Welcome to Prone to Wonder, a podcast where no questions are off limits. Join us (Amber Humphries and Becka Robinson), each week as best friends, women, and ex-ministry junkies navigate conversations about deconstruction, reconstruction, growth, and wondering aloud about all the things we weren’t supposed to wonder. Having different perspectives, these conversations aren’t about having all the answers, but giving yourself permission to ask questions and forge your own path.

Happy 50th Episode!!!!! And happy 10,000 downloads! We are so so so honored you're wondering along with us. Thank you so much for supporting our conversations with your engagement! To honor this milestone we decided to do a follow up to Becka's story and share Amber's story of deconstructing and reconstructing. While we're finishing up some technical changes and shifts, we're jumping back in with some backlogged conversations. In this episode, we talk through how religion and capitalism have impacted our need to feel like we've accomplished enough. Amber specifically brings up some issues with growing up focusing on having a large impact in ministry, and now figuring out what success means with that new void. If you've wondered "what's next" or "what do I do with my life now", this is a great conversation for you. Join in and wonder with us. We're back with another conversation about sensuality, sexuality, and all the ways growing up in early 2000's purity culture affected our development of both of those things. In this episode, we go over some of the reactions and questions Amber got when she did an anonymous Q&A on her instagram and her story of coming out, identifying as queer while in a heteronormative monogamous relationship, and her perspective on unraveling sexuality and orientation as a woman in your 30's. Happy New Year Wonderers! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and we are so excited to be back for another season of Prone To Wonder. Join us today as we sit down together for our first recording of the year and Amber shares about a midlife existential crisis she's currently in and we jump all over from topic to topic related to how sometimes in a deconstruction journey it spirals way beyond just deconstructing our religious beliefs. If the midterm elections left you feeling chaotic and frustrated, you're not alone. Politics are tricky to navigate in general but if you've switched sides or are in a deconstruction or faith transition that is leaving you with differing perspectives than your family, friends, or previous community it can feel extra tricky and frustrating. *18+ convo* For those of us who grew up in the early 2000's height of purity culture and are now raising kids of our own, navigating the conversations around sex, safety, expectations, and respect with our kids can feel especially tricky. Most of us don't have a positive roadmap of how to have these conversations and it can be a battle against fear when we are trying to figure out what to say and how to approach things. As parents of preteens who are growing up in the age of tiktok, Amber and Becka are navigating this in real time and in today's conversation share how they are approaching it and what they think is the number 1 most important thing to remember in these conversations no matter where you fall in your beliefs. Becka and Amber dig deep into the concept of "EMBODIMENT" and what it means to them in their deconstruction and reclamation journeys. Embodiment and somatics are a popular topic but what does that mean for those of us who were taught not to trust our bodies or that our natural urges were evil? Listen in as the ladies dig deeper into the big feelings they were taught they shouldn't feel and how they've been working to reclaim a sense of embodiment. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
Welcome to our new release day! Thursdays are where its at! Hope you're hanging with us today because this is a topic we hear in conversations a LOT! How do we deal with doubt during deconstruction or a faith transition? That little voice in the back of our mind that says, "But what if you're wrong about all this?!" In this week's episode we talk about how we work though this, the verses that have helped us, the books and resources that help, and more. Let us know your thoughts after! In this episode REMIX we pull out of our archives one of our first episodes in which Amber shares about her fears (and possible heart attack) surrounding her first experience in a New Age bookshop and we address the very blurry lines between things we experienced growing up in the church and things we were told were evil by the church. Have you ever thought about how similar some of these things like manifesting and prayer, prophecy conferences and tarot readers, speaking in tongues and channeling, laying on hands and energy healers are? Join us as we question everything in this week's episode. In this week's episode, we tackle an instagram voted on topic which is the problem of spiritual bypassing in reguards to mental health both in the western evangelical church AND in the new age spiritual communities which so many of us who deconstruct find ourselves among. It can be challenging to feel like we are coming up against stigma and judgement no matter where we go and when Becka brought this topic up on Instagram it was unanimously voted on as a topic to talk more about. So in this episode we share about Spiritual Bypassing, what it is, what it looks like, and the truth of mental health self care. We'd love to hear your thoughts. In this week's BONUS episode (which Becka has decided is her new favorite of all of season 3!) Amber brings up the topic of vanity and pride and how sometimes she struggles with the blooming confidence she is experiencing as she reclaims her sense of self after growing up in purity culture in the evangelical church of the 90's and 2000's. This unscripted chit chat style episode invites you into what it's like to just sit around with us and hash out a topic. We hope you love the silly twists and turns as we help each other navigate the sticky feelings of "is this cringe?" "is this okay?" and "why is this an issue for me!?" *TW* This episode is a response episode to the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade. In it we openly discuss 18+ topics such as abortion, reproductive rights, sex, the sanctity of life and use a lot of adult language. Listener discretion is advised. Amber and Becka both ended up on the pro-choice side of the Roe v. Wade discussion but how we got there was two very different paths. For anyone in the midst of their own deconstruction, faith transition or even just reclamation of their personal sovereignty, we hope that hearing our candid discussion after the ruling helps you feel less alone and perhaps inspires you to think outside your own box, take action where needed, and have grace for more people than you did before. We loved hearing your responses to the conversation and the responses formed the most beautiful spectrum of experience. When you go through a faith transition like deconstruction, one of the most universally unsettling experiences that no one talks about is when you lose jargon that at one point was so comforting to you. What do you say when you can't say those things anymore? Why are those phrases so engrained in us? Why do they make us feel better? And what do we do and say now? Join us as Becka and Amber share about navigating these strange shifts and share what helps them make sense of it all and move forward to find new ways of expressing care and concern. We're back with a special conversation you asked us for- How do we navigate modesty and sex positivity in parenting? For those of us that are reclaiming our own spiritual and sexual autonomy after a deconstruction or faith transition it can feel overwhelming trying to parent young people through a stage of life we don't have a model of parenting for or that we are just now figuring out for ourselves since we were not allowed to when we were younger. If you've felt the tension of this situation, we hope that this conversation makes you feel less alone and leaves you with a feeling of hope that you're already doing a great job just by caring about getting better at this. BONUS EPISODE: In this week's bonus episode, we share a conversation we had one day about our experiences wrestling with the concept of absolute truth. Certainty is such a foundational aspect of the faith we both have transitioned from and it can feel very shaky and unsettling to navigate the spaces left when we remove certainty from our spiritual experience and settle into new ways of thinking and feeling. In this BONUS episode we tackle a common struggle: how to unpack all the black and white thinking we were trained into during our time growing up in the church and how dangerous that type of thinking can be towards our communities, our relationships, and to ourselves. *TW* We bring up the topic of reproductive rights and abortion as it relates to black and white thinking In this episode Amber shares how this has been a big part of her journey recently and how she's found old black and white mentalities popping up in her life and the work she is doing to heal and reclaim shades of gray and nuance in the way she views herself and the world around her. We share some of the resources that have helped both of us do the inner work and spot the sneaky ways this old programming pops up. Some of those recourses mentioned include: The Happy Whole Way account on instagram - @happywholeway Lacey Phillips and To Be Magnetic - www.tobemagnetic.com The book, The Dark Side of the Light Chasers by Debbie Ford Your hosts: Amber Humphries @amberhumphries Becka Robinson @beckarobinson Send us your thoughts, questions, comments to www.askptw.com Follow us on IG @pronetowonderco If you enjoyed this episode please share it with a friend, post your favorite quotes and tag us on social or leave a positive review so others who are on their own journey of deconstruction and faith transitions can find us. Today, we are pulling back the curtain an experience many of us deal with during and after faith transitions and that is navigating overwhelming feelings of doubt and grief. Did we make a mistake? Did we ruin our lives? Are we going straight to hell? How do we navigate missing something that we know isn't healthy or aligned for us right now? Are these feelings normal or a red flag? If you've struggled with these during your deconstruction, listen in as Amber shares how she's feeling after her last Sunday on staff for music ministry and Becka shares her experience of overcoming the awkward transition to living in a completely different way than she was used to. This is an 18+ conversation that is NSFW In this week's episode, we continue in our "Reclaiming Sex" series by jumping into navigating purity culture when you're in a couple. What are the lifelong struggles that came from the messaging and how do they affect us in partnerships? In this 18+ episode, we tackle an important question sent in from a listener about how do we even begin to explore and reclaim our sexuality when we are single or deconstructing at a different pace from our current partner? This topic is so important to us because for anyone who grew up in a shame-based belief system around sexuality, it can be very scary to begin to break those thought patterns and learn how to express yourself in a sex-positive way. Amber shares how she is doing during her first Christmas season that feels different, and both hosts share about the core values of the season that feel the most important to them that they are focusing on this holiday season. If you have been dealing with sadness or grief around Christmas and how to celebrate it when you feel disconnected from the nativity story or rituals of your childhood, we hope this episode is a light for you to begin navigating your way through and to give you hope that you can find deeply beautiful ways to celebrate that make you excited for the season! In this week's episode, we are talking about the elephant in the room: going home for the holidays. In every deconstruction community we are in and in our own coaching practices we hear it almost unanimously that people are nervous, stressed out, and feeling sadness about the impending family time over the holiday season. We knew we wanted to talk about this because it's been true for each of us, it is something we have found ways to heal but also that we still can struggle with. We hope this conversation gives you permission to enjoy your holidays, set boundaries, and navigate the messy situations that might arise. Just remember now matter what, you're going to be okay, you WILL find ways to make the holidays beautiful and special for yourself through trial and error, and you have people who understand what you're going through right here in this little podcast family. In this week's COFFEE CHAT episode, in which we share a question or comment from one of you and then have a casual round table conversation about it, we are talking about MODESTY. We share a question from a listener about modesty and how our deconstruction of modesty has or has not changed our relationship to our bodies. What an incredible question! We ran the gamut talking through this one because modesty is such a wide topic that covers more than just bodies and clothing (pun intended!) In this episode... How have our journeys deconstructing from the American Christian idea of modesty impacted our relationships to our bodies? Welcome to SEASON TWO! In our second season we are taking you on a journey of wondering. We asked ourselves the question of "What next?" As we grow spiritually and in maturity and as we go through a deconstruction there's inevitably a point where things shift from deconstructing to reconstructing but what happens when you don't have the community or safety to ask questions about all the things that are new and curious to you? In season two we'll be taking you along into curious conversations about the big topics that came up for us in our journeys. Starting with... MENTAL HEALTH. TW: conversation on mental health struggles, depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. In honor of World Mental Health Day we are so excited to bring you this conversation about mental health and therapy and why it is so challenging to realize when we need help. What lingering voices from the past (or maybe still present in your life) might be giving us confusing messages about therapy and how do we find truth for ourselves in the midst of that? How did each of your three hosts reconstruct their thoughts on therapy and what have we learned? We had the most lovely and emotionally raw conversation with Kristi Rowles, a practicing therapist informed by enneagram and with her own experience of deconstruction and mental health. Listen in and let us know your thoughts, stories and wonderings as well! In this episode... Dealing with the lingering stigma of therapy in religious communities Bible verses that can cause confusion about mental health Shame and mental health The morality of feelings Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) Therapy and Privilege (and some helpful options for anyone with less access) Sovereignty and autonomy in therapy How binary belief structures can be so toxic to our mental health How hard it can be to recognize the signs of a mental health issue Practices to check in with ourselves on our mental health Feeling guilty about feeling joy during reconstruction Links from the episode... Vanessa, Amber, and Becka bring the light back in with a conversation on what happens AFTER the dark night of the soul, a spiritual awakening, or deconstruction. In the last episode of season one, we share about the shift that happened in each of our journeys where we felt the pull to begin to sort through the pieces, clean up the mess, and begin to rebuild and move forward. Reconstruction can feel daunting but it is such a beautiful and hope-filled part of the cycle. Listen in to hear our tips for anyone who is at the same stage, not who you used to be but not quite sure what to do next. Amber shares some insights from recent life coaching sessions and her where she's at in her own reconstruction. Vanessa shares how we are co-creators of our life and how stepping into that role takes the pressure off of having to do everything perfectly. Becka shares how nature became her reconstruction mentor teaching her the beautiful impermanence of things and to stop fearing the cycles of life, death, and transformation. In this week's episode, the second to last episode of Season One, we wonder about GRIEF and how it shows up in our journeys of deconstruction, spiritual awakening, and growth. As each of the three of us co-hosts have had such different experiences and are at such different stages of this process from fully stepped away from the church to still involved weekly, from trauma to a gentle moving away, we've each seen grief show up in various ways and have had to reckon with it in our lives. Grief during this process can be such an odd emotion to navigate. You might feel shame for feeilng it at all. Or you may feel as if you deserve it for asking questions. Or maybe it blindsided you and you can't figure out how to feel good again. If you've ever felt sad, alone, disenchanted, frustrated, or angry as you've navigated the waters of deconstruction and reconstruction, we hope this conversations makes you feel less crazy, less alone, and more hopeful that there's light on the other side! Listener parental warning: We talk about a popular Christmas character that a lot of us believe in as children that most people release belief in as we grow older so if you are listening in a space where children who still believe in this holiday figure could hear, you might want to pop in some earbuds or wait till later to listen. In this week's special episode, we have a conversation around parenting while deconstructing or going through a spiritual awakening, or even just while questioning the beliefs you were raised with. How do we give our kids a sense of safety and understanding when we feel like we don't concretely know the answers ourselves? It can be really nerve wracking and feel like you're walking through the dark with a blindfold, but it can also be healing and a beautiful opportunity to see what happens when we create the space for wonder. This is our first sponsored episode and we are so excited to introduce you to our friends at Wonderness Co. They create themed, printable, imaginative adventure kits for kids aged 4-8. They give us a screen-free connection opportunity without all the work of trying to be a perfect Pinterest mom because all the supplies you need come in the kit ready to go! We had to tell you about them during this parenting episode because they are such a cool concept and unlike other family togetherness kits, these don't create a mess or tons of work for the parents. Hooray! Check them out at www.wondernessco.com and use the code PRONETOWONDER for 10% off your order! Please come let us know your thoughts on the episode on Instagram @pronetowonderco and share with a friend who wonders about these same things! In this week's episode, Amber proposes the question of "Can someone deconstruct too much?" and "How far is too far before it just becomes more selfish than self care?" We talk about what that can look like, the question of, "What is the actual problem here, me or the environment I'm in?" as well as talking about whether it's a good idea or a bad idea to have permission to go out and try everything and how hard it is to raise kids who are empowered to ask questions. It's an episode that bounces around as we chat and we hope you find some solace in knowing that if you wonder about these things you aren't alone! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
In this episode, Becka vulnerably shares her deconstruction origin story of growing up in the church, being in leadership and then on staff for music ministry while navigating an affair and a divorce. She shares about the spiritual abuse she encountered and the abandonment she felt, how it affected her in her spiritual journey, and how she's navigated the time since then finding her own new path and rising stronger. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
**SPECIAL EXTENDED EPISIODE** The Prone to Wonder girls spent a weekend together in Tampa and decided to record a live episode. In this episode we each share how we've personally navigated setting boundaries with the people in our lives as we've deconstructed, worked on ourselves, and evolved as women. We discuss different types of boundaries both internal and external, how hard it can be to set them, the importance of boundaries and how to shift them alongside the shifts in your own journey. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
In this week's episode we pose the question of, "Is religious trauma real?" And if it is, what is it? Do we have it? And could we have caused it? We share about our own experiences of recognizing trauma, how we identify it, and why we think it might not be as scary to identify as it might sound. If you've ever wondered if what you feel is "religious trauma" or if you've ever wondered if everyone is just being too sensitive, we invite you to come wonder about this topic with us! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
In this episode, Amber shares about her fears (and possible heart attack) surrounding her first experience in a New Age bookshop and we address the very blurry lines between things we experienced growing up in the church and things we were told were evil by the church. Have you ever thought about how similar some of these things like manifesting and prayer, prophecy conferences and tarot readers, speaking in tongues and channeling, laying on hands and energy healers are? Join us as we question everything in this week's episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
We may not all love the name "deconstructing" but we did want to take an episode to define what WE mean by deconstructing. Our hope in this episode is to expand (always) the perspective on what deconstructing is, and give permission to make deconstructing more than simply "leaving a religious structure". --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
In this episode we explore how uncertain (and even uncomfortable) expanding beyond old beliefs can be. Our conversations ranges from how we sit in that discomfort, what might ground us (if it's no longer some old doctrine or dogma) and how to allow for expansion. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
In this episode we explore what role anger plays in the deconstruction process, and if there's a wrong way to deconstruct. We ask some deep questions around WHY we might each have specific fears in regards to HOW we deconstruct and where those fears come from. This is one of those episodes where the three of us differ greatly, but still respect and hold space for the mess. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
In this episode we explore how we are finding freedom from purity culture. The conversation ranges from the crushes we had growing up, the ways we are still rooting our purity culture remnants in our lives and how we are finding freedom and reclaiming sex as something that belongs to us. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prone-to-wonder/message
