Tales From the Short Box is a weekly Wednesday podcast where we talk about the comics that came out last week. Join hosts Adam Sheehan, Cacey Crawford, Shaun Betit and RJ Veit as they talk about their favorite books from the week before.
The Tales from the Short Box podcast is a delightful and informative show that dives into the world of comic books. Although it may not specifically focus on X-Men, it still receives a stellar five-star rating from me. Each episode covers the comics released in the previous week, making it perfect for both new readers and long-time fans. It's like having a group of intelligent and passionate friends discussing their favorite books while I sit back and enjoy the conversation.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the hosts' knowledge and enthusiasm for comics. They bring a unique perspective to each episode, offering insightful commentary on a wide range of series. Whether you're well-versed in comics or just starting out, they always manage to cover something that will pique your interest. The recommendations they provide have introduced me to new series and ways of looking at comics that I would have never considered before.
Another great aspect is the positive vibe maintained throughout the show. Instead of dwelling on negative aspects or criticizing works, the hosts strive to accentuate the positives of the hobby. This approach creates a refreshing atmosphere where listeners can truly appreciate the wonders of comic books. It reminds me of those Sunday morning chats at my local comic book shop, where we would gather over donuts and coffee to discuss our shared passion.
Although it's hard to find any major faults with this podcast, some listeners might prefer more varied opinions or critical analysis on certain issues. The hosts tend to focus on what they love about each comic rather than delving into different viewpoints or providing more in-depth analysis. However, this isn't necessarily a negative aspect as it stays true to their aim of emphasizing positivity within the hobby.
In conclusion, The Tales from the Short Box podcast is an excellent source for discovering new comics and engaging in entertaining discussions about them. It captures that magical feeling of being in a comic book store surrounded by friends chatting about their favorite reads. With knowledgeable hosts, insightful commentary, and a positive atmosphere, this podcast has become a must-listen for comic book enthusiasts. I highly recommend giving it a try and be prepared to discover some amazing series you might have otherwise missed.
It is our last episode of the season and it is RJ's turn to pick a title from last year. He has brought us the wonderfully quirky and strange murder mystery, Hobtown Mystery Stories Vol 1: The Case of the Missing Men by Kris Bertin and Alexander Forbes. This was such a fun small town mystery with some really strange elements. Support Tales From The Short Box by joining our Patreon! patreon.com/BraveNewWorldsComics
It's Rj's turn to take us back to the year of his birth. It's 1994, and we are diving head first into Starman by James Robinson, Tony Harris and Wade Von GanBadger. It was a great year for comics, and this is a great pick. We follow a reluctant hero as he deals with the generational baggage of being the third Starman. It's Adam's turn to pick a book from last year, and he's bringing us Deviant by James Tynion IV and Joshua Hixon. This is a nailbiting ho-done-it that kept us all in suspense up to the very last panel. We all had a lot to say about this one, as it landed right in each of our wheelhouses for different reasons. It had a neo-noir style mystery at its core, it touched on serial killer lore, and also serves as a very important conversation about queer representation in the media. It's once again time for another hour of talking about last week's comics! We get into the important questions. Like how would Martian powers manifest in a gorilla body? It's Adam's turn to take us back to the year of his birth. And why not also go back to the birth of comics? It's 1985 and we're talking about The Dreamer by Will Eisner. This is the semi-autobiographical story of not only Eisner's rise as one of the best to ever do it, but the story of comics itself. It's a love letter to comics as told in one of the first “Graphic novels.” Support Tales From The Short Box by joining our Patreon! patreon.com/BraveNewWorldsComics

Get ready for a squealchy one! This week, we're peeling back the pages of Cacey's pick from 2024: THE RIBBON QUEEN by Garth Ennis, Jacen Burrows, & Dan Brown. It's our season finale! This week we're reading Shaun's foreign pick, Blacksad by Juan Diaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido. This book was originally published in French, and written by a Spanish creative team, but takes place in mid 20th century America. It's a refreshing perspective of mid-century politics all told from the perspective of cartoon animals. Tune in for some hard-boiled Antro-Noir. It is our last regular episode of LWC for the season. It's also an off week since last week was a 5th Wednesday. But there are some good specials and one-offs to talk about. This week it's Shaun's Domestic pick: Sleeper by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. This book has a little bit of everything. Superheroes, double agents, high stakes heists, even a bit of steamy romance. It's the kind of break-neck anti-hero story we've come to expect from this creative team, and it's one that we haven't read before (except RJ, who has read everything). This week we explore Adam's foreign comic pick: TREASURE OF THE BLACK SWAN by Paco Roca and Guillermo Corral, with translation by Andrea Rosenberg! This book was its own hidden treasure, a complete mystery until we dove in to find an incredible story. It's the true-to-life account of what happens when treasure hunters find loot in a lost wreckage, and how the origin country of that wreckage tries to reclaim it for cultural importance. This week we dive into Adam's TBR pile and find CONCRETE: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION by Paul Chadwick! This one subverted all of our expectations, taking what should've been a straightforward superhero comic and turning it on its head. Sure, there's a guy who got his brain swapped into a giant man made of rocks, but it's really a slice of life story about a man taking a tragedy and figuring out how to be fulfilled in his life. It chronicles his journey in and out of the lives of regular people, using his irregular situation to his advantage whenever possible. Despite all intents and purposes, this comic is as real as it gets, and we loved that about it... We also loved making an AGGRESSIVE amount of rock puns, so prepare yourself for that Support Tales From The Short Box by joining our Patreon! patreon.com/BraveNewWorldsComics

As a kiosk purveyor attempts to sell these expensive wishes one by one, we explore the lives of people desperate for a solution to their diverse and perplexing problems. We finally did it! We tackled one of our proverbial white whales: V FOR VENDETTA by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. It's such a precise, dense, frustrating, and prophetic treatise on the escalation of fascism in a failed state. Simultaneously, it's a gorgeous, hopeful, and inspiring manifesto for building a world based around love and community care from the ashes of the fallen authoritarian empire. In our discussion, we talk about the way this book (and the subsequent movie) have been warped in the public eye, how Moore's political praxis is front and center, and how we can take up V's cause in the fight against fascism today. Oh, and please, for the love of god, don't do LSD in a concentration camp...
It's once again time to talk about our favorite 7-day-old comics! This week we stare into the horrors of reality from inside the horror genre. This week we had the pleasure of welcoming the incomparable JACKSON LANZING as a guest host! You know Jackson from such works as NYX, Batman Beyond, The Outsiders, Joyride, Star Trek, and many many more phenomenal comics, but we brought him here to talk about a different phenomenal comic: TALE OF SAND by Jim Henson, Jerry Juhl, & drawn by Ramon K Perez! Around 1967 to 1968, Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl were workshopping a ton of long-form screenplays, the most fully-formed of which was Tale of Sand, an epic adventure of absurdity and self-discovery. When this screenplay was rejected by the movie studios in the late 70's, it was shelved and lost, only to be found again many years later. Luckily for us, Ramon K. Perez brought this surreal vision into a stunning reality, telling a vibrant and deeply meaningful story with almost no dialogue. Tune in tomorrow to hear us deep dive into this delightful odyssey with the equally delightful Jackson Lanzing! This week, it's time for Shaun's to-be-read pick, and BOY HOWDY, it's time for every trigger warning under the sun! That's right, it's STRAY BULLETS by David Lapham! RJ tried to warn us that this was one of the bleakest comics he'd ever read, and somehow this book still surprised us in the depths of depravity and despair it brought us to! That's not to say that it's not a beautiful work of spectacular storytelling and phenomenal art, it is all that and more! And it's using all that talent to aim straight for your heartstrings and then your jugular.
