Dead things Come Alive!

StageFright (1987), The Church (1989), and Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) Most horror fans are at least familiar with the Italian horror tradition, even if they aren't deeply immersed in it. Directors like Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, and Joe D'Amato helped define one of the most prolific and influential horror movements in cinema history, producing a remarkable run of classic films over more than three decades. By the mid-1990s, however, that wave had largely collapsed. Yet, in the final stretch of that "era of terror," horror fans were given something special: four films from a young director named Michele Soavi. Soavi's path into directing was a gradual ascent through the industry. He began as an actor, which got him onto sets, then worked his way up through roles as a crew member and assistant director before eventually stepping behind the camera himself. Along the way, he trained under filmmakers like Joe D'Amato, Lucio Fulci, Lamberto Bava, and Dario Argento, experiences that helped him develop a distinctive voice of his own. In this episode, we're covering three of those four films, more than enough to make the case for seeking them out if you've never seen them, or revisiting them if it's been a while. Because sometimes, it's easy to forget just how damn good they really are. Choose to think on what is true, honorable, right, pure, wholesome, lovely, peaceful, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy—think on Jesus, center your mind on Him, and speak life by proclaiming who you are now: a new creation in Christ.

Bishop Robert Vona preaches from Ephesians 2:1–10, Ezekiel 37:1–14, and Romans 4:17, declaring that though we were dead in trespasses and sins, God has made us alive through Christ. Like Ezekiel's vision of the dry bones, the Spirit of God speaks life into dead places. Our words carry power, and when we speak the Word of the Lord, hope is restored, faith is strengthened, and dead things are revived. Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), Deathdream (1974), Black Christmas (1974) Director Bob Clark will probably always be remembered for his now classic holiday film, A Christmas Story (1983), released the same year as his previous film, Porky's, which is one of the raunchiest sex comedies of that era! But he started off making horror films, 3 of them in particular, before he moved on to making films in just about every other sub-genre. As you can imagine, it is these 3 horror films that we are going to discuss on this episode. One of them set many of the standards of what would be known as a slasher film, while the others have two very different take on zombies. All made on low to moderate budgets, but still are still so well made, it's a shame that Clark didn't continue on in the horror genre. Maybe that's why he's not remembered as much as names like Carpenter, Cronenberg, or Craven. And that's why we're discussing it now!
