Today, April 30, marks the 15th anniversary of Gerry Ryan's untimely death aged 53. That Gerry-shaped hole has never quite been filled at RTÉ. At his best, the Dubliner was a broadcaster of the first rank, one who could delight, entertain, inform, infuriate and challenge the listener – often over the course of a single show. But in the end, the life of Gerry Ryan was tragically cut short on his sudden death, which was as hotly debated as any “Ryan Line” phone-in special. Host; Fionnán Sheahan, Guests; John Meagher and Niamh Horan Copy: Today, April 30, marks the 15th anniversary of Gerry Ryan's untimely death aged 53. That Gerry-shaped hole has never quite been filled at RTÉ. At his best, the Dubliner was a broadcaster of the first rank, one who could delight, entertain, inform, infuriate and challenge the listener – often over the course of a single show. He was an undeniable force of nature in the world of Irish broadcasting. Controversy also didn't really faze the man, in fact, he made his career off the back of it. His voracious appetite for life, and indeed becoming a major part of the lives of his audience, was quintessential Gerry Ryan, as was his signature rambunctious approach to the microphone. Love or loathe the man, you had an opinion about him. But in the end, the life of Gerry Ryan was tragically cut short, with his sudden death as hotly debated as any “Ryan Line” phone-in special. Today on the Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Mediahuis Ireland journalists John Meagher and Niamh Horan, to reflect on the days of a true broadcasting legend, his legacy on the Irish airwaves and to remember the days when the Ryan Line was open. Send us a text✨ FREE LEARNING RESOURCES FOR A YEAR! - https://irishpagan.school/freeIn this video, Jon O'Sullivan from the Irish Pagan School explores the heart-wrenching story of Sadhbh, the mother of Oisín, from Irish mythology. Sadhbh's tragic fate begins when she is magically transformed into a deer against her will by the Dark Man, known as an fear doirche. Her eventual escape to the home of Fionn mac Cumhaill, her brief happiness, and her ultimate loss make for one of the saddest tales from the Fenian Cycle.Discover how Sadhbh's story ties into Fionn, his loyal hounds Bran and Sceolan, and the birth of Oisín, one of Ireland's greatest legendary heroes. If you wish to be a candidate for the Presidential election in Ireland, you must have the support of 20 Oireachtas members or four local authorities. The Irish Times contacted councillors across the country to find out how many would give their support to Conor McGregor putting his name on the ballot. Kerry Fianna Fáil councillor Fionnán Fitzgerald was one of those who responded to the survey.

In Triratna, learning to understand what is truly beautiful is seen as a path to Enlightenment itself. In this episode we find ourselves exploring this in an unexpected and extraordinary way at the seat of all Buddhist paths and myths, Bodh Gaya in India. Not far from the bodhi tree, where the Buddha's great achievement is said to have taken place, you'll find us deep in conversation with visitiing leaders from the Dublin Buddhist Centre about their vision of building a Buddhist retreat centre in Eire: a realm of beauty and a fitting home for distinctively Irish Dharma practice in the heart of County Clare. We hear about the retreat centre's name Shubha Vihara—The Place of Beauty—and how it sits alongside the legendary mythic names, spaces and stories of Ireland, before and after St. Patrick. We meet Brigid, Cuchulain (Setanta), and Fionn mac Cumhail as he catches the Salmon of Knowledge; and visit in our imagination Lough Derg, the ancient passage tomb of Newgrange, and the Hill of Tara—crowning place for the High Kings of Ireland. All while exploring aspects of Christianity's impact on the country's pagan spiritual history, and the role of positive warrior culture as it manifests and is transformed in both Buddhist and Irish contexts. It's hard work building magic spaces and the team give us a glimpse into what's involved on the ground trying to transmute spreadsheets and fundraising calls into the magic of genuine community, alive with deep possibilities, where practice is—somehow—palpably rooted in the native earth and energies of a specific land and a society ready for change. Join us for an inspiring episode for the ages about a distinctively Buddhist contirbution to Irish culture. As a bonus, we close this conversation with a recitation of the traditional Buddhist ethical precepts rendered into Gaelic. Beautiful indeed! The Dáil had to be suspended yesterday as the row over speaking rights to independent TDs, who support the government but want designated time to question the coalition, rages on. Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae is one of the independents who now qualify for this speaking time as it was passed in the Dáil yesterday. 0pposition parties say it’s wrong to allocate opposition speaking time to TDs who support the government. The new speaking time allocation will also allow backbench Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael deputies question the government. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said this was stroke politics and would not allow the government to be held to account. The Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the opposition was completely disproportionate in their response over what he said was an additional eight minutes of speaking time on two days in the Dail. The image that went viral from yesterday’s chaos was Tipperary North TD Michael Lowry of the Rural Independent Group – who was at the heart of the deal that independents made with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael - giving a two-finger gesture to Paul Murphy of People Before Profit. Jerry spoke to Deputy Danny Healy-Rae and Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry, Michael Cahill. Jerry also spoke to Fionnán Sheehan, Ireland editor with the Irish Independent.

This weeks episode was just such a pleasure to record from start to finish – Ailbhe Garrihy is my guest this week and she is just the most engaging and warm person to chat to, and I know it's such a podcast cliche but I really could have talked to her for hours. Ailbhe is not only the general manager of her thriving family business Dublin Bay Cruises but she's also a mam of two little boys, Sean and Fionn, who at ages 4 and 2 keep her very busy. We chat about raising boys having known only sisters and girls in her family for most of her life, about taking her two on an 11 hour flight to San Francisco and living to tell the tale, and her disciplining hacks for getting her two lads to comply (I call them threats in my house, but maybe that's too strong a word?) Ailbhe has the most grateful and positive approach to parenting, and this episode will give anyone expecting a boy, or a second boy, a real insight into all the loveliness to come. I'll be back next week with another episode. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Flushed with their firestuffostered friendship, WAKE celebrates St. Patrick's Day by exploring all of the many ways that Finnegans Wake refers to whiskey: Ireland's beloved, potent créatúr. Joined by world whiskey historian and former Sweny's volunteer Fionnán O'Connor, we explode some myths regarding monks, St Patrick, and potatoes, brush off our pub stool wisdom, prepare the worm on our darling little stills, and consider the role trust plays in what is simultaneously the oldest and youngest whiskey industry in the world. So, tuck yourself into a snug in your local shebeen with a ball of malt, and don't forget to get in on a round: we bet you can't stay for just one. Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast, where we tell Irish myths set to original music. In this episode, we continue our series on the Fianna, the Fianna Saga, with a particularly memorable arrival at Tara. We might all know the Salmon of Knowledge story or the burning of Tara at Samhain, but this tale offers a fresh perspective on this legendary chapter. My sister, Sorcha, told this story. Before we dive in, we'd like to take a moment to thank our sponsor for this episode—Tigh'n Alluis, the Irish Sweat House. This family-run business, created by siblings, two brothers, is reviving Ireland's ancient sweat house tradition. Places that were once used for healing, restoration, easing rheumatism to curing colds. Positioned in the stunning location in the Dublin mountains overlooking the Wicklow and the Irish Sea, Tigh'n Alluis blends old Irish mythology with holistic practices, using the four elements—fire, water, air, and earth—to create a sauna experience like no other. You'll leave feeling restored, refreshed, and connected to an age-old Irish healing tradition. You'll find more about them in the show notes—be sure to check them out.
