For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to writer Martin MacIntyre to talk about his novel A Summer Like No Other which is published by Luath Press.Martin begins with a reading before he gives an overview to the novel, which is a translation from the original Gaelic version, Samhradh ‘78.The two then discuss the central characters, the key role the Gaelic language plays in terms of character and plot, (even in this translated adaptation), the use of footnotes, the importance of telling and sharing stories from all parts of Scotland, the tales of ‘Ossian' and ‘Finn McCool', island living, the move from adolescence into adulthood, and so much more. They also reminisce about the 1978 World Cup, which is the backdrop to the titular summer.Martin then talks about his other work, including poetry, and the podcast concludes with him reading one of his poems in both Gaelic and English. We have been wanting to get Martin on the podcast for a while, so it was a great pleasure to finally get to talk to him about his life and work. For full details, and all the ways to listen, head over to scotswhayhae.com

Happy St. Patrick's Day! You know, this year our library decided to reassess their holiday section and in the course of things St. Patrick's Day got booted from the roster. Why? Because, to be perfectly frank, the number of decent St. Patrick's Day books that come out for kids in a given year is next to none. Smaller than small. For that reason (and because we've covered SO MANY of the usual suspects on our podcast already) Betsy decided to turn once again to the classic fable of Finn McCool or Fin M'Coul or however you like to spell it. Episode 307 was the last time we tackled this particular folktale, and that book was Finn MacCoul and his Fearless Wife by Robert Byrd. How will this book differ? Is it better? Worse? The same? Find out! For the Show Notes please visit: https://afuse8production.slj.com/2025/03/17/fuse-8-n-kate-fin-mcoul-the-giant-of-knockmany-hill-by-tomie-de-paola/
Send us a textHappy St. Patrick's Day! This week we're telling Irish stories! Janey is going to tell us about a man who runs away to fairy land, and Max is going to tell us about a woman who does the same! We hope you enjoy!A note on spelling: Janey's story is about Finn McCool, which is how "Irish Folk and Fairy Tales" spells it. The traditional spelling is Fionn mac Cumhaill, but since we wanted to make the "Cool and the Gang" joke, we're sticking to the anglicized version. He is best known for his versatile performances in film, television, and on stage. One of his most notable roles is as Commissioner Ervin Burrell in the critically acclaimed television series "The Wire." The restaurant and bar will have a full liquor license with a menu of cocktails designed special to pair with the bacon-centric food offerings. Talking about bacon we even discussed 322 BBQ's triple smoked candied bacon. Steve Luttmann (23:10 of episode) of Hercules Mulligan Rum and Rye available at Reading Terminal Market joined us to describe how they started and the history of the name. A unique recipe from the era of revolution and self-determination, custom-tailored for the modern independent thinker. Perfectly balanced Caribbean Aged Rum & American Rye Whiskey create an equilibrium of duality. The Rum & Rye blend is combined with macerated, fresh organic ginger - not artificial flavors. And it's the essence of this magical root that gives the blend a kick and builds its distinctive character. The potion is finished with a dash of bespoke bitters that add that extra flavor. No fakery, only honest-to-God ingredients that capture the essence of a bittersweet life. A little more conversation about cocktails with Carey Jones & Mixologist John McCarthy (37:40 of episode) joined us to talk about their new book ‘Every Cocktail Has a Twist: Master 25 Classic Drinks and Craft More Than 200 Variations' published by Countryman Press. You love your favorite libations, but sometimes you want something different that you know you'll like. Providing all the tools you need to create delicious new concoctions, this comprehensive collection reconfigures 25 timeless tipples, from Bloody Marys, Daiquirís, and Manhattans to Margaritas, Negronis, and Old-Fashioneds. Jeremy Scheck (07:25 of episode) has charmed a new generation of home cooks with his simple yet remarkably tasty recipes and his reliable culinary know-how. Now, in this stunning and personal book ‘ScheckEats―Cooking Smarter: Friendly Recipes with a Side of Science' published by Harvest & William Morrow HarperCollins it is brimming with approachable recipes and step-by-step guidance. Jeremy shares the building blocks of what he calls culinary literacy: understanding why a recipe works and empowering readers to cook with confidence every day. Recipes are designed to minimize single-use ingredients and equipment (for example, all baking recipes are no-mixer-required), encouraging versatility with easily available essentials and Jeremy's favorite kitchen staples. If the young gourmands on MasterChef Junior are anything to go by, lots of kids are eager to get into the kitchen. Lough NeaghSeamus Heaney's poem, published in 1969, captures much of what makes Lough Neagh unique. It has long been a place of myth and fable, where the palace of the Tuatha Dé Danann is supposed to lie beneath its waves. It is said that Lough Neagh was created by the giant Finn McCool who legend claims scooped out a huge chunk of earth and threw it after the Scottish giant Benandonner. He missed and thus created the Isle of Man. Richard believes that the Lough was created 400 million years ago as a result of massive tectonic events.Tory backing for PinochetMany of my generation will remember the military coup in Chile in September 1973 that overthrew the socialist President of Chile Salvador Allende. The images of the bombing of the Presidential Palace, of an armed and courageous Allende defending the building and the quickly emerging reports of brutality by the Chilean military, horrified many around the world.Siúlóid An Taoisigh. This column had a great day out in Derry last Sunday at The Chieftain's Walk organised by The Martin McGuinness Peace Foundation and Martin's family led by his wife Bernie. There was a similar event in New York. Well done to all involved. It was good to meet many of Martin's old friends and to walk the ground he trod on many, many times. Despite the rain there was a great turn out.
At long last, a new episode of Marksmess Podcast is available. After our long hiatus, we are back with an episode on Irish Mythology focusing on the Irish Giant, Finn McCool. We have a special guest, James McNally, better known as Jimbo, who will guide us through how Irish Mythology is structured.
Today I talked to Peter Mann about his book The Torqued Man (Harper Perennial, 2022). Berlin—September, 1945. Two manuscripts are found in rubble, each one narrating conflicting versions of the life of an Irish spy during the war. One of them is the journal of a German military intelligence officer and an anti-Nazi cowed into silence named Adrian de Groot, charting his relationship with his agent, friend, and sometimes lover, an Irishman named Frank Pike. In De Groot's narrative, Pike is a charismatic IRA fighter sprung from prison in Spain to assist with the planned German invasion of Britain, but who never gets the chance to consummate his deal with the devil. Meanwhile, the other manuscript gives a very different account of the Irishman's doings in the Reich. Assuming the alter ego of the Celtic hero Finn McCool, Pike appears here as the ultimate Allied saboteur. His mission: an assassination campaign of high-ranking Nazi doctors, culminating in the killing of Hitler's personal physician. The two manuscripts spiral around each other, leaving only the reader to know the full truth of Pike and De Groot's relationship, their ultimate loyalties, and their efforts to resist the fascist reality in which they are caught. Scoot and Ian Hoch is broadcasting LIVE from Finn McCool's from St. Patrick's Day. Did St. Patrick really run all the snakes out of Ireland?
Just in time for St. Patrick's day, we are joined by Rab Fulton from Ireland. He hosts live storytelling shows called Celtic Tales and is the author of numerous books. We discuss how linguistics, geography and trade routes shaped Irish lore. Rab gives us an amalgamated version of the Irish creation story, the wars and peaces of the Gods, the folkloric heroes, Fae Folk, Finn McCool, St. Patrick, Brian Boru and others. For more details on that see: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/celtic-tales-storytelling-show-tickets-503373151647I also teach storytelling, with an emphasis on landscape, memory and story. Storytelling is still very much a living part of the fabric of Galway and Connemara, and of my own family back in Scotland. This means that though I teach in the university, my approach is not academic as such. I teach as a practitioner of the craft. I also enjoy helping others create stories from their own memories and family stories. A good example of this is a bilingual (English / Irish) project I did with teenagers during lockdown. The Irish mythological hero Finn MacCool is known for many exploits, from the slaying of a great fire monster to the creation of Giant's Causeway. However, he's also known for his magical thumb, which he could suck on to gain knowledge. In this Stuff to Blow Your Mind two-parter, Robert and Joe consider the thumb of knowledge and its relations to other myths and even a little bit of science. Claire McGowan enters the freezing waters off Burgh Island, connected at low tide to the mainland by a short sandy causeway. There are 43 tidal islands around the UK, accessible just briefly each day along beguiling and perilous paths. Across the series, five writers walk their favourite causeway to islands of refuge, pilgrimage, magic and glamour. Claire grew up with the mythology of the giant Finn McCool flinging rocks at a rival in Scotland and building the Giant's Causeway. Arriving at Burgh Island, she steps into tranquil 1920s glamour, to sip Agatha Christie inspired cocktails in the Art Deco hotel bar. In this time capsule, Claire explores our relationship with Golden Age Crime and her own past; as the tide retreats, past relationships disappear with the waves and time simultaneously changes and stays still. La historia de Finn McCool. ¡Es un gigante y no tiene miedo! ¡No, no tengo miedo en absoluto! Simplemente se está alejando rápidamente de un gran problema después de dejar una dirección de reenvío incorrecta. In Episode 21, master storyteller William J. Hornyak kicks-off our third season of the How Humans Work Podcast on The Nature of Stress. Will shows us how both stories and storytelling have power and medicine inside of them to aid us in our times of stress. At the outset of this show we learn how the craft of storytelling came into Will's life and what he discovered about stories and their telling: to trust in his love of story to carry the moment. Further, we hear from this master of lore how images and moments in a story are condensed source of energy which can awaken the depths of our psyche. Gradually we find ourselves hearing Will spin not one, not two, but three different stories which all have something to teach us about how stories and storytelling can transform the way we look at the world, including our adversities. In the tales and the telling we gather a greater understanding of not just how humans work, but how the magic of stories can help us be wiser, more imaginative and prepared to meet life's ordeals. You're heartily invited to listen-in to this one, because with Will and his beloved friends (Biddy Early, Finn McCool and Scheherazade) we adventure into the land where lore, magic, and medicine meet.

It's the second half of Finn McCool's origin story. He's finally out on his own and trying to make a name for himself, but he's gonna be an old man's slave and get a pretty harsh rejection from his mom before he'll get a shot at that. It will all be worth it though, when he ensures Ireland gets to keep throwing epic Halloween parties.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day Josh is telling Derek the story of Fionn Mac Cumhail, lovingly pronounced "Finn McCool." And yes, there's a lot of really borderline offensive Irish accents so just prepare yourself for that. Grab an Irish drink, have a listen, and learn about the guy who is basically Ireland's King Arthur, if Arthur were way more... "Cool."
