Calvary Preschool has been serving countless families in our community for 50 years! This is such a huge milestone, and while CPS has already begun celebrating, we thought that there would be such value in publicly celebrating God's faithfulness to this important ministry. So today, Calvary Preschool's current Director, Susan Hixon, and one of the former Directors, Jody Williams – who is also one of Calvary's Global Partners – are here to welcome us in to the celebration. While they will unpack some of the history and purpose of the preschool, they will, more importantly, share stories of how God has worked mightily in using CPS to extend the gospel within our local community.

It's a common tale that once people achieve success and make enough to meet their needs and a few luxuries, they take their feet off the gas in business. Beyond using our money to serve ourselves, there's a higher level and purpose - giving our money away to issues we care deeply about. For The N2 Company CEO and co-founder, Duane Hixon, human trafficking is the cause his heart broke for, and he has used his resources to help solve it. How do we use our success to change something in the world? How do we choose the organizations to support? In this episode, Duane shares how he landed on human trafficking, the impact that's being made, and why there's another level above achieving our own dreams. Something in our hearts broke for human trafficking and we can help do something about this issue. -Duane Hixon Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode -How to find a new dream When Duane's football dream didn't work out, how did he pivot quickly instead of stewing in it not working out? -Contribute to what your heart breaks for How do you determine what to do with your charitable contributions when there are so many causes out there? -Highlighting human trafficking From children enslaved to work on illegal fishing boats in Ghana, to young women being trafficked here in the US, why is this issue so pressing? Guest Bio Duane Hixon is the CEO and co-founder of The N2 Company. In 2004, Duane and his friend, Earl Seals were burnt out from their jobs and thought there must be a company they would both actually enjoy working with. Time to spend with their growing families, unlimited financial opportunity, a workplace with values that matched their own. For many organizations, there's a particular cause or injustice that sparks a passion – something that makes them want to effect change. For N2, this is the epidemic of human trafficking. When Duane and Earl realized there are more people enslaved today than at any other time in human history, the two felt called to help. For more information, head to https://n2co.com/. In 2008 I started a series of radio shows with fellow Freak and host, Jonny Rock. The original format was based around vinyl. Digital started to creep in, then CD's, then YouTube rips, and so on. But the idea remained the same, that we were sharing our discoveries with an audience.Fast forwarding a couple of years and expanding on the original concept, I will once again be playing dance music that you may or may not have heard, but this time said music will be readily available, if pointed in the right direction of course. The idea is for you to use me as your selector slash shop assistant in a virtual record store. Not only will I be shouting about both old and new music, but I will also be following it up with a series of compilations to be released on my label, Classic throughout the year. I will be your slightly odd, slightly off-centre, guide. But ultimately and most importantly, your friendly on-line record shop assistant. Josh is joined by Tony Hixon, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Hixon Zuercher Capital Management, and author of Stepping Stones. Tony's book is a personal story about his mother's experience with retirement and her life after a long fruitful career. Tony and Josh chat about the importance of finding purpose in retirement to balance the goal of financial stability. Tony's book focuses not only on making sure your retirement finances support your goals in retirement, but also looking for new direction in this next phase of life after you've stepped away from your career.
Tony Hixon is the Co-Founder and COO for Hixon Zuercher Capital Management, an independent RIA based out of Ohio that oversees more than $300 million in assets under management for 330 client households. The tragic loss of Tony's mother just six months post-retirement led him to realize retirees' mental unpreparedness for this new phase and inspired a change in his financial planning approach, prompting him to write a book, drawing on his mother's experience to guide and honor his clients and other retirees. Listen in as Tony shares his personal experience of his mother's depression and suicide post-retirement, underscoring the importance of mental preparation for retirement and how he subsequently incorporated retirement transition coaching into his practice. We also discuss the firm's active portfolio management approach, the renaming of the firm to Hixon Zuercher Capital Management for legacy and recognition, and Tony's belief that life fulfillment starts with finding one's 'why.' They discuss the ways in which Ally engages with their customers, from the first introductory communication, to why they build relationships before selling on products, to the hyper-personalized experiences they provide on their website and app. They also talk about the challenges to consumer marketing today, especially in the financial services space, how Ally collects and utilizes zero-party data, the importance of retaining your loyal customers, and why success is building relationships with the people around you. Topics discussed: How Ally centers their marketing efforts on building relationships and trust through conversational communication, and why it's important to them to wait two months before trying to sell on a new product. The challenges to consumer marketing, especially in the financial services industry, when customer behavior and sentiments are changing daily. How the marketing team is structured, and how it sits traditional marketers alongside analysts and statisticians to have the "trifecta of what you would want for a good marketing strategy." Why Ally has retention rates in the high 90%, and why customers of multiple business lines have lower attrition, higher balance growth, and more engagement. The challenges to consumer marketing, including finding the right product for the right people, and the “conversational choreography” needed to make sure the right customer is getting the right message at the right time. A behind-the-scenes look at how Ally leverages the data they have about customers to drive its hundreds of trigger campaigns and to create 6,000 unique variations of Ally.com to highly personalize their customers' experiences. The excitement around using zero-party data to drive better customer experiences through hyper-personalization, and how Ally gathers that data through, for example, their online savings account buckets. Advice for young marketers, including understanding how important data is to marketing efforts, and how success is about building relationships with the people you work with.

Hixon joins us again for part two of our discussion of how this all fits in with a biblical perspective.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"My mom had plans to retire first. She was experiencing severe burnout in her role as the Director of Hospice Care at a nearby facility. She had a heart for helping others, but the daily wear and tear of agency bureaucracy and changing regulations was becoming a challenge. She was ecstatic when both myself and her original advisor gave her the all-clear. Like many of my clients, she was just excited to take that next step in her life. Quickly after my mom retired, my family and I started to see a change in her. Anxiety and depression took root quickly, and she was plagued with a constant feeling that she no longer served a purpose. Soon after, she started obsessing over their money and spending. Despite frequent reassurances from my dad, myself, and my sister, nothing could convince her otherwise that retirement was anything but a road to financial and emotional ruin. In 2011, six months after retiring, she took her own life. As a son, I was devastated. She had been the light of my life, and of the lives of so many. She was immensely missed, and her absence has been a constant reminder of everything that might have been had things gone differently. As an advisor, my entire world was upside down. One of my personal strengths is planning and focusing on the analytical side of finance. I'm investment-focused, and I had always thrived in my role as a technical financial specialist on our team. Now, however, it became clear to me that financial planning was much more than numbers in a software program. I knew I needed to change my approach. Now, I approach financial advice in a different way. I firmly believe that our clients aren't served when we only look at the numbers. Our whole team focuses on a holistic approach when working with our pre-retiree and retiree clients because we've seen firsthand the effects of not having a plan to live a goals and values-based life beyond your career. If finances are the only thing we consider, we overlook the wellbeing of our clients and the long-term satisfaction they'll receive from having a financial plan in place. My wife, Keri, and I have two daughters, Eliana and Kya, and one son, Everett. My family means the world to me, and I love the life we've built together. When I'm not spending time with them or working, I'm involved in my church's music ministry. I also enjoy competing in Triathlons and have completed many Olympic and Sprint distance races. I love watching sports and movies, reading books on leadership and personal development, and focusing on staying up to date with the world of investing and financial planning through podcasts.'

LISTEN TO LEARN Why you need to define your values while obtaining success How to advocate for yourself Why Suzi planned to become a pediatrician The challenges of patent prosecution WHAT ALSO DISCUSS Advice if you are practicing law and miserable (hint: it's not YOU) How to identify S.M.A.R.T. goals for your life Why [most] lawyers hate math Law school teaches people to advocate for causes they're passionate about, but women lawyers often forget themselves. The giving, or empathetic nature, of most women allows them to be given to their own deficit, but not anymore. Suzi Hixon wants women lawyers to fight for themselves, support themselves, and define success for themselves."You must define success for yourself because otherwise, you will look for the big career, big office, and beautiful family that society tells you that you must have," explains Suzi Hixon in Episode 69 of You Are A Lawyer. You must define success for yourself because otherwise, you will look for the big career, big office, and beautiful family that society tells you that you must have. When you take a step back and think about how your goals and values affect your life, then you will see how your life is successful.“You can always earn another $500, but you cannot get your time back,” explains Suzi Hixon. When Suzi Hixon created the podcast, Legally Blissed Conversations, to hear the struggles and wins of women lawyers. There were often common stories of successful women who weren't the best at advocating for themselves. Where are your drive for success and career goals really coming from? Do you want all of those things and are the things you are chasing aligning with your values? From childhood, Suzi thought that she would be a veterinarian or pediatrician, Suzi did not earn the grades that she thought she needed for medical school and Suzi was disheartened by the MCAT. Born in Colorado, Suzi later moved to Kentucky to attend undergraduate and law school. Suzi moved to California and returned to Kentucky where she runs her law firm and founded the Legalled Blissed community. The Legally Blissed Community provides women lawyers with mentorship and friendship, both help women attorneys to thrive in their careers and lives. After attending law school so that she could extend her undergrad years, Suzi was unsure of the type of law that she wanted to practice after law school.During a study abroad semester, Suzi was introduced to European patent law and found that to be really interesting. But patent law is really steeped in mechanical engineering and didn't play well with the science background that Suzi has. Suzi later changed to trademark law and found it really exciting to work with trademarks, logos, and marketing departments because this work involved marketing departments and the "fun" nerds. This is a community that's built to transform female attorneys into self-advocates by learning to challenge those socially ingrained beliefs about how we should practice, de-programming what we're taught about how we should show up as lawyers, and prioritizing values over setting goals.
