Many things we once widely accepted as true and considered non-controversial galvanize intense debates.Leaders are often advised to stay neutral, to not get political when these issues come up in their organizations.Of course leaders should be mindful of what they discuss, how, and with whom. But that isn't the same as being apolitical or neutral. In fact, our collective discomfort with being political often has less to do with neutrality and more to do with avoiding discomfort or even silencing conversations outright. When leaders stifle discussions because they fear losing control, that's not neutrality, that's avoidance. And avoidance doesn't make a space safe; it makes it fragile. As leaders of teams from different backgrounds, lived experiences, and viewpoints, it is neither responsible nor possible to be truly neutral. But what we can do is create cultures of openness, generosity, and meaningful discussion. And in a time when science, health, food security, education, and mental well-being are being politicized, it's essential. In the second part of this series on science communication, my guest is an incredible leader, scientist, and science communicator. She shares critical reflections on what we can do to fight misinformation, regardless of our training and expertise.Jessica Steier, DrPH, PMP is a public health scientist, advocate, science communicator, and Co-Founder and CEO of Unbiased Science. On today's brunch we discuss our the childhood movies that we remember fondly but are unsure if others have seen. Movies included are D.A.R.Y.L, Inner Space, Clifford, Camp Nowhere, The Indian in the Cupboard, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, Star Kid, Strange Brew, Remote and many more. We reflect on how these movies were significant to us as kids because of how much we watched them on VHS and we wonder if any deserve it's own episode. Learn more about your ad choices. This week I am joined by Danielle, a formal journalist, who I met at the ATX TV Festival, and she wanted to cover one of her favorite movies, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. If you don't know what the film is about, here is the synopsis: Sue Ellen Crandell (Christina Applegate) is a teenager eagerly awaiting her mother's (Concetta Tomei) summer-long absence. While the babysitter (Eda Reiss Merin) looks after her rambunctious younger siblings, Sue Ellen can party and have fun. But then the babysitter abruptly dies, leaving the Crandells short on cash. Sue Ellen finds a sweet job in fashion by lying about her age and experience on her résumé. But, while her siblings run wild, she discovers the downside of adulthood. White Wine Spritzer: Ingredients 3 parts Sauvignon Blanc 1 part club soda Lime wedge Directions Pour wine into an ice filled wine glass. Top with club soda, and garnish with a lime wedge. Or you could always make a martini & rossi on the rocks, that is both sweet and dry. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead Drinking Game (drunkenme.com): Drink when... Gus is hit on by Sue-Ellen. Walter is seen watching TV. someone gives a reason why the babysitter isn't there. Kenny is seen drunk or stoned. Sue-Ellen lies. something is bought with the "borrowed" petty cash. one of Sue-Ellen's fashion "designs" is shown. "Clown-Dog." If you don't know what that means, I just clowned you, dog. Caroline acts like a bitch. As always, drink responsibly and with others. Follow or subscribe wherever you listen to the podcast. For our last episode of Saxon Samhain, we're tackling a lesser known, horny and hair-raising John Saxon film with My Mom's a Werewolf from 1989. This film seems like it would meet the pre-teen dynamic of other films of the time like Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead but it's a lot more risque than that, banking on sexual innuendos and the inner animal as part of its werewolf metaphor. And you know what, it's pretty fun for what it does - we talk about the great Saxon in a Vincent Price-style role, the film's hamfisted comedy, and there's even some actual Halloween in the movie too! We're also drinking 1911 Hard Cider's Loganberry Buffalo Bills tie-in. Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro 12:00-17:00 Beer (cider) talk 17:00-end My Mom's a Werewolf That does it for Saxon Samhain and the Halloween season! Send us a textRemember "Toy Soldiers" from 1991? The movie where terrorists take over a prep school with machine gun action and explosions galore. Did you also know that it was rated R? We didn't either. But we remember it was the guy who was a Hobbit, and it had the kid from "Stand By Me" who gets a leech stuck to his balls, and the kid from "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" & "Adventures in Babysitting". Throw in the great Louis Gossett Jr. and we are more than excited to go back to 1991 and see why we remember liking this movie.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Actor and filmmaker Wade Allain-Marcus has a unique approach toward his involvement in a variety of films and television projects. It derives from factors like his mixed background, training in the Experimental Theatre Wing (ETW) at NYU, and growing up with parents in the business. The approach is one thing, but the result speaks for itself and is shaped by the ensembles he finds himself immersed into, such as the regular casts of HBO's Insecure or Netflix's Eric, the latter opposite Benedict Cumberbatch. From Lucy Forbes to Antoine Fuqua to John Singleton, Wade has worked with a variety of interesting directors who have affected his own approach to the craft. After making his directorial debut with Una y Otra y Otra vez, starring NYU classmate Gina Rodriguez, he directed the acclaimed French Dirty which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2015, and dealth with topics including male-friendships and infidelity in the context of a love triangle. He shot the film with close friends and NYU classmates including Arjun Gupta and his spouse Melina Lizette. Following a host of acting projects, he joined the writer's room of Grownish, which he also directed an episode of, and recently directed Academy Award Nominee June Squibb in the BET remake of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. in our conversation, we discussed parental relationships and influence; the musicality of filmmaking; and why it's so difficult to trivialize his acting and directing credits.Opening Credits: Jangwa - V I CC BY 4.0; LaFaena - Car Drive I CC BY 4.0.
