Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver & Raging Bull are widely considered two of the best films of their era that were made in America. He and Robert DeNiro were a powerhouse creative team and they're still considered one of the all-time great collaborations in the history of the medium. This makes it curious that the film that they made together in between these monumental classics, 1977's New York, New York, has been largely forgotten and left out of the conversation. We're seeking to remedy that with our episode this week and we are happy to be joined by film enthusiast and historian Jim Hemphill. Jim has loved the film since he saw as a young film student and he brings some wonderful and personal insights to the discussion. In the episode we cover:Why directors and actors are often poor judges of their own workJim's early days in LA and getting to meet folks like Samuel Fuller, Billy Wilder, Budd Boetticher, and Blake EdwardsThe power of laserdiscs (and physical media in general) to develop and nurture generations of movie loversMarty's balance of strengths in having the talents of a classical studio director alongside the passions of an independent auteur The fact that NYNY may be Scorsese's only film (beyond his "faith trilogy") where the protagonist experiences genuine growthAnd more!Buy New York, New York Limited Edition Blu-RaySubstantive Cinema Episode ListJim's IndieWire article on NYNYBlu-ray Commentaries with Jim and his wife: The Golden Child and Navy SealsShoutouts:The Smashing MachineOne Battle After AnotherDexter: ResurrectionFollow Jim:InstagramIndieWireFollow Us:InstagramThreadsPhilip's LetterboxdBlueSkyShare Your Questions/Suggestions/Feedback With Us:Email: thesubstancepod@gmail.comDM on InstagramSupport Us: Support the show with an individual donation on CashApp to $TheSubstancePod or become a monthly Patreon supporter at patreon.com/TheSubstancePod
New York, la nuit. Tout le monde connaît New York New York.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveToday's guest is Geoff Shullenberger, the managing editor of Compact and a writer whose articles and reviews have appeared in American Affairs, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The New Atlantis, UnHerd, and more. Last week, after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Geoff wrote an incisive piece titled, “The Return of the Assassin.” In it, he observes that the nature of violence has shifted in recent years, away from the mass shooting and towards the targeted political assassination. Why this is the case, and what it bodes for the future, is the subject of this week's podcast. The conversation provides historical perspective by comparing contemporary political (or quasi-political) violence to radical groups from the 1960s and 1970s like the Baader Meinhof group, the Red Brigades, the Black Panthers, and figures like Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver. Shadi Hamid distinguishes between left-wing violence (utopian, seeking new systems) and right-wing violence (preservationist, maintaining hierarchies). Geoff challenges this framework, noting that recent shooter profiles don't fit neatly into these categories. Damir Marusic notes that human beings always want events to “mean” something, but it may very well be that all this violence is essentially senseless. In our bonus section for paid subscribers, the guys discusses Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver; Geoff explains why he doesn't think we are on the brink of civil war; was the Charlie Kirk assassination an “honor killing”?; was January 6 a “mobilization”?; what Trump does next; were we living under a liberal dictatorship in 2020?; Damir on “the rotten Democratic Party”; Shadi says: “Nobody is blameless, but that doesn't mean everyone is equally to blame”; and more!Required Reading and Viewing:* Geoff Shullenberger, “The Return of the Assassin" (Compact).* Geoff Shullenberger, “Popular Justice” (The Point).* Tom Wolfe, “Radical Chic” (New York).* Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish (Amazon).* Martin Scorsese, Taxi Driver (IMDB). * Oliver Stone, JFK (IMDB).* Oliver Stone, Talk Radio (IMDB).* Eric Bogosian, Talk Radio (Amazon).* La Verkin City, Utah, United Nations-Free Zone Ordinance.* Punk rock picture of Oswald and Ruby.Free Preview Video:Full video for paid subscribers below:

Meet the Parents (2000) is one of the most iconic comedy films of the early 2000s, directed by Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Trumbo) and starring Ben Stiller (Zoolander, Tropic Thunder) as Greg Focker, a nervous male nurse who is about to propose to his girlfriend Pam Byrnes (Teri Polo – The West Wing, The Fosters). His plans, however, go hilariously awry when he must first win the approval of her intimidating father, Jack Byrnes, played by the legendary Robert De Niro (Goodfellas, Taxi Driver). Before Sir Alec Guinness was Obi-Wan Kenobi, he adapted Joyce Cary's book The Horse's Mouth into the 1958 movie. In addition to writing the screenplay, Guinness starred as Gulley Jimson, an artist who is dedicated but snide, talented but demanding, endearing but dishonest. Jimson charms and delights, and nothing will get in the way of his vision. Even worse, he leaves havoc in his wake. Roymieco Carter, who's Associate Professor and Director of the Visual Arts Program at North Carolina A&T State University, discovered the movie when he was a student at Virginia Commonwealth University, and it made a big impact. Carter explains why The Horse's Mouth impacted him at such an early age, and why asking for permission to be an artist or designer isn't necessary, if you want to be something, be it.-Associate Professor and Director of the Visual Arts Program at North Carolina A&T State University, Roymieco Carter teaches graphic design, digital media, visual literacy and theory, and social criticism. Carter has written articles on graphic design education, art education, gaming, human computer interaction, and graphics computer animation. Having studied and worked in fashion art, as well as design and advertising practices, he often draws from his graphic design background for inspiration. His work uses a mixture of digital and hand techniques including collage, calligraphy, drawing, xerography, stenciling and typography. Raised in the tobacco farmlands of Virginia, he draws inspiration from his rural upbringing, and integrates themes of violence, displacement, and oppression into his work, exploring how history is manipulated and rewritten. Holding a BFA in Art and Advertising from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Graphic Design from Penn State University, Carter's work fuses documented history with cultural narratives and folklore, evoking deep emotional and personal insights.https://cartergallery.wordpress.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/roymieco-carter-65a38827/ https://www.ncat.edu/employee-bio.php?directoryID=909381433 https://www.ganttcenter.org/calendar/open-air-steven-cozart-and-roymieco-carter/ -The Horse's Mouth (1958)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051739/https://www.tcm.com/video/223317/horses-mouth-the-1958-the-old-dreadnought -Further Readinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihaly_Csikszentmihalyi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Church_in_the_Wild https://www.museepicassoparis.fr/en/picassos-childhood -Thirtysomething (1987-1991)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirtysomethinghttps://designobserver.com/i-was-a-mad-man/ https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2001/05/miles-drentell-r-i-p.html https://som.yale.edu/blog/memoriam-bill-drenttel-Other movies and shows discussed, alphabetical listSinners (2025)Taxi Driver (1976)
Forty-years ago, Oscar-winning master Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Killers of the Flower Moon) directed his second dark comedy in a row (after The King of Comedy) with this quirky New York story which takes place almost entirely during one crazy night. The whole story centers on Paul played by Griffing Dunne (An American Werewolf in London, My Girl, Dallas Buyers Club) who's just a lowly word processor by day but late one night, he decides to meet up with a mysterious, beautiful woman named Marcy (Rosanna Arquette) in the Soho district. When he arrives at her apartment, she's at first not there so he ecounters her very strange, forward roommate (Linda Fiorentino)....eventually some one dies....and things just get stranger from there as Paul finds himself trapped in this ONE part of Manhattan unable to find his way home. The stacked cast for this cult classic also includes Teri Garr, Catherine O'Hara, Will Patton, John Heard, Cheech Marin, and Tommy Chong. Gather your bolt pistols and money satchels, friend-os! Andrew's pick for the film that made him a cinephile is the Coen Brothers' violent noir/western No Country for Old Men. He and Joshua partake in a ramble about evil, age, philosophy, movie tattoos, and most importantly, which one of them lost the most out of a coin toss (spoiler: it was Andrew). And then stayed tuned as they bring up One More Thing, going into the apocalyptic zoo novel The Island of Lost Things by Emma Sloley and the latest Big Thief album Double Infinity. Next week, special guest and The Take-Up contributor Cliff Froelich guides the hosts out of the west and into the dark, scuzzy streets of 70s New York with Taxi Driver, the classic Scorsese thriller that led to Froelich's own cinematic awakening. Back in August, while on vacation, Westchester talk radio host Andrew Castellano visited one of his favorite destinations: Block Island. Known for its natural beauty and classic New England charm, the island offers plenty to explore, but one local favorite truly stands out: Aldo's Bakery. A Block Island tradition since 1970, Aldo's serves timeless baked goods in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Aldo's dedication to fresh, homemade offerings goes beyond breads, pastries, and ice cream. Visitors can also enjoy healthier options like açai bowls, fresh fruit smoothies, avocado toast, and other nutritious treats. And no visit is complete without Del's Lemonade, or something from Aldo's pastry boat, bringing the bakery experience right to your own boat (listen for the Andiamo!). Tune in as Andrew Castellano speaks with Michael Mederios, a longtime Block Island taxi driver, about island life, local favorites, and more.

Forty days to an assassination. We dive into Woo Min-ho's icy political thriller The Man Standing Next — a gripping, true-events drama about KCIA director Kim Gyu-pyeong (played by Squid Game's Front Man, Lee Byung-hun) as he weighs loyalty, country, and a bullet. What the film's aboutAfter years in President Park Chung-hee's inner circle, Kim watches the regime harden: political purges, wiretaps, street crackdowns, and a rival enforcer (Chief Kwak) pushing for blood. When a former KCIA boss defects to the U.S. and threatens to publish a tell-all, the fuse is lit. The film tracks the 40 tense days that culminate in one of South Korea's most consequential nights. What we get into on the podPower, paranoia, and proximity: what it costs to be “the man standing next” to a dictator. The Washington angle: congressional testimony, ambassadors pulling strings, and how U.S. pressure shapes the endgame. That dinner sequence: whisky, insults, and a single decision that changes a nation.History vs. thriller: how the movie compresses real events without losing the knot-in-the-stomach tension.Performances & craft: Lee Byung-hun's controlled implosion, swaggering Kwak, crisp night photography (you can actually see it!), and the score's slow dread. The big themes: loyalty vs. survival, “order” vs. democracy, and why authoritarian systems eventually eat their own.Plus, our usual chaosA delightfully deranged Top 5 mash-up: Cowboys and Waiting Rooms (yes, really).A lightning-round quiz: “Korea or Career?” (parasites, broadcasters, pig-based corporate malfeasance — you had to be there).Should you watch the film first? We do reveal key plot points (including the ending), so if you want the full cinematic punch, watch first. If you're here for big ideas, sharp takes, and a few belly laughs, jump straight in.Why hit playIf you loved Parasite, A Taxi Driver, or political thrillers with teeth (Z, Zero Dark Thirty), this episode is squarely in your lane — part history lesson, part moral knot, all energy.

Tim Gallin began his quest to perform in feature films and TV after attending CW Post College on Long Island, NY. His first professional job came by way of the Gong Show in August of 1978. He was a contestant on an Elvis Presley special because Chuck Barris was a fan of The King. After seeing his old high school football coach, Vic Magnotta performing in Taxi Driver, Tim picked up the phone and gave him a call. Magnotta was a stuntman, retired special forces soldier, and Vietnam veteran who became close friends with Martin Scorsese while attending NYU. That fateful phone call created for Tim an opportunity to play football in the film The Wanderers. Through Magnotta's continued offers to perform stunts, Tim met many of the people he would collaborate with over the next 45+ years. When asked about a favorite fight scene he performed in, the Marked for Death fight from the classic film F/X (1986) was Tim's immediate response – and is the starting point of this interview that covers some of Tim's epic experiences in the industry including stunt doubling Tom hanks on Splash and Steve Martin on Only Murders in the Building.
Supreme Court judges, bus conductors, chemists, even radio stars — in this episode, we look at how women were making their mark in 1960s Taiwan. Our source is a 1963 issue of the Free China Review, published in the peak “Free China” years, when most of the so‑called “Taiwanese” women featured were actually from China. Still, even in this repressive period, you could argue women here had more chances to lead, earn, and succeed than many of their peers in the West.DO US A FAVOR and leave a review or comment (on Apple, Spotify, YT, or our website). It really helps. Thanks.

Arrivederci! Rocket Beans wird unterstützt von fritz-kola. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Phillip and Eric are kicking off the first part of their discussion on the Image comic series Kill or Be Killed by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. They discuss its deconstruction of the vigilante hero, its parallels to stories like Taxi Driver and Joker and its roots to the socioeconomic circumstances of its times, and how if Phil would still support Zohran Mamdani if he outlawed Spider-Man and taxed Doctor Strange.

On this episode of the JT Sports Podcast, JT breaks down why Jalen Hurts is everything wrong with how we talk about quarterbacks. From "Taxi Driver" comps to ring culture bias, JT calls out the lazy narratives that keep holding elite QBs back. Then he explains why the Cowboys aren't done yet—even with Schottenheimer coaching, this roster is too loaded to fall flat again. JT also lays out Jim Harbaugh's gritty blueprint to run the AFC West and which NFL head coaches are one bad season from unemployment. Plus: why the Jaguars still ain't built for Houston and why kickers deserve way more respect. One take in here might just flip your whole view of QB discourse—listen in.
