La Seconde Guerre mondiale a été un terrain d'expérimentations militaires parfois absurdes. Parmi les projets les plus saugrenus figure sans doute le Project X-Ray, ou « bombe à chauves-souris ».L'idée naît en 1942, aux États-Unis, dans l'esprit du dentiste et inventeur amateur Lytle S. Adams. De retour d'un voyage au Nouveau-Mexique, il est frappé par la quantité de chauves-souris vivant dans les grottes de la région. Ces créatures, minuscules mais nombreuses, capables de voler dans l'obscurité et de se faufiler dans les moindres recoins, lui inspirent un plan aussi audacieux qu'inattendu : les transformer en armes.Le principe est simple — du moins en théorie. On attacherait à chaque chauve-souris une petite charge incendiaire au napalm, placée dans une capsule légère. Les animaux seraient largués par milliers au-dessus des villes japonaises, connues pour leurs maisons de bois et de papier. Les chauves-souris, à l'aube, iraient naturellement se réfugier sous les toits et dans les charpentes. Puis, les détonateurs à retardement déclencheraient des centaines d'incendies simultanés, rendant les quartiers entiers incontrôlables pour les pompiers.Le projet fut présenté à l'armée et, contre toute attente, accepté. Des tests furent menés en 1943 sur une base militaire du Nouveau-Mexique. Et c'est là que la situation prit une tournure comique : plusieurs chauves-souris s'échappèrent accidentellement, déclenchant un incendie… dans les installations mêmes de la base américaine ! Les hangars et même une voiture furent réduits en cendres.Malgré ce fiasco, les chercheurs poursuivirent les essais. Les résultats démontraient que l'idée, bien qu'inhabituelle, pouvait fonctionner. Un rapport militaire estimait même que le Project X-Ray aurait pu détruire une grande partie de Tokyo « plus efficacement que mille bombardiers ». Pourtant, le projet fut abandonné en 1944. La raison ? Il avançait trop lentement, et entre-temps une autre arme « révolutionnaire » accaparait toute l'attention et les budgets : la bombe atomique.Avec le recul, Project X-Ray reste un symbole de l'imagination parfois débridée qui règne en temps de guerre.
