Aujourd'hui, ce n'est pas un jour tout à fait comme les autres dans la petite histoire de Tsugi Radio… Tsugi Radio, webradio du magazine Tsugi, démarrée en octobre 2015 avec un ordinateur, beaucoup de rêves, pas beaucoup de moyens et zéro business plan… Nous avons grandi, avons ouvert un studio dans la Folie L1 du Parc de la Villette, avons agrandi les équipes, sans rien changer à notre passion de découvrir des artistes et de la nouvelle musique, à notre envie de parcourir les festivals inlassablement, jusqu'à 32 en 2025. Mais aujourd'hui, Tsugi Radio, n'est plus seulement une webradio. À Paris, en région parisienne, à Nice, Cannes et Marseille, depuis ce matin, vous pouvez écouter Tsugi Radio en DAB+. Qu'est-ce que le DAB+, et bien c'est la radio numérique, qui est appelée prochainement à remplacer la FM, comme la TNT a remplacé la télévision hertzienne. Pour nous écouter en DAB+, il faut une radio DAB+, il en existe de toutes les gammes et pour toutes les bourses. Et sachez que les voitures commercialisées depuis décembre 2020 en France en sont obligatoirement équipées. Nous avons toujours considéré Tsugi Radio comme une vraie radio, même si elle n'était disponible que sur le web. Mais c'est aujourd'hui sans doute encore un peu plus vrai qu'hier. Indépendance, c'est la valeur cardinale que le festival Nuits Sonores défend ardemment depuis 23 ans à Lyon… ce qui n'est pas sans présenter son lot de challenges. Mais l'événement lyonnais parvient à résoudre cette impossible équation avec élégance et curiosité. En mettant à l'honneur des artistes ukrainiens, colombiens, en accueillant le soundsystem de la légende Mad Professor, mais aussi avec Juan Atkins, Leftflied, 808 State, Anetha, Kittin, Four Tet et toujours ce soutien à la scène et aux collectifs locaux. Aujourd'hui dans Place des Fêtes, on va passer un coup de fil à Pierre Zeimet, un des programmateurs de Nuits Sonores. Au programme aussi la cabine des curiosités de l'ami Alexandre Berly qui viendra nous expliquer la différence entre phaser et flanger pour celleux d'entre vous qui aiment triturer les effets sonores. Pour les autres qui préfèrent la lecture, on a rendez-vous dans l'espace littéraire avec Nicolas Jalageas, notre libraire des Cahiers de Colette. Hier une drôle de faune se dirigeait vers l'Accor Arena de Bercy. La messe un dimanche soir pour les fans d'indie music de tous âges avec le concert de l'Australien, Kevin Parker, plus connu sous le nom de Tame Impala. Grosse scéno avec des barres de lights multicolores, motorisées dont les mouvements et les lasers n'étaient pas sans rappeler la scénographie de la dernière tournée de Justice ou le duo avec Lewis, leur ingé light historique, qui est devenu une influence pour d'autres, comme on se le disait hier soir avec Pedro Winter. Si Pedro était là, c'était bien sûr parce que dans la surenchère de proposition que sont devenus ces grands concerts, il fallait bien une tête d'affiche française pour faire la première partie de Tame Impala. Xavier et Gaspard, aux platines pour un megamix puissant et généreux avant pour le premier titre du rappel de monter sur scène pour jouer Neverenderrer, un des deux featurings de Kevin Parker sur leur album, Hyperdrama. Beastie Boys' Anthology: Sounds of Science, Michael Diamond (Mike D) says: “We had all been influenced by Lee Perry's productions. We were into how on reggae recordings there would often be a ‘dub version' on the b-side of a single, a practice that got co-opted by a few punk and early hip-hop singles as well.” Who knew? When their debut “License To Ill” was released in 1986, almost 40 years ago - it was fresh and had a great sense of humour, playfullness that on the surface could be disregarded as white-boy rap, but if you took a close listen you'll notice the attention to detail in the music - the use of sampling, 808 Drum Machine, experimentation, mixing and overall production - this was groundbreaking. The lads and Rick Ruben had crafted something unique that had not been done before. In 1985, it was Run-DMC, Schoolly D, and LL Cool J, but by 1986, hip-hop had begun to transform, and part of that was due to this release. They'd pulled together all the elements of their musical inspirations, Run-DMC, WWF Wrestling (Rick Ruben is a known superfan of the sport), The Clash, Dub, Punk, along with a frat-boy, teenage FU attitude. They'd taken hip-hop to a level while still paying homage to those they'd learned from, borrowed from, sampled from and absorbed. Within the following year, you'd have more groundbreaking releases from Boogie Down Productions, Marley Marl & The Mighty Public Enemy. On their 1998 album Hello Nasty, Lee Perry is on “Dr Lee, PhD. Perry's fingerprints are evident: spring reverb, echo throws, and that cosmic feel only he could bring. They also collaborated with Mad Professor (the recording in question is the unreleased dub instrumental album that Mad Professor and the Beastie Boys made, presumably at some point between the releases of Ill Communication and Hello Nasty) from Beastiemania.com. Dub has woven its magic thread throughout so many styles of music, not to mention launching entirely new genres via direct inspiration and use of dub techniques and sampling, that we shouldn't be surprised to see that same link with the Beastie Boys. On today's show we welcome a legendary artist, producer and label owner who has had a pivotal role in the development of UK bass music. Adrian Sherwood is the man behind the 'On-U Sound', a label that helped popularise Reggae, Dub and Industrial music in both the UK and world wide. 'On-U Sound' brought us the likes of Dub Syndicate, African Headcharge, Gary Clail and many more as well as giving a platform to some of the greats of reggae including Mad Professor. His production and remix work has put a dubbed out spin on the likes of Sonic Boom, Halsey, Lee 'Scratch' Pery and Horace Andy. As an artist he formed groundbreaking Industrial act 'Tackhead' with Keith LeBlanc and produced Bristol punk legend Mark Stewart during his creative peak. His new album 'The collapse of everything' celebrates his relationship with LeBlanc & Stewart through bass heavy dubbed out excursions into leftfield music. Ensemble donc, ils proposent une certaine vision du dub, qui réinvente l'inattendu: le post-dub. Si les techniques de traitement sonores inhérentes au style demeurent : mixages évolutifs, échos, réverbérations et basses fréquences quasi palpables, les sources anglo-jamaïcaines du genre ont bel et bien été remplacées, re-conceptualisées, recomposées, réécrites. This Saturday, we have Cairo-based DJ Azzouni with a special mix that's a little bit of everything from outside the club, packed with touchdowns in various sonic territories from Jamaica, Nubia, and Capo Verde, just to name a few. One of the most riotous DJs and producers in Cairo's underground electronic scene, Azzouni is known for his signature genre-hyphenated experimental sets, mixing ambient, breakbeat, grime, jungle and deconstructed club sounds. Instead of a traditional mix, Azzouni dug deep into his sonic library to bring us more of a three-hour, 33-minute and 33-second playlist, chasing joy outside the club vibes. The playlist is inspired by a recent trip Azzouni made to a pristine natural beach in Wadi El Gemal protectorate, called Ras Hankorab (which is currently facing a threat of being turned into a luxury resort. The set is a patchwork of various sounds that skate across swaggering funk, dub reggae, blues, jazz, and everything in between, featuring a thoughtfully curated selection of eclectic tunes by the likes of Ali Farka Toure, Mad Professor and Sharaf Band. As Azzouni puts it, “Drop in at any timestamp, and stick around if you like the vibes.”

"I embarked on the Migration Sounds journey with the intention of working solely with field recordings. Yet, when I stumbled upon this recording of two Moroccan musicians in the medina of Marrakech, playing the guembri and singing, I was captivated. "The simplicity of the bass line, the repetitive vocals, and the background chatter punctuated by bursts of clapping and laughter all contributed to a mesmerizing and immersive experience. Inspired by Mad Professor's philosophy that "every song could be dubbed," I set out to create the dub version of this recording. Drawing from the roots of dub music and its ability to fragment and reassemble soundscapes, I aimed to capture the essence of migration through sonic exploration. "Through my dub interpretation, I sought to invite listeners on a transcendent journey, where the boundaries between cultures dissolve and the shared human experience of migration comes to the forefront. Just as dub music has migrated from Jamaica to influence global musical landscapes, my dub version of the Marrakech hostel recording resonates with the universal themes of movement, adaptation, and transformation." For those of you who don't know, our host started his career as a vinyl Dj collecting Jamaican 45 rpm records he bought in the many record stores around NYC. Then comes the dub, some B sides and versions, including the legendary Lee “Scratch” Perry's ‘Dub in Peace' and the likes of Mad Professor and Lone Ranger. This Guyanese-born, British dub producer and engineer makes music that is a reflection of how he sees the world, which is to say, he sees people and places as deeply connected, deeply mixed, and he sees that who we are now carries reverberations of our ancestral roots. Brown & McWatt, 2005), a brief sample of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires' “Jamaica Ska” (Kentone Records label, 1964), and a deep listen to Mad Professor & Jah Shaka's “Beyond the Realms of Dub” (Ariwa Sound Studio, 1982).
