Nineteen Seventy-Six. America's bicentennial was a great year for cinema, with films like A Star is Born, King Kong, All the President's Men, Carrie, and The Omen heating up the box office, and instant classics Rocky and Network earning the most accolades. After a six-decade career in the director's chair, Alfred Hitchcock released his last film, Family Plot, around the same time that an up-and-coming young director by the name of Martin Scorsese released his breakout hit, the fifth film of his budding career. Centered on a disillusioned New York cabbie played by Robert De Niro, this rain-and-neon-soaked meditation on summer in the city proved to be a defining outing by both actor and director. With a cast including Cybill Shephard, Albert Brooks, Peter Boyle, Harvey Keitel, and a very young Jodie Foster, the film racked up awards, including the Palme d'Or at Cannes and four nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for De Niro, and Best Supporting Actress for Foster. Despite controversies over its content, the film was hailed as a hit. Now, fifty years later, we're catching a ride with Taxi Driver and talking to you about it! Rebecca welcomes award-winning Canadian author Marcello Di Cintio for his third podcast visit to discuss his latest book, Precarious: The Lives of Migrant Workers, published by Biblioasis in September 2025. A Globe 100 Best Book of 2025 • One of The Hill Times' Top 100 Best Books in 2025 • Winner of the 2024 Dave Greber Freelance Writers Book Award https://www.biblioasis.com/shop/new-releases/precarious-the-lives-of-migrant-workers/ In 2023, after weeks of investigation, United Nations Special Rapporteur Tomoyo Obokata came to a scathing conclusion: Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker program is “a breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery.” Workers complained of excessive hours and unpaid overtime; of being forced to perform dangerous tasks or ones not specified in their contracts; of being physically abused, intimidated, and sexually harassed; and of overcrowded, unsanitary living conditions that deprived them of their privacy and dignity. In Precarious: The Lives of Migrant Workers, Marcello Di Cintio ranges across the country speaking to those who have come from elsewhere to till our fields, bathe our elderly, and serve us our Double Doubles, uncovering stories of tremendous perseverance, resilience, and humanity, but also of precarity and vulnerability. He shows that vast swathes of our economy depend on the work of people we don't see, while expanding our awareness of what migrant work now entails, and revealing that our mistreatment of the most vulnerable among us diminishes our own dignity. January kicks off with a defining entry in cinema history: Taxi DriverIn Episode 363 of Jay Movie Talk. I begin the Loners, Drifters, & Outsiders series by revisiting Martin Scorsese's haunting character study of isolation, alienation, and violence in post-Vietnam America. Fifty years later, Taxi Driver remains as unsettling, provocative, and conversation-worthy as ever. This episode dives deep into Travis Bickle as a character, the dangers of romanticizing loneliness, and how the film places us inside a fractured mindset rather than asking us to admire it. I discuss Scorsese's raw direction, Robert De Niro's career-defining performance, and why the film's ending still sparks debate decades later.I also explore how Taxi Driver has influenced modern cinema, why this archetype keeps resurfacing, and whether the film feels even more relevant today than it did in the 1970s .This isn't an easy watch, but it's an essential one. And it sets the tone for everything coming this month.

A rare sighting of The Brothers Wilson means it's time for another Hey, an Actor! And the podcast finally returns to a true Hollywood heavyweight as it scratches the surface of the illustrious career of the legendary Robert De Niro. In a triple-helping of collaborations with his directing soulmate Martin Scorsese, Ian and Pandy examine the poorly received King of Comedy, the career milestone of Taxi Driver, and the gangster paradise represented by Goodfellas, as chosen by the listeners. Along the way, discussion veers between dream sequence endings, Scorsese nepotism, Jim Bowen, and Pandy profiling a little-known pop culture figure known as The Joker. Also, which of the three featured films receives Pandy's special ire, Halloween-style?
Hollywood:1975. Martin Scorsese sits in his apartment, enraged. He wants to literally kill the man who is ruining his to-be-released film, Taxi Driver. Scorsese's friends, filmmakers Stephen Spielberg, Brian De Palma, John Milius, and Paul Schraeder rush to Scorsese's side to talk him out of committing murder, but when they arrive, their friend Marty acts less like himself and more like his Travis Bickle character from the film he's trying to save. This is the story of that night. Martin Scorsese is certainly one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Jake wants to know: who is your favorite filmmaker? After being nominated for an Academy Award for her role as a child prostitute in the 1976 film Taxi Driver, Jodi Foster gave up acting to go to college. It was there that her Oscar-nominated performance made her the target of a deranged stalker. That stalker, John Hinckley Jr., was obsessed with Jodie Foster. He wrote her letters and called her on the phone. He was convinced she needed to be saved and that he was the one to do it. And in 1981, in Washington, D.C., Jodie Foster was the unknowing inspiration for and motive behind Hinckley's attempted assassination of a sitting American President. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including stalking and suicide.
