The Triggernometry Show - Practical Shoooting - Long Range, Multigun, Pistol, Reloading and More!
This one took me two goes to record. The first was a mess. However, as it says in the title. I figured it out. I was trying to hard. Or - I was trying to inject too much of myself into the mix and make it more complicated than it really needed to be. It dawned on me, out of a little bit of respect to the music I was playing - which, ironically, I was playing because I liked it in its original form - I didn't need to be in the mix every single moment, showcasing how technically I can work a fader and eq. I just needed to do the minimum to get from one track to the next, and, put a little bit of myself in there as a 'signature' when it seemed appropriate. As a result, I quite like this one! Enjoy! Follow me over on my site - kerry.co.nz - more mixes, thoughts, brain farts. Mixed on a pair of 1200 mk5, with a Rane TTM57SL, Serato Scratch Live and recorded onto a Zoom F4. Generally one take - if it goes truly pair shaped, I just take a step back then start again. #turntables #djmix #housemusic You might also like thebloke.co.nz

About three mixes in I came up with the description for this one. It takes a sharp left turn and I am still not 100% sure how I ended up where I did. It was also one of those odd mixes where I didn't feel 100% in control at most points - tricky mixing, with a tricky direction leading to a sense of being in the mix, but at the same time just watching it unfold in front of me. 'Not bad' was my thought about halfway through this mix. It started off wrong - about a mix in I canned the recording, took a step back and started again. I guess I was trying too hard. I was trying to shoehorn something together that was 'intellectually smart' but musically just not going to work. I started again. Let the first track decide what the second track needed to be, and went from there. I am focusing more and more on getting out of the headphones and doing as much work as possible in the monitors. Remembering that I am still manually beatmatching - so it's sometimes a case of some rather aggressive pitch fader riding to get things in quickly and keep them there. It's interesting, but noticeable, that once you get into the monitors, listening, not looking at waveforms, not overthinking 'how' things should sound - that they often sound better. Our human senses do seem to work better than digital replacements sometimes. It might not be as 'digitally perfect' but its more pleasing, at least to my sensibility. I am aware that there must be a generation of DJs out there, and likely listeners that would pull a sour face at the first sign of a mix going out of time/step. But to me, that's still the human element of mixing. All the great mixes I still listen to, have an aspect of hearing the actual person behind the decks/mixer/system. Otherwise, it might as well just have been crafted in Ableton, perfect in every way. I like to hear a unique performance. Otherwise, I might as well do it myself. So. I turned 42 yesterday. Not sure what to make of that. To be blunt, it's been a bit of a shit year, and last year wasn't a whole lot better. It's been a bit of a struggle in regards to finances, work, not-work, relationships and a multitude of things coming together, resulting in a general state of stress and lack of sleep. Still figuring what to do now, to be honest. However, I also recently picked up a set of decks and have been enjoying getting back into mixing. SHORT VERSION OF THE STORY I had applied for the dream job - international demonstrator/educator for Native Instruments Traktor - was in the top three for the role. Now, if you know the DJ work, if you know a little bit of me, you might have a bit of an inkling how big that was to me. I was in Germany in the time, so perfect to pop into the NI offices for a chat and opportunity to present myself. Some truly average planning on the part of the person doing the hiring at their end meant that, despite the unique opportunity of me being the country, down the road (relatively) from the offices, they couldn't organise for me to come in and say hello. It went downhill from there. Needless to say, it left me frustrated, a bit bitter, and somewhat cynical of the industry on the whole. It kind of also signalled my departure from the DJ/Producer world - as I had managed to turn my hobby/passion into a job (of sorts) and then been cut off at the legs just at that final step. DÉJÀ VU Yup. Different details, similar feeling right at the moment. ANYHOW, THE MIX. Yes, I am aware it's basically a Skeptical / Alix Perez (who is/was living in NZ I believe?) Mega-Mix. I basically am going to grab a couple of new tunes every week off Beatport, so these mixes are likely to be my first mix of new tunes, and will likely all follow a certain trend. Maybe. THE TRACKS Are, I think, called dark rollers - clipped buzy and harmonic; "damaging yet delicate tracks". I trace my main interest in Drum & Bass, preference in sound-wise, to Ed Rush & Optical's Wormhole - I had kinda nicked the Vinyl Album off my then partner, DJ B-Line, and would basically mix back and forth through the tracks on there. Quick development in the sound (Tech-Step/NeuroFunk?) would lead into it become a bit of a caricature of itself in the form of Noisia and of course, Pendulum, which sort of co-insided (to me) with the development of Electro-House (not Electro) and making things bigger and bigger, more and more obvious. However, at the same time, Skeptical and the like were pulling things back into what I guess/think was called Drum-Step? I don't know... it all got a bit confusing. I am sure I have just butchered several genres and offended purists—whatever, not likely reading this anyhow. THE KIT So - Rane 57 - Serato Scratch Live, running out the analogue into a Zoom F4. The resulting file was rather harsh and digital in the top end, so I did a quick master (via Resolve of all things) and ran it through a Tape Saturation Plugin and worked on rolling the top end off a bit. Something in the chain is imparting a rather harsh digital sound to the recording - still - 100% better than the previous mix that was via Serato's internal recording. THE MIXING Mostly happy with it. 2/3 in the track comes in rather large and loud - not sure if I had adjusted the booth output just before, but regardless, the gain was a little high. Remembering that Serato Scratch Live is the old version of the software - so grid-matching, beat-sync etc doesn't exist. It's the good old fashioned vinyl beat matching here. The final mix is a bit of a stretch - but - the drum patterning is a bit complex - so the syncopation that does happen is more jarring than I would have liked. However, the drum programming is very cool in the track itself! Want more of me? kerry.co.nz

Sorry, not shooting content - this one is a mix! It’s been a while. Like, over a decade since I recorded a mix. And, yes. It is something I have missed. Mixing was always a duality for me – it was relaxing, in a mindfulness, meditative way – focusing on beatmatching (keeping two tracks in sync both on tempo and structure) is a concentration exercise that I found helped centre me sometimes in the now. At the same time, it was a frustration – as, like I suppose many DJ’s – hear the moment a mix goes out – even though others might not. My particular style of DJing likely doesn’t help either – I have always been very big about ‘sorting it in the mix’ – putting the upfaders up and forcing myself to be very public about the mix – letting people hear what is going on. This is a result, I guess of listening to the DJ’s I did – Jeff Mills (check this out for the best instructive DJ video of all time IMHO) and Derrick May being key examples, where they let you hear the ‘workings’ – not every mix is perfect and you get to go along with them in the process. It’s the process of DJing that always really appealed to me – hearing what was going on behind the decks and mixer, the ‘third track’ as many of us would refer to it as. As such, and because this is the first time I have touched decks in over ten years – there is a few clangers. Pots and Pans, a term used for Drum and Bass because of the amount of hi-hats and snares – if a mix goes out, it becomes fairly obvious quickly. Anyhow – just a short mix – and I will be trying to put a few more up and sharing them here. This was mixed on Serato – I picked up a second hand 57 (mk I) which limits me to Serato Scratch Live – the old software – but that is fine by me. I am going to have a play with recording setup – as the resulting mix does sound a bit shit. I am not sure if it’s the old MP3s I was playing (maybe the conversion has gotten better over the years) or it’s the internal recording in Live, or it’s the AIFF to MP3 conversion I did – regardless, I hear it, I will work on improving it! This mix is simply some random tunes I picked out of the old tunes I have – I was intentionally playing with moving up and down in the ‘energy’ side of things – NuroFunk/Tech-Step sorta things. Enjoy!

"If God was a DJ, he damn sure used Serato! -Fan When it comes to reinventing an industry, AJ Bertenshaw knows his stuff. In 2004, AJ and his partner. Stephen West, launched Serato Scratch Live, a technology that would revolutionize the very industry that provides the brick-and-mortar soundtrack to music enthusiasts and partygoers all over the planet. For DJ'ing this meant, going up against hard core vinyl purists, cd spinners, and their fans. That was 2 million registered users ago-- which includes the likes of Jazzy Jeff, A-Trak, DJ Premier, Z-Trip, and more. Now he's at it again. This year, Serato launched Pyro, the company's first consumer app, which allows anyone to DJ... like a DJ via their mobile device. On Innovation Crush, AJ dishes on the company's early days as an insular tech platform, the unexpected turns as an entrepreneur, and how he took over the world, one turntable at a time. seratopyro.com/

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement.Minimal & Tech HouseAbout João Paulo João Paulo had his first contact with eletronic music by the age of 15, at Dr. Smith club. Everyone in town knows for sure the club’s story and its reputation to always bring the main international attractions to Rio de Janeiro. One of the club’s owner was his oldest brother, so, he was familiarized since he was a kid with the dancefloor, which made him become part of that universe. Ten years after, already grown up and comfortable at the set, João Paulo has ended up by owning the pickups and has become a resident at three carioca parties: Bootleg, Mínima and Loading. With nothing but three years of career, the DJ has already participated of the Creamfields Festival in Rio de Janeiro, the Chemical Music Festival, Paz Eletrônica, Xxxperience 100º edition, Tribe, and has already played at the following parties: Burn Energy Music, Nokia Trends Mob Jam, Tim Verão at Ipanema Beach, RBK Tops, Ballantine’s Impress and Ipanema Stereo Beach 2007/2008, representing Bootleg. In 2007, João Paulo has gone beyond the national fronteers and played at We Love Brasil, at the Carlton Hotel and at Bass Walk Records, at the club Pawl Shop, during the Winter Music Conference 2007, in Miami. Right after the conference, the DJ left to the south of Brazil, where he opened the project Life is a Loop at the club Warung, in Santa Catarina. Besides these gigs, during the Skol Beats 2007, he was invited to play at Pacha, at the party We Love Sundays. At this time, João Paulo shared the pickups with great Brazilian names of the electronic music, such as Gui Boratto, Life is a Loop, Mary Zander, Maurício Lopes, Mau Mau, Leo Janeiro, Flow & Zeo, among many others. Remarkable international artists also share the set with him. In this team, DJs like Fat Boy Slim, Booka Shade, Deep Dish, Tiga, Miss Kittin, Laurent Garnier, Josh Wink, Benni Benassi, Christian Smith, Martin Eyerer, Steve Lawler, Serge Santiago, Thomas Schumacher, Format B, Tim Healey, King Unique, Spirit Catcher, Luke Dzierzek, Tobias Lutzenkirchen are together, just to mention some of them. DJ João Paulo’s style varies among techno, tech house and minimal. At the beginning, house and electro were the first influences in his sets, basically due to his brother’s sound and also because of the vocals and mixes at that time. In Winter Music, 2006, the DJ met the minimal deeper and fell in love with this music gender. Artists like Format B, Audio Fly and Trentemoller became therefore his big influences. At the beginning of 2007, he incorporated techno and decided to add those beats in his sets. Nowadays, João Paulo doesn’t like to be considered from a specific style and his case goes from house to minimal. Another big characteristic of the DJ is his big interest in technology, mostly towards to musical universe. João Paulo researches not only music, but also last generation software like Final Scratch, Traktor DJ Studio, Serato Scratch Live and Ableton Live. The result is a vast knowledge of mixing techniques and an increasing number of tools to build songs. And the effect of it, we can see it on the dancefloor.
