Joanna Eberhart, played by Katharine Ross, who moves with her family from bustling New York City to the seemingly idyllic suburban community of Stepford, Connecticut. Joanna, a photographer and independent woman, soon becomes uneasy about the submissive and domestic behaviour of the other wives in town.As Joanna's discomfort grows, she befriends another newcomer, Bobbie Markowe, portrayed by Paula Prentiss. Together, they begin to investigate why the wives of Stepford seem so eerily perfect and compliant. Their investigation leads them to a chilling discovery about the men of Stepford and their disturbing vision of the “ideal” wife. The movie tackles themes of feminism and autonomy head-on, depicting a society that literally tries to manufacture the perfect wife, stripping women of their independence and individuality. It raises questions about gender roles and the extent to which societal pressures enforce conformity at the expense of personal freedom. The Stepford Wives is an excellent film for viewers interested in classic horror with a strong message. It's suitable for families with older teenagers, providing a springboard for discussions about individuality, societal expectations, and gender dynamics. It offers both thrills and an opportunity for insightful dialogue about the themes it portrays. Why It's a Must-Watch For fans of psychological thrillers, classic horror, or films that offer a critique of society, The Stepford Wives is a must-watch. Its combination of suspenseful storytelling, strong acting, and meaningful commentary ensures it remains relevant and impactful even decades after its release. So join us as we revisit the eerie perfection of Stepford and peel back the layers of one of cinema's most chilling tales about the quest for the “ideal” life. The Stepford Wives promises not only to entertain but also to provoke thought and discussion about the dark corners of societal norms.

"I asked myself, "Where would people never notice a town full of robots? Connecticut!" We watched the infamously camp remake of "The  Stepford Wives" directed by Frank Oz with our friend Chris Gallo (Golden Girls Posters). We might be scratching our heads about the actual plot of this adaptation of the 1972 Ira Levin novel, but at a brisk ninty minutes (not including credits) do we really care? This cast is more full of gay icons than the  Palm Springs Walk of Fame - powerhouse actresses like Bette Midler and Glenn Close absolutely knock these Paul Rudnick one-liners out of the park and they make just about any plot holes disappear. Nicole Kidman leads our cast as a disgraced TV exec exiled to Stepford Connecticut where the titular wives are a little too good to be true. Bette Midler is in top form playing an ultra liberal Stepford newbie getting into Scooby Gang shenanigans with Nic and Roger Bart as the gay soon to be "Stepford Husband". The would-be robotic antics of the wives are played for camp and Glenn Close is really killing it as the over the top alpha wife. The alleged script re-writes, on set clashes between actors and Oz and the general unevenness of the plot take their toll, but the women really carry this one and we could watch Glenn and Faith Hill Do-Si-Do with smoke coming out of their ears all day. Don't think too hard about this one - just let the microchips take over and enjoy the show.  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

Illeana Douglas is an avid student of the movies who grew up, stepped onto a set and entered the big screen of her childhood dreams. Her deep interest and knowledge of film legend and lore provided her with rich opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations with the stars and directors she has imagined meeting and then encountered along her way, including Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Marlon Brando, Martin Scorsese, Roddy McDowall and so many more. With a rare ability to manifest full circle moments, Illeana has  worked with the two men who upended her childhood, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Their film, Easy Rider had inspired her father to check out of suburbia and into a hippy commune, leaving the family financially destitute. That struggle is documented in her award winning book, I Blame Dennis Hopper. As a starving actress, Illeana went to work for a publicist in the Brill Building and years later, starred in Grace of My Heart, about songwriters in the Brill Building. Her fascination with her lost suburban childhood led her to write a new book called, Connecticut in the movies, WHILE she was restoring her own Connecticut dream home, a similar desperate effort to that of Mr. Blandings. Connecticut's role in American movies has evolved over the years from that of a metaphor for healthy, country living (Holiday Inn, Christmas In Connecticut) to a representation of our post-war suburban shift, the strain the work commute placed on marriages and the racism found in planned communities, (The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit, Gentleman's Agreement) to a depiction of dark suburbia and societal collapse (The Swimmer, The Ice Storm), to horror and dystopia. (The Stepford Wives, Let's Scare Jessica To Death.) Illeana, is a complete delight and she joins us for an in depth discussion about all things movie and many things Connecticut. In this episode of TruthSeekah is joined by Dee Wallace as they discuss UFO's, Aliens, E.T.'s, Spirituality and Healing. When it comes to the subject of UFOs, and Aliens who better than to discuss these topics with than “Mary” (Elliott's mom) from Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Dee Wallace? Over the years Dee Wallace has played in many alien and horror movies ranging from E.T., Critters, The Howling, The Hills Have Eyes, Cujo, Rob Zombie's Halloween, 3 From Hell, The House of the Devil, The Lords of Salem, The Lost, The Stepford Wives, Popcorn, The Frighteners and many more. I was surprised to find out that not only does Dee Wallace have a strong belief in UFO's and Aliens, but she also is a full time clairvoyant and energy healer. Dee works with clients on one on one helping them find true spiritual healing and working through emotional blockages. Dee travels the world speaking at conferences and hosting webinars offering her intuitive services. During the episode we talked about the duality behind a fascination with horror and healing as the two seem to be counterproductive together. Known as a “Scream-Queen” Dee sees the beauty and creativity in the horror genre that allows us to feel many different emotions watching movies in that genre. Dee says “People want to feel alive” and the horror genre allows us to do so. I also asked Dee about a conspiracy theory that I remembered hearing from some christian ufologist who said that Steven Spielberg has a collection of alien implants that were taken out of UFO abductees. Dee immediately shot down the notion calling it a conspiracy. We then went on to discuss the evil alien theories and agendas and talked about the fact that even the term abduction is something that seemed to die out in the 80's and 90's as most people refer to themselves as experiencers and contactees now.

[originally published on Patreon Dec 29, 2021] You're premium subscribers, you already know the score. Yes, Ira Levin and William Peter Blatty were both spies, but What Does It Mean? I go through the careers of both authors and flag the times they worked for US intelligence, then how perhaps their writing was affected by that fact, and then the reverberations their work has had on society. With Levin, we meet the Ayn Rand circle, Malachi Martin, the weirdness of Rosemary's Baby, the Stepford Wives, the Boys From Brazil, Son of Rosemary, and so on. With Blatty, we discuss USIA, the Groucho Marx connection, the Ninth Configuration, the Exorcist, Mark David Chapman, the Zodiac, the Exorcist III, Dahmer, and I cite the great pd187 and Christopher Knowles on the Exorcist film.  To wrap it up, I discuss the "less well-known" David St. John, who weirdly corresponds with Candy Jones, and how the saga of Tom Dooley III shows that religious psyops are not exactly new. And the songs are pretty great this episode too, lol.
