In this electrifying episode of Jack Dappa Blues, we sit down with the powerhouse that is Honeychild Coleman—a pioneering force in the world of punk, blues, and avant-garde music. A Louisville native and Brooklyn-based artist, Honeychild's journey has taken her from busking in the New York subway to collaborating with legends like The Slits, Mad Professor, and Greg Tate's Burnt Sugar Arkestra. As the frontwoman of blues-punk outfit The 1865, Coleman fuses raw energy with historical narratives, crafting sonic landscapes that echo the struggles and triumphs of Black American culture. Her music has graced films, documentaries, and television screens, all while staying true to her ethos of artistic resistance and community empowerment. In this candid conversation, Honeychild delves into the intersection of punk, blues, and Black identity, sharing how her lived experiences and sociocultural activism inform her art. From her early days in the underground NYC music scene to shaping spaces like Sistagrrl Riots, she continues to be a trailblazer for alternative Black voices in music.Join us as we explore the roots of rebellion, the power of storytelling through sound, and the unapologetic spirit of punk blues. This is an episode you won't want to miss!Honeychild Coleman (The 1865 / Bachslider / The Phensic) Brooklyn, NY Louisville, Kentucky native recording/visual artist, and Sistagrrl Riots founding member Honeychild Coleman has worked with The Slits, Mad Professor, afro-futurist shoegazers Apollo Heights (The Veldt), Badawi (Raz Mesinai), Death Comet Crew (with Rammellzee), and the late Greg Tate's Burnt Sugar Arkestra. Honeychild started her musical career during the hot summer of 1993 in the real underground – the New York City Subway system. Busking there, and eventually performing freestyle and improv weekly sets with DJs Olive (we™ /Liminal), Sasha Crnobrnja (Organic Grooves), Lloop (we™), Delmar (Jungle Sky), Fred Ones (Mike Ladd/Sonic Sum) and Badawi (Raz Mesinai) contributed to the unique niche that Coleman created within the New York City electronic scene of the mid-90's.She is featured in documentaries “Afropunk,” (James Spooner, USA), “Tina Turner:My Life. My Songs“ (Dir. Schyda Vasseghi, GERMANY), the MAKERS storytelling platform for trailblazing women (USA), "Fireflies" and "Getting My Name Up There" (Katarina Cibulka, AUSTRIA), Rock Chicks:I Am Not Female To You (Marita Stocker, GERMANY), and upcoming “Rude Girls” (Brigid Maher, USA). Coleman also made a cameo in Brooklyn film “Crooked” (Wordsound, USA) and has composed music in the Sundance awarded film "Pariah" (Dee Rees, Focus Features, USA) and indie short “P.R.” (Maria Paraskevopoulou, U.K./Greece). Coleman fronts Blues-Punk outfit The 1865 (Mass Appeal Records) on lead vocals and baritone guitar. The 1865's music is in the Hulu series “Woke!” (USA, 2021) and composed an original song for Showtime's “Everything's Gonna Be All White” (USA, 2022). Coleman's writing appears in RAZORCAKE ‘zine issue 138 and BLACK PUNK NOW! (Softskull Press,2023). "I embarked on the Migration Sounds journey with the intention of working solely with field recordings. Yet, when I stumbled upon this recording of two Moroccan musicians in the medina of Marrakech, playing the guembri and singing, I was captivated. "The simplicity of the bass line, the repetitive vocals, and the background chatter punctuated by bursts of clapping and laughter all contributed to a mesmerizing and immersive experience. Inspired by Mad Professor's philosophy that "every song could be dubbed," I set out to create the dub version of this recording. Drawing from the roots of dub music and its ability to fragment and reassemble soundscapes, I aimed to capture the essence of migration through sonic exploration. "Through my dub interpretation, I sought to invite listeners on a transcendent journey, where the boundaries between cultures dissolve and the shared human experience of migration comes to the forefront. Just as dub music has migrated from Jamaica to influence global musical landscapes, my dub version of the Marrakech hostel recording resonates with the universal themes of movement, adaptation, and transformation." Musicians in Marrakech reimagined by Andrii Shamanov. Part of the Migration Sounds project, the world's first collection of the sounds of human migration. For more information and to explore the project, see https://www.citiesandmemory.com/migration
Solving riddles is like a mental workout for your brain! It gets those gears turning and fires up those neurons like nothing else. Each riddle is like a little puzzle waiting to be cracked, challenging your problem-solving skills in creative ways. Plus, it's not just about finding the answer—it's about thinking outside the box and looking at things from different angles. It keeps your brain sharp and agile, kind of like doing squats for your mind! And hey, it's also a ton of fun—there's nothing quite like that feeling of satisfaction when you finally figure out the solution! #brightside Animation is created by Bright Side. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com Check our Bright Side podcast on Spotify and leave a positive review! https://open.spotify.com/show/0hUkPxD... This week in Bass Candy we have a reggae special. Almost in a chronological way, Tropico Beats starts with Coxsone and Studio One 7” records before paying tribute to perhaps one of his favorite artists ever, the great Bob Marley. For those of you who don't know, our host started his career as a vinyl Dj collecting Jamaican 45 rpm records he bought in the many record stores around NYC. Then comes the dub, some B sides and versions, including the legendary Lee “Scratch” Perry's ‘Dub in Peace' and the likes of Mad Professor and Lone Ranger. After playing some contemporary reggae music, and going into the Dancehall era, Tropico closes the special with Reggae's brother in arms, punk rock, with a live classic from Queens very own, The Ramones.Tune into new broadcasts of Bass Candy, LIVE, 3rd Friday from 6 - 8 PM EST 11 - 1 AM GMT.
My guest for the Season 10-opener is Neil Fraser AKA Mad Professor. This Guyanese-born, British dub producer and engineer makes music that is a reflection of how he sees the world, which is to say, he sees people and places as deeply connected, deeply mixed, and he sees that who we are now carries reverberations of our ancestral roots. Press play to learn more! This episode features my reading of Guyanese poet John Agard's "Pan Recipe" (Oxford Book of Caribbean Verse, ed. Brown & McWatt, 2005), a brief sample of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires' “Jamaica Ska” (Kentone Records label, 1964), and a deep listen to Mad Professor & Jah Shaka's “Beyond the Realms of Dub” (Ariwa Sound Studio, 1982). It is with a heavy heart that I dedicate this episode to Jah Shaka. Rest in Power.
Ben Cardew welcomes dub legend Mad Professor, a man who has worked with everyone from Lee “Scratch” Perry to Sade, onto Line Noise, ahead of his performance at the Jazztronica festival in Barcelona this weekend (April 22, 2023). They talk about the inspirational Scratch, remixing Massive Attack, dub as social commentary, white privilege and the lasting impact of dub.

So honored to have my great friend Edica in the studio of sorts this week! We go way back to when I first came to Austin and she would help me promote shows and do SXSW things and all this, while she would work with cool artists like Houston's The Nice Guys and Dallas legends SoreLosers. She has always had her ears to the streets and when she made her transition into DJing she immediately began experimenting with sounds and releasing mixes that were jamming and outside the box. Her ability to mix hip hop and dance musics with more ethereal sounds has always been her signature and I think was a natural thing for her. Hailing from Corpus Christi, Edica made the move to Brooklyn some years ago and really dove into the scene and became a resident DJ of Brooklyn Dub Club and Hi-Fi Social Club, and started her own dope online radio show series Dub & Effection which goes in a million different directions while keeping the dub steady as she goes. She is a top DJ who is a part of the Dub-Stuy movement but thankfully is now dividing her time between NYC and Texas so we get to see her more now. She most recently tore down Flamingo Cantina in Austin opening for Mad Professor and has a beautifully bright future ahead for sure. Check her out in the summer of 2022 if you are in Mexico City, Minneapolis, London, DC and more as she spreads her sounds around the world.
