For our second episode in the "Corman Graduates: Jack Hill" series, we talk with director, writer and cinematography, Elle Schneider (THE FOOD THAT BUILT AMERICA, PLEDGE NIGHT: AN INTERVIEW WITH ROGER CORMAN, BLISS BLUE, THAT GUY DICK MILLER), about Jack Hill's MONDO KEYHOLE and PIT STOP. In addition to being friends with Dick Miller and interviewing Jack Hill and Roger Corman on multiple occasions, she is a huge fan of PIT STOP. She brings an technical perspective on both of the films that you won't find anywhere else. First, we talk about MONDO KEYHOLE. We discuss the history and legal challenges with making "Nudie Cuties" and "Roughies" films during the 1960s and how that impacted the distribution of MONDO KEYHOLE. We talk about how Jack Hill got involved with movie, the unique approach he took to casting and filming the movie and the fact that it had to play in adult theaters upon it's initial release. Next, we dive into fan favorite, PIT STOP - one of Jack Hill's most impressive films. We talk about the struggle the movie faced trying to get an audience in an era when black and white films were going out of vogue in the drive-in circuit. We share mutual appreciation for Sid Haig's emotional performance - one that is unique to his filmography. Finally, we discuss the filming approach by cinematographer, Austin McKinney and the unfortunate rift with Jack Hill. We even talk a tiny bit about Sorceress. Elle shares stories about Roger Corman including his ambitions to be a studio director and the decision to step away to start New World Pictures. We also spend a little time talking about serial killers, the fallout between Jack Hill and Austin McKinney, and movies with the best scenes featuring Dune Buggies. Why Dune Buggies? Because Dune Buggies are awesome. We want to generously thank Elle for being on the podcast and sharing her perspectives on these films. You can check out her website at http://elleschneider.com and look for her next documentary about educational films. Maybe she'll cover For Safety's Sake: In the Neighborhood? Probably not. *From the desk of Pete* Once thought to be "Lost Media," Spider Baby has thankfully been rediscovered and given a proper Blue Ray release by Arrow. The last film of legendary genre actor Lon Chaney Jr. puts out a powerful performance in this ominous, horrifying rendition of an "Old Dark House" film and Sid Haig flexes his acting chops without ever saying a word. Charlie blew Pete and Anna's mind when he suggested that Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses is a spiritual remake and the more they talked about it the more they agreed. This one's in the public domain so it's easy to find and the entire cast suggests you spend the 80 minutes to experience a true cult film.

We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in. Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. To buy some of Calum's books (which we highly suggest you do), head here: https://edinburghuniversitypress.com/calum-waddell_1660/. Listen up, #PrisonMarch is back this week for more of Prison MarcH 2: Second Offense! This week's women-in-prison movie released by New World Pictures is 1972's THE BIG BIRD CAGE written and directed by Jack Hill and starring NWPP favorites Pam Grier, Sid Haig, and Vic Diaz. Returning again for the fifth time to dish out her thoughts on this flick is the fantastic Ali Davis! You may remember Ali from one of her four previous episodes with the New World Pictures Podcast such as COVER GIRL MODELS, GODZILLA 1985, TEH FUNNY FARM, and UP FROM THE DEPTHS. THE BIG BIRD CAGE serves time as a non-sequel follow up to THE BIG DOLL HOUSE, only this time with significantly less Lambanog! This time around, Hill delivers on everything you might expect from a film like this given the title, plus a plan to free the inmates of a local women's prison so they can offer companionship to some local rebels! It's the women-in-prison and revolution crossover you've been waiting for, unless you've been waiting for one with lots of birds in it! In that case, you might be in for a surprise! In this episode we will discuss the musical stylings of Pam and Sid on and off screen, the durability of a bamboo Prison, and, most importantly, the team bravely attempts to crunch the numbers on a titty count in this over the top episode you won't want to miss! An old but a goodie starring our main man Sid Haig!
We knew this day was coming, but it's the FINAL EPISODE of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO VIC DIAZ?, our glorious deep-dive into the film career of "the Filipino Peter Lorre" Vic Diaz which was one of our first ever podcasts under the Cinema Smorgasbord banner. It's been a fine few years, and what better way to round things out than with an all-timer exploitation classic starring Pam Grier and Margaret Markov as two women chained together and making their way through a peril-filled "South American" jungle. Add in a truly demented Sid Haig performance and you've got a recipe for (filthy) fun. And of course we have a tremendous Vic Diaz performance as the sleazy drug dealer Victor "Vic" Cheng! Let's end this thing with a bang! The post Episode 260 – Whatever Happened to Vic Diaz? – Black Mama, White Mama (1973) (THE FINALE!) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

This week's pick is the 1974 action-ish movie Savage Sisters. Three women of three races join forces to get one million dollars from, and revenge on, a double-crossing Revolutionary. It is kind of like a wacky caper with bad acting, bad fight scenes, and Sid Haig's over-the-top stereotyping of Mexicans.
It's great to have an old friend on the show — and this week we've got Jonny Polonsky. Lucky you. This is a great episode where we talk to the great singer-songwriter-studio rat about moving to and prospering in LA, growing up as a backstage-teenaged Chicago presence, bossing around Rick Rubin, Mark Lanegan, playing on a Neil Diamond session, being Frank Black's boy, Chris Cornell & Dio, Gabe as Sid Haig, and Jonny's great new record that comes out June 7 on Loosegroove records.
Ryan McCurdy (of the Ranked Podcast) is back to wrap up Rob Zombie's unplanned trilogy with “3 From Hell.” This was arguably the movie with the most positive reviews of Zombie's career. Episode #96 of MY HAUNTED HEAD (originally recorded as Episode #63) has apparently been collecting dust down in the vault for the past year or so. So we've dusted it off, and now bring you this extensive, (mostly) unedited walk down memory lane as Toddzilla and Matthew discuss all of the incredible film heroes whom we've met at conventions, and who are unfortunately no longer with us. Included are meetings with Stuart Gordon, David Hess, Gunnar Hansen, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Ted White, John Saxon and many more. Lots of great memories, and a few laughs along the way. Listen now on your favorite podcast app. RATE, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE!
When I record a podcast, the majority of the time, I'll have the mics on and I'll chat with my guests for awhile about anything. I like to do this to loosen them up, feel at home and generally welcomed. Being on a podcast can be nerve racking and the last thing you want to do is sound stupid or come off in the wrong light. So, what I have here is a compilation of clips from various guests that have come over and we talked. Not always about movies, but overall it was fun and interesting to re-listen to some of these forgotten gems.
Subscriber-only episodeCamp counselors Jackie and Greg talk about Jack Hill's COFFY from 1973. Since seeing the advertisement for this flick in the late 90's, I've always loved it! The ultimate throwback horror film for horror nerds. Jessica (from the “Ghosts of Appalachia” Halloween special) joins me to talk about one of the most memorable movies that kicked off Rob Zombie's other career. We both did a lot of research and had a blast chatting about one of the grimiest, dirtiest violent flicks to hit 2003.If you're not doing so already, check out Classic American Movies on Facebook and Instagram. I do appreciation posts, free movie giveaways and more!

Comedians Amamah Sardar & Asad Benbow join Zac this week for an enjoyably spooky and gooey movie from the early 1980's. Giving a start to some later greats like Robert Englund and Sid Haig, this low budget delivers as a space crew faces their worst fear one by one: themselves. On Episode 137 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of Jason of Star Command! This was one of the few live-action Filmation shows which aired on Saturday mornings for kids from 1978 thru 1980. It was the sequel series to Space Academy (another Filmation show). Assisting Curtis in this endeavor is the lead actor who portrayed Jason himself; CRAIG LITTLER! Craig and Curtis had a wonderful behind the scenes discussion about Jason of Star Command; topics include working with James Doohan and Sid Haig, as well as how this show was much better than its predecessor. Craig also shares other key points of his very successful career (including his epic role in the Grey Poupon Mustard commercial, and his stint as the Gorton's Fisherman). If you'd like to watch all of Jason of Star Command, you may do so via this playlist on YouTube. Additionally, check out this great exhaustive reel of all Craig's commercial work (which also includes a few TV show appearances). PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Stephen Scarlata (BEYOND THE GATES, JODOROWSKY'S DUNE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope studio to discuss his career journey. From Stephen's start working for the legendary Roger Corman back in the 90's… to working almost every position and in every facet of production over the next three decades… to writing and producing 2016's fantastic BEYOND THE GATES…to the making of his new documentary (and directorial debut) SHARKSPLOITATION (now streaming on Shudder)… Stephen and the boys take a deep dive (pun intended) into the process of making a great documentary. The group also discusses the craft of finding and building the best narrative story arc out of hours and hours (and hours) of interview footage, Stephen explains why a good lawyer makes all of the difference when it comes to licensing clips from movies and TV series both bog and small, and the boys rank the films of the JAWS franchise from their favorite to their not-so-favorite.
