Frédéric Toutlemonde n'est pas un inconnu dans le monde du manga. Traducteur, interprète, éditeur, il vit depuis 2003 au Japon où il est une des personnes incontournables pour la promotion de la BD francophone au pays du Soleil Levant. Depuis un an, il est éditeur pour le label manga de chez Dupuis, Vega. Il s'emploie non seulement à créer des ponts entre la BD de chez nous avec le Japon, mais il a aussi l'intention de créer pour Vega un catalogue international de créateurs de mangas. Né en 1978 aux Lilas dans l'Est parisien, il est d'abord diplômé du département de langue japonaise de l'université de Paris 7, bourlinguant un peu partout dans le monde, il découvre le Japon en 1999 avant de s'y installer à partir de 2003. Autant dire qu'il a assisté aux premières loges à l'insolent succès du manga dans le monde. Il est notamment le patron de la revue Euromanga depuis 2008 et du label Euromanga LLC qui édite quelques-unes de nos meilleures BD francophones en japonais parmi lesquelles Radiant, Blacksad, Lastman ou Shangri-La. Traducteur, éditeur, on l'a vu quelquefois comme interprète des plus grands mangakas japonais sur les scènes de la Japan Expo comme d'Angoulême. Il dirige aussi depuis 2012 le Tokyo International Manga Festival (Kaigai Manga Festa). Bref, c'est un incontournable quand on parle des relations entre la BD franco-belges et le Japon. Des Français certes, mais aussi des Chiliens, des Argentins, des Espagnols… Ce grand connaisseur du marché japonais et international du manga nous raconte sa façon de voir. Today, we're talking to the visual mind behind some of modern comics' richest tapestries: none other than Juanjo Guarnido.  You likely know him from the gritty, cinematic pages of the unforgettable neo-noir Blacksad. This anthology series, where humans are portrayed by animal species in myriad creative ways, won 2 Eisner Awards and the Angouleme Prize for Artwork.  Of course he had quite an interesting journey leading up to this book, and I'm excited to discuss the path of his career. The assassin is dressed as an ancient Mayan warrior but Doc Savage and his men give chase when they go after the shooter. Savage corners the shooter at a construction site and apprehends him. He attempts to hypnotize the killer in an effort to learn more information from him but he declares that he would never betray the Son of the Feathered Serpent and leaps to his death. Back at their headquarters, Savage finds a warning on the wall telling him to turn back from his quest lest the red death strike once again. Savage reiterates that will not rest until he finds the men who murdered his father. He vows to continue his fathers work in helping those in need. The final epilogue depicts another Mayan Warrior contacting a mysterious figure known as the Son of the Feathered Serpent. The warrior notifies the Feathered Serpent that the assassination attempt has failed. The Feathered figure orders the warrior to return to Hidalgo in anticipation of another confrontation with Doc Savage in that country. John Blacksad is a cat on the prowl in many ways you suspect, and some you may not be aware of. Blacksad is written by Juan Díaz Canales and illustrated by Juanjo Guarnido. The first three stories of this amazing French comics series were translated and published by Dark Horse Comics in 2010. The world of Blacksad takes place in a anthropomorphic setting where the animals take on human characteristics. However, these characters take on social issues of the 1950s and 60s such as city politics, racial trauma, the energy crisis and aspects of classic murder mystery underlying it all. It is all up to John Blacksad, P.I, to solve the case. This team does a flawless job developing each individual character to where no two figures look a like, they have a unique voice, while still retaining the animal attributes they are based on. The interior art done by Juanjo Guarnido is does with spectacular use of the watercolor format. The panels are given a unique interesting environments based on real life places and cities you might recognize. We recommend this series for fans of crime noir, or looking for a fresh understanding of murder mystery stories with social commentary.
