Andy Wirth and Tony Harris moved halfway across the world to help build Neom: Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's futuristic new city in the Saudi desert. But what they found wasn't the desert utopia of Neom's marketing. Instead, they found a project bleeding cash, led by a screaming CEO, where very little was actually being built.  WSJ's Rory Jones and Eliot Brown explain how Neom fell years behind schedule – and went billions of dollars over-budget – thanks to a culture of runaway spending and never telling the boss “no.” Hosted by Ryan Knutson.  Further Listening: - Neom, Pt 1: Skiing in the Desert  Learn more about your ad choices. Inside SAP Business NetworkThe Big Themes:New Organizational Structure: SAP reorganized its internal teams by combining Business Network and Digital Supply Chain into a new unit: Supply Chain Management. While this may sound like internal restructuring, Tony Harris explained that for customers, it signals a major innovation push. A major focus in 2025 will be on supply chain orchestration and supply chain risk — two areas that demand real-time responsiveness and cross-functional collaboration.SAP Business Network as a Response to Tariffs and Disruption: With the rise of geopolitical tensions, trade wars, and tariffs, companies need to rapidly adjust their supplier bases. SAP Business Network helps companies respond to such disruptions. If tariffs threaten certain international suppliers, businesses can use SAP Business Network to quickly identify alternative suppliers in unaffected regions or within domestic markets.Introducing SAP Business Network Promote Subscription: On the very day of the interview, SAP launched a new subscription service called SAP Business Network Promote, designed specifically for suppliers. This offering helps vendors raise their visibility and connect with global buyers on SAP Business Network. Features include enhanced and verified company profiles, uploading of full product catalogs, and access to AI-powered tools for responding to requests for information (RFIs), improving content, and correcting invoice errors. Suppliers also receive robust data insights.

The Big Themes:Network Benefits for Buyers and Suppliers: The SAP Business Network brings together buyers and suppliers. Buyers use the network to strengthen supply chains, meet sustainability goals, and access new markets. Suppliers use it for business growth, streamlined processes, and greater visibility. The network is free for suppliers to join, allowing them to build profiles, respond to RFIs, and engage in sourcing events. With millions of global suppliers, the network serves businesses of all sizes.Transformation of Traditional Business Models: SAP Business Network is helping to eliminate the old divide between back-office and front-office operations. It integrates various business functions — procurement, supply chain, logistics, and order collaboration — making them work together to improve the customer experience. This transformation is vital in an era where customer experience is a key differentiator in competitive markets.Inclusivity of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs): SAP Business Network is designed to serve businesses of all sizes, from large enterprises to smaller boutique firms. With the introduction of the Promote subscription in 2025, small suppliers can showcase their products and services alongside larger companies. Additionally, the network's Discovery feature provides smaller suppliers with the chance to participate in large procurement opportunities. The Big Quote: “We have the biggest companies in the world as suppliers on the network, but we also have millions of SME-sized organizations. Smaller suppliers don't always have a way to showcase their catalogs of products or services in the same way that maybe a large company or a large supply would have, but this new set of capabilities we're providing to suppliers under

Indiana Coroner Identifies Another Victim in Herb Baumeister Case

In a significant development, the Hamilton County Coroner announced that a bone fragment from the 10,000 human remains recovered from the farm of alleged serial killer Herb Baumeister has been identified as belonging to Jeffrey A. Jones, who was reported missing in August 1993. Jones is the 12th confirmed victim among the remains found at Fox Hollow Farm in 1996. Advancements in DNA technology made the identification possible, revitalizing efforts to name more victims. Coroner Jeff Jellison highlighted that three victims have been identified recently, and four more DNA profiles have been submitted to the FBI for potential matches. Experts from the FBI, Indiana State Police Laboratory, University of Indianapolis, and Texas-based Othram Laboratory collaborate on this effort. "This investigation is extremely challenging due to the condition of the remains," Jellison stated, noting that many were found burnt and crushed. Despite these obstacles, the team remains committed to identifying the victims. Key to the investigation was an informant, Tony Harris, who met Baumeister, posing as "Brian Smart," at a gay bar and later escaped an attempted strangulation at Fox Hollow Farm. Harris reported the incident to authorities, but the police struggled to locate the farm based on his description. It wasn't until over a year later that Harris encountered "Brian Smart" again, providing a crucial tip to the police. Virgil Vandagriff, a retired Marion County detective who had previously investigated missing queer men in the area, including Goodlet, told local NBC affiliate WTHR that when Harris spotted "Smart" the second time, he managed to record "Smart's" license plate number. This information was instrumental in identifying "Brian Smart" as Herbert Baumeister. By this time, Baumeister's marriage of more than 20 years to his wife Julie had all but fallen apart. The couple had three children, including a 15-year-old son who made a grisly discovery in the woods behind their Fox Hollow home nearly two years before their 1996 divorce. According to local ABC affiliate WRTV, in 1994, around the same time Indianapolis police began searching for a serial killer targeting gay men, Baumeister's son found a human skull on their property. Detectives reported that Julie Baumeister instructed her son to leave the skull in the woods until his father returned home. When she later confronted Herbert Baumeister, he claimed it was a remnant from his father's medical practice. Julie accepted this explanation for two years, but reconsidered upon filing for divorce. Initially, the couple had rebuffed police attempts to search the property, but once Herbert was away, Julie allowed the search. Police then discovered a skull, teeth, and other bone fragments. At this point, Baumeister, had fled to Ontario, Canada. Once there, police say he killed himself. He left a suicide note at the scene but made no mention of his victims, only mentioning his failing thrift store business and marriage. The victims' families had been waiting over a quarter century for answers, Jellison said, and he was determined to bring them closure. In fact, it was Allen Livingston's cousin who approached Jellison last year, urging him to expedite the identification process. Livingston's mother, Sharon, now in her mid-70s and long holding onto hope for information about her son, had been diagnosed with two forms of terminal cancer, the cousin explained. Sharon told WTHR in 2022 that she kept a landline in her home for more than 30 years because it was the only number her son knew when he disappeared, as cell phones weren't common at the time. She reported him missing just days after not hearing from him. “I know that man got him, I just know,” Sharon said of Baumeister in a 2022 interview. “I'm pretty sure they are going to find him. I just know they are.” In October, Jellison expressed amazement after positively confirming Allen Livingston's remains, marking the first positive identification since the 1990s. “What are the odds, out of 10,000 remains? Out of 10,000, we selected 44 and the first identification is a person from the family that initiated this whole thing,” he said. “Where does that come from?” Jellison said his office initially celebrated the success of identifying Livingston, but the joy was quickly tempered by the realization that another murder victim had been found. The current owner of Fox Hollow has continued to find fragments and submits them to authorities. The investigation into Baumeister's activities has revealed at least 25 victims from the remains found on his property. By 1999, police had linked Baumeister to 16 missing men whose bodies were found in streams across Indiana and Ohio. Renewed efforts to identify more victims began in November 2022, with Jellison partnering with forensic labs to extract DNA from the remains. Jellison's team continues to urge those with missing loved ones from that period to contact the coroner's office, hoping to bring closure to more families after decades of uncertainty.    Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Matt and Mike Read Comics episode 14 is the final part in our Starman series. For those of you just coming to the party, Mike and I have been reading the two gigantic compendiums of James Robinson's run on Starman. This is a run on a title that flies under the radar (I didn't know about it until Mike introduced me to it) but HOLY SHIT. HOLY SHIT. It's been a long time since I've read such a complete and engaging story with rich characters and plot threads that stretch throughout the entire narrative and resolve in the most satisfying ways. It's just a master class in storytelling and some of the best comic work I've ever read. Seriously. Absolutely brilliant work by James Robinson. Let's not forget the art. Tony Harris took up most of the penciling duties in the first compendium, but in the second compendium we are treated to a plethora of artists who all bring their unique perspectives to this sprawling story. Incredible, through and through. Top tier comic book. Everyone must read. All of it.

Matt and Mike Read Comics is back with episode 13, part 2 of our Starman series, by James Robinson and Tony Harris. If you're wondering why we need two parts, and even three, to discuss this series; just look at the size of the compendiums! There are well over 2,000 pages of comics gold here. They're like really awesome textbooks. Following up on the back half of the first compendium, we see Ted Knight really start to come into his own as a reluctant hero. We learn SO much more about the history of the Shade and his generations-long blood feud with the Ludlows. Here is where the brilliant cast of supporting characters in Starman really start to shine. David, the Shade, the Mist, the O'Dare family, and one of my personal favorites, Bobo Bennetti. Part 3 coming soon. James Robinson and Tony Harris' run on Starman is a must read for all comic book fans.

Matt and Mike are back after the holiday break and we are still reading comics! On episode 12 we start our multi-part breakdown of the legendary 90's run of Starman, by James Robinson and Tony Harris. Award-winning journalist Tony Harris is back to talk about his new special, “Casey Anthony's Parents – The Lie Detector Test” (now on A&E). In 2008, Casey Anthony's daughter, Caylee, went missing and the child's disappearance gripped the world. When her decomposing body was found near the Anthonys' home a month later, the pursuit of justice for Caylee began. Casey was found not guilty of all significant charges in 2011, yet many questions remained as to what happened. Tony Harris discusses his latest mission – administering on-camera lie detector tests to Casey's parents, George and Cindy Anthony, to find out if crimes, both new and old, were committed and covered up. Sean: Now, I want to put a little twist in our conversation and ask you, were there some people who in your past you have mentored and you talked with and given advice to and then ultimately ended up earning the business or hurting the business? What do you think would be the number one factor for businesses that fail? Tony: You could say luck. Some businesses have failed because it was just bad luck. But they weren't listening. They weren't listening to what experts were telling them, be they trend forecasters, finance directors, or clients. One of the things we used to talk about actually was having healthy paranoia. Now, I don't know if there's such a thing as healthy paranoia, but it meant that you did worry about things if it's too quiet. Why is that? And I think you have to take the pandemic out of it and all of that because nobody had a training manual for that. But I think more often than not, you haven't read the rooms, you haven't smelled what's happening in the air. You've ignored the advice. You've not trusted how things are going or you just haven't changed quick enough communications. You know, look, we have social media. It's changed the way we operate in every single way. Things like the pandemic came along and changed the way we operated entirely. There are so many scooters on the road now delivering food. It's affecting the landscape. It's all these things that can make you make really poor decisions. There was the space race and the Americans spent something like $10 million developing a pen that could work in zero gravity. And the Russians gave their astronauts a pencil. You kind of go, there's a little bit of that. How do you react to the way the market is going? You know, you can't just sit there and go, it won't affect me. We won't do Internet banking. People will never do it. Well, they will. We don't want mobile phones. Yeah, we do. People are going to want big screens on this. No, they're not. Listen to the early adopters. See what's going on in the market. You cannot keep pretending it won't change because it will. You have to embrace change all the time. That would be my number one thing with anybody who doesn't want their business to fail: to embrace change. But before you even think about doing it, always check. Does the world need another one? That's the difficulty of people who, you know, have their hearts set on things like restaurants or bars. This is a lovely business, but you can fall out of fashion very, very quickly. Sometimes there's just nothing you can do about it. Apart from going, does the world need another restaurant? But they might need my restaurant. And that's what's lovely about entrepreneurs. The problem for entrepreneurs is that they start with a dream and a vision and they end up fixing it. And that's what they have to stop trying to do. They've got to get out of doing it and go back to their dream and their vision. I think that when businesses can fall apart, the vision is no longer achievable either because you lost sight of it or just the market pivoted and you were not in that pivot. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Website: https://leadershipstack.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack Leadership Stack Merch: https://leadershipstack.com/shop/ - - - Tony Harris Website: https://strayrhino.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tony-harris-8ab54a91 Book: https://www.amazon.com/Leadership-101-Tony-Harris-ebook/dp/B09WXR9Q2N

Sean: Why would some companies not attract talent? Was usually the problem and what's usually the solution? Tony: Well, the first thing I always say to people who are leaders and I've always felt it myself, is that if you're the smartest person in the room, you've got a problem because you shouldn't be the smartest person in the room. You might be the most well-rounded person in the room. If it's if we're talking about this, there should be somebody else in the room who's smarter than you are on it. Hiring is very difficult. It's very difficult at the moment because there are so many new dynamics that you have to bear in mind working from home. You know, the hybrid model that people want work-life balance, which is a particularly important aspect. When I started, it was all about higher, faster, and stronger. We stayed up later, we worked harder. And that's how you beat your opponents. But the new generation working in that, that isn't what motivates them. They're not necessarily motivated in the same way. So one of the things that can put people off is if you're still working to that kind of model I was CEO of, I would still be there if I had to be there at 1:00 in the morning working to get That's how I was trained to be.  But very quickly, you realize I can't go and expect that of everybody. In the old days, people expected me to stay later than my boss. And it's not right. And what you have to do is listen. One of the things that's interesting is that we still think and I'm as guilty of it as anybody. We still think sometimes in running our businesses in terms of almost military. We talk about campaigns. We talk about people who walk toward the gunfire. We tend to think about it in that sort of slightly confrontational, aggressive way. And that isn't how a lot of the newer entrants into the job market want to think they want to advance. So I think the companies that fail are the ones that are not thinking about what it is that the new job entrants would look for. They want to know that you have a purpose. They want to know that you're thinking about more than just profit. What are your environmental policies or charitable endeavors? How do you keep us together? How do you entertain us? What is your culture like? You know, and I do feel for many current leaders because I find that a sort of odd paradox of workforces that desperately want enlightened cultures, good working experience team they like are rewarded properly with the flip side of they want to come in when we have to or we want to do hybrid working because it is very difficult to create a culture when there is minimal contact. But we will find a way through it. At the moment because we never legislated for it, it's going to be difficult and there are all sorts of wonderful experiments going on all over the world. A company I know called Hutch, which is a sort of production company that has gone four day week. Everybody is on four-day weeks. We have three-day long weekends. And they did it well because the people who worked four days already had some. Well, I'm a part-time worker. I work four days. Their salaries went up, then paid full-time as if they were on five days. You know, I think we're going to see some best practices and we just all have to be prepared to learn from it. But I think this whole thing about, Oh, millennials are terrible and Gen Z and we can't work, that's nonsense. You just have to listen to what they want. So I think the difficulties come from if you're still a fairly unenlightened employer, they can smell it on you. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Website: https://leadershipstack.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack Leadership Stack Merch: https://leadershipstack.com/shop/ - - - Tony Harris Website: https://strayrhino.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tony-harris-8ab54a91 Book: https://www.amazon.com/Leadership-101-Tony-Harris-ebook/dp/B09WXR9Q2N

Sean: What are some leadership principles that you learned there that you still practice today and you teach it from time to time with some people that you mentor? Tony: Well, interestingly in the book a lot of it is quite nuanced. There's a lot of overlap between some of the observations. There are 101 of them, but there are some overriding themes, and those are things that I kind of keep coming back to. The first of them is always remember that you are more often than not 99% of the time you're a leader on merit. Somebody somewhere thought you could handle the responsibility or the situation demanded that you were the best person. But whatever it was, you're there on merit. And a lot of you may think that you're not right about that. A lot of people have doubts. Churchill used to talk about his black dog because, you know, he became angry and doubted things Lincoln did, lots of great leaders do. And actually, one of the first things is if you're not having doubts, that's when your problems start. That's a theme that I kind of keep going back to. You're there on merit, and even if you doubt it, remind yourself somebody thought you were good enough. The other one is really about protecting the team dynamic. The team dynamic is important, there is a difference between culture and team. You have to make sure you have to protect your culture but you have to protect your team as well. That means you need to listen a lot more than you might. A lot of leaders think that their job is to talk all the time. It's not. It's to listen to what's not being said. You then need to do that and involve people. So make sure that the team always feels that you're bringing them into play. You know, there's an old phrase, why have a dog and bark yourself? You don't. You brought people in to be experts. Let them do their job. Keep checking in and keep listening. Take the sting out of confrontations. That's another major one to do. And if you have to, you have to remove difficult participants, however skilled they may be. If they're not helping the team, they had better be doing something incredible and I doubt they ever are. Those are the kind of things that I sort of keep going back to. So the one about doubt listening to the team, it's all interrelated. Sean: Amazing, I remember another saying. If you want to go fast, go alone but if you want to go far, go together. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Website: https://leadershipstack.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack Leadership Stack Merch: https://leadershipstack.com/shop/ - - - Tony Harris Website: https://strayrhino.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tony-harris-8ab54a91 Book: https://www.amazon.com/Leadership-101-Tony-Harris-ebook/dp/B09WXR9Q2N
