Many things we once widely accepted as true and considered non-controversial galvanize intense debates.Leaders are often advised to stay neutral, to not get political when these issues come up in their organizations.Of course leaders should be mindful of what they discuss, how, and with whom. But that isn't the same as being apolitical or neutral. In fact, our collective discomfort with being political often has less to do with neutrality and more to do with avoiding discomfort or even silencing conversations outright. When leaders stifle discussions because they fear losing control, that's not neutrality, that's avoidance. And avoidance doesn't make a space safe; it makes it fragile. As leaders of teams from different backgrounds, lived experiences, and viewpoints, it is neither responsible nor possible to be truly neutral. But what we can do is create cultures of openness, generosity, and meaningful discussion. And in a time when science, health, food security, education, and mental well-being are being politicized, it's essential. In the second part of this series on science communication, my guest is an incredible leader, scientist, and science communicator. She shares critical reflections on what we can do to fight misinformation, regardless of our training and expertise.Jessica Steier, DrPH, PMP is a public health scientist, advocate, science communicator, and Co-Founder and CEO of Unbiased Science. She is driven by a mission to bridge divides and foster trust through empathetic, evidence-based communication. As the founder of the Unbiased Science podcast and newsletter, she is committed to breaking free from echo chambers and tackling health and science literacy with clarity and compassion. Dr. Steier specializes in evaluation science, leveraging data and storytelling to inform health policy and program improvement. Her work focuses on building connections, encouraging dialogue, and making complex scientific concepts accessible to diverse audiences. Listen to the full episode to hear:How pop understandings of science-related buzzwords make communication harderHow Jessica works to account for her own biases when creating contentWhy connection and empathy are key to beginning to break down misinformationHow connection without expertise, especially on social media, creates a flood of misinformationWhy we have to address the roots of people's mistrust of scientific institutionsHow Jessica and other science communicators are supporting each other through online abuseWhat to watch out for when influencers talk about health and wellnessThe real risks and impacts of some of the most common health misinformationLearn more about Dr. Jessica Steier:Unbiased ScienceUnbiased Science PodcastUnbiased Science NewsletterInstagram: @unbiasedscipodLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaThe Unburdened Leader on SubstackSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:Politics, Andrew HeywoodThe Human Condition, Hannah ArendtMarking 50 Years in the Struggle for Democracy | Freedom HouseHow Democracies Die, Daniel Ziblatt , Steven LevitskyTo combat misinformation, start with connection, not correctionBooster Shots: The Urgent Lessons of Measles and the Uncertain Future of Children's Health, Adam RatnerKendrick Lamar - Not Like UsFringeWeekend at Bernie'sDon't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead

This week I am joined by Danielle, a formal journalist, who I met at the ATX TV Festival, and she wanted to cover one of her favorite movies, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. If you don't know what the film is about, here is the synopsis: Sue Ellen Crandell (Christina Applegate) is a teenager eagerly awaiting her mother's (Concetta Tomei) summer-long absence. While the babysitter (Eda Reiss Merin) looks after her rambunctious younger siblings, Sue Ellen can party and have fun. But then the babysitter abruptly dies, leaving the Crandells short on cash. Sue Ellen finds a sweet job in fashion by lying about her age and experience on her résumé. But, while her siblings run wild, she discovers the downside of adulthood. White Wine Spritzer: Ingredients 3 parts Sauvignon Blanc 1 part club soda Lime wedge Directions Pour wine into an ice filled wine glass. Top with club soda, and garnish with a lime wedge. Or you could always make a martini & rossi on the rocks, that is both sweet and dry. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead Drinking Game (drunkenme.com): Drink when... Gus is hit on by Sue-Ellen. Walter is seen watching TV. someone gives a reason why the babysitter isn't there. Kenny is seen drunk or stoned. Sue-Ellen lies. something is bought with the "borrowed" petty cash. one of Sue-Ellen's fashion "designs" is shown. "Clown-Dog." If you don't know what that means, I just clowned you, dog. Caroline acts like a bitch. As always, drink responsibly and with others. Follow or subscribe wherever you listen to the podcast. Get ready for 33 years-worth of more laughs, more hijinks, and more melanin.Directed by Wade Allain-Marcus from a screenplay by Chuck Hayward (Ted Lasso, WandaVision), DON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER'S DEAD boasts an exciting, multigenerational cast of Simone Joy Jones (Bel-Air, Anything Possible), Patricia "Ms. Pat" Williams, Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You, Coming 2 America) with June Squibb (Thelma, Nebraska) and Nicole Richie (Summer Camp, Great News). A cult classic reimagined, DON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER'S DEAD is serving laugh-out-loud moments with a delightful blend of rapid fire jokes and touching moments, making it a timeless gem that will be equally loved by die-hard fans of the original and young audiences looking for a comedy that speaks to their generation. Synopsis - Seventeen-year-old Tanya Crandell (Simone Joy Jones) is stoked to spend the summer wilding out with her friends in Spain before heading to college in the fall. But her mom (Ms. Pat) puts the kibosh on her plans when she heads to a much-needed wellness retreat in Thailand, forcing Tanya to stay home with her three siblings and an insufferable babysitter instead. Following the unexpected, and bittersweet, death of their elderly babysitter (June Squibb), Tanya gets a job working for the confident and ambitious Rose (Nicole Richie) at a fledgling fashion retailer. As if managing a corporate job weren't enough, she's also juggling taking care of her siblings - stoner/skater Kenny (Donielle T. Hansley, Jr.), neo-goth Melissa (Ayaamii Sledge), and precocious Zac (Carter Young), and a complicated romance with the impossibly charming Bryan (Myles Fowler). The babysitter's death also means the death of Tanya's summer of freedom. She's now left facing the responsibility of adulthood, making her wonder why the hell she was in such a hurry to grow up.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

She's now left facing the responsibility of adulthood, making her wonder why the hell she was in such a hurry to grow up.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

For our last episode of Saxon Samhain, we're tackling a lesser known, horny and hair-raising John Saxon film with My Mom's a Werewolf from 1989. This film seems like it would meet the pre-teen dynamic of other films of the time like Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead but it's a lot more risque than that, banking on sexual innuendos and the inner animal as part of its werewolf metaphor. And you know what, it's pretty fun for what it does - we talk about the great Saxon in a Vincent Price-style role, the film's hamfisted comedy, and there's even some actual Halloween in the movie too! We're also drinking 1911 Hard Cider's Loganberry Buffalo Bills tie-in. Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro 12:00-17:00 Beer (cider) talk 17:00-end My Mom's a Werewolf That does it for Saxon Samhain and the Halloween season! Thanks for sticking with us through thick and thin.
