Lights Out: A Pioneering Horror Radio Show The radio show "Lights Out" captivated audiences with its chilling horror and suspense stories from 1934 to 1947, albeit with some interruptions. The initial run from 1934 to 1936 was followed by a hiatus, but the show's revival in 1942 reignited its popularity, solidifying its status as a prominent program in the genre. Groundbreaking Sound Design and Disturbing Narratives The show's creator, Wyllis Cooper, was already renowned for his contributions to other successful horror and suspense radio shows like "Quiet, Please!" and "The Witch's Tale." In 1943, the reins were passed to Arch Oboler, a prolific figure in radio production, who further elevated the show's reputation. "Lights Out" distinguished itself through its innovative use of sound effects and its exploration of unsettling themes. The show's mastery of sound design created an atmosphere of palpable suspense and terror, leaving a lasting impression on listeners. The narratives frequently delved into the darker facets of humanity, featuring tales of murder, madness, and the supernatural. Enduring Legacy Even today, "Lights Out" holds a special place in the hearts of old-time radio enthusiasts and horror aficionados. Its groundbreaking use of sound and its ability to deliver thought-provoking and often disturbing storylines continue to resonate with audiences. Memorable episodes like "Chicken Heart," featuring a woman trapped with a mysterious killer, and "Cat Wife," exploring a man's unsettling marriage to a feline entity, exemplify the show's enduring appeal. These episodes, among many others, showcase the chilling and suspenseful narratives that made "Lights Out" a landmark in radio history. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support

Today's episode is about a female, Mexican serial killer. If that wasn't distinct enough, our killer was also a professional wrestler. Juana Barraza had a very sad and tough childhood and ended up growing up despising her mother. The fact that she hated her mom led her to hate all "elderly" women, enough so, that authorities believe she killed anywhere from 42-48 women. Despite those numbers, Juana was convicted of only 16 murders and was sentenced to 756 years in prison.SOURCES:1) "The Little Old Lady Killer: The Sensationalized Crimes of Mexico's First Female Serial Killer" by Susana Vargas Cervantes2) https://english.elpais.com/elpais/2015/07/28/inenglish/1438090253_237323.html?outputType=amp3) https://crimereads.com/juana-barraza-the-woman-who-was-killing-mexicos-elderly-women/4) https://www.shondaland.com/live/a22538024/lucha-libre-women-of-mexican-wrestling/5) http://www.murderpedia.org/female.B/b/barraza-juana.htm6) https://filmdaily.co/obsessions/true-crime/juana-barraza-serial-killer/7) https://www.crimerevue.com/2023/02/juana-barraza-little-old-lady-killer.html8) https://theculturetrip.com/north-america/mexico/articles/everything-you-need-to-know-about-santa-muerte/9) https://murderpedia.org/male.P/p/paulin-thierry.htm10) https://www.grunge.com/663711/the-true-story-of-female-serial-killer-juana-barraza/11) evidencelockerpodcast.com

Show Notes Episode 397: All Bun, No Beef This week Host Dave Bledsoe goes on a date only to have it end badly when he experiences a “Clara Peller Moment”. (He claimed it was a very cold evening.) On the show this week we head back to 1984 when America had our hearts stolen by a crank octogenarian demanding to know where the beef was kept! That's right, we talk Clara Peller and Where's the Beef! Along the way we learn that despite not eating fast food for almost four years, Dave was somehow still fat! (He claims he was just “big boned", his latest date would beg to differ!) Then we dive right into the history of a totally different Dave, a Dave with a dream that did not involve a specific brand of Irish whiskey, Dave Thomas. We learn how Wendy's went from a plucky upstart to the third largest burger chain in the United States. Moreover, we learn how Wendy's had a plan to take on the Clown and King and become Number One! How? With the Platonic Ideal of the Little Old Lady. We chart Clara's improbable rise from Chicago manicurist to national overnight sensation! (They were wearing her face at football games!) Finally, we discuss how it all ended over a jar of spaghetti sauce. (As these things so often do) Our Sponsor this week is Meef, a meat substitute that is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike meat! We open with Clara Peller's star turn commercial and close with Clare and Coyote McCloud demanding to know where the HELL is the beef! Juana Barraza's youth was everything but normal. Her mother was an alcoholic prostitute, who pimped Juana out when she was 12 years old, in exchange for three beers. When Juana was old enough she left the small Mexican town of Hidalgo for Mexico City. She worked many odd jobs and had multiple failed marriage; having four children from them. She toured central Mexico as a masked wrestler named La Dama del Silencio (The Lady of Silence). She began her career as a criminal in 1995, after the birth of her fourth child. Her and her friend would burglarize the homes of elderly people until her friend's boyfriend (who was a corrupt federal officer) forced Juana to pay him 12,000 pesos ($608) in return that she would not be arrested. In 2002, Juana committed her first murder. As her killing spree began to roll, police announced that there was a possible serial killer they named "El Mataviejitas", who was believed to be a homosexual man or transgender woman who was killing elderly people. Juana would wear all white and pretended to be a city council nurse sent to check on her targeted victim. Juana was eventually caught in 2006 and was tried for 30 murders, only being found guilty of 16. Her sentence? A easy 759 years in prison. Regardless, she will be paroled in 2058 at the age of 101.

Today, a terrific horror story from 1943 by Arch Oboler. The radio series "Lights Out!" made especially good use of sound, as you will hear in this story about two girls on a creepy trip through the woods to see their long lost aunt. Today we embark on an epic journey through the very tangled vines of what makes a victim and what makes a criminal. Specifically we will study the case of La Mataviejitas, The Little Old Lady Killer and what her demonization reveals about violence against women on a macro scale in Mexico.
Barbara Maier Gustern was shoved from behind outside her Chelsea residence. Friends found the well-known and beloved voice coach in the apartment lobby covered in blood. A bicyclist spotted the injured 87-year-old on the street and brought her in. Gustern hit her head during the attack and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment. She ultimately passed away from her injuries after being placed on life support. Now, a New York woman is facing manslaughter charges. Police released security footage of the incident, which showed Lauren Pazienza reportedly shoving Gustern before running away. Police, also say the suspect returned to watch, as the victim was carried away by ambulance. Police had been looking for Pazienza for weeks when she arrived at the police station Tuesday with her lawyer and turned herself in. Pazienza reportedly hid at her parents' house. So far, no motive for the attack is known. It was my pleasure to sit down with U.S.-based, Anne Born, for a chat following her most recent Winter Camino this past December. Anne has walked numerous times documenting her journeys on social media with the hashtag, “littleoldladywalking”. I joked with her that in my opinion, she is anything but a “little old lady walking”. To me, she is one brave, smart, and accomplished Pilgrim! Anne is an expert on the Catedral de Santiago. and on walking winter Caminos. She is an award-winning author, now working on her third Camino book. She has already published If You Stand Here: A Pilgrim's Tour of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and Buen Camino! Tips from an American Pilgrim. In this interview, you will get to know Anne better through the stories and tips she shares about walking The Camino and you will hear so many interesting facts and stories about the Cathedral. I love learning from Anne and I feel blessed to call her a friend and fellow Peregrina. Buen Camino!
