New Terror Surfaces. This week we dive into a film that somehow rips off the entire Jaws franchise at once: 1995's CRUEL JAWS. A rogue tiger shark, once a secret military weapon, escapes near Hampton Bay, FL, turning the waters deadly as the town prepares for a regatta. Meanwhile, struggling aquarium owner Dag Soerenson (Richard Dew) faces pressure from a corrupt landowner, unaware of the looming carnage. Also this week: Lance gets stung by another bee, Ben saves a baby bird, and all this film's stolen sharks. All this--and a whole lot more--on this week's episode of NEON BRAINIACS! You know what movie is awesome? Rambo III. So it would make sense that an Italian-produced ripoff would be just as awesome. You'd be wrong, and so were we, as we watched Strike Commando from Italian smut-peddler and occasional action film director, Bruno Mattei. Join us as we discuss the similarities between the two films, Reb Brown's charisma, and praise the final act's gratuitous use of exploding bodies. Find us on Bluesky, Instagram, and Threads @TCTAMPod and on TikTok @theycalledthisamovie.Our theme music was written and performed by Dave Katusa. He can be found on Instagram @dkat_productions.
Bruno Mattei is an infamous Italian director who's catalogue is full of some of the most egregious movie rip-offs of all time and this week's film, Cruel Jaws (aka Jaws 5) is no exception. Thankfully the cast was able to recruit Captain Steve from Bucket of Chum podcast to help us navigate through the confusing disjointed plot lines. Nate abandoned ship almost immediately and took Anna with him while Charlie, Pete and Captain Steve recognized the awfulness of the film and settled in for a good damn time. Don't let Nate's poopy diapers discourage you, three out of five hosts can't be wrong. Can we? I do encourage you to go watch it if just to see the blatant copyright infringement the movie is guilty of.

If you haven't picked it up from the movies I talk about on this site, I'm a big fan of Severin Films. I was so excited for this opportunity to speak with David Gregory, who is the man behind the label. In this interview, you'll learn about their new Russ Meyer releases, what it took to make that happen and how movies are selected for Severin, as well as an exploration of the films of Bruno Mattei and Joe D'Amato, the video nasties era from a true expert and even a possible sneak preview of a few upcoming releases. Thanks to Danielle Garnier, Michael Krause and David Gregory for making this interview happen. You can buy all of Severin's movies on their website, including the new Russ Meyer releases, Vixen, Supervixens and Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens. There's constantly something new and wonderful from this company and I'm so honored that I had some time to speak with Mr. Gregory. Important links: Theme song: Strip Search by Neal Gardner. Devin & James are back in the Den with their penultimate visit to Italy! This time we shift from focusing on one genre to examining a type of film that is not uniquely Italian, but they sure put their own style on: THE KNOCK-OFF. Low-budget films ripping off box office hits has always been a popular way for Producers to make a buck. Still, the filmmakers themselves can sometimes bring their own spin to a popular trope or trend and create works that rise above being called simply imitations. And then... there are the imitations. We make the case that there is plenty to enjoy about all the approaches, as long as you know what you're getting into. We start with the sharksploitation film that Universal Studios successfully took off the market for lifting the plot of Jaws in 1981, Enzo G. Castellari's THE LAST SHARK (with a bonus look at CRUEL JAWS). If imitation is flattery, then Bruno Mattei must be one of the most complimentary filmmakers ever to play the game, and we dive into his back-to-back sci-fi knocks-offs from 1989, ROBOWAR (Predator featuring a Robocop) and SHOCKING DARK (Aliens featuring a Terminator). We finish up with a couple of films that are inspired by the head-spinning, pea soup-spitting world of The Exorcist, but that build their unique plots and bizarre twists to create works that stand on their own, Alberto De Martino's THE ANTICHRIST, and Ovidio G Assonitis and Roberto D'Ettorre's BEYOND THE DOOR, both from 1974. Grab a can of Campbell's Pea Soup and a straw, and buckle in.
Eleven hundred men went in the water, only Joe and Rob come out, and the sharks took the rest. Also the pigs. It's Jawsploitation week and we check out Razorback (1984), directed by Russell Mulcahy, and Cruel Jaws (1995), directed by Bruno Mattei. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Razorback by skipping ahead to the 57:55 mark, and for Cruel Jaws by skipping ahead to 1:45:09. HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD (1980) is no normal Italian zombie film. Coming hard on the heels of both George Romero's genre-defining DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) and the now classic ZOMBIE (1979) from director Lucio Fulci this Bruno Mattei/Claudio Fragasso effort ‘borrows' elements from both. In some cases, the things recycled are surprising, such as the chunks of music composed by Goblin for Romero's film being inserted into the soundtrack. Other things that get borrowed are to be expected, like an attempt to one up the famous Fulci eye trauma sequence that made audiences worldwide to shudder. But the things that cause HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD to stick in most viewers' memories are the strange asides, terrible dialog, unexpected nudity and slow-motion stock footage of animals. Oh – and the bizarre tutu scene! No one ever forgets that. Three stalwart defenders of this twisted zombie epic join me to discuss the haphazard, sloppy film that was produced. They want to call it a classic. I just want to call it over! Troy Guinn, Jeff Nelson and John Hudson vigorously lay out a series of justifications for what I see as cinema crimes and finally manage to get me to admit to a few points of agreement. We examine the odd actions that characters in zombie film make for no discernable reason. We spend some time trying to figure out if the script was working its way through an exploitation checklist or if there was a less mercenary reason for the way things unfold. Each of us relates out history with the film and pick out favorite Bruno Mattei films from across his career. At some point we get lost in the possibilities of a 21st century BetaMax rental business but we retreat from that financially doomed idea soon enough. And we end the show with a unique musical contribution from Troy's oft-mentioned brother! If you have any comments about HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD or any Italian zombie films thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. Thank you for listening!
I love Bruno Mattei and in this movie, he was asked to make a happier Dawn of the Dead. He, well, kind of did. It also has the world ending. "I'll get you pregnant, if you can make that thing work." Our theme this week is RATS. So this time we discuss Bruno Mattei's wonderful Rats: Night of Terror.
It has been far too long since Troy and I gathered around the male bag….uuuhh…MAIL bag to find out what folks listening to the podcast think! Or, at least if they want to make fun of me. I'll take any attention, so - cool! We are months behind checking out the email account so some of these messages date back to 2023. I apologize about this but also think sometimes the wait is worth it. I mean what other show has a discussion of Bruno Mattei, Japanese comedy/drama film series Tora-san, WAR OF THE WORLD's symbolism and the thousands of film appearances of actor Morris Ankrum. Clearly, The Bloody Pit is filling an important niche in the movie discussion podcast world! And did I mention we have a visit from Vincent Price? Or possibly his ghost. With a cold. It'll all make sense when you listen to the episode. Maybe. And if you're interested in the podcast mentioned in the show that dives into the Golden Age of Ninja movies, you can give it a listen at this LINK. We've fallen behind on editing these Wasteland episodes so we're extending the Appreciation Month topic into December as well. So, we hope you don't mind a few more trips heading out into the Dystopian fueled nightmares of the Apocalypse. It's a month long celebration of all things Post-Apocalyptic so you can expect marauders, scavengers, mutants and mayhem, cool car chases, fights over water and fuel, and battles of epic proportions. Coming up next in the dystopian and action mayhem in our 7th and final episode is a rather obscure Italian flick with 1984's "RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR" from directors Bruno Mattei (aka Vincent Dawn) and an uncredited Claudio Fragasso, who were both also co-writers on this cheesefest. This romp tells of a nuclear bomb ravaged future where most people in the world live underground, but one group of scavengers go to the surface and find a secret abandoned lab plagued with secrets and KILLER RATS! The main cast portrayed by Ottaviano Dell'Acqua, Geretta Geretta, Massimo Vanni, Gianni Franco and many more Italian film stars of that era all under various aliases. This movie has an ending that is both shocking and hard to believe. Our deep dive discussion on this grueling flick is headed off by the duo of Cameron Scott with friend and frequent cohost of the Howling At The full Moon Podcast, Dustin Hubbard. Join them and buckle in because it's going to be a wild ride! "This stupid machine needs a kick in the balls!"

We end up discussing not only his lifetime love of horror but also the underground tape trading culture of the pre-DVD/Bluray era, the role Dennis played in a fiasco where Charlie Sheen mistook an underground Japanese horror movie for a snuff film, the poetic horror of French filmmaker Jean Rollin, the schlock-tastic Italian cinema of Bruno Mattei, the wild and weird world of Jess Franco films and his muse Lina Romay, the 1930s adaptation of Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff as the Monster, and much, much more!

Bruno Mattei alert. Copyright Infringement alert (not by Filmed Obscura, of course). It's rip off time! Welcome back for the perfect "summer's over" movie. Actually, it's more of the perfect summer movie, but the boys had to do Night Killer first. This month, Chris chose one of the most notorious Jaws rip off movies of all time to spotlight and let's be honest, it lived up to the reputation. So much so that Evan had to seek outside counsel after watching it. What film you ask? Why it's Cruel Jaws...also known as Jaws 5: Cruel Jaws. The boys watched the Severin release of the film which included two cuts. The version being discussed here is the Mattei Cut. So please, keep that in mind. It's no Jaws, or Jaws 4: The Revenge, or The Last Shark, or Deep Blood...but know it has footage from all of those included. Pour your beverage now...it's time to swim.
**Word of warning – the first fifty minutes of the show has less than great audio. For some reason a buzzing was on the track and the only way I could eliminate it was to crush some of the less loud portions of the sound out. Sadly, this dropped most of the laughter from the amused ladies in the room and causes the softer ends of some words to be lost as well. I'm sorry about this – I'll work to make sure it doesn't happen again.** I am joined once again by Bobby Hazzard and John Hudson to roll around in Italian sleaze! This time I chose the film and, since I was in a post-apocalypse frame of mind, we end up talking about our first Bruno Mattei film. RATS NIGHT OF TERROR (1984) is probably my favorite of Mattei's efforts, which some will claim is damning it with faint praise – I can't disagree. We talk about how we first encountered this mad movie and its regular video companion HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD (1980). Tied into that, Huson notes the strong similarities of this film's plot to the classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) siege scenario. Other post-apocalypse exploitation movies are used for comparison with this one coming in as a lesser effort in some way but not in others. The portentous ‘Star Wars' inspired opening voiceover has us trying to square the supposed 225 years ‘After the Bomb' timeline it provides but we do have a lot of un noting that the world ended in 2015. Actress Geretta Geretta has talked about this film on several occasions and we relate a few of her more interesting tales of working in Italian cinema without speaking the language. Other topics include dodging iguanas, buckets of rats and well-done fire stunts complete with some unfortunate animal cruelty. We do eventually end up spoiling the excellent ending, so you have been warned. If you have any comments about this film or any other we've covered on the show thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We thank you for listening and we will do our best to avoid audio problems in the future.
Michael Ransom is back but this time he's Brent Huff. Yet he manages to do all the same stuff as Reb Brown and adds on Indiana Jones to his abilities. So this is an odd version of the "idiot plot". Yes it qualifies because the movie can't happen unless everyone is an idiot. But it gets weirder than that with Michael Ransom's (Brent Huff) actions. All you have to do is plant the slightest seed in Ransom's mind of something and the guy goes for it. Not only goes for it, but goes WAY overboard for it. Consider the beginning when he's told that his former commander, Vic Jenkins (played by a very out of water Richard Harris) is not dead as reported in the news and that the CIA is involved. Well instead of going through proper channels and just asking what the story is, he busts in to the office of the CIA handler and busts his family photo in his face. Maybe start with just asking questions. I mean the guy even had an appointment to meet with him. That meeting ends with a judo chop to the back. What's great is that after Jenkins is kidnapped (just watch the movie) Ransom is enlisted to go after by the same CIA guy whom he just judo chopped (we have to assume his spinal cord was severed because Ransom is super tough and deadly) and all is good. But once Ransom finds Jenkins, who is unguarded and has no lock on his door, he just goes with it. "Let's get out of here, guy that is supposedly held hostage but has nothing preventing him from just leaving on his own of which makes me suspicious in no way!" Then Ransom, after being told the obvious double cross, is offered a job. He refuses because...? And gives the ransom (??) of $10 million in diamonds to a lady he met that morning. Nice planning, dude. Michael Ransom is a full blown idiot. Yet the plot isn't what you come here for (although its top notch bad). It's Bruno Mattei's shamelessness. While managing to directly rip-off Apocalypse Now, its subtle enough to get away with. But then he shot for shot steals the truck chase sequence from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Like we wouldn't notice! Its incredibly brazen and incredible. Strike Commando 2 is missing some of the silly fun of the first film but its just so incredibly stupid and willfully ignorant that its a total do. Brent Huff may not be Reb Brown but we'll take him.
This week we delve into the notorious Bruno Mattei's Italian horror catalog. Plus, we even premiere our new segment called Happy Monday. THIS WEEK: Devil Fish AKA Monster Shark (1984), Deep Blood (1990), and Cruel Jaws (1995) Our Patrons spoke and we listened. Still a little shocked they didn't vote to make Miros watch Hentai. Oh well. Nothing says SUMMER FUN like watching teens get eaten by sharks (or maybe a prehistoric shark-like fish with tentacles) in a trio of Italian Jaws knockoffs. Or, if you're Bruno Mattei you can't be bothered to film your own scenes of a mechanical shark trying to mangia some doofus so you just steal liberally from existing movie footage. Reb Brown returns to the podcast, a year after his astonishing debut as Yor! This time, he's receiving the full Actor Autopsy treatment. But does he have the opportunity to show off his acting chops, or just his chiseled physique?First up, we have Bruno Mattei's version of Rambo. And when you can't get Stallone, Reb Brown seems like the obvious choice for option number two. Get ready for screaming monkeys, staredowns with cobras, shirtless Reb, headbutting standoffs, exploding mannequins, more shirtless Reb, popcorn trees, cotton candy mountains, a lot of wasted ammunition, and evidence of advances in Russian dentures, in Strike Commando (1986)!You know those novelty energy plasma balls that were all the rage in the 80s? Well, this movie has a lot of them. And the filmmakers seem to be determined to bring back the hula hoop, by suggesting that it would make an irresistible accessory for erotic dance exhibitions. Yeah, other than Reb Brown, and poor Cameron Mitchell (in a bad Santa beard), those are the most interesting parts of Space Mutiny (1988).And then from there, it's the revenge of Bruno Mattei! This time, we're subjected to the Italian version of a certain Schwarzenegger jungle romp, featuring a not-so human hunter, stalking its prey. And when you can't get Arnold, Reb Brown seems like the obvious choice for option number two. Get ready for severed limbs, melting corpses, and plenty of digital vocalizing, in Robowar (1988)!
