Been sitting on this one for a while. Not that I am not happy with it, but the previous mix was just phenomenal! ;) A little moodier with this one and playing around with stepping down through the keys - which I think again creates a more 'swampy' mix instead of an upwards progression. Guns & Suicide - an uncomfortable conversation.

This is a segment of a conversation with the legend that is Mike King. I have had some thoughts about the subject brewing in my head for the best part of a year now and was keen to start talking to some people about the subject. Mike King was a logical first choice – his work relates to it, though we (the firearms community) have their own take that needs to be discussed. I am hoping to talk to a few other subject matter experts from all sides of the fence on this and create a bit of a mini-documentary – but also looking to include the chats separately as I record them – the intent is to stimulate more discussion about the subject. Thanks to Mike for listening to me take a very long time to introduce this subject – as I mention in the video – I have a firearms licence, I have a dealers licence, and I go and see a therapist semi-regularly – I intend to see one more regularly as the year gets underway. The point is, if you feel that talking to someone would be beneficial – hopefully way before thoughts of suicide even enter the discussion, then please, do so. It's a tragedy to think that blokes are not asking for that help until it's too late. It has been a while since I caught up with him - and though an end of the year, state of the nations catchup would be good. I have seriously enjoyed watching Rusty and his many projects grow and grow. From the Podcast to the huge amount of video content to the PRS Competitions – Rusty has been working his arse off growing the Precision Shooting community in Australia. We have spoken before, and popped up on each others shows once or twice – so I thought it would be a good idea to catch up to discuss how shooting in Australia (and NZ) has been growing over the last year. We need to be working with kids, parents, people, all of us, to help us ever get to the point where we ever really even need to seriously think about self-harm. It shouldn't even enter our conversation - as we should feel the support, love and self-worth the lets us know we have value on the planet, in whatever way we choose. And what a mission it is. In my talk with David Benefell, we talked about the necessity of men (and everyone really) to have a mission. It's really hard to get passionate about anything if you don't know what it is you want to get passionate about. Mike knows what he is passionate about. Helping kids. I am happy to simply help do whatever I can to amplify his message. In 2020, in Aotearoa 119 young people died by suicide and it is estimated another 3,100 tried to take their own lives. While Government agencies are doing their best, some kids are stuck waiting up to six months to receive the counselling they so urgently need. IAMHOPE.CO.NZ

Ah. The Filterbrats. What happens when you take a Black Metal drummer and songwriter and a Minimal Techno Music Engineer – A Filtered French Disco Duo. Of course! I originally met Clayon many, many years ago playing at the Papakura sound bowl. He was playing with the band, I was the in-between-bands-DJ. By memory, the set I played involved a lot of Orbital and borderline Ambient. He was playing hard metal. We kicked it off, started hanging, started mixing tunes (we have a mutual love of The Prodigy) together and eventually started writing tunes together. We often found ourselves playing the ‘B' room of Hard House gigs (the style Clayton initially mainly DJed. Our sets were a mix of tunes heavily influenced by the Daft Punk / Crydamoure / Le Knights style from France. Though – I think half the fun was just keeping each other on their toes by dropping in something unexpected (at least, that was generally my plan – I was playing for Clayton more than the crowd). There is a couple of albums worth of material online – you can still purchase it via Beatport and other sources – and we licenced some tunes for inclusion on a Game – which resulted in a humourous interaction between Clayton and a ripped tune uploader on Youtube. The mix though is a combination of our songs and others. Dub music means different things to different people. My introduction was, I think, through the likes of Smith & Mighty – certainly my introduction was by way of Techno – so I lean more on the sparse, deep and moody side of things compared to what I would call Reggae Dub – ‘skank' with more organs, guitars and references to ‘Ja'. I guess, to me, Dub is the Delay – dark, modulated delays that conjure the image of a ‘mad professor', maybe even THE Mad Professor sitting at a mixing desk using the sends to push audio into a Roland Space Echo or some old guitar pedal, back through the desk and riding the faders into eternity. Anyhow – the mix is a bit of that, a bit of techno and a few other things as well. I thoroughly enjoyed making it, I hope you enjoy listening to it. Feedback loops, data gather, mindfulness behind the rifle, all these relatively new terms are really providing modern names for something that has always been true. If you pay attention, have an intention, and train and shoot accordingly, you will improve. What Chris is doing reminds me, in a way of Thomas Hauglands THLR Proficiency challenge – another great test that humbles shooters but provides a real-world representation of this shooting ability. Thomas's test requires distance though, while Chris's only needs 100m/y and provides you with a real-world baseline, irrespective of what position you should it from. It also happens to be a fantastic 12 round drill for shooting. A really, really productive day at the range with a box of ammo could be 3 rounds to confirm zero, 12 rounds for the challenge, focusing on a specific skill that you need to import on, then 3 rounds at the end, for well, whatever you want. Have some fun! I realised we didn't go deep into the test itself – but – for that – I suggest you just pop over to the Rifle Kraft site and read up for yourself – https://riflekraft.com/ As part of my upcoming prep for the Tarata Teams match – I am going to go through this test and see where we can improve in the limited time, with limited ammo. Realistically, a lot of this is going to be done with a 22LR – as projectiles for the 6mm Creedmoor are going to be limited. However – regardless, I strongly feel this is going to be a transferable skill – and will be checking in with Chris again after I have a couple of targets uploaded to his site. Stay tuned! Another mix. Though - I still face a little bit of a conundrum with this one - because I am not sure if I should call it a mix or a construction. I recently picked up a small midi controller, which came with a copy of Ableton Lite - so this was 'constructed' within there. Ableton allows me to be a little more creative with speed changes and 'optimise' the phrasing on where tracks come in and out. So, while more technically 'better' - the mix could also be a bit more convoluted and miss some of the impromptu magic that mixing on turntables can provide. I am going to hook up the midi controller and set up a mixer mapping - so I can pre align the tracks but actually lay down a 'live' mix over the top of it. We shall see... maybe we can get a good mix of both. Follow me over on my site - kerry.co.nz - more mixes, music, brain farts. #turntables #djmix #housemusic You might also like thebloke.co.nz

This one took me two goes to record. The first was a mess. However, as it says in the title. I figured it out. I was trying to hard. Or - I was trying to inject too much of myself into the mix and make it more complicated than it really needed to be. It dawned on me, out of a little bit of respect to the music I was playing - which, ironically, I was playing because I liked it in its original form - I didn't need to be in the mix every single moment, showcasing how technically I can work a fader and eq. I just needed to do the minimum to get from one track to the next, and, put a little bit of myself in there as a 'signature' when it seemed appropriate. As a result, I quite like this one! Enjoy! Not much to say on this one. A bit of a ropey mix. It does, however, include one of my favourite audio illusions - a risset tone - also known as a rising tone. A modular producing a risset and a 909 could almost be the perfect track for me. Maybe with an 808 breakdown.

About three mixes in I came up with the description for this one. It takes a sharp left turn and I am still not 100% sure how I ended up where I did. It was also one of those odd mixes where I didn't feel 100% in control at most points - tricky mixing, with a tricky direction leading to a sense of being in the mix, but at the same time just watching it unfold in front of me. MIX - Not Bad

'Not bad' was my thought about halfway through this mix. It started off wrong - about a mix in I canned the recording, took a step back and started again. I guess I was trying too hard. I was trying to shoehorn something together that was 'intellectually smart' but musically just not going to work. I started again. Let the first track decide what the second track needed to be, and went from there. I am focusing more and more on getting out of the headphones and doing as much work as possible in the monitors. Remembering that I am still manually beatmatching - so it's sometimes a case of some rather aggressive pitch fader riding to get things in quickly and keep them there. It's interesting, but noticeable, that once you get into the monitors, listening, not looking at waveforms, not overthinking 'how' things should sound - that they often sound better. Our human senses do seem to work better than digital replacements sometimes. It might not be as 'digitally perfect' but its more pleasing, at least to my sensibility. I am aware that there must be a generation of DJs out there, and likely listeners that would pull a sour face at the first sign of a mix going out of time/step. But to me, that's still the human element of mixing. All the great mixes I still listen to, have an aspect of hearing the actual person behind the decks/mixer/system. Otherwise, it might as well just have been crafted in Ableton, perfect in every way. I like to hear a unique performance. Otherwise, I might as well do it myself. MIX - Hold On

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 30, 2020 50:05

Hold on because this is a bit of a ropey one! I enjoyed mixing this one. It's a style of mixing I get into - drop the record, push the faders up, sort it out in the mix. It might not result in the smoothest, cleanest mix in the world - but you know there a human behind the decks, not just an algorithm. I swing back and forward on the 'method of mixing' and what is DJing and what isn't. I started on the 1200s and Vinyl, but have done CD's, controllers only, and for that matter, even a live PA featuring an 808 and 909 (actual, not emulations). It's really a different method, which results in a different, well, result - and to me, also creates a separate vibe. Big room, epic, prog house for example - makes perfect sense to have a controller, like Sasha's original Maven, glitchy minimal, Monolake and the MonoDeck, but I think bumpy house, fast and snappy techno (Jeff Mills, Dereck May, etc) decks and the push and pull of an analogue interface just appeals to me. While the controllers allowed a lot more in regards to loops, effects, visually lining up breakdowns and drops (mixing by numbers), I always also missed a little bit of the unexplainable groove of two decks slightly slipping in out around each other - I suppose some people would just call that bad mixing these days! Like drummers trying to play along to metronomes, or being inspired by computer-programmed beats and trying to emulate them - there is no denying there is a strong digital influence to a lot of this music, but I think there is still a place for a slightly non-perfect, human element in its presentation. I guess it's a party mix? Maybe good for some point on New Year's Eve. Maybe, whatever floats your boat I guess.

    MIX - I Never Stopped

I was a little surprised when I started mixing again. I expected to struggle a bit with the beatmatching - having not done it for quite some time. Much to my surprise, I didn't have that much of an issue. I got pretty much back into the groove with the expected rollercoaster of keeping a mix in sync. I have always had this, as most DJs do mixing vinyl - it's not digital, so there is a little wow and flutter in every mix. I guess though, I never really stopped mixing. I would often hear music out and about and be mixing something else into it in my head, my Spotify playlist often just resembled set planning. I still can't sit anywhere that I can hear two different audio sources out of sync and be able to do anything other than try to marry them together in my head. So. With this mix, I turned off a feature in Serato - the key lock. I have always struggled a bit with mixing in key. I am not a formally trained musician, so I never really learnt the theory or have intentionally practised identifying key. I can certainly hear if something is sour, or off-key in a mix, and I think I can identify someone singing sharp or flat - though - I couldn't tell you which it was. So, as the software systems came into play, a feature I jumped on was indexing everything by key - using the Camelot Mixing system. It certainly helped my mixing, but just in the last couple of weeks - since I had the system back up and running, something has been bugging me - a certain mussyness to the sound. I did this mix with the feature off. I increase or decrease the speed of the record; the pitch also changes. This does mean that mixes might not be entirely in the same key it means tracks may not be in a 'traditional' key at all - a percent up or down can change things - go read about the backstory of 'Kind of Blue' to see how this can become part of a legend. https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/miles-davis-kind-of-blue-mono-speed-issues.232772/ So - you may have a slight mismatch in regards to the key. Instinctively, in this age of metronome perfect mix by numbers mixing - this probably has a few people aghast - why would you turn such a useful feature off? Well - try listening to the audio, listening to the mix. Close your eyes for a while, stop looking at the waveform and listen. The early version of Serato incorporated Pitch'n'Time into it - actually - by my understanding - it's this software that got Serato started. Now, I am not sure if the later versions got upgraded algorithms, but, I find, listening to the sonic characteristics of the audio - I feel (and, yes, it could merely be an auditory illusion I am creating for myself) that there is a slight marring and smearing of the sound. Logically, if there is any wow or flutter on the analogue controller (vinyl), the plugin must be all but permanently correcting the sound. Add into it, a bit of pushing and pulling on the platter, and you end up with a mix that seems to have a bit of a background, almost rubbery characteristic. It's not the music itself; it's in between the music - behind it that I hear the issue. Additionally, much like manually beatmatching itself - there is something in having two tracks in the mix that are not 100% perfectly aligned - the slight, slight disharmony helps create a tension in the mix, that resolves when finally transitioning to the next tune. Tension and release, what, to me, a lot of DJing is really about. Anyhow. Another mix. Enjoy!

Mindfullness and mixing. I have been undertaking a mindfulness practice for the last year or so - following Sam Harris, listening to his many talks and using the app for a 10 minute session each morning. This isn't the first time I have had a 'meditation' practice. As a young man, I trained in Yang Tsin Su and Tai Chi fairly intensively for a few years. By intensively, I mean I was up at 4:30 to head into town for an hour of training, then an hour of meditation. After work, there was an hour odd at the gym. Most days, except Sunday. Interestingly, at this time, I was also eating as a Vegan. This, as my memory serves was a time of extreme mental clarity, if not constant physical tiredness and I still remember being able to 'observe' my mind literally slowing down in front of me as I headed away from the practice. During that time, I experienced a few things that I would still struggle to explain logically, potentially resulting from a mind and body and intent all perfectly in line with each other. Mixing, specifically beatmatching, now that I am getting back into it, has reminded me of what a mindful practice it can be. The act requires you to follow two separate beats and actively keep them in line with each other. This is a practice that requires constant attention and attentiveness. It requires you to certainly, be, here, now. Like life, you occasionally falter - and interestingly, it's often when you doubt yourself that the mix goes out - was that track getting ahead or behind? That self-questioning leads to nudging or pulling the wrong way, overcorrection and eventually settling back into the groove. However, that's not to say the mind can't actually wander a bit. Once things are locked in, or maybe because it does, I occasionally find myself dropping into a space between those tracks, in the mix - and there is actually a bit of room to wander around in there. Interestingly now, coming back to mixing, I do seem to be a little less self-critical of those moments slipping out of the mix - I understand them, I enjoy them, I find myself listening back and cheering myself on during the little bumps. Something I hope I also get better at doing in my real life. Christmas Day 2020. My little girls are off with their mother now for a couple of days, and I do find myself already missing them. I also found that the mother of some old friends passed away yesterday. So much like the rest of the year, things are moving on with a bit of a strange undertone to them.

Yes. I am definitely enjoying having decks back. This mix is a combination of new and old tunes. Tech/House/No? I have always felt that DJing, in its purest sense, was simply an expression or amplification of the mixers state of mind. I have always tried to hold to that ethos - so my mixes have generally been a reflection of the mood/mode I was in at the time. To be blunt, I mixed to show a part of me, not for others. People get to come along on my journey, I am not just trying to produce a background soundtrack for their evening/life out. It's communication, not wallpaper. I am generally happy with the mix. The Herbert tune in the middle, in traditionally Herbert style is awesome, but weird syncopation and drum programming makes it a challenge to mix into, and, by my reckoning, I managed to mix out of it on the wrong beat as well. Which didn't help. I am just going to tell myself that he threw in a 3/4 bar or something. ;) Anyhow - the mix is a bit all over the place, but at the same time, the themes are clear. Breathe. Work. This is the way. kerry.co.nz
