Have you listened to the FULL EPISODE yet?"Social justice and activism really starts in your own house. What you do in the privacy of your own homes shows up in the public spaces. There's a difference between raising good people and raising pro-justice kids who are the activists, the agitators, the ones who are proactive and standing in the gap for other people." - Dr. Traci BaxleyDr. Traci Baxley brings her profound insights into parenting and social justice, addressing the complex challenges of raising conscious children in today's world. With remarkable candor, she emphasizes that the journey is inherently messy and there's no single correct path. Drawing from her extensive experience in education and parenting, Baxley challenges the conventional notion that simply raising "good people" is enough, instead advocating for a more proactive approach to cultivating social awareness in children. In this deeply moving conversation, Baxley addresses the personal costs and transformational rewards of engaging in anti-racist work and social justice education. She shares practical wisdom about navigating the discomfort of growth, the importance of authentic engagement versus performative activism, and how parents can create meaningful change starting within their own homes. Her approach emphasizes the power of listening, learning, and allowing marginalized voices to lead while using one's platform to support and amplify these essential conversations.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter!

We've all heard (or experienced) the horror stories around cyber bullying, the consequences of sexting, or kids accidentally blowing through thousands of dollars on a popular video game. And as dads, contemplating how (and when) to grant our kids access to certain types of technology can be overwhelming. But even beyond which social media accounts or how much screen time we allow, it's imperative that they understand privacy. It's a big, loaded word, and thankfully there are experts like Marc Groman who can help us understand the important benefits of protecting one's privacy... and the very real threats when we don't. Listen to the end for a hilarious Father's Day-themed quiz! [This is part 1 of a 2 part episode.]Episode 87 of Modern Dadhood kicks off with some shared stories between Marc and Adam about their kids' struggles with listening, and a great recommendation from Marc on how to entice your kids to be self-accountable. The conversation transitions to privacy and technology when Adam asks Marc about how he intends to address privacy protection when his twin five-year-olds are old enough to start really interacting with internet enabled devices. Spoiler alert: neither dad has a great plan! The guys welcome privacy professional Marc Groman into the conversation. Among many other privacy-related jobs, credentials, and accolades, Marc was the first chief privacy officer of the US Federal Trade Commission, and he served in the Obama administration as chair of the Federal Privacy Council and Senior Advisor for Privacy in the White House. Marc and his husband David Reitman have a 17 year old son who they no longer monitor on social media, and trust that he has a good understanding of privacy-related issues! The conversation covers a LOT of ground, including:•  Kids' inability to perceive potential consequences of their actions•  Why smartphones should not be called "phones" at all.•  How social platforms stoke FOMO which is very harmful to kids•  The question that's far more important than "what's the right amount of screen time?"•  What you post is permanent•  The vital importance of being familiar with the platforms and games your kids are using•  And more!If you've made it this far, you're in for a treat: Marc has cooked up some Father's Day themed trivia!Subscribe to Modern Dadhood to be alerted when Part 2 of this episode drops on Friday 7/6.Links:Their Own Devices (Marc's phenomenal podcast)Marc @ Family Online Safety InstituteRed Vault AudioCaspar BabypantsSpencer AlbeeStuffed Animal

It can be really nerve wracking and feel like you're walking through the dark with a blindfold, but it can also be healing and a beautiful opportunity to see what happens when we create the space for wonder. Kaity's Way (0:00:00)Raising teenagers is difficult in many ways... but when your teenager starts dating... that's when it's especially hard to be a parent. It's critical that we teach them how to love and respect whomever they may date, because there are too many kids being abused in relationships. Millions of teens are affected by teen dating violence every year... 1 in 11 girls and 1 in 15 boys reported dating abuse within the last year. Our next guest lost her own daughter Kaity to dating violence. Her loss inspired her to organize Kaity's Way, a non-profit organization that focuses on bringing awareness to teen dating violence. She joins us to discuss this as well as the importance of building healthy relationships.  Lessons of the Lost (0:17:09)For many of us, we feel the greatest purpose in life when we're serving others, chasing our dreams, or surrounded by loved ones. But there are some moments when we all feel lost. And, I'm not talking about the kind of lost you feel when you wander off a trail or when you're driving and the GPS stops working. I'm talking about feeling emotionally lost in life. Joining us today is Dr. Scott Hammond, author of “Lessons of the Lost: Finding Hope and Resilience in Work, Life, and the Wilderness.” He's here to teach us about how to recover from being emotionally lost.  Lindsay Stirling (0:34:03)Richie and Lisa are joined be recording artist, Youtuber, author, and self-described "pixie violinist" Lindsay Stirling to talk about her path to success and about she finds most important.  New Year, New Wardrobe (0:50:30)“New Year, new me” is what many of us are thinking this time of the year. But, it's not only a new year... it's a new decade! And there's no better way to start the next 10 years then with a new wardrobe that reflects our personality and allows us to truly express ourselves. All of the colors, changing fashions, and options can seem overwhelming. So to break down how to discover and cultivate our new look, we invited personal stylist Joseph Rosenfeld to join us on the show today.  Combatting Self-Consciousness (1:07:26)You went through it, now your kids are going through it, and you just don't know how to combat it. Self-consciousness is a natural part of growing up, but it often seems like the only part of being a teenager. So how can we combat it? Is there a way to stop it before it starts? Rhonda Martin is a Diplomat in Anxiety Disorders and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. With so many of our kids, and even us, struggling with being overly self-conscious, we thought she would be the perfect person to come to our rescue and talk about this important issue.  Weekend Review (1:26:38)Lisa and Richie talk about the best movies to make time for this weekend, as well as the must-attend events happening all over the country.

Marnie Barranco – Conscious Parents, Conscious KidsAired Monday, November 25, 2019 at 12:00 PM PST / 3:00 PM ESTIt’s funny to me to find myself in a roll I did not think would be a part of my life in this lifetime. I thought parenting was something that had passed me by and truthfully I had never really felt like I missed something.I was happy with the life I had chosen and where it had all taken me.It was then I met a man who is kind and adds to my life in ways I could not imagine. The only caveat is he has a teenager that still lives at home.Who knew she would be such a gift. And I am so grateful for all she teaches me.Recently I found myself being triggered by things she was doing or not doing. And then I found myself acting more like my dad, a control freak of magnitude.I knew this wasn’t creating greater and yet I had the hardest time stopping because I was taught parents are supposed to have the answers and that we show we care through control.Well I don’t know about you, but I found out that doesn’t really work out that well.I have my points of view, she goes into resistance and justifies her points of view and the whole household is unhappy. What if there was another way? What if it all was just an interesting point of view? What if it really wasn’t worth the fight to be right and there was a way we could all win and nobody has to lose? When I am willing to be in question, a whole new world of possibilities opens for all of us.Would it be fun for you to listen to the radio show on Conscious Parents, Conscious Kids with Marnie Barranco and I, Monday November 25th?If you have kids or are a kid this is one you won’t want to miss.

As eco-conscious parents, we consistently lead by example on the ‘big’ actions (reducing air travel, cooking plant-based meals) as well as on the small stuff, too (repurposing water, line-drying clothes). We assume that – because our kids are always observing our behavior – they’ll naturally pick up on our low-waste, environmental ideals. The Gift of Chaos in BusinessAired Monday, 27 May 2019, 4:00 PM ETOn our society we are used to have things more or less order. In many areas, order makes our lives easier and more efficient – like having things in order at home or in the office gives us more ease and clarity, or when we park outside, it is way easier to park if parking place has some order then if we all would park chaotically…on many places order is useful. And there are also places, where we tend to establish the order where it is not needed. More than this, many times with trying or even forcing to put things in order, we are taking away limitless possibilities and putting us into some limited space. And, usually we are even not aware, that we are doing that. Those are the points that are limiting our business. When we recognise them, and allow to have chaos instead of order, those can be turning points that can be the greatest gift to our business. Are your ready to discover with us the gift that chaos can be for your business?Hosts Bios:After completing social work studies in Vienna, Doris Schachenhofer worked with children, homeless people, delinquent teenagers and prisoners transitioning back into the real world. “I like to focus with the family on how we are relating to ourselves, each other, and life’s circumstances. And inside that way of relating, how are we relating physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually? ” Ashley Lee (16:00-16:23) Do you ever enter an environment and immediately feel its negativity and wonder if there’s anything you can do about it? We’re all born as feeling beings. As infants we instinctively used feelings and emotions to get our needs met. We all possess the ability to be empathic in varying degrees. We can often feel the positive or negative energy when we enter a room or when we encounter another person. According to Ashley Lee, by being conscious of what we are encountering, we can take steps to change it. Ashley Lee supports people in connecting them to their natural state, which is love. Ashley is the CEO for Ashley Lee Healing and Center for Conscious Kids. She works to transform the lives of highly sensitive kids and adults by uncovering the root causes of pain and sensitivities while using Advanced Energy Healing and Self Empowerment Tools. “It’s never what was said, it’s what was heard. None of us have the same perceptions.”  -Diane Forster (36:16-36:25) Many highly sensitive people experience the world in a multi-sensory way. They see things a little deeper, a little broader, a little more expanded than the rest of us. They feel more intensely. Their whole immune system and nervous system sings with emotions. Until they learn how to harness this gift, they may feel like they can’t get away from them or know how to navigate them. Many of these individuals end up with illnesses such as autoimmune diseases, allergies, and asthma because they are highly sensitive to the world around them. There are four root causes of physical pain and illness. Physical Emotional Mental Spiritual The root of an individual’s pain or illness could be any combination of these four. Ashley looks for the primary cause so that she can unravel it and change its energetic flow pattern to free the body so that the person feels better physically. When a person starts to clear these discordances in their energetic past, present, and future, they start to clear the pathways through which the energies flow. Their bodies then feel better, and when their bodies feel better they are less sensitive to physical discomfort and pain. When they’re free from pain, the energy flows so that they think more clearly, emote more clearly, and have the ability to live from their true nature. When overwhelmed by trauma, illnesses, and life experience, it’s impossible to live from, and even know your true nature. Being blocked, in pain, and ill can be a person’s “normal” state for so much of their life. When we experience a negative environment, we can do many things to master that environment. When identifying and overcoming negative environments, it is so important to learn how to navigate conflict resolution. The most effective way to resolve conflict is simply acknowledging that it exists. Conflict is essentially judgement towards yourself or someone else. When you choose to acknowledge the judgment, you can master it by saying, “I am choosing to change the way I see this.” In doing so, we let go of our judgments. It can feel more difficult to let go of the judgments that others have towards us. We tend to believe that if another person has a judgment towards us we have to wait for them to change that judgment for us to be free from it. But we don’t even have to ask the other person to change their judgment. We can choose to step into a realm of compassion and let go of the judgment. We get very clear when we drop the judgments of ourselves and/or others. It sets us in a space of love and compassion, even if it is a nasty judgment coming our way. These are ways we can support each other in relating better and more deeply. And when we have better relationships, we become healthier physically. Our heart rate drops, our blood pressure comes down, our breathing deepens and becomes more regular, our hormones balance, our neurotransmitters balance. When they balance, we can think more clearly, we can sleep better, and we can function and process things much easier. A lot of times when we let go of our judgments, we recognize through compassion that it’s not about us. It’s really not.”     Ashley Lee (35:53-36:01)   Ashley Lee has a family mentoring program especially for families with highly sensitive children. It can be challenging for parents to understand what their child is experiencing, what they’re perceiving, or why they do the things they do. Ashley Lee delves into the deeper root causes to understand what’s happening and to bring harmony to the family. You can find out more through her Family Mentoring course which you can find on AshleyLeeHealing.com under courses. Your emotions and feelings are so powerful. Becoming more aware of them, and allowing yourself to experience them fully can be so empowering. Have you spent your life allowing the experiences of the past to affect your physical, spiritual, mental, or emotional being? TODAY is the day to start unraveling your pain, clearing the path for energy, and becoming acquainted with your true self! Raising Conscious Kids: The New Parenting Paradigm With Neil Strauss #194

This is a show about parenting, featuring not only one of my all-time favorite authors but also one of the best parents I’ve ever watched in action. When he wants to learn about, or write about something meaningful to him, he becomes quite literally obsessed, and at this stage in his life, it’s all about becoming the best father he can possibly be. Neil Strauss’s books are not only educational, hilarious, emotionally touching, but also quite addictive. Over the many years I’ve been reading them, they’ve made me laugh, cry, and change my life for the better – and no matter what he writes about, I can’t put his books down until I’ve greedily inhaled every single word. Neil co-wrote some of the best biographies of our time, but he’s best known for The Game, which follows his journey infiltrating the pickup artist subculture and learning how to be one. This segued into teaching other guys pickup artistry, which had its ups and its downs, ultimately culminating in a sequel of sorts called The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships. At the time, The Truth seemed like a conclusive end to Neil’s hero’s journey, in which he lost his love and then won it back. But now, a few years later, we can see that the story isn’t over. Our complex relationships with relationships can’t be neatly wrapped up in a Campbellian journey, and this is a truth that I think we all come to realize eventually. So today, Neil shares what this next step of his journey looks like: the end of a marriage, the beginning of a non-romantic relationship with the mother of his child, the new paradigm of conscious parenting, and dating while he navigates the complexities of it all. Since Neil has yet to write a book on parenting, I was thrilled to be able to sit down and have him share all he has learned so far about being the best dad he can be.   Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why the key to changing the world is healthy parenting Maintaining a great relationship with the other parent of your child, even when the romantic relationships ends A big myth about relationships Why “staying together for the kids” is a backwards plan that doesn’t produce healthy, loving role models Developing a mature relationship with monogamy How The Truth changed Luke’s life A sure way to kill any romantic relationship: turning your partner into a parent The mistakes that most parents make – and the ones that we can avoid The moment Neil learned that he was going to have a kid (also the first time he ever hoped a pregnancy test would come back positive) The books and experts that have taught Neil the most about parenting Why Neil keeps a diary for his son How a parent can create boundaries and not get enmeshed with their child, while still being loving and intimate with them You’re not always going to be your kid’s friend – and that’s okay! How to avoid teaching your children to medicate their emotions The Continuum Concept & parenting The roles that people take on in dysfunctional families Why conscious parenting is the most important thing you can do in your life Neil’s new podcast, To Live and Die in LA, about the disappearance of aspiring actress Adea Shabani   More about this episode. Ep 22: Core Values, Ohana and Keystone Habits With Kalika Yap

I’m excited to share this episode #22 with Kalika Yap, a serial entrepreneur, inventor, intentional mother, and business leader. She’s received tremendous recognition for her accomplishments, including being honored by the Anti-Defamation League, serving as a panelist with Magic Johnson on an Urban Economic Forum hosted by the Obama White House, and currently leading as the President of Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) Los Angeles Chapter. Kalika is from more humble beginnings. She came from a big family born in the Philippines in the time of Martial Law that then moved to a low income community in Hawaii. Growing up, she had strong influences from her mother who is a teacher and her father who is an entrepreneur. Along with her husband, she now imparts these family influences or “Ohana” and a focus on “Core Values”  to her two daughters, 10 and 8 years old. She's currently starting a company with her daughters, prompted by a school project, called Conscious Kids, a mindfulness resource for children. Believing that children have eyes all around and a unique perspective, she engages her daughters in defining the core values of their business and encourages them to explore their creativity. Her current mission, through her branded commerce start-up, Orange and Bergamot, is to help 1 million businesses succeed and in turn create 1 million jobs by developing amazing brands. She shares about what helps her achieve ambitious goals like these while being present for her family: reaching out to others, being part of a tribe, being willing to ask for help, and developing “Keystone Habits,” like meditation. Ultimately, she believes that the destination is the journey, and that the purpose of her life is to find joy and happiness while serving others. We covered a lot of ground in this interview and I felt like I filled my E.P.I.C. Life Toolkit with powerful strategies: to focus on values, develop keystone habits, and consciously choose a life of service. I left the conversation inspired by Kalika to pursue our entrepreneurial dreams and empower other women to do the same, all while being a present and intentional parent. This Week’s "Opportunity for Growth": Embrace meditation as a “Keystone Habit” and see how it can change your life Topics discussed in this episode: How Kalika's Relationship with her Mom grew stronger as she had kids of her own The Core Values in Kalika’s home and her businesses Conscious Kids, a company she is starting with her children, that gives them an opportunity to explore their core values and creativity Her bold mission to help 1 million businesses succeed The problem of women feeling guilty for wanting to positively make an impact and not being willing to promote themselves “Keystone Habits” that lead to other essential habits Kalika’s love of reading and learning and the books she thinks will most help us live our E.P.I.C. lives Look at life as a whole map or journey, and don’t judge it by days Resources mentioned in this episode: Consciouskidsco.com Entrepreneurs' Organization Citrus Studios Dr. Marshall Goldsmith Simon Sinek TED Talk on the Golden Circle Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It by Christopher Voss and Tahl Raz Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People by Vanessa Van Edwards Mavens Media Group Podcast Movement  She Podcasts Facebook Group Transcendental Meditation Oprah & Deepak’s Meditation Series Calm: Meditation App Vedic Meditation Unplug Meditation Meditation Short Courses at UCLA Announcements If you haven’t yet visited the website, head over to www.mothersquest.com to explore some of the ways you can get more connected. Before I jump into today’s topic I have some super, duper amazing news that I can’t wait to share with you. Self Sufficiency in the Suburbs is OPEN and I couldn’t be more excited. Self Sufficiency in the Suburbs is a members’ only club that will show you how to move towards a simpler, more sustainable way of living, one tiny step at a time, and for a limited time you can test it out now for just $1! Over the next few weeks on the podcast I’m going to take a look at how we can best nurture our kids to develop a love and respect for our environment. Regardless of whether or not you have young children yourself, no doubt there are kids in your life – perhaps nieces or nephews, grandchildren, students if you’re a teacher or carer of any sort, patients if you’re in the health profession, or maybe you just see your friend’s children from time to time. Regardless of your relationship to the children in your life, I’d love you to keep these points in mind as you interact with them. In most cases, what I’m recommending to help nurture an eco-consciousness in children has many other benefits as well. In this episode I’ll share four ways you can nurture eco conscious kids, and I’ll cover why it’s important that we foster sustainability values in the children in our lives.

Jean Bell is the co-founder of Conscious Kids Network along with Ty Andrews, and is devoted to creating metaphysical and fun filled media entertainment for youths of all ages. She is a New Thought motivator and licensed Science of Mind practitioner and resides in Stone Mountain, Georgia.   Her book, Brookie's Adventure is a fun-filled and prancing story of a child's exploration through nature and her own heart to find where God lives.  Through Brookie's loving and diverse family and the wonderful Mr. Buzz Bumble Bee, Sarah Rabbit, and the wise old fish Bruno Trout, Brookie finds her answer through the love and sharing of her new friends and the magic and wonder of nature! Jean has two goddaughters who were both inspirational muses in writing Brookie's Adventure, and an adult son who adopted her.       Jean has served in the United States Army for 10 years, and her last duty assignment was that of Drill Sergeant.  Upon leaving the Army, Jean moved to Germany and her first civilian job was a kindergarten teacher.  It was during this time she discovered unconditional love lives in the smiles and hugs of every child.   Excerpt from the book:  “Sarah, all the kids at school say they found God. Some of them say they found Jesus, and Jesus is God. I told them that Jesus Rodriquez is not God, he's our dentist, and they gave me a strange look. Anyway, do I have to find God, and if so, where should I look?” Order the book: http://www.consciouskidsnetwork.com
