A vampire with impossibly long fingers, three American students in Romania, and finger-demons that moonwalk across the screen - welcome to the bizarre world of "Subspecies" (1991), a film that somehow earned an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite being what we collectively agreed was a spectacular failure.Diving deep into this peculiar vampire tale, we unpack the story of Radu, a drooling vampire who murders his father for the mysterious "Bloodstone" - a relic that continuously bleeds the blood of saints without any explanation whatsoever. When his fingers get severed, they transform into tiny demonic minions (the actual "subspecies" from the title) through some of the most questionable stop-motion effects ever committed to film. What makes "Subspecies" fascinating beyond its obvious shortcomings is its historical significance as the first American film shot in Romania following the fall of communism. The authentic Romanian locations, architecture, and cultural elements shine through, making us wonder what could have been had the production values matched the atmospheric setting. The traditional festival masks, crafted by local artisans drawing on Romanian folklore, stand out as one of the few elements that genuinely impressed us.Between vampire brothers who look nothing alike, a romantic subplot that awkwardly invokes mother-son dynamics, and endless scenes of characters walking or driving while dramatic music plays, "Subspecies" represents a particular moment in horror cinema that's simultaneously terrible and strangely compelling. Whether you're a die-hard vampire enthusiast or someone who enjoys horror films that missed the mark so spectacularly they circle back to being entertaining, our breakdown of Subspecies offers insights, laughs, and a thorough assessment of why some critically-acclaimed horror films of yesteryear may not hold up to modern scrutiny. Perhaps the crowning achievement of the entire Moonbeam universe, Ted Nicolaou's DRAGONWORLD is as close to a legit blockbuster as Full Moon gets. It's that time of year again, the time that our faithful heroes Jef, Josh and Brian put their lives on the line to celebrate "GNARVEMBER"! The time of year to choose a film that fully emcompasses both hard rock and horror! This time around the FM3 find themselves elbow deep once again in a Full Moon Production, Produced by good old Chuck band and directed by his accomplice Ted Nicolaou. On paper this movie screams "GNARVEMBER", however in execution there might be some debate as to how much this movie actually shreds. Do yourself a favor, hit play and get ready for a spirited chat about this year's hard rock hullabaloo 1992's "Bad Channels"!
It may have taken two recordings, but we got it done! Join us, as Mathias the Ill and Mr. Ree take a [few] crack(s) at 1992's Bad Channels. This fun one was directed by Ted Nicolaou, and co-written by Charles Band (Full Moon Features) and Jack Canson. Staring Robert Factor, Martha Quinn (original MTV VeeJay), and Aaron Lusting. With musical score by the one and only Blue Oyster Cult, with additional music by: Joker, Fair Game, Sykotik Sinfoney, and DMT.
The post #231 – Subspeciesalisterna appeared first on FromBeyond.se.

On our show, "Howling At The Full Moon", we're going with something a little more recent with our 33rd episode and deep diving into one of the coolest looking feature films ever with the 2021 effort "DON'T LET HER IN" directed by Ted Nicolaou (the Subspecies franchise) and starring Kelly Curran, Lorin Doctor, Cole Penderey and Austin James Parker. Don't Let Her In is a cautionary tale of what happens when you rent a room to a mysterious stranger that may not be all that she seems. This shorty feature (clocking in at only 61 minutes) is a touch of Rosemary's Baby, a dash of Demon Knight, and a whole lot of Gothic horror awesomeness. Discussion headed off by our regular hosts Cameron Scott and Full Moon enthusiast Dustin Hubbard as they take a deep dive into a dissection of this Gothic horror romp.

Ted started out as a sound recordist on Tobe Hooper’s cult classic THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE and then went into editing, working on films like ROAR, TRANCERS and GHOULIES. As a director, and ofentimes as a writer, too, he made films like the offbeat horror comedy TERRORVISION, charming fantasy movies for children like DRAGONWORLD or LEAPIN’ LEPRECHAUNS, and, of course, the aforementioned SUBSPECIES films – a series of vampire horror films which made perfect use of their impressive Romanian… The post #34: “It's very easy for me to scare myself”: Director Ted Nicolaou on THE ST. Directed by Steve Barron, the movie revolves around Beldar (Dan Aykroyd) and Prymaat (Jane Curtin), two extraterrestrial beings known as Coneheads who crash-land on Earth. Adapted from the iconic SNL characters, the film masterfully combines humor, wit, and a heartwarming story. As Beldar and Prymaat struggle to fit into the human world, they adopt the surname "Conehead" and attempt to lead a typical American life in suburban New Jersey. With their distinctive cone-shaped heads, they garner attention and curiosity from those around them. However, their peculiar behaviors, M-shaped "removable" teeth, and the challenges of adapting to human customs make for uproarious situations. The movie takes a comedic turn when the couple's daughter, Connie (played by Michelle Burke), is born with a perfectly shaped human head. As the Conehead family finds themselves in danger of being discovered by the Men in Black-like agency, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, they must confront their own conceptions of identity and protect their daughter from an uncertain fate. With its hilarious moments, tongue-in-cheek commentary on immigration, and spot-on performances by Aykroyd, Curtin, and a talented ensemble cast, "Coneheads" remains a cult classic. The film manages to be both absurdly funny and charmingly relatable, reminding us of the importance of embracing our differences and finding a sense of belonging, no matter our origin.More on BAD CHANNELS (1992):In the wacky world of B-movies, "Bad Channels" holds a unique place as a 1992 sci-fi horror musical that defies all expectations. Directed by infamous B-movie maestros, Ted Nicolaou and Charles Band, this cult classic takes viewers on a mind-bending journey into an otherworldly television station where chaotic madness unfolds. The film revolves around a demented alien broadcaster named Vernon Locknut, who possesses the ability to abduct and control human's minds through their television screens. When a small town's radio station, KDUL, is purchased by the mysterious Channels Unlimited, things take a wild turn. Vernon Locknut and his mischievous minions hijack the airwaves, turning the channel into a portal for abductions. As the townspeople become entranced and drawn into their televisions, it's up to a resourceful DJ named Dan O'Dare, the station's program manager, and an eccentric tabloid reporter, Lisa Cummings, to put a stop to the mind-control madness."Bad Channels" immerses viewers in a bizarre blend of genres. Welcome to the final episode of Subspecies Week on Kevin Lane's Spill Your Guts! After 25 years, Subspecies is back with “Subspecies 5: Blood Rise”. A prequel to the events of the original series, the film brings us back in time to show how Radu Vladislas became the monster we know and love. I won't ruin any of the films many surprises but I will say that it's an incredible accomplishment for Ted Nicolaou and Full Moon. Anders Hove, Denice Duff and Kevin Spirtas are all back and seeing them step into the world of Subspecies again after all these years is as exciting as any fan could have hoped. The film is also a perfect starting point for folks who are new to the series because, well, it's a prequel. Set some time aside though because after you see it you will feel you must see the rest of the films immediately. And boy are you lucky! “Subspecies 5: Blood Rise” played earlier this month at Alamo Drafthouse theaters and will be having its steaming premiere on Full Moon Streaming and Screambox on June 2nd. Without further delay, joining me to look at the return of this beloved series are writer/director Ted Nicolaou and stars Denice Duff, Kevin Spirtas and Anders Hove. Welcome to Subspecies Week on Kevin Lane's Spill Your Guts!A new episode every day until Thursday, June 1st exploring Ted Nicolaou's iconic saga with the creator and stars. Our guest today is the not only the writer and director of the Subspecies series but also one of the genres greatest gonzo filmmakers. He has an extensive history in the genre beginning as the location sound recordist on Tobe Hooper's seminal classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and an editor for longtime creative collaborator Charles Band on Empire and Full Moon classics like “Tourist Trap”, “Ghoulies”, “Trancers”, Stuart Gordon's “Robot Jox” and “Crash and Burn”. In 1986 he wrote and directed the whacky and entirely fun cult classic “TerrorVision” and it was clear to Charles Band that he had found himself a real deal genre maestro. That filmmaker was Ted Nicolaou and his next film after “TerrorVision” was the original “Subspecies”. As Ted tells it, the original “Subspecies” shoot in Romania was more or less a nightmare. Ted would once again prove his vision and endurance when not only did he survive the ordeal that was shooting the film, he created one of Full Moon's biggest hits. The rest is Subspecies history and we're going to uncover all of it here. From the original film to the back to back shot sequels filmed in 1993 when Full Moon was shining it's brightest to the 4th film for a transitioning and somewhat troubled Full Moon to fan favorite spin off “Vampire Journals”, Ted is the creative vision behind it all. Spill your guts is proud to present a conversation with the man behind the bloodstone, Ted Nicolaou. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Welcome to Subspecies Week on Kevin Lane's Spill Your Guts!A new episode every day until Thursday, June 1st exploring Ted Nicolaou's iconic saga with the creator and stars. There's a lot about “Subspecies” to admire from Nicolaou's assured direction to the stunning location shooting in Romania and the rock-solid performances from Denice Duff and Kevin Spirtas as the heroes but the star of the show is unquestionably the series antagonist, Radu. A centuries old vampire, Radu is grotesque and vile, usually gore dripping from his fanged maw while he speaks in a rasping, decrepit voice. This is not the romantic vampire of Hammer films but a force of evil that will stop at nothing to reclaim his birthright, the bloodstone. He has become a monster favourite. Radu is played by Anders Hove. A Danish actor, Ander's deftly manages the balance of keeping Radu sinister and menacing but also imbues the character with an unexpected empathy and a haunting past. It's a truly remarkable transformation when you find that Anders himself is a lowkey, kind, thoughtful man.Originally a season 1 release, we are presenting this interview again here as part of our Subspecies Week lineup. If you've heard it before, listening to it again as part of the complete narrative that is being presented this week offers new insights. For those who are listening for the first time, strap in because Anders is one of a kind in absolutely the best way imaginable.Without further delay my fledglings, let there be a bloodbath with Anders Hove. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Welcome to Subspecies Week on Kevin Lane's Spill Your Guts!A new episode every day until Thursday, June 1st exploring Ted Nicolaou's iconic saga with the creator and stars. In a series packed with nightmare fuel vampires and their proteges and little demons birthed from severed fingers, our guest today brings the much-needed humanity to the series. In this episode we're sitting down with Kevin Spirtas. First appearing in “Bloodstone: Subspecies 2” and “Bloodlust: Subspecies 3” as Mel Thompson of the US Embassy, Kevin takes what could be an entirely reactionary character and give him real weight. As one of the few major not undead humans in the series, it's a character that helps to ground the supernatural elements and give the audience an access point for Michelle and her sister Rebecca's story. Kevin has an extensive background in horror having starred in films like “The Hills have eyes part 2” for director Wes Craven and “Friday the 13th Part 7: The New Blood”. Oh, and keep an eye out for Kevin in a decidedly different role in “Subspecies 5”. He's a long way from Embassy Mel this time around! Spill Your Guts is proud to present, a debriefing with the Kevin Spirtas! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Welcome to Subspecies Week on Kevin Lane's Spill Your Guts!A new episode every day until Thursday, June 1st exploring Ted Nicolaou's iconic saga with the creator and stars. Our guest today is the heart and soul of the “Subspecies” series. The Beauty to the beast (though she's got fangs!). With a villain as savage, endlessly quotable and tortured as Anders Hove's Radu, it would seem a difficult task to create a heroine just as memorable but the character Michelle is exactly that. For this episode we are joined by Denice Duff. Though Denice was brought into the series on the second film “Bloodstone: Subspecies 2” to replace the original actor who portrayed Michelle, she quickly made the role her own and brought new depth and ferocity. It's hard to imagine anyone but Denice playing Michelle. And that is often a true testament to a great performance. Denice's characters battle for her soul against an always pursuing Radu is the backbone of the entire franchise and the onscreen chemistry between Denice and Anders Hove is a big part of why we can't get enough. There's a scene you will hear us discuss with a few of our guests that takes place in “Bloodlust: Subspecies 3” when Radu and Michelle are standing on the wall of the castle just before sunrise. It's a quiet intimate scene of devastating anguish, regret and loss. It's heartbreaking and beautiful both in its writing and the performances. And Denice is just astonishing in it. So, let's learn how to survive the night with Subspecies star Denice Duff. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

You've seen Annabelle and the Conjuring movies, but have you seen the Indonesian creepy doll trilogy that's obviously set in the same universe? In this forbidden, shadowy episode of Tubi or Not Tubi, we summon the spirit of vengeance in the 1999 film, Ragdoll, directed by Ted Nicolaou. This is the part where I often insert a quizzical paragraph about the content you are about to experience, but I too fear the wrath of Woman Detective, and you should too.

In this episode, the Halloween celebration continues as Michael launches us into another horror comedy taking us just one year earlier to 1986 with Ted Nicolaou's TerrorVision. This sci-fi tinged goofball comedy brings a lot of love for the classic monster movie while eagerly lampooning life in the 80s. The whole gang takes to the field defending this one while we ponder what people are smoking to allow this gem to sit with a 0% critic score on RottenTomatoes. But before that, Dustin finally gets the chance to bleed his heart out of all his love for Full Moon Features and its revolving cast of collaborators. Also, Jason and Dustin refuse to miss the chance to plug Phantom of the Paradise one more time. And so much more! We made it 100 episodes so we decided to treat ourselves to one of our shared favorites! Terrorvision!!! Plus, I had talked to writer / director Ted Nicolaou a few months earlier for the magazine and had a little audio snippet of him talking about the movie, so I dropped that in too. (I hadn't listened to it before we recorded so we rehash a bit of what he says.) When LA's most eighties family installs their new DIY 100 satellite, they accidentally pick up the essence of a mutated family space pet known as the Hungry Beast. These dingdongs are too obsessed with the newest Noodles video to care that they're getting picked off one-by-one, and go about their swinging, survivalist training, and in the case of the sister, I guess...dating King Vidiot from Joysticks? Either way, it all adds up to one of the most incredible pieces of surreal eighties film you'll ever see. So join Matt and Tristan as they enter the Ouzo flavored pleasure dome known as, Terrorvision!
Credete agli UFO e agli extraterrestri?
For the first episode of 2021, we're joined by horror legend Ted Nicolaou Director of Subspecies and many other Full Moon classics. Everybody's favorite drooling Dracula, Radu is back and this time he's brought his mom! Radu continues his reign as filmdom's brattiest vampire. He skulks around his dad's house being surly to visitors. He runs to his mom when a girl won't hang out with him. And all he really wants to do is hang around his dad's house rent free, playing with his Bloodstone. Honestly...sounds pretty great. We start out the podcast with Matt being an unbeliever in the beauty of Subspecies, only to win him over to the side of goodness and sanity when he finally realizes that these movies rule. In the 1980s, teen comedies established character tropes and found their future superstars. BETTER OFF DEAD... (1985) catapulted John Cusack to leading man status, even if the film didn’t reach blockbuster heights. This satirical black comedy was an unapologetic, absurdist dive into the teen psyche, which has only gained popularity throughout the years. BETTER OFF DEAD... continues to stand out from other ‘80s movies and leaves us with endless memorable moments. ▶️Synopsis: Devastated after being dumped for the popular high school jock, Lane Meyer can’t find a reason to live. In between multiple suicide attempts, he begins a friendship with a French exchange student who reminds him there is more life to live. ⏩⏩Discussions include: The true story behind the unusually satirical, BETTER OFF DEAD; how a first-time, feature film director/writer got his break; expanding the teen comedy genre, including an atypical leading man and traversing the teen experience; the tone/black humor used within the film; cast discussion, including the well-developed relationships with supporting characters; critical reception, music, animation/claymation and, of course, throwing in our favorite scenes and classic lines from the film.**Starring John Cusack, Diane Franklin, Curtis Armstrong. Directed by Savage Steve Holland.** ▶️**PICKS OF THE WEEK** —Lindsay’s Pick, TERRORVISION (1986): In this oddball sci-fi/horror/comedy, a family’s new TV satellite installation becomes an invitation for a monstrous alien from another world. **Starring Diane Franklin, Mary Woronov, Gerrit Graham, Chad Allen. Directed by Ted Nicolaou.** —Justin’s Pick, ONE CRAZY SUMMER (1986): Bailing on post high school plans, two best friends decide to have a carefree summer, but end up helping a fledging musician’s family estate and, in turn, inspiring future life goals. **Starring John Cusack, Joel Murray, Bobcat Goldthwait, Demi Moore. Directed by Savage Steve Holland.** ▶️MURRAYMOMENT: Billy’s experience living through the 2016 Chicago Cubs’ World Series win, with a little tear-jerking memory thrown in. ▶️FINAL THOUGHTS: Cusack’s unexpected reaction at the premiere of BETTER OFF DEAD..., his most recent feelings on the film, effect on Holland’s career and long-lasting fandom for this inoffensively rare 80s film. ▶️NEXT UP: DPP TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY with GOODFELLAS (1990)!
We’re still in 1986, this time with TerrorVision directed by Ted Nicolaou. This B-movie is filled with slimy space monsters, swinger parents, and machine guns. Melinda and Aaron ask the question, is there more to this 80s cult classic, or is everything exactly as it seems?
Ted Nicolaou's career in film spans over 40 years and is the name behind many cult classics of "Trash Cinema" (Ted's words), however he may always be known as the man who owned the van in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Ted joins the boys this week as he talks about his storied career and takes the country of India to task! Also joining the boys in the intro and interview are returning favorites, Jasaudi Perkins and Madeleine Koestner. The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
It was inevitable—call it destiny, if you will--that the creative paths of Walt Disney and Salvador Dali would one day cross. Both men were born in the early 1900s, and although they were continents apart, they shared similar upbringings. Both had artistic ambitions and both would eventually become the standard-bearers of their respective mediums: Walt in animation and visual storytelling, Dali in fine art and the surrealist movement. Their personalities could not have been more different. Dali was the flamboyant eccentric, Walt the more reserved, but no-less driven, filmmaker. Each saw the other as a kindred spirit, though. And what began as a distant mutual admiration, evolved into a creative collaboration and later a lifetime friendship. In the late 1940s, Dali would come to the Disney Studios to help craft "Destino," a surreal short film intended to push the limits of animation and storytelling. It was not to be, however, What Dali called “a magical exposition of life in the labyrinth of time,” Walt called “a simple love story—boy meets girl.” It was there the two artists remained at odds. After less than a year's work on the project, "Destino" was shelved. Decades later, the Walt Disney Studios would resurrect the film from more than 150 surviving story sketches by Dali and Disney artist John Hench. The resulting film would be released in 2003 to critical acclaim, winning numerous film festival awards and being nominated for an Academy Award. The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco is hosting an exhibition about the two friends and showmen. “Disney and Dali: Architects of the Imagination” explores the artistic collaboration between the two men, showcasing not only original works of Dali, but also that of Disney artists Mary Blair, John Hench, Eyvind Earle and Kay Nielsen. Ted Nicolaou is curator of the exhibition. As a filmmaker, Ted has directed a number of horror films including cult favorites "Terrorvision" and "Subspecies." He's also created a number of DVD and Blu-ray bonus documentaries for Walt Disney Home Entertainment, most notably “Dali & Disney: A Date with Destino” which was included on the 2010 Blu-ray release of "Fantasia 2000." Ted Nicolaou is Tim's guest today in "The Mouse Castle Lounge."www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss

TerrorVision is an 1986 American science fiction horror comedy that's achieved some notoriety in cult film circles. The film is directed by Ted Nicolaou, produced and written by Albert and Charles Band and composed by Richard Band, all of whom would go on to later found and work with Full Moon Features in 1989. This is a fun one on today's episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast: A family's new satellite television system starts receiving signals from another planet and picks up a giant, bloated alien with an appetite for garbage. The movie was written and directed by the sound recording guy from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The subplot: the mother and father are swingers and place an ad in a newspaper to romance another couple and get more than they bargained for. The rebellious teen daughter has a boyfriend, OD, whose fashion sensibilities are Sunset Strip 80s metal through and through. The young kid is an expert marksman and his grandpa is a gun-toting NRA type. TerrorVision was released on DVD with The Video Dead double feature. Find more reviews www.reallyawfulmovies.com
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a real conscious community—one where people live in harmony, collaboration, compassion, cooperation, peace and love? That’s what skeptical reporter Juliet (Elizabeth Rohm of American Hustle, Miss Congeniality 2, Armed and Dangerous, Law & Order and The Client List) set out to investigate. On assignment from her editor at Profiles Magazine, this urban chic cynic is plopped in the middle of a modern day Utopia—and she finds what she never expected to discover –True Happiness. Aging Younger invites director Ted Nicolaou to share with us his vision of how a community driven by the motivation of love for one and all--"where people are more important than things"--as Swami says in the film, can resonate for the masses. Nayaswami Asha who is featured in the film will also join us and talk about her experiences on set and her 40 years as a close collaborator to Swami Kriyananda.

Most of the music this show was provided by Cockfight Club! http://www.cockfightclub.net/ Well, we love our Full Moon Movies, and we are back to talk about Subspecies II. Other things we talk about are Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and the book ‘The Ruins’ by Scott Smith. We talk more about how I don’t find most comedy funny these days (…and its not because I am offended by it …its just not that funny). We also talk about some other podcasts that you should be listening to. Subspecies II: Bloodstone (1993) R: When Transylvanian vampire Radu (Anders Hove) settles a dynastic rivalry by killing his brother, American student Michelle (Denice Duff) escapes the castle with a bite on the neck -- and the bloodstone, a mysterious relic crucial to Radu's survival. Radu chases the girl to Bucharest, where she seeks help … and begins to sense her own emerging thirst for blood. Ted Nicolaou directs this horror flick filmed on location in Romania.
