What happens when a Ouija board, some fog machines, and 80s fashion collide? Brace yourself for our wickedly funny take on the 1986 horror flick "Witchboard," where the horror is as much in the plot as it is in the questionable acting and character choices. Expect laugh-out-loud moments as we unravel the tale of Linda and her supernatural misadventures, all while sipping on our themed drink, "The Little Devil." The film's attempt at suspense has us scratching our heads and reaching for another cocktail, and we'll tease out all the absurdities you won't want to miss.Is wearing sunglasses at night a fashion statement or an entire personality? We ponder this and other 80s clichés as we dissect the film's oddball dialogue and acting choices that seem to mistake possession for pregnancy. Our "Tropes Hall of Shame" is filled with those familiar horror staples that manage to be more comedic than chilling. Get ready for our critique of the movie's over-the-top fog effects, the seemingly affluent lifestyles of our characters, and those ever-predictable Ouija board antics. Plus, we draw some hilarious parallels to cinema classics like "Ghost" and "Star Wars."From eerily nostalgic music reminiscent of Depeche Mode to the peculiar on-set happenings, it's all here in our breakdown. We even throw in some salacious trivia, like Tawny Kitaen's link to OJ Simpson, and delve into the real Ouija board story that inspired a knife scene. Whether you're here for the supernatural spooks or just a good chuckle at 80s horror missteps, our episode promises a rollicking ride through the quirkiest parts of "Witchboard." Stick around for the "terrifying or titillating" segment, where we balance fear with humor, and discover why this cult classic still captures imaginations today. The Cult B-Movie series continues! The terms "cult" and "B movie" are controversial ones to say the least, but Kevin Tenney's 80s classic "Night of the Demons" always seems to pop up on those top ten lists, so we're happy to join the party. I mean, would YOU rather be watching the Olympics? We didn't think so.Jenny and Kaitlin have a whale of a time discussing Linnea Quigley's ass, what constitutes a well-deserved eye gouging, and what may very well be the first female villain of a horror franchise. In true whorror-host fashion, it's all a bit chaotic and there is mention of a LOST EPISODE... ! Maybe someday you'll hear it - but in the meantime - rest easy knowing you've got bodacious boobies. Dave Dreher talks with iconic director Chuck Russell and the cast of WITCHBOARD: Madison Iseman, Aaron Domingues, and Charlie Tahan. Emily, her fiancé Christian, and a group of their friends are opening a café in New Orleans French Quarter, by refurbishing an old carriage house. But a darkness descends over Emily when she discovers the Witchboard, an ancient Wiccan pendulum board once used to summon spirits. Christen seeks help for Emily from occult expert Alexander Baptiste. But Baptiste has secrets of his own. A modern coven of White Witches, a masked ball at Baptiste's mansion, and the legacy of Naga Soth, the Queen of Witches are all part of a dangerous game that puts Emily's very soul at risk. Based on the 1987 VHS video store staple by Kevin Tenney, Russell and his team bring a new spin on the classic tale of why some things found in the woods should just be left there.

NOT The 1980 James C. Wasson film in which an anthropologist and his students attempt to track down a Bigfoot responsible for a rash of violent murders… OR the 1988 Kevin Tenney film, Night of the Demons' where Ten teenagers party at an abandoned funeral parlor on Halloween, awakening demonic spirits… Rather, we all, hopefully, watched the 1957 British horror film, produced by Hal E. Chester and Frank Bevis directed by Jacques (Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie) Tourneur (or ‘Jack Turner' as the French Director was referred to in the UK). starring Dana Andrews, Peggy Cummins and Niall (Zeus from Jason and the Argonauts) MacGinnis. Adapted from the M (‘Montague') R. James story "Casting the Runes" first published in 1911 as the fourth story in More Ghost Stories, which was James' second collection of ghost stories.Screenwriter Charles Bennett owned the rights to the story and wrote a screenplay loosely based on it, using the title ‘The Haunted'. Bennett later regretted selling the script to Chester, as he was later approached by RKO, to direct the film himself.Chester decided the Bennett screenplay was “too tame” and "too British" so hired Cy Endfield who had been blacklisted by the House of Un-American Activities Committee as a Communist and forced to move to the UK. Despite his contribution, which was said to be "significant", he was ultimately uncredited. Cy Enfield incidentally was the writer and director of Zulu.Director Tourneur and Producer Chester had serious disagreements during filming. One argument was about the wind scene; Tourneur tried to convince Chester to replace two electric fans with two aeroplane engines. When Chester hesitated, star Dana Andrews threatened to leave the picture if Chester did not let "the director direct the picture" Chester also decided to show the demon at the beginning and end of the film, despite Tourneurs protests, he added the scenes in post production: Cue James' French accent… "The scenes where you see the demon were shot without me...the audience should never have been completely certain of having seen the demon". Original screenwriter, Bennett, was also so angry at the script changes, he said "If [Chester] walked up my driveway right now, I'd shoot him dead".Ray Harryhausen was asked to create the demon for the production, but he was already committed to The 7th Voyages of Sinbad. To accelerate the pace and make the film more commercial, the 96-minute original feature was trimmed down to 82 minutes prior to its release in the United States. This shortened version was retitled Curse of the Demon, playing in June 1958 as the second half of a double feature with either ‘The True Story of Lynn Stuart' or ‘The Revenge of Frankenstein'Kate Bush has said this is one of her favorite films, and it has influenced her on at least two occasions: the song Hounds of Love begins with a quote from a line spoken in the film by Maurice Denham, and somewhat more obliquely, the film ‘The Line The Cross And The Curve' borrows the idea that the possession of a small slip of paper with mystic symbols can confer great power, as well as borrowing several images and set pieces…Night of the Demon was also mentioned in the opening song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show ("Science Fiction Double Feature"): "Dana Andrews said prunes gave him the runes, but passing them used lots of skills". 1987 may have been the peak of eighties horror. The Tommy Jarvis trilogy had concluded and Freddy was not going to top his bout with Patricia Arquette. Few would argue that neither of those franchises had what it took to surpass "Evil Dead II". The wise thing to do would have been to ride on Sam Raimi's coattails. In steps Kevin Tenney with "Night of the Demons".

Are you interested in multiple careers in Hollywood? Gaining experience writing, acting, directing, and producing will help you to not only learn which one you like the best but also to understand the perspectives of the other professionals you will work with. Kevin Tenney is an incredible writer, director, and producer. After graduating from college, Kevin was accepted to the Cinema & Television Department of the University of Southern California, where only the top five percent of students are given the opportunity to direct either a Television Project or a Film Project. Kevin was - and still is - the only student in the University's history to direct one of each. Kevin wrote his first feature-length script, Ouija, as an assignment in his screenwriting class and then left USC four units short of his Master's Degree in order to direct it. Kevin's second feature, Night of the Demons, became a cult classic, spawning two sequels and a 2010 big-budget remake. Ironically his collecting started the same year as Murch 1992 when he visited Salem Mass for the first time. Rick and Murch have known each other for a long time as friends and fellow collectors before the formation of the TBHS. His passion for collecting talking boards is rivaled by his obsession of making them which he has been doing for about 17 years. He uses materials that most won't touch, wood from embalming tables and funeral type stuff. Rick's biggest accomplishment is his Ouija board -OuijaZilla, the largest Ouija Board on the planet. It is featured in Ripley's Believe it or Not, Bind Blown, 2020. You can find more info about Rick at ouijazilla.com.

***originally posted on Oct. 1, 2016*** “Where are you going? The party's just begun...” Happy October, B-movie fanatics! Leaves are changing, the smell of pumpkin spice hangs strong in the crisp autumn breeze, and Halloween is just over four weeks away! I couldn't think of a better movie to kick start the celebration of the season than Kevin Tenney's original cult classic Night of the Demons! Demons is one of those rare horror essentials without need of an introduction. It is a film that sinks its claws deep inside and stays put, leaving the viewer with memories of eyeball-gouging, neck-snapping, lipstick-stuffing good times. Few can forget Suzanne's (horror icon Linnea Quigley) brilliantly effective disposition of a no longer needed makeup accessory. I've known a number of non-horror fans who remember nothing about the film except Steve “Splat” Johnson's subtle trick-of-the-eye, poorly recreated by Jerry Constantine and company for Adam Gierasch's underwelming 2009 “remake.” Other stand-out moments include Angela (Amelia Kinkade) spinning wildly before a raging fire, black wedding dress swirling and swaying, as she performs a haunting demonic death dance to Bauhaus' “Stigmata Martyr” moments before biting off Stooge's (Hal Havins) tongue and spitting it back at him. Though Dennis Michael Tenney's (brother of Kevin) score has its moments, it's very much a composition of its time. Looking back on it now, it's easy to scoff at the dated technology, but I'd be willing to bet those synth beats and stabbing violin cues really got theater audiences pumped way back when. For this edition of B-Movie Bonanza, I, of course, used Scream Factory's beautifully remastered and restored Blu-ray/DVD combo edition, which runs 1:33:01 (including MGM's roaring lion prior to the opening title sequence). So, grab a big bowl of Halloween candy because it's time celebrate the season a few weeks early with one of the best holiday-themed movies of its kind! “HAPPY HALLOWEEN, ASSHOLE! AAAHAHAHAHAAHA!!!!” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/blindragepod/message

This week The GraveTalk ditched our Halloween party plans & opted for a night out with Kevin Tenney's Night Of The Demons [1988]. A movie that seems only possible in the 1980's horror renaissance. Was this night one to remember? Press play to find out!
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Kevin Tenney may not be as famous as some of his peers from the 1980’s, but he’s had a few horror movies that have become October staples. His most famous film, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS (1988), is probably one of the most famous horror films that take place on Halloween night. However, his feature film debut two years prior, WITCHBOARD (1986), is probably almost famous. Linda Brewster and her boyfriend Jim have a weekend cocktail party. Unfortunately her ex-boyfriend Brandon seems to not get along well with her latest beau. During a “game” using Brandon’s Ouija board, something goes wrong. Brandon claims that the bad energy between he and Jim have caused Daniel, the spirit of a dead boy, has become angry. The next day, Linda tries her own summons only to find out that an evil may in the house that’s more fearsome than the ghost of a young boy. The film got notoriety because Tawny Kitaen starred in it. Being a very popular television personality and model, she brought some cred to what was otherwise a B-movie. However, this ghost tale went against the trend of 1980’s slasher films and stood out as a fan favorite. Dark Discussions takes a look at this good hearted and fun throwback horror film. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

In the spring of 1987 blossoming genre director Kevin Tenney started production on a modestly budgeted 4 week production. The picture would go on to triple it’s revenue despite its limited release and go on to become a Halloween essential and respected cult classic that spawned 2 sequels and a remake. On October 14th 1988 Kevin Tenney’s NIGHT OF THE DEMONS was released opening the doors of Hull House to audiences and anyone foolish enough to enter
Nikki Folsom - Writer/Investigator https://www.facebook.com/NFolsomWriting/ http://www.thehauntedharlequin.com/ Nikki Folsom is an independent author whose fascination with the paranormal began early. She saw her first apparition at the young age of five. Strange experiences continued throughout her journey into adulthood. With limited resources and a new family, Nikki attempted to ignore the unexplainable activities and force herself into a “normal” reality. Her reality shifted quickly when her daughters began witnessing frightening occurrences of their own. Conflicted, she found herself with one of two choices - continue to pretend this activity wasn't occurring or facing it head on. After twenty seven unfulfilling years in corporate America and an intense curiosity in the paranormal, she made the decision to chase her dreams by diving head first into the world of writing. When she began volunteering at a haunted theater in 2009, she realized the historic location would be the perfect subject for her first publication. For months, Nikki invested time in researching and writing her first book, The Haunted Harlequin. Now that the book has been released, she plans to continue investigating, researching, and writing about other haunted locations from around the globe.Nikki was born in south central Pennsylvania. After a brief stop in Florida and Illinois, she and her family now call San Antonio, Texas home. When she’s not writing, Nikki enjoys reading, traveling, photography, theatre, and spending time with family and friends. She loves hearing ghost stories from her readers through email, social media, and at appearances.
