Today we read Golden Kamuy by Satoru Noda and learn how to survive in the forest while also hunting down a treasure map tattooed on a bunch of escaped prisoners.

This week we're testing our new short format and talking about two things that do prominently feature shirtless people. First up is Nick's favorite, a new season of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba is out and the hashira training arc is well underway. Will this be the season that brings Nick back into the fold or is it too little too late? Next up we're talking the most recent live action adaptation of a beloved anime. This time it's Golden Kamuy who get's its meatspace debut. This adaptation was full of surprises, a number of them pleasant even. Covering live action anime seems to be the main focus of our episodes these days, but all the same we've got a full deep dive if you're into that sort of thing. This week, friend of the pod John Bellamy Poster commandeered a gunship and made his way onto Gladio Free Europe to discuss 19th century Japanese history in the backdrop of the unique historical manga Golden Kamuy. Exploring the pivotal moments that reshaped Japan, John takes us through the monumental arrival of Commodore Perry's black ships, an event that broke Japan's 220-year-old policy of isolation and precipitated a domino effect of change. We delve into the Meiji Restoration, an era of rapid modernization and westernization, which saw the overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate and the reinstatement of imperial rule. The Boshin War, a civil war that symbolized the end of the samurai era, is examined through the lens of its influence on Japanese society and politics. Lastly, we traverse the rugged terrains of Hokkaido and discuss the beginning of its colonization, shedding light on the cultural and economic impacts this had on the indigenous Ainu people, as well as Japan itself. Interspersed with references to the gripping saga of Golden Kamuy, John explains how this historical manga offers a visceral narrative that intertwines these significant events with the lives of its richly developed characters. Join us on Gladio Free Europe for a journey through the transformative epochs of Japan, brought to life by history and manga alike.

Power Rankings are done and we can breathe a brief sigh of relief. This week on the show we're going in depth on Oshi No Ko, the new idol show that is taking the internet by storm and demanding a great deal of our attention. A lot of people are pretty hype on this show, but we're particularly interested in its portrayal of the idol and entertainment industry in general as well as what separates it from all of the other idol type shows that have come before it. From there we get into Nick's personal gripes with Demon Slayer or maybe just hero type shows in general, is he being crazy or does he have a point? You be the judge. We're also celebrating the return of Golden Kamuy and Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible both of which suffered a delay but are finally back. We've also got a funny little hacking incident featured on this last week's one big thing. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram
