Stop being a Pew Potato

Three friends bring this season to a close by talking about how to be more like Jesus. Ultimately to be more like Jesus, one has to become a servant. As the “Servant Song” so beautifully states, “Make me a servant, Just like Your Son. For He was a servant, Please make me one. Make me a servant, Do what You must do. Jesus tells His disciples that they can have joy and real peace because of Him. He says this when He’s telling them He will be taken and killed. Where is the peace if He won’t be around anymore? The resurrection and Jesus victory is our peace.

What do you think it means to dig deep as a Christian? It might not sound glamorous, but Jesus gives two things He wants people to do: hear Him and do what He says. One way we can serve that we might not think of as serving is forgiveness. In 2 Corinthians 2, Paul tells the Christians to forgive, comfort and make their love known for someone that has repented. How willing are you to forgive a friend or enemy? How can you actively show your love for them when they seek forgiveness?

Our Lord served regardless of challenges. He served with humility and grace. There are so many beautiful examples of that. One of those examples is found in the gospel of John where Jesus washed the disciples feet. In this episode Reagan McClenny breaks down the first seventeen verses of John 13. Before God calls Moses to return to Egypt and lead His people out of slavery and into the promised land, there’s some special things Exodus 2 says. God hears their prayers, remembers His covenant, sees them and knows them. When we go through hardship, we should know and remember that our God is the same God from Exodus.

Being comfortable can be a wonderful thing. Being spiritually comfortable, however, should scare us. It was once said that Jesus came to this earth to, “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” This week’s episode is challenging, but our hope is it becomes empowering.

The idea of being a soldier of Christ might be familiar to most Christians because of songs we know or scriptures like Ephesians 6 and the armor of God. In 2 Timothy 2:3-4, Paul tells Timothy to be a good soldier and not let “civilian pursuits” distract him as a soldier. There are so many “civilian pursuits” that can distract us, but let’s be good soldiers, support our fellow soldiers in battle and not let these earthly things take attention away from our service to God.

In Matthew 10 Jesus tells His disciples they should provide “even a cup of cold water” to other disciples. We live in a time where many, if not most, are struggling or discouraged in ways we can’t even understand. Serving each other in big ways and small ways is so important. Even if it’s as simple as a cup of cold water. We can do that by serving in kindness and by showing love to each other. Just like Jesus says and did. Discouragement. One emotion we have gotten accustomed to lately. So many events have prompted this emotion. COVID-19. Politics. Racism. Pandemic. All of which are disheartening. It can be helpful to remember even our heroes of faith felt this type of emotion. If you are going to talk to someone about Jesus—where would you start? For some of us deciding where to “start” is difficult. In the gospel of Mark Jesus heals a demon possessed man. Jesus's instructions to the man is the answer to our initial question. Mark 5:19 “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” You may not be a bible scholar or a preacher, but you can tell everyone you know how much the Lord has done for you.
