This project is filled with shifting tones and visual voices—how did you maintain thematic cohesion across multiple artists and chapters?4. There's a class warfare element baked into the DNA of Exquisite Corpses. How important was it for you to make that commentary explicit rather than just subtext?7. You're known for big ideas in genre fiction. Was there ever a version of Exquisite Corpses that could've been a prose project or TV pitch—or was comics always the only way this could work?8. What's one element in Exquisite Corpses—a character, twist, or scene—that you're most excited for readers to finally experience, but can't say anything about yet?

Jace and Rocky chat about the DC Comics releases for the week of April 16, 2025. We have the end of Challengers of the Unknown as some questions are answered and more are raised. Similarly, Detective Comics reaches the end of its first arc for this era in a very satisfying ending that shows that even in the face of great temptation, Batman has lines he will not cross. Nightwing starts a new arc that brings some personal context to the power vacuum that currentkly exists in Bludhaven, while Batman looks to help Wonder Woman solve a murder on Themiscrya. New Gods, Zatanna and Titans all continue their current stroylines in compelling fashion with gorgeous art. Finally Absolute Flash gives us even more personality for the absolute Rogues and shows just how out of control Wally's power are. It's a great week of DC titles so join us to hear all about these books and more.
Today, we present a wild and flowering conversation between two poets, writers, philosophers, and theobiologians Bayo Akomalofe and Sophie Strand. This conversation is from a 2022 SAND Community Gathering. To hear the full conversation with Q&A from the live webinar you can view it here (with SAND Membership). In Greek Mythology, the Titan Kronos eats an indigestible stone and vomits up the new Olympic pantheon of gods. In our current time, people planted in stratigraphic layers of shared trauma find themselves uniquely ill – physically and mentally. We are unable to digest food and unable to digest violence. What if indigestion – practical and mythical – was a sign that a new world was threatening to be born? The very basis of our nucleated cells is an ancient botched bacterial cannibalism. What if our inability to digest certain injustices was an invitation to vomit up a new pantheon? And in an age when we are all threaded through with microplastics and blood pressure stabilizers, what does it mean to start to physically grow into new shapes around incursions we cannot properly assimilate or expel? Bayo Akomolafe (Ph.D.), rooted with the Yoruba people in a more-than-human world, is the father to Alethea and Kyah, the grateful life-partner to Ije, son and brother. A widely celebrated international speaker, posthumanist thinker, poet, teacher, public intellectual, essayist, and author of two books, These Wilds Beyond our Fences: Letters to My Daughter on Humanity's Search for Home (North Atlantic Books) and We Will Tell our Own Story: The Lions of Africa Speak, Bayo Akomolafe is the Founder of The Emergence Network and host of the online postactivist course, ‘We Will Dance with Mountains'. He currently lectures at Pacifica Graduate Institute, California and University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont. He sits on the Board of many organizations including Science and Non-Duality (US) and Ancient Futures (Australia). In July 2022, Dr. Akomolafe was appointed the inaugural Global Senior Fellow of University of California's (Berkeley) Othering and Belonging Institute. He has also been appointed Senior Fellow for The New Institute in Hamburg, Germany. He is the recipient of the New Thought Leadership Award 2021 and the Excellence in Ethnocultural Psychotherapy Award by the African Mental Health Summit 2022. Sophie Strand is a writer based in the Hudson Valley who focuses on the intersection of spirituality, storytelling, and ecology. Yet it would probably be more authentic to call her a neo-troubadour animist with a propensity to spin yarns that inevitably turn into love stories. Give her a salamander and a stone and she'll write you a love story. Sophie was raised by house cats, puff balls, possums, raccoons, and an opinionated, crippled goose. She believes strongly that all thinking happens interstitially – between beings, ideas, differences, mythical gradients. She is the author of The Flowering Wand: Rewilding the Sacred Masculine and The Madonna Secret. She is also finishing a collection of essays about navigating an incurable genetic disease and early trauma through ecological storytelling. You can subscribe to her newsletter at sophiestrand.substack.com, and follow her work on Instagram: @cosmogyny and at www.sophiestrand.com. Jace and Rocky chat about the DC comics for the week of March 19, 2025. We get the debut of Absolute Flash with a new version of Wally West, a new look for the rogues and a story kicking off with lots of mystery. The second issue of The Last Days of Lex Luthor continues the instantly classic feel of the relationship between Superman and Lex. Nightwing is absolutely action-packed as are New Gods, Challengers of the Unknown and Detective Comics. The first arc of Absolute Batman concludes with some incredibly powerful emotional beats and fantastic art, as well. Join us to hear about all these titles and more!

The old Pull List Review episodes I did are now my Reading Pile episodes, where I talk about the books I read in a particular month. In this case, I talk about some of the 56 comic books I read in January 2025, plus my plans for the podcast this year. I'm also joining the #JSApril event that is celebrating 85 years of everyone's favorite and first Golden Age superhero team, the Justice Society of America. Listen to the promo in this episode, but you can also visit https://fireandwaterpodcast.com/JSApril for more information. Feedback! Jace and Rocky talk about the DC Comics for the week of February 19, 2025. We get the end of the Jenny Sparks mini-series which divides the guys as one really likes it and the other definitely does not. The latest issue of Wonder Woman also has the guys on opposite sides as does New Gods but the latter makes both their top five rankings. They both lovedNightwing and Challengers of the Unknown though and the debut of Zatanna's latest series is also very well recieved. Join us to hear abotu all these books and more!
Jace is joined by artist Evan Cagle to chat about New Gods #3. The story is really gaining momentum with flashbacks into the distant past, adding context to current events as we see the alien Nyctari attack Apokolops, New Genesis and perhaps earth is next. Evan talks about the freedom in the character design of the aliens he designed and the legacy feel of working on Jack Kirby creations. He also mentions that when series writer Ram V first told him about the project, he wasn't sure he was right for it. If anyone has seen the first two issues, I think you will agree that it is great that Evan came around to finding his way on the project. There's some great conversation here, including the BIG logos we get for the characters so join us!
