This week we dive into Adam's TBR pile and find CONCRETE: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION by Paul Chadwick! This one subverted all of our expectations, taking what should've been a straightforward superhero comic and turning it on its head. Sure, there's a guy who got his brain swapped into a giant man made of rocks, but it's really a slice of life story about a man taking a tragedy and figuring out how to be fulfilled in his life. It chronicles his journey in and out of the lives of regular people, using his irregular situation to his advantage whenever possible. Despite all intents and purposes, this comic is as real as it gets, and we loved that about it... We also loved making an AGGRESSIVE amount of rock puns, so prepare yourself for that   Support Tales From The Short Box by joining our Patreon! patreon.com/BraveNewWorldsComics

A fount of superlative editorial skill and knowledge, you may know Diana Schutz from her 25 years at Dark Horse Comics, where she oversaw such game-changing series as Frank Miller's Sin City, Mike Mignola's Hellboy, Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo, Paul Chadwick's Concrete, and Matt Wagner's Grendel, to name but a few. Of course, we rewind all the way back to the beginning, where Diana started her comics career at a Canadian shop earnestly titled The ComicShop. Diana then created a comicsw newsletter called the Telegraph Wire and contributed to various fanzines and conventions, before she was hired at Marvel for a short stint. Then, it was on to Comico, during that imprint's heyday, and ultimately Dark Horse. What a career, and we barely scratch the surface! You can find and follow Diana on Facebook.___________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Paul Chadwick is one of the best writer-artists of our lifetime, and his most famous creation, Concrete, is an absolutely tremendous series. Critically hailed and extremely well-respected back in its heyday, today Concrete seems to be a bit forgotten compared to some of the more famous works from Chadwick's contemporaries. This is unfortunate. We're here to shine a light on a diamond that should never be forgotten. In this episode, we discuss Concrete and Paul Chadwick in general, and we specifically zero in on Dark Horse Comics' 2005 trade paperback edition of Concrete volume 1: Depths, which collects the first five issues of the series and a smattering of short stories. Although this trade paperback is technically out of print, you may be able to find a copy at cover price at your local store. It's also readily available digitally on digital library services like Hoopla, as well as on Amazon Kindle. Seek out any Concrete you can find! It deserves your time and attention, especially if you love beautifully drawn comics with well-defined characters, creative plots, and introspective, thoughtful, and contemplative themes. They talk about the importance of partnership and the general challenges one may face when building a partnership program.Reed and Paul discuss the many different aspects of a partnership in terms of helping both the sales and corporate sides of the business. They also share some of the best and worst situations they experienced during partner deals and the lessons gained from these experiences.HIGHLIGHTSChallenges of working with software partnersWhy partnership mattersTrust and relationships make a successful partner program Applying the concept of third-party validationThe best and worst moments Reed and Paul had in a partner dealQUOTESReed: "Getting that upfront trust and making sure you have a cohesive plan helps a lot with that. But also just making sure that the goal is set and everybody knows what they're going to get. Everyone's worried in the software services relationship like 'who's going to pay what?', 'where's the budget going to go?', and you really just have to be clear about that."Reed: "Unfortunately, this is the reason for the bad rap and the young software salesperson is starting to catch that which is just 'we're going to tell you everything does everything.' And the problem is that their competitors are doing the same and there is a lot of crossover between all of this technology."Paul: "Enablement is a big one. Is there a partner program set up? And as partner folks begin newer roles in those situations, how do we quickly enable the sales folks to understand where we play in the market? How do we not take a revenue share from them? How do we incentivize?"Paul: "There is an element of breaking bread with somebody and having a conversation, telling stories, and developing that trust and relationship because it starts to open those doors."Connect with the guests through the links below:Reed (LinkedIn) - https://www.linkedin.com/in/reedlclarke/Paul (LinkedIn) - https://www.linkedin.com/in/pkchadwick/About Josh Wagner: Josh is a growth advisor and the host of the Love Selling Hate Sales podcast. In 1986, Mike Richardson, a comic shop owner in Milwauikie, Oregon launched Dark Horse Comics with the release of the appropriately named Dark Horse Presents, a black and white anthology comic that would change comics forever, and I honestly mean that. Within a few short years, Dark Horse comics would be a force to be reckoned with the comic industry, producing some of the greatest comics the world has ever seen. With mature, compelling stories from some of the greatest comic creators in the world, Dark Horse published an incredible package of graphic storytelling that pushed the comic book medium into new territory. Whether it was licensed properties like Star Wars, RoboCop, Aliens, Predator, and the Terminator. Or creator owned comics from comic legends like Paul Chadwick’s Concrete, John Byrne’s Next Men, Frank Miller’s Sin City, Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, Mike Baron & Steve Rude’s Nexus, Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo, or Eric Powell’s Goon. Dark Horse comics produced the best comic books on the racks. And so I'm here to celebrate that rich 35 year comic publishing history in podcast form! Welcome to another episode of Dark Horse Presents, the podcast that celebrates Dark Horse’s 35 rich years of publishing comics here on the KSCGSF feed. Review & Recommendations. Link to paper to follow on 14th December 2020.This is an incredibly important paper that Hertfordshire County Council will share widely to support the use of behavioural science in creating messaging to maximise uptake of the vaccine in the general population by supporting professionals across the system.Click here for other Herts County Council COVD-19 Behavioural Sciences Resources. At the time of recording, the vaccine is being rolled out to the most vulnerable & most exposed, however these groups can also be the most likely to be hesitant to uptake the vaccine due to information and time limitations.Stu and guests discuss the content of the paper - research on increasing uptake methods, data on previous vaccinations in pandemics, barriers to uptake & surveys on current COVID vaccination hesitancy. Paul read Uzumaki, and Sean read Tomie, both by Japanese comics creator Junji Ito. It is horror in the strange, disturbing sense of the genre, so we rave about his work. Before that, however, Sean talks about his Target adventure to find the new Cobra Island G.I. Joe Classified figures. It is an "old men being sad about toys" story, but with a happy ending. Also, Paul shares his love of the Technodrome with his son.- Mushroom coffee vs smoothie- Non-Licensed means more articulation- A Saturday Night Live skit came to life- Waiting in Target is something nobody ever wants to do- Poor Roadblock gets to hang from the pegs- Micro Machines return! Were you in that micro toy generation? - Paul is a serious collector, but mostly out of laziness- We've got a grocery list of recent comic pick ups- What does horror have to do with professional wrestling? We know...- How a slower pace is a better pace - The horror of Junji Ito is like Concrete by Paul Chadwick in a particular way- Age Of Apocalypse illustrates the danger of binging- The build up to Avengers Vs. X-Men left a lot to be desired when the main event rolled around- We have some gripes with Marvel, and we share them- We also have a lot of good things to say about HoXPoX and the new X-Men line at Marvel- Plus, one more positive thing to say at the end

This episode is dedicated to my grandfather, Paul Chadwick. We recorded this episode so that my family can have a lasting memory of who he is. A gentle soul, he grew up in Massachusetts, then moved to San Diego and played drums at local venues. He loved racing and even competed in quite a few events himself. Later in his life he built a house on Fishhawk Lake, and wakes up every morning knowing that he is loved. I hope you'll enjoy this one, and I'll see you soon.

Paul Chadwick's Concrete has the trappings of a superhero story—a quiet, somewhat nebbishy man finds his brain transplanted into a giant stone body that allows him to do great things. But like a number of other similar titles from the early 80s like Nexus and Zot!, it spins this well-worn concept into something new, intelligent and wholly original. In his first four issues (as reprinted in Concrete Vol. 1: Depths), former senatorial speechwriter Ronald Lithgow uses his newfound abilities to rescue miners from a cave-in, attempts to swim the Atlantic Ocean, and recounts his familiar yet freshly horrifying origin. This chip off the old block may be able to hold his own against unfathomable aliens and undersea predators, but can he survive the unspeakable menace of the man known only as Anonymoose? And can he reach the summit of that pinnacle of comic-book excellence known as ... The Comics Canon? In This Episode! Not another unscrupulous NPR reporter! Comic book worlds don't come any more vividly imagined or painstakingly detailed than Astro City. The metropolis that gives this anthology series its title isn't all that different from the one outside your window—you know, except for all the high-flying heroes, insectoid invaders and mystical menaces that share the sidewalk with everyday citizens like you. Life in the Big City, collecting the first six issues of this long-running series, allows the reader to imagine what it would be like to live in a world of magic and wonder. Will the super-powered Samaritan ever be able to slow down long enough to enjoy life, or go on a date? Can a young woman from the ethnic neighborhood of Shadow Hill trade her talismans and traditions for those of the city's bustling downtown? Plus, we have plenty of time left over to explore Strange Tales II, Dark Horse Presents #1 (featuring Paul Chadwick, Frank Miller, Neal Adams, Richard Corben, Carla Speed McNeil, Michael T. Gilbert, Howard Chaykin, and more), Finder, 28 Days Later, Pete Bagge's HATE Annual #9 from Fantagraphics, a pair of Image Comics' recent color-themed books in Green Wake #1 by Kurtis Wiebe and Riley Rossmo, and Blue Estate #1 from Viktor Kalvachev, Andrew Osborne, Robert Valley, Toby Cypress, and Nathan Fox, Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog, Free Comic Book Day 2011, Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard's Super Dinosaur #1, Tom Scioli, and a whole mess more!
