179 - Jurassic Park III Hold onto your butts! This week on Reel Comic Heroes, we're diving headfirst into the chaotic, avian-infested world of Jurassic Park III. Join Travis and Patrick as they dissect the questionable parenting decisions, the surprisingly effective Alan Grant survival tips, and the sheer absurdity of a talking raptor dream sequence. Was this a worthy sequel or a prehistoric misstep? We'll debate the dino-sized plot holes, the surprisingly engaging action, and whether Tea Leoni's screaming could shatter glass. We'll discuss the introduction of new dinosaurs, the pacing of the plot, and whether the film successfully captured the wonder and terror of its predecessors. Get ready for a wild, surreal ride through the twisted corridors of early-2000s cinema as the Reel Comic Heroes crew dives headfirst into Monkeybone—a film that's part dark fantasy, part slapstick comedy, and entirely confusing. In this episode, we unpack the strange journey of cartoonist Stu Miley (Brendan Fraser), who finds himself trapped in a bizarre limbo world filled with oddball creatures, bad decisions, and one very horny monkey. We'll explore the film's chaotic tone, the surprisingly impressive creature design by Stan Winston Studio, and ask the big questions—like “Who exactly was this movie for?” and “Was Hollywood just... okay with this?” We also look at director Henry Selick's jump from The Nightmare Before Christmas to Monkeybone, and how the film's troubled production and studio meddling might've buried its potential. Expect laughs, bewilderment, and a healthy dose of 2000s nostalgia (and regret). Spoiler warning: monkey business ahead. 173 - Mission: Impossible - II with George Hendricks and Jonathan Howell WARNING: This episode is very explicit. Welcome back to Reel Comic Heroes—the podcast where we take a deep dive into the best (and sometimes worst) action-packed, comic-inspired, and downright legendary films. Today, we're tackling a sequel that cranked up the stunts, slow motion, and doves—Mission: Impossible II. Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, but this time, John Woo is in the director's chair, bringing his signature style of over-the-top action, intense face-offs, and, of course, some gravity-defying motorcycle chases. But does this sequel live up to the impossible standard set by the first film, or does it self-destruct in a blaze of fire and techno music? The post-1998 comic books made in the wake of the surprise Marvel hit adaptation are detailed tonight with Reel Comic Heroes' creator Travis Bow (who also gets to promote his new Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves minute-by-minute podcast!). Which comics have a surprisingly huge Neo-Noir detective style narrative and which ones have a morbid tone (possibly better used for something like Spawn, Constantine, Ghost Rider or Hellboy)? Is the Blade: Trinity side story available anywhere else or was it only on that unrated New Line Cinema DVD? Is the Blade II adaptation really versatile or too static an adaptation of the movie? And more deep dives into a less talked about yet key comic book transformation! On this month's episode we're stepping back into the world of television, this time looking at the six-episode story arc of the fifth season of the hit CW show, Arrow! In this televised adaptation of the DC Comics character, Lundgren guest stars as Konstantin Kovar, the leader of a Russian criminal empire who shows up in flashbacks as the main antagonist to Stephen Amell's superhero, the Green Arrow! Dolph may not have the biggest role (and to be honest, there are a TON of TV tropes that tend to weigh the episodes down!), but that didn't stop us from having fun discussing these episodes! Returning to the show to help me discuss this one is Travis Bow, host of the Reel Comic Heroes Podcast! In what ways does Dolph's inclusion help elevate these episodes... and at the same time, almost grind the story to a halt? Are flashbacks/prequels really necessary to the development of a character, especially five seasons in? And what exactly is going on with Green Arrow's team of D-list superheroes (cleverly named "Team Arrow"!)? Join us as Travis and I answer these questions and many more as we chat Arrow! Minute Sixty Five: From Agent Romanoff Questioning Loki About Barton's Mind to Loki Asking Her What She'd Do If He Vowed to Spare HimTravis Bow from the Reel Comic Heroes podcast and Marvel Events Timeline podcast joins us in this episode! In the sixty-fifth minute of The Avengers...We continue our counseling session – I mean interrogation – between Loki and Natasha. Okay, so it's really neither as she's covertly made her way here to find out what Loki's plans are with Agent Barton. All of this plays both of their strengths and make for an interesting scene between two people who love deception. Loki, for some reason, feels he's got the upper hand as he starts asking her to open up, and finding that she will. It's an interesting moment because she's the one who now has the upper hand. He just can't see it yet. We have a great conversation about this minute, and bid adieu to Travis after joining us for his last minute this season. Minute Sixty Four: From Loki Craving Power and Vengeance to Loki Expanding Agent Barton's MindTravis Bow from the Reel Comic Heroes podcast and Marvel Events Timeline podcast joins us in this episode! In the sixty-fourth minute of The Avengers...Thor and Fury wrap up their conversation, and Fury takes it dark. Is he saying he wants Thor to torture his brother? Yikes! Meanwhile, Thor is making it all about him. That's so Thor. What's interesting is that Loki likely would be trying to take over Midgard because it was Thor's regardless of whether Thor knew or not, but Thor turning the entire plot into one of vengeance on him does feel like maybe he's forgetting some of all those valuable lessons he'd learned before. We jump from there to find Loki in his cell, and lo and behold, Natasha's managed to sneak up on him. How? And why? We decide it didn't matter how, but it's awfully funny as a potential character trait that she has to sneak in everywhere she goes because she's just so good at it. As for why, it's clearly part of her plot to get info from him. What's interesting about the scene, though, is that both of them are tricksters and employ this sort of approach, plus Clint likely told Loki everything about her, so he should know she does this sort of thing. That puts her in a place where she's proving here that she's much better at it than Loki. It's a great minute, even if we do have some questions about the logistics and reasons. This is a fantastic scene of character building. It's got humor, thoughts on war, Bilgesnipes – everything that makes a scene play well. And then Fury interrupts, and the beautiful character scene shifts to plot and, well, it feels a bit clunky. It's not bad, and we love Fury, but it just feels a bit more written. It's the 7th night of Chanukah, and we're sending in Jonathan Howell from Minute Impossible and Cast & Furious and Travis Bow from Reel Comic Heroes and Marvel Events Timeline to tackle The League season 5 episode 13, "The 8 Defensive Points of Hanukkah."
Reel Comic Heroes: 151 - Spider-Man (94) Script Read We decided to do something a little different this episode and assembled some folks for a script read of the unmade ‘Spider-Man' from 1994. We're performing the 2nd revision by Joseph Goldman, James Cameron and John Brancato from 7/29/1993. This script would've eventually changed even more and would have become the version James Cameron planned to direct with Leonardo DiCaprio as Peter Parker. Ultimately, this project never got made (for several reasons) but we dusted off the script and gave it our best. Okey dokey.
