Smells like the commodification of teen spirit! In this episode, we welcome beloved friend of the pod and returning guest Marshall Watson (he/him) to talk all about Nirvana and the grunge culture of the 90s.Together, Marcelle, Hannah, and Marshall dig into the anti-establishment ethos of Nirvana, the grunge genre as an act of musical resistance, and what happens once counter-culture becomes mainstream. To do this, they've obviously gotta dig into Adorno and Horkheimer's theory of the culture industry (and talk a little bit about Reagan, which they only do when Marshall is here…).If your young adult years were soundtracked to Nevermind or you just love railing against the mainstream, you're going to dig this episode.Related listening:Golden Girls x Sex Positivity with Marshall WatsonThe Craft x Feminist RageWorks Cited:Adorno, Theodore, and Max Horkheimer. 2019. “The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception,” in Philosophers on Film from Bergson to Badiou: A Critical Reader, ed. “Sex-positive” is a term that gets used a lot these days, but it doesn't always mean the same thing to everyone. Sometimes it's about sexual openness or enthusiasm, other times it's about respect for sexual diversity, and sometimes it's even used in coercive ways. In this episode, we explore what sex-positivity actually is, and what it isn't. I am joined once again by Dr. Carol Queen, the staff sexologist, Company Historian, and Curator of the Antique Vibrator Museum at Good Vibrations. A noted cultural sexologist whose work has been widely published, she’s written and edited several books, including The Sex & Pleasure Book: Good Vibrations Guide to Great Sex for Everyone. Some of the specific topics we explore in this episode include: What are the core features of sex-positivity? What are some common usages of the term that miss the mark? Why is it important to separate sex-positivity from things like sexual behavior, frequency, and identity? How can you recognize when sex-positivity is being used coercively rather than ethically? How can you apply sex-positive values in everyday life? You can click here to learn more about Dr. Carol Queen. Got a sex question? After listening to the Hookup of the Week, the two wax nostalgic for their younger years, hooking up in bars. They are then joined by comedian, writer, and actor Jay Jurden, whose debut television special, “Yes, Ma'am,” is now streaming on Hulu. Jay discusses the journey to getting “Yes, Ma'am” on screen, why it was important for the special to be so sex-positive, the necessity of stand-up for marginalized audiences, the new hour he is taking on his “Nothing Special" tour, his 14-year relationship with his now husband, identifying as bisexual, his former career as a personal trainer, his possible future on Broadway, and his deep, queer connection to Marvel's X-Men. To cap off the episode, Jay helps Brian and Judson respond to a Go Ask Your Dad question from a listener who is hurt after his partner declines his request for sex, only to go and have a repeat hookup with someone else. We've got company!! This week on Bad Queers, we get a little steamy and a lot educational with The Vagina Based Collective, lead by Feignix and Papi, known as “The Sinners” behind a movement that's redefining shameless living, especially in the bedroom. We talk queer sex education, how intimacy evolves in long-term relationships, and what it really means to unlearn shame while exploring kink, toys, and identity. Plus, Kris teaches us about albutophilia (yes, bath time counts) and Shana breaks down trixic identity for our Queer Urban Dictionary. Stay for Bad Queer Opinions — where we talk flirting, fascism, and the myth of the gold star lesbian.Shoutouts: Kris: Blaque/Out Magazine - Blaque/OUT Magazine, founded by Tamara Leigh, is a digital publication celebrating Black & Brown Queer and Trans culture while amplifying intersectional voices. We're back to Biola this week...kinda. Yes, Lacey Bond attended that school and was a "good" christian woman who followed all the rules. But while there, she was encouraged to ask questions and think creatively. This would prove lethal to her closely held fundamentalist, purity culture-soaked faith. It would eventually lead her to question everything and being exploring her identity as a woman and a sexual being. And through a series of life events, Lacey became a licensed Sex and Relationship coach, specializing in kink and non-traditional relationships. Want to know how someone goes from Biola dream student to complete sex-positivity? Lacey's story is one example. What if the thing you're most afraid of… is the very key to your healing? In this powerful, raw, and eye-opening episode of the Sex and Bacon podcast, Sarah sits down with Mistress Mia Payne—owner of Pain With Purpose—for a deep dive into the healing side of BDSM. Together, they explore how kink can be a therapeutic tool for trauma recovery, emotional release, empowerment, and reconnecting with the body after pain. From confronting abuse triggers in a collar to understanding the difference between consensual pain and trauma reenactment, this conversation peels back the layers on what it really means to reclaim power through intentional BDSM. Mia shares the science behind “cellular memory,” the unexpected link between kink and spirituality, and how her clients—many of them high-powered men and trauma survivors—have transformed their lives through her work. Whether you're kink-curious, healing from trauma, or just ready to ditch shame and explore your full self—this episode offers a radically safe space to reimagine what power, submission, and self-trust can look like.

She's the name on everybody's lips... but what does the rise of Bonnie Blue tell us about societal double standards? In a society that is increasingly sex positive, it seems that opinions differ amongst the A Gay And A NonGay community. Dan (representing the NonGays) feels like maybe this has all gone too far... whilst James (representing the Gays) believes that the outrage exposes some hypocrisy in society. Through-out the debate, both James and Dan grapple with their own opinions and shed light on the broader implications of sexual freedom and stigma. Over the course of its seven seasons, The Golden Girls had 25 million viewers and earned 68 Emmy nominations. Each of the girls, Rue McClanahan (Blanche Devereaux), Bea Arthur (Dorothy Zbornak), Estelle Getty (Sophia Petrillo) and Betty White (Rose Nylund) won Emmy's for their performances and more than three decades later, the show is still in syndication. All to say, the show was popular! Beloved friend of the pod and The Golden Girls super fan, Marshall Watson (he/him), joins Hannah and Marcelle on this episode to talk about the progressive politics of show, the social issues that were at the center of its stories, and the reason(s) many queer kids, Marshall included, found comedy, representation, and hope from "four old queens" in the late 80s and 90s.A note about content: This episode focuses on the HIV/AIDs crisis and the decades-long failure of the American government to provide funding, resources, and care to marginalized communities most impacted by the virus. Each episode looks at a unique object of study (something popular now or from back in the day) and over the course of three distinct segments, Hannah and Marcelle apply their academic expertise to the topic at hand.*Materialist Critique is, at its simplest possible level, a form of cultural critique – that is, scholarly engagement with a cultural text of some kind – that is interested in modes of production, moments of reception, and the historical and ideological contexts for both. Materialist critique is really interested in the question of why a particular cultural work or practice emerged at a particular moment. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
