église AB Lausanne ; KJV 2 Samuel (2 Kings) 7 And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies; That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee. And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in? Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar? Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime, ...

église AB Lausanne ; KJV 1 Samuel (1 Kings) 28 And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men. And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever. Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land. And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa. And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams nor by Urim, nor by prophets. Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee. And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die? And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. ...

Released December 25th, Christmas Day, Julie Taymor's debut feature Titus was 187th-highest grossing movie of the year, going on to gross just about three million dollars worldwide on an 18 million dollar budget. Titus, adapted from the Shakespeare (or possibly not Shakespeare) play came on the heels of Taymor hitting the cultural spotlight with her enormous Broadway success The Lion King. Titus makes great use of her maxilamist sensibilities, given that it is Shakespeare's most violent, sensationalist play - which also explains why it is among his least-popular, and generally considered one of the worst not titled Henry VIII. With an incredible cast and eye-catching style, and with Shakespeare adaptations as popular as ever, many assumed Titus would ride a wave of critical success and award accolades to boost its box office, but it was not meant to be. Beautiful, violent, over-long, absurd, inspired, and tonally inconsistent, Titus is more a curiosity now than a classic. This week, we talked about it with film critic Carmen Paddock, who, in her own words, "specializes in changing distribution methods and cross-media adaptations, where the limitations of film, literature, music, and time are explored and exploited to reveal new sides to old narratives." Catholic Church CatechismArticle 9 The Ninth CommandmentTHE NINTH COMMANDMENTYou shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's.298 Every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.2992514 St. John distinguishes three kinds of covetousness or concupiscence: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life.300 In the Catholic catechetical tradition, the ninth commandment forbids carnal concupiscence; the tenth forbids coveting another's goods.2515 Etymologically, "concupiscence" can refer to any intense form of human desire. Christian theology has given it a particular meaning: the movement of the sensitive appetite contrary to the operation of the human reason. the apostle St. Paul identifies it with the rebellion of the "flesh" against the "spirit."301 Concupiscence stems from the disobedience of the first sin. It unsettles man's moral faculties and, without being in itself an offense, inclines man to commit sins.3022516 Because man is a composite being, spirit and body, there already exists a certain tension in him; a certain struggle of tendencies between "spirit" and "flesh" develops. But in fact this struggle belongs to the heritage of sin. It is a consequence of sin and at the same time a confirmation of it. It is part of the daily experience of the spiritual battle:For the Apostle it is not a matter of despising and condemning the body which with the spiritual soul constitutes man's nature and personal subjectivity. Rather, he is concerned with the morally good or bad works, or better, the permanent dispositions - virtues and vices - which are the fruit of submission (in the first case) or of resistance (in the second case) to the saving action of the Holy Spirit. For this reason the Apostle writes: "If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit."303The ninth commandment in the Catholic Bible is "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's". The scripture for this commandment is Exodus 20:17 and Deuteronomy 5:21. Here are some related Bible passages and Catholic teachings about the ninth commandment: The sixth commandment The sixth commandment is "Thou shalt not commit adultery". The ninth commandment is related to the sixth commandment because both address the proper propagation of life. Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life St. John distinguishes three kinds of covetousness: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life. The tension between the “flesh” and the “spirit” The ninth commandment addresses the tension between the “flesh” and the “spirit”. Purity of heart and temperance Purity of heart and temperance are crucial to overcoming lust of the flesh. The good of community Coveting is related to the good of community. The Hebrew word for coveting The Hebrew word for coveting suggests not simply desire but desire that leads to action.

A small group of left-leaning Latter-day Saints are making the case that our faith requires not supporting Trump. Are they wrong?
How to be citizen of heaven while engaging in the world? Jesus proclaimed the "good news" of God's Kingdom - a reality available here and now, not just after death. In the early days of Christianity, believers risked persecution by declaring "Jesus is Lord" instead of "Caesar is Lord," a political statement affirming their primary allegiance to God's Kingdom over any earthly nation or leader. As followers of Christ, we engage in politics because policies affect people. Loving our neighbors means caring about issues that impact their lives. But our approach is unique: we start with our sphere of influence, recognizing that while we may not change national policy, we can significantly impact our local communities. In the political arena, we're called to advocate for others first, following Jesus' example of servant leadership. We're to be a paradox, not partisan - caring deeply about issues while remaining non-anxious, flexible in our political stances but unwavering in our Kingdom values. Reflect: How can you bring "up there, down here" in your daily life and community?
In any and every political divide or disagreement, the call of Christ remains on his followers to love our enemies.
Dear Donald Trump Jr., I see thou art whining about having to explain to children that a shooter almost killed thy father. Now you know how it feels to be a parent sending their kids to public schools in the USA on any given day. Thou shalt not complain about how unsafe it is living in America. Your father was the president for 4 years. What did he get done? Nothing. He literally people to “get over it” the day after a mass shooting in Iowa. Human life is meaningless to him. Thou shalt not complain about how unsafe it is as you dad's cult rallies. He has been stirring up a hive of insane bees for 9 long years now. Did thou really thinkest the killer bees would never sting thee? Thou shalt not blame Democrats for two registered Republicans trying to take out your dad in the last two months. Both assassins were registered as Republicans. This most recent one even voted for thy father in 2016! It is not the fault of Democrats, who have always condemned violence and expressed gratitude that Donald is okay. It is the fault of Republicans, who see no problem in encouraging others to commit acts of violence, as your father did on January 6, 2021. As he did last week against Haitian immigrants. As he always does. Hast thou not ever studied history? Being a fascist leader isn't all it's cracked up to be. Thou might want to read to the end of what happened to Adolph Hitler in World War 2. Those who live by the sword, die by the sword. Those who live by the violent rhetoric, die by their own violent rhetoric. Those who stand in the way of gun control, shall see their own family members die by guns not being controlled. Here endeth the lesson. THE LORD HAS SPOKEN! PS - Oh also, Jesus and I talked about everything that's happened in the last week in this week's episode. It's been a lot.

“Bearing false witness”, i.e. lying, starting rumors, speaking ill of another person in any way, seems to be a popular thing to DO (not refrain from doing!) in politics, every day, by almost everyone. But, the Commandments invite us to also look into our OWN hearts, as this is an easy one to break. Our words matter, in all contexts, in all our relationships, and online. Pastor Tania brings us this message. The scripture reading is from Ephesians Chapter 4 verses 25-30 and the Gospel is Mark Chapter 14, verses 66-72.
We all know that last year, I released an episode that got a lot more attention than I anticipated. I spent the majority of 2023 having conversations with fellow Catholics and Protestants about nonprofits, capitalism, and self-fundraising missionaries. I learned a lot from these conversations. I learned from many former or current missionaries. I also learned from the family members and friends (and many former friends) of missionaries. I heard some stories demonstrating the dark side of some of these models. Like any good system, it has the potential to be abused. My conversations led to a podcast, which led to me having a private meeting at FOCUS headquarters. This was fitting since they were by far the organization that was most upset by the episode. Despite invitations to come on the podcast to clear the air, I was never able to have a public conversation with anyone to help bring clarity to this topic. I recorded this episode after another year of waiting, praying, discussions, and negative experiences with *mostly* active FOCUS staff. The message of this episode is clear: many of us believe there needs to be some reform to the model of self-fundraising used by certain organizations. We may be wrong about that, but it's what we believe. Non-profits are supposed to thrive on transparency. And that is ultimately what I'm requesting on behalf of the many, many fellow disaffected FOCUS supporters. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/seekingexcellence/support

The commandment “do not commit adultery” is not as straightforward as it seems. In this sermon, Pastor Sarah shows how this commandment applies to our actual modern lives, including a discussion of healthy sexuality, how community helps strengthen relationships, the prevalence of attraction, the sacredness of sex, and the promise of grace, saying “God has more mercy than you have mistakes.” Our scripture reading is from Second Samuel, Chapter 11, verses 1-5 and 14-17. The gospel lesson is from John, Chapter 8, verses 1-11.

Christian nationalism marches onward in the United States, and our hot take is: that's bad. Louisiana has now passed a law mandating putting a poster of The Ten Commandments™ in every classroom in the state. Lawmakers claim that they're providing historical context for the laws of the land. Historians say that's bunk. So what's really going on here? Are the Exodus 20 top-ten really the foundation that undergirds all law and order in modern society? Does it matter what version/translation is used? Is ten even the right number, according to the Bible? This week, we're diving into the the decalogue. Louisiana politicians are pretending that they apply to everybody, but we're going to question if they even apply to Christians! We'll see how things shake out... Thou shalt not want to miss it!
