Myth Adventures

We're back! This week Derek is telling Josh about American legend Johnny Appleseed.  Turns out the legend is based on a real guy, and in addition to giving us all those apples he was also the first man in history to follow The Grateful Dead on tour.  

This week Josh tells Derek all about the Wampus Cat. A creature from Native American folklore that protects their homeland. Despite what the "good" people of Conway, AR would have you believe it is not a six legged cat, and most likely would hate all the white people at your school.

It's our first trip to the land down under! This week Derek is telling us the about an Australian aboriginal "Vampire" that could possibly be mistaken for a sunburned Danny DeVito.   It's the Yara-ma-yha-who!

This episode was supposed to come out before our first Arabian Nights, but mistakes were made and now it's not.  Luckily, there was no jinn in that episode, just a hunchback.  So this week Derek is giving us a little primer on the Arabian Jinn, or as we whites call them, genies. This week Josh tells Derek three short folktales from China about sinners,  animal to animal relations (not the sexy kind- gross), and why you don't f*** around with wizards. 

Greek Week is back and this time it's a double feature! Josh is telling Derek the familiar and not so familiar story of King Midas and following it up with the tale of Asclepius, the Greek God of Medicine.  If you're wondering how they are connected, well it's mostly that Apollo kind of sucks.

This week we are concluding the Japanese story of the Bamboo Cutter.  Tangents abound as the princess phones home and leaves a little smoke on the mountain.  Patrick Swayze makes an appearance so you don't want to miss that.

First off, I want to apologize for that title but after you listen to the episode you'll totally get it.  We're headed back to Japan. This week Josh is telling Derek the story of a bamboo cutter that finds a tiny person at work one day, and then spends his golden years trying to get rid of her but then also make her stay.  It's the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter!

We're returning to the wild world of American myths! Greek Week is back, baby!  We've abandoned trying to go in any kind of order,  and this week Derek is telling Josh the story of Bellerophon.  A "Hero" of the Ancient Greek Me Too movement, the slayer of the Chimera, and an atheist that met actual gods.

It's the continuing saga of King Arthur! Merlin still hasn't done much magic and Arthur wastes no time begatting on the kingdom.  It's probably the most famous story of King Arthur.  The one where he pulls a sword from a stone... like probably 15 times. Seriously, they made him yank that thing a bunch.

We're back and starting a legend we've all at least heard of, it's the legend of King Arthur! Josh is telling Derek all about Merlin's musical and controversial background and Arthur's dad who, as per the usual,  is a pretty huge douche.  Find out how King Arthur was born! You're not gonna like it.

It's the second half of Finn McCool's origin story.  He's finally out on his own and trying to make a name for himself, but he's gonna be an old man's slave and get a pretty harsh rejection from his mom before he'll get a shot at that.  It will all be worth it though, when he ensures Ireland gets to keep throwing epic Halloween parties.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day Josh is telling Derek the story of Fionn Mac Cumhail, lovingly pronounced "Finn McCool."  And yes, there's a lot of really borderline offensive Irish accents so just prepare yourself for that.  Grab an Irish drink, have a listen, and learn about the guy who is basically Ireland's King Arthur, if Arthur were way more... "Cool."

This week Derek tells us about some creatures from Slavic folklore to get us ready for the tale of the epically misnamed "Koschei the Deathless".  We're getting a house with chicken legs, a spirit for bath house antics, and all kinds of other stuff you may have already seen on The Witcher.  ***apologies for some audio issues this episode, they are brief and infrequent.

This week Derek tells some stories about Maui, and let's face it Disney has done everything.  The "real" Maui is way more fun the movie version, but we still like to imagine he's The Rock.  So come learn all about how it's not a bad idea to throw your baby in the ocean, and how you too can beat the crap out of the sun.

It's the beginning of a foray into the wild world of Indian legends! Follow us to India for the story of the legendary king Vikramaditya.  It's a story with all that you love; vampires, bad parents, and everyone's personal favorite, boons.

It's the day after Valentine's day, so why not a really messed up story about love.  In Greek and Roman mythology, we'll learn about how being too hot is worse than being too ugly.  We'll also get introduced to our new favorite form of transportation, and don't worry Zeus makes a cameo to be kind of shitty while doing his grandson a favor.  

We are switching roles this week and Derek's doing a little ditty from the Bible!  That's right, no religion is safe.  It's the story of our favorite bad prophet Jonah.  Why did he hate the Assyrians? What did he do in the whale? For a guy who created the universe God left a lot holes in this story, but don't worry.  We've got the answers.

We're back this week with a story from Norse Mythology about that time Thor lost his hammer.  Unlike the Marvel Thor, the real Thor's Hammer could be picked up by anyone, even total morons.  We learn about Thor's sweet ride.  We ponder what Thor would have liked more, David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar, and we learn that dressing in drag is a lot older than some of you probably think.

We finally get into actual mythology this week with the fore-thinking, fire-bringing Titan himself, Prometheus!  We learn about his brother, and that in every ancient culture, women can't catch a break. 

It's part two of Paul Bunyan! Trust us, the stories don't get any more normal, and Paul stays true to his Lumberjack Camp of Dr. Moreau roots.  It's American Horror Story: Lumberjack!

It's our very first episode!  We are starting it all off with the story of America's largest pitch man/ecological terrorist, Paul Bunyan.  This "myth" is quintessentially American for all the wrong reasons, and it was so good we had to split it into two parts.
