Chapter 10 - Hallowe'enQ1 - Is it shady that McG has bought a Nimbus Two Thousand — the current best broomstick in the world — for Harry?“Potter's been sent a broomstick, Professor,” said Malfoy quickly. “Yes, yes, that's right,” said Professor Flitwick, beaming at Harry. “Professor McGonagall told me all about the special circumstances, Potter. And what Model is it?” “A Nimbus Two Thousand, sir,” said Harry, fighting not to laugh at the look of horror on Malfoy's face. “And it's really thanks to Malfoy here that I've got it,” he added.Q2 - Is the Snitch worth too many points?Ron looked still more awkward at this [news Hermione was crying and wanted to be left alone], but a moment later they had entered the Great Hall, where the Hallowe'en decorations put Hermione out of their minds.Q3 - What position would you want to play in Quidditch?Q4 - Theories on how on earth someone could smuggle a troll into the castle?Q5 - Why didn't Hermione tell the truth?Q6 - Is five points a little too skimpy for two first years taking on a mountain troll and winning?Q7 - The point system at Hogwarts seems absolutely arbitrary, do you think there is a rule book for the point system? But from that moment on, Hermione Granger became their friend. There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.IlvermornyMarble statues of Isolt and James flank the front doors of Ilvermorny Castle. The doors open onto a circular room topped by a glass cupola. A wooden balcony runs around the room one floor above. Otherwise the space is empty except for four enormous wooden carvings representing the houses: the Horned Serpent, the panther Wampus, the Thunderbird and the Pukwudgie. While the rest of the school watches from the circular balcony overhead, new students file into the round entrance hall. They stand around the walls and, one by one, are called to stand on the symbol of the Gordian Knot set into the middle of the stone floor. In silence the school then waits for the enchanted carvings to react. If the Horned Serpent wants the student, the crystal set into its forehead will light up. If the Wampus wants the student, it roars. The Thunderbird signifies its approval by beating its wings, and the Pukwudgie will raise its arrow into the air.Should more than one carving signify its wish to include the student in its house, the choice rests with the student. Very rarely – perhaps once a decade – a student is offered a place in all four houses. Seraphina Picquery, President of MACUSA 1920 - 1928, was the only witch of her generation so honored, and she chose Horned Serpent. It is sometimes said of the Ilvermorny houses that they represent the whole witch or wizard: the mind is represented by Horned Serpent; the body, Wampus; the heart, Pukwudgie and the soul, Thunderbird. Others say that Horned Serpent favours scholars, Wampus, warriors, Pukwudgie, healers and Thunderbird, adventurers.Chapter 11 - QuidditchQ1 - How much would you pay to watch the Quidditch World Cup match in 1473 that had all seven-hundred ways to commit a foul committed?Harry thought Flint looked as if he had some troll blood in him. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the fluttering banner high above, flashing Potter for President over the crowd. His heart skipped. He felt braver.Q2 - How do we feel about Lee Jordan shooting his shot with Angelina during his commentary for the match?Q3 - The Weasleys are poor, how does one of the twins have a gold wristwatch?Q4 - Should they have magical protection for the players during a quidditch match?Q5 - What do you think about Quidditch?Q6 - What do you think about Snape jinxing Harry?Chapter 12 - The Mirror Of ErisedSo Malfoy, jealous and angry, had gone back to taunting Harry about having no proper family.Q1 - The wizarding world needs google? This book is kinda at the dawn of the internet, so Hogwarts probably isn't set with a computer lab, and most tech doesn't work around Hogwarts, but how much time would they save with a google search?“And you could ask your parents if they know who Flamel is,” said Ron. “It'd be safe to ask them.” “Very safe, as they're both dentists,” said Hermione.“Will you look at this? I've got presents!” “What did you expect, turnips?”Q2 - How much would you pay for a Weasley jumper?Something fluid and silvery gray went slithering to the floor, where it lay in gleaming folds. Ron gasped. “I've heard of those,” he said in a hushed voice, dropping the box of Every-Flavor Beans he's got from Hermione. “If that's what I think it is — they're really rare, and really valuable.” “What is it?” Harry picked the shining, silvery cloth off the floor. It was strange to the touch like water woven into material. “It's an invisibility cloak,” said Ron, a look of awe on his face.Q3 - Who did you think the cloak was from on the first read?Q4 - Is a hundred fat, roast turkeys excessive for the amount of kids likely staying at Hogwarts for Christmas?Q5 - Is it irresponsible to give an eleven year-old an invisibility cloak and just say “use it well?Q6 - Did you catch the riddle of the inscription on the mirror: Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi? He looked in the mirror again. A woman standing right behind his reflection was smiling at him and waving. He reached out a hand and felt the air behind him. If she was really there, he'd touch her, their reflections were so close together, but he only felt air — and she and the others existed only in the mirror.Harry was so close to the mirror now that his nose was nearly touching that of his reflection. “Mum?” he whispered. “Dad?”Harry was looking at his family, for the first time in his life. The potters smiled and waved at Harry and he stared hungrily back at them, his hands pressed flat against the glass as though he was hoping to fall right through it and reach them. He had a powerful kind of ache inside him, half joy, half terrible sadness. How long he stood there, he didn't know. The reflections did not fade and he looked and looked until a distant noise brought him back to his senses. He couldn't stay here, he had to find his way back to bed. He tore his eyes away from his mothers face, whispered, “I'll come back,” and hurried from the room.Q7 - This is way too personal, and I'm not going to ask this, but what would you see in the mirror?“So — back again, Harry?” Harry felt as though his insides had turned to ice. He looked behind him. Sitting on one of the desks by the wall was none other than Albus Dumbledore. Harry must have walked straight past him, so desperate to get to the mirror he hadn't notices him. “I — I didn't see you, sir.” “Strange how short-sighted being invisible can make you,” said Dumbledore, and Harry was relieved to see that he was smiling. If you ever do run across it, you will now be prepared. It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that.Q8 - What do you think Dumbledore saw in the mirror?Chapter 13 - Nicholas FlamelChess was the only thing Hermione ever lost at, something Harry and Ron thought was very good for her.“There's no need to tell me I'm not brave enough to be in Gryffindor, Malfoy's already done that,” Neville choked. Harry felt in the pocket of his robes and pulled out a Chocolate Frog, the very last one from the box Hermione had given him for Christmas. He gave it to Neville, who looked as though he might cry. “You're worth twelve of Malfoy,” Harry said. Q1 - What are your thoughts on Neville?Q2 - Is there a serious issue that the trio could not find the only known maker of the sorcerer's stone — something that makes the elixir of life which makes the drinker immortal — in anything they read until they got to the chocolate frog? Is this bad searching, or bad recorded history?Q3 - What position would you want to play in Quidditch?

The episode where we share our (kinda) investigation of the Basin Park Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas! Listen, Eureka Springs is a spooky girl and has multiple haunted hotels, so we had to hit this place up too! Full disclosure, we didn't really investigate but we did do a haunted tour, so evidence is gonna be limited here. We learn the history behind this hotel, all of the hoteliers who owned it, Sarah's extreme dislike of bare feet, use the name “Joey” way too much, and encounter a Wampus! www.thetipsyghost.com Find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok @thetipsyghost Email us your stories at thetipsyghost@gmail.com Show your support when you subscribe, leave a great review, & give us a 5 start rating— it really helps!

Hello! This week we're doing some legends from the Appalachians. First up we have Nate with the Wampus Cat, and two different legends and depictions of the cat. The Wampus can is well known for his two front pugilist arms and his extreme talents in the fine art of fisticuffs.... or not at all, we shall see! Following the Wampus Cat I talk about the Moon-Eyed people, there's not much information to go on about the people themselves but a bit more about the history and credibility of the legend. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/support

Wampus Cat The wampus cat is a cryptid or legendary creature, that is said to inhabit the forests of North Carolina. It is typically described as a large, cat-like creature with sharp teeth and claws. Some people believe that the Wampus cat is a descendant of the Eastern cougar, which went extinct in the early 1900s. Others believe that it is a completely different species of animal. There have been many reports of wampus cat sightings over the years. In 1920, a farmer in the Yadkin Valley claimed to have shot a wampus cat that was attacking his livestock. The creature was described as being about the size of a bear with a long, shaggy coat. In 1935, a group of hunters in the Uwharrie Mountains claimed to have seen a wampus cat that was about the size of a panther. While there is no scientific evidence to support the existence of the wampus cat, many people in North Carolina continue to believe in the creature. The wampus cat has become a part of the state's folklore and is often featured in stories and legends. Here are some additional details about the wampus cat: It is said to be about the size of a bear or panther. It has sharp teeth and claws. It is covered in a long, shaggy coat. It is said to be a nocturnal creature. It is said to be very aggressive and dangerous. Here are some of the places in North America where people have reported seeing wampus cats: North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Washington, Oregon, California https://www.google.com/search?q=The%20Wampus%20cat%20in%20Marion%20NC#ip=1 NEWS: NC tourist town rocked by violence in wake of defund police movement rolls out plan to combat rise in crime | Fox News 25 Gifts For Fans Of The Paranormal That They Actually Need Watch: Researchers teach parrots to make video calls - UPI.com Previous Story Update- https://thehauntedlibrarian.com/2023/04/25/ghost-hunts-usa-shutters/ AD- Want to Start your own podcast? https://signup.libsyn.com/?promo_code=CREEP Looking for something unique and spooky? Most experiments were dropped because they failed—and some because they worked too well! The Water Eater by Winston Marks, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode. Our latest 5-star review comes from Bedford Nick on Apple Podcasts in the UK. “Great discovery - Just found this and it's a real gem. I love the enthusiasm and the narration. I find it a great escape.” Thanks Bedford Nick! The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast has climbed into the top 10 Science Fiction Podcasts in Ireland at #9! We're #19 in France and #20 in Canada. Thank you for listening, rating, and sharing The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. And we love getting your emails, we received this from Noel in Edmonton AB Canada…“Thanks for the terrific podcast. I'm new to the show and am loving both the choice of stories and the narration. I also enjoy the introductory comments, which add colour to each episode. When I hear you talk about lost or forgotten authors it makes me think of James White, who wrote some of my favourite sci-fi short stories ever. He was, I believe, a British sci-fi writer in the 1960's. I have never heard anything of his on audio.Keep up the great work!” Thanks Noel, we're looking for James White stories that we can add to the podcast thanks to you.Winston Marks wrote a couple of short stories in the early 1940s and then disappeared for more than a decade. He showed up on the sci-fi scene again in 1953 when magazines published 4 of his short stories include The Water Eater. If Winston Marks sounds familiar it's possibly because we've featured him twice before. You may remember “Never Gut-shoot A Wampus” and “So They Baked A Cake”.From the old, yellowed pages of Galaxy Science Fiction in June 1953 our story can be found on page 56. The Water Eater by Winston Marks…Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Marooned! On the cold satellite of a dying sun,light-years away from home.... For Rex there was only one escape. But Carl called it murder! Distress Signal by Ross Rocklynne. That's next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.

They say that the Wampus cat used to be a beautiful Indian woman. Well, this week we're getting our East Tennessee on. We're going to be talking to Sonya from East Tennessee, and she will tell us about her encounters with the "Wampus Cat." a half-woman, half-cougar with feline eyes whose distinctive high-pitched scream foreshadows death. She will also tell us about a family of Bigfoot living in her area. The Knoxville Police Department has been in the news for the investigation of an elderly female who died in custody. This controversial video that was released exposes what the body cams really capture. This involved Lisa Edwards, 61, was arrested at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center by the Knoxville Police Department but became unresponsive and was taken back to a hospital, and later died. You will be shocked! We will be discussing that and much more this week on our show. I'm Sonya a 36 year old Appalachian witch living in East Tennessee. I read cards and help people on their spiritual journeys. I live in a valley on a property I share with my sister. We're firm believers in Bigfoot and aliens. We have a family of Bigfoots that live in these parts. I've also seen the Wampus Cat. She has occasional visits to the property and one of my favorite things to discuss. I also believe the land here is special because it does things to/for people. It can pick you apart and heal you. I also believe there may be a portal here. We have seen a lot of strange things like orbs and lights in the sky. There's a lot of land for things to travel easily. I'm also close to a lake with no houses between us and the lake. I also believe there's a lot of strange things going on with the weather, bugs, and birds the numbers are dwindling or just gone. We also have a lot of cave systems in the area that could be used for traveling or portals. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/support

This week on Anyway… We ask the question, how do you connect? We talk Dino nuggets, Wampus cats, and succotash. We then hit the open bar and win all the silent auctions. And later, we recite where we're from in a premeditated multi-tiered response. So, if your conversations go deep with party lingerers, then You are in the right place and we're happy to have you.
Today I talked to Richard Fulco about his novel We Are All Together (Wampus Multimedia, 2022). Stephen Cane is a guitarist – he's already walked out on one band to join another one that subsequently falls apart. He gets himself to New York City to try to rejoin his first band, the one headed by his best friend and former bandmate, Dylan John. It's 1967, drugs and girls are everywhere, Dylan is on the verge of becoming a rock n' roll star, and Stephen makes some extremely poor choices. When Dylan quits just before a big show, Stephen is given a huge opportunity, but it doesn't take long before he starts making more bad decisions. He's in turmoil, as is the entire country, and his choices in love and loyalty cause him to spiral into self-doubt. Is being a rock star worth losing everything he holds dear? Richard Fulco's first novel, There Is No End to This Slope (Wampus Multimedia) was published in 2014. He received an MFA in playwriting from Brooklyn College where he was the recipient of a MacArthur Scholarship. His plays have either been presented or developed at The New York International Fringe Festival, The Playwrights' Center, The Flea, Here Arts Center, Chicago Dramatists and The Dramatists Guild. Richard's one-act play Swedish Fish was published by Heuer Publishing and his stories, poetry, interviews and reviews have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Failbetter, Across the Margin, Fiction Writers Review and American Songwriter (among others). Richard is a member of the Pen American Center where he is also a mentor in the Prison Writing Mentorship Program. For six years, he wrote about music on his blog, Riffraf. He teaches creative writing and English at an independent high school in New Jersey. Richard interviews writers for his “5 Questions” series at www.richardfulco.com. When he's not writing and teaching, Richard is playing basketball with his twins, Chloe and Connor, watching the Mets play, riding the Peloton bike, or listening to vinyl. G.P. Gottlieb is the author of the Whipped and Sipped Mystery Series and a prolific baker of healthful breads and pastries. Please contact her through her website (GPGottlieb.com). This week Josh tells Derek all about the Wampus Cat. A creature from Native American folklore that protects their homeland. Despite what the "good" people of Conway, AR would have you believe it is not a six legged cat, and most likely would hate all the white people at your school.

Bears, Boston lemurs, battles with Hidebehinds?? What exactly is living in the large forests of North America and the rest of the continents of the world? What creatures or beings hide in the dusk, in the cover of trees, crevices, and brush? From Axe-handle hounds to Skogsra, we cover some of the funny and freaky forest dwellers that live in the legends of our world. Whether they guide you into the forest to your doom, kill you outright, or hike their boobs over their shoulder when your not looking, they will surprise and possibly delight you! they may even want to hook up, depending on what you're into... These beings sometimes rule their forests, intimidating those who they don't like, and messing with or condemning them. But, like tricksters, some are mischievous, and might only inconvenience or even help you. We sit down the very funny comedian Julia Desmond to discuss famed cat cryptid The Wampus Cat! In Cherokee legends, the Wampus Cat is the embodiment of a female onlooker cursed by tribal elders, as punishment for hiding beneath the pelt of a wild cat to witness a sacred ceremony. During the 1920–30s, newspapers reported of a "Wampus" cat killing livestock in North Carolina to Georgia. We also discuss The Beast of Bladenboro, a creature responsible for a string of animal deaths in the winter of 1953–54, in North Carolina. Could they be the same creature? Chad Opitz, a gentleman among standups, graces us with his presence on this week's (month's?) Wheel of Randy. "When it's Father's Day," Leonard Cohen once wrote, "Everybody's wounded." An exaggeration, perhaps, but as luck would have it, our Father's Day episode covers Randy's most bitter diatribe against fathers, Old Man. Chad comes to this song with a kinder light than me, suggesting there may be some humanity being revealed by the singer. Listen and decide for yourself. Chad and I also discuss Neil Hamburger at length. Neil is the comedian I recommend whenever I realize I have too many friends. More episodes coming sporadically. Dan Wade is a busy busy boy. In Songs by Honeybird, Peter McDade (Wampus Multimedia 2022) tells the story of Ben and Nina, two people who meet at a college outside of Atlanta. The chapters alternate between the voices of Ben and Nina, how they met and became a couple before unravelling and slowly moving on with their lives. Ben's story focuses on his life as a graduate student and the research he does into a possible dissertation about an integrated band from the late 1960's before two of its members died in a fire. Nina's story involves her quest for meaning, philosophical discussions with her talking dog who is possibly an incarnation of the Buddha and facing the untimely death of her father when she was too young to understand. The author, a talented, working musician, wrote and recorded a soundtrack of original songs to accompany the novel. In addition to being about fathers, race, growing up, relationship, and understanding one's history, this is a novel about seeking the truth. As a drummer (who started playing at eight-years-old) for the rock band Uncle Green, Peter McDade spent fifteen years traveling the highways of America in a series of Ford vans. While the band searched for fame and a safe place to eat before a gig, he began writing short stories and novels. Uncle Green went into semi-retirement after four labels, seven records, and one name change; Peter went to Georgia State University and majored in History and English, eventually earning an MA in History. His first novel, Weight of Sound, was published in the fall of 2017, and like Songs by Honeybird, has an accompanying soundtrack of original songs created with help from friends in the music world. He teaches history to college undergrads in Atlanta, plays drums for Paul Melançon & the New Insecurities, and spends time writing, making music, and with his family, trying to understand how to raise teenage girls. G.P. Gottlieb is the author of the Whipped and Sipped Mystery Series and a prolific baker of healthful breads and pastries. Please contact her through her website (GPGottlieb.com). Drink du jour: Batsquatch - Rogue Ales, Newport OR https://americanfolklore.net/folklore/2010/08/the_wampus_cat.html They say that the Wampus cat used to be a beautiful Indian woman. The men of her tribe were always going on hunting trips, but the women had to stay home. The Indian woman secretly followed her husband one day when he went hunting with the other men. Last week we heard from two authors who produced few works and we were unable to discover anything about them. However we know more about the author we'll feature on the lost sci-fi podcast today. He was born in 1915 in Spooner, Wisconsin, just 6 years after the tiny town became a city. He wrote a story in 1940 and one in 1941 and then nothing for 12 years. In 1953 he produced 4 short stories, then 23 more in 1954 and 19 in 1955 when the story we'll share with you was written. He was published throughout the 1950's, then stopped once again for 8 years with one short story in 1967 and one in 1968. In my past I was a television news reporter and I would love to have interviewed this man, but he passed away in 1979. Today's episode of the lost sci-fi podcast features author Winston Marks. He was also known as Win Kinney, Winston March, Win Marks, Winston K. Marks and Ken Winney. It may seem strange but I was attracted to narrate this story by its rather unique title. An interstellar hunting trip with Major Daphne could teach a man a number of lessons. Like being kind to fellow human beings, or—Never Gut-shoot A Wampus. As some of you may be aware- southwestern Kentucky, as well as parts of Missouri and Kansas were hit by a record-breaking tornado early this morning, Saturday December 11th. In Kentucky alone there are officially upwards of 50 casualties, with close to 100 expected to be confirmed. It was a real tragedy that was largely unexpected and unfortunately unafforded. So, if you have it both in your hearts and in your wallets to help even in a small way- I encourage you to donate to the Western KY Red Cross- who will be leading the way in cleanup and relief. They are taking donations through their Facebook page: https://bit.ly/3pP2OC3 Okay folks, I have a great show for yous guys today. This month, the pizzeria is visited by the talented Becky of Homespun Haints podcast. She cooked up some regional Appalachia-inspired specials to share with our patrons. First, she serves a little known tale of a possible Sasquatch encounter in Cracker's Neck Virginia, whose name is morbidly fitting, if this tale holds truth. The final dish of the night is the history of the six-legged Wampus cat of east Tennessee with a light sprinkling of meth hippos.Want to hear more from Homespun Haunts? This installment of The 13th Floor is all about cryptids who don't want to play nice! The gang is talking about the Wampus, Rawhead & Bloody Bones, and the Ozark Howler.
In Missouri they call it a Gallywampus; in Arkansas it's the Whistling Wampus; in Appalachia it's the just a plain old Wampus (or Wampas) cat. A half-dog, half-cat creature that can run erect or on all fours, it's rumored to be seen just after dark or right before dawn all throughout the Appalachians. But that's about all everyone agrees on. In non-Native American cultures it's a howling, evil creature, with yellow eyes that can supposedly pierce the hearts and souls of those unfortunate enough to cross its path, driving them to the edge of sanity.

The Wampus Cat is a human-feline hybrid that stalks the woods of Appalachia and terrorizes young and old alike. But while legends of the Wampus have been around since the 19th century, its true origins may lie in the tale of the Ewah — a mythical Cherokee creature who is both predator and protector.
On the trail of Wampus cats and Snallygasters, two intrepid cryptozoologists invite Farmer Gray to New Orleans for an interview and reveal why searching for legendary creatures is the cat's pajamas.

According to Wikipedia, the Wampus Cat is a "... folkloric creature with supposed shape-shifting powers can trace its roots to Native American folklore of the South Eastern United States." From the experience of those around Radio Memphis, a Wampus Cat is one who performs with Robert Nighthawk Tooms. In this very special episode taken from 31 March, 2019 of The Booze & Blues, The band came to the studio for an evening of performance, stories and talk of their brand new CD Cheating Time. Also, some time was set aside for some kind words for a great friend, John Kilzer.

S2 E3: Wampus Beast This time, on Counting Cryptids: We discuss our thoughts on therianthropy, how little we (personally) know about native wildlife, and a half-woman, half-cougar, hybrid known as the Wampus Beast. The Wampus Beast, or Wampus Cat, is, by some accounts, an 800 pound cat patrolling the Appalachian mountains, searching for a campfire to ambush. Others claim it has native origins, telling of a woman cursed for following the men into the forest, the cougar jokes could nearly write themselves! But with little to no (and really I mean no) actual evidence being presented, other than the tenuous eyewitness accounts of a man with a television program, could this all be fabricated? Is there actually a Native American werecat hunting men by the light of their own campfires? is it a localized version of the boogeyman? Or, better yet, simply an excuse to get wasted with the boys? Join us, Cryptid Counters, as we slur our way though another episode of the infamous internet program, Counting Cryptids. AKA There's a Goddamn Cougar in the car!
