Episode 89 of the Women Om Wisdom podcast is the place where I'm going to pause for a few months. In this episode, I talk about why, and it's exciting. As I'm choosing to be intentional about how I show up for myself and others and how I live my values, it feels like the right time to take a step back in a number of areas so I can take a step forward in a priority area. Perhaps something similar is coming up for you. If so, consider what it would be like to indulge yourself. I look forward to greeting you again with the next episode in the summer of 2022.
Kasandra Gandara, Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Las Cruces, NM was my guest on Facebook Live on Tuesday, March 8th. Wow, do I feel grateful to have connected with her. A few months ago, I discovered that Las Cruces had elected the first all-female city council in the city's history. In this episode, we discuss the significance of this new and exciting reality, including the all-too-familiar challenges. You'll hear about how this new council is leading, communicating and collaborating, and what they're focused on accomplishing during this term. We reflect on what would be different if half of all elected positions globally were occupied by women. In addition, Kasandra offers her thoughts on how to get more women running for and elected to public office. Finally, Kasandra shares how she defines success at this point in her life and what she's looking forward to in the next year, personally and professionally. In recognition and celebration of International Women's Day on March 8th, I'm absolutely thrilled to share with you the voices of 24 incredible women sharing the wisdom they've gained from the experiences of the past year and what they're looking forward to in 2022. I am grateful to know these insightful, grounded, generous women, each in their own ways helping other women come into their power on our shared journey of bringing about a kinder, gentler, more just and compassionate world where all people have the opportunity to reach their potential.
Success in any endeavor usually begins with planning and preparation. You can get lucky once in awhile and have something turn out beautifully by winging it. That tends to be the exception, of course, and not the rule. What I know for sure is that when I take the time to map things out – to give myself adequate time to plan and prepare, the process is much more enjoyable and the end result feels more grounded and of higher quality. If you're a procrastinator, consider making the adjustments highlighted in this episode.
Nancy Gries, CEO of Coti Vision™, and her business partner, Julie, launched their company in 2019, with a desire to make reading glasses and accessories that inspire women to be bold and celebrate their unique personalities. Nancy is bold, she's an innovator, she encourages and supports other women and celebrates their success. In this episode, we explore Nancy's career progression and how she decided to start her own company, including the joys and challenges along the way. We also discuss her experience of making a pitch to potential investors on Dragons' Den, the U.K.'s version of Shark Tank, in April 2021. What a courageous, exciting, and terrifying adventure! We also talk about Nancy's perspective on work-life balance and how having a passion for your work may disrupt that balance from time to time. Perhaps that's not only okay, but necessary. Finally, Nancy shares what she does for fun, how she relaxes, what she does for self-care, and what she's looking forward to in the next year. In this episode, we'll explore the Wheel of Life Exercise, which helps you zoom out and create a visual for how satisfied you are currently with eight dimensions of your life, as well as to describe your ideal. It's mid-January, and I'm guessing you're right back into the swing of things at work and at home. Before we get to the end of January, I encourage you to build white space into your year so that you can be intentional about reconnecting with yourself over and over again in ways that support what you'd like to accomplish or realize this year. There's so much noise in the world. There's a lot of noise in our homes and workplaces, too. Whether it's your smart phone or the television or music or whatever else clutters your mind. When you want to reconnect with yourself, it's helpful to have space that's just for you, away from all the noise. It feels good to give your nervous system a break, to not have to engage or respond to anyone or anything. To be able to watch your thoughts float by or to journal to help you make sense of it all. Take care of you and you'll be better able to take care of others. For access to the core values exercise mentioned in this episode, click here ~ https://upbeat-artisan-1055.ck.page/
It is my belief that millions more women and girls coming into their power will bring about a kinder, gentler, more compassionate and just world where all people have the opportunity to reach their potential. That is the purpose of the work I do; that is the purpose of this podcast. To encourage and support women in listening to their wisdom and owning their power. If you have the same belief, let's do this work together. The work of building self-confidence, of taking risks, of being vulnerable, of reaching out and connecting with and supporting other women. The good work, the important work of owning our individual and our collective power.
In this episode, you'll feel Natasha's deep desire to make a difference. She talks about the importance of volunteering and activism in her life, which give her the opportunity to be part of making her community more welcoming and safe for everyone. We talk about what drew her to her current professional roles, and how her education and life experiences have shaped who she is and where she chooses to direct her time and energy. Over the past 10 years, Natasha has been getting more in touch with her Pakistani side. She shares what that exploration has been like for her and, as a result, what she's learning about herself in the process. We concluded with Natasha sharing where she's a work in progress and what she's looking forward to in the next year.
Whether you feel that everything is going smoothly in your life or not, there comes a point when it's clear that you want something to be different. The question is what exactly is it that you want to be different? Most of the time, it isn't going to happen overnight. Getting there requires thought, planning, a series of steps, and probably help from others. In this episode, I share an example of one thing I wanted to be different and the steps I took and continue to take on that journey. When you reflect back 6 months or a year from now, what will be different in your life because you were intentional today about taking action to move in that direction?
I have no doubt you will be inspired after listening to this episode with Darian Kaderabek. As an advocate and an activist, Darian is passionate about what's important to her, and she is also a gentle spirit. What a great combination for making a positive difference in peoples' lives. In this episode, we talk about mental health, the support of her village, where she looks for inspiration, self-care, how she gets centered in the middle of a busy or chaotic day, and so much more! We concluded with Darian sharing what she'd like to accomplish in her career and what she's looking forward to in the next year.
As we get closer to the holidays, you might be thinking about things you're grateful for, the people in your life, the experiences you've had, whatever brings you joy, even the things that are difficult but have helped you grow. When we think about being grateful, it's usually, but not always, for things outside of ourselves. What if you were to turn that gratitude inward? What are you grateful for about yourself?
I have this lovely room in our home where I meditate and practice yoga. The walls are painted a soft lavender, and a beautiful bamboo plant makes it feel like nature has come indoors. There are two windows with no window dressings, so the light of the moon and sun offer natural light and another connection to nature. A mandala floor covering that sits atop the carpeting is the first thing I see when I enter this sacred space. This is a great time of year to set up your own sacred space, where you can be and not do. Where you can slow down and reflect and take a deep breath. In this episode, I talk about the benefits of having your own sacred space and ask you to consider what yours might look like ~ what helps you to feel grounded? ~ what's peaceful and healing? ~ what needs to be in your sacred space for it to feel like home to you?
There are two months remaining in 2021. It will be January 1st before you know it. With many things converging at this time of year, how can you stay present to enjoy the unfolding over the next couple of months and also plan for next year in a way that feels right for you? In this episode, I'll ask you to explore what you want, what will feed your soul and allow you to stay present as this year comes to an end? And how will you communicate that with the important people in your life? As you think about next year, what are the things you're looking forward to experiencing or accomplishing or getting started? How can you set yourself up for success now?
There's a delightful exuberance and a grounded feeling that comes through in this conversation with Julie Grossman. Julie is a native of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin who moved to the west coast and lived there for 20 years before returning to her hometown. We talk about a career path that she didn't expect, what she learned and the ways she grew over the course of those 20 years that continues to serve her personally and in her role as CEO of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA. There were many ways the YMCA adjusted to meet the needs of the community during the height of the pandemic. Julie shares how they were able step up in ways big and small in order to be there for kids and families during what was a stressful and scary time for our communities, our country, and the world. Julie is a believer in creating the community you want to live in. We explore some of the ways she does that, including through work and through volunteering. We concluded with Julie sharing what she'd like to accomplish over the next part of her career, where she's a work in progress, and what she's looking forward to in 2022.
Have you noticed how easy it can be to get drawn into negativity? There's a lot going on in our communities, in our country, and across the world that can grab your attention and keep you stuck there, if you allow it. We are each responsible for the energy we bring into a room, into our relationships and our lives. The way we show up affects everyone in our sphere. In this episode, I share some things to consider for redirecting your energy, when needed, to shake off negativity. Be intentional about bringing the best of you to your relationships and your life.
Every now and then, throughout my life, I've had the experience of sharing something with a friend or acquaintance and asking them to keep it to themselves, but instead they've shared it with someone else. You've been there, haven't you? Hopefully, we all learn over time who can be trusted and who can't. It's not to say you shouldn't be friends with someone who can't keep things to themselves, but it's probably a good idea to not give them information that you want kept in confidence. Are you someone who keeps things in the vault or are you someone who broadcasts? In this episode, you'll hear my take on why it matters.
You'll hear so many powerful nuggets of wisdom in this episode with Heather LaFond. You know those days when it feels like anything that could go wrong does go wrong? When you wake up and immediately stub your toe or spill coffee on your shirt right before you're ready to walk out the door? We've all been there. When you have “those” days, it's easy to chalk it up to...oh, it's just a bad day; there's nothing to learn here. I'm asking you to reconsider. In this episode, we talk about using the way things happen in your life as an opportunity to notice, learn, and grow. The magic is in taking the time to stop, breathe, and surrender, if only for a moment.
I was recently talking with a friend about projects we're each working on, mostly around writing weekly content or updating content we wrote years ago. There's something very cool that we both realized in updating old content. It's a similar kind of realization as when you look at old photos of yourself. In this episode, we talk about how the past offers a perspective you might not expect. Sometimes, it shows up without necessarily being invited and opens your eyes. You get a glimpse of wisdom that can change how you see yourself and help you focus on what's really important.
When you're feeling stuck, how do you get yourself unstuck? For me, it's about taking some kind of action. That may seem obvious, but it isn't always easy to do. Consider setting aside 5 or 10 minutes today or tomorrow to zero in on an area where you're stuck and ponder the questions I suggest in this episode. When you do take action, even if it's a baby step, you're creating momentum. What step will you take today to shake off that stuck feeling and move toward what you want to accomplish?
There's a feeling of change in the air; we're starting a new month, kids are going to school and we're just a few weeks away from the official end of summer and the beginning of fall. Another significant change that's become evident in my coaching with women, especially during the past six months, is a shifting of priorities and how women want to approach their work. In this episode, we talk about getting clear with yourself about what you need so you can be your own best advocate. How do you want to better align with your values in a way that serves you, that serves the business, and that helps you to feel fulfilled in your life and in your work? If you're a manager, there are ideas for you in this episode, too!
What a delight it was to talk with Vicki Updike for this Women Om Wisdom episode. Vicki is the president and founder of New Sage Strategies, a women's leadership development company in Appleton, Wisconsin. Several years ago, Vicki left a job she enjoyed to start her own company. We discuss how she made that decision, as well as the opportunities, challenges, and learning she's experienced along the way. Vicki is clearly a sincere and powerful advocate for women. She shares her approach to helping women leverage the leadership lessons and barriers they've experienced to help them learn and grow and reach their full potential. Vicki is the creator of the Women's Leadership Academy, which is a virtual leadership course for women. In addition, a few years ago, she launched the Women's Leadership Conference, focused on educating, encouraging, and inspiring women to take their careers to the next level, with the support of other women. This year's conference will be held on October 7th in Green Bay, Wisconsin. There's still time to register at https://womensleadershipwi.com/. Have you ever had the experience of someone apologizing to you or explaining something they said or did and you have no idea why they would be even be concerned? Whatever it was they said or did, you haven't given it another thought, but they've been worrying about how they came across to you ever since. I'm guessing you sometimes, or maybe often, worry about what people think of you too. In this episode, we address what's true in these situations so you can quiet the self-critical voice and calm the worrying. As the brilliant author Regina Brett would say…it begins with reminding yourself that “what others think of you is none of your business.”
If you were to reflect on the past five years, three years, the past year, what would you notice about who you've been becoming? If you're generally happy with the decisions you've made, and with who you are today, what has been key to your growth? If you're not happy with how you've chosen to evolve, you can change it. The past doesn't have to be your future. You can choose differently moving forward. In this episode, there are five things I ask you to consider as you think about who you are becoming and how you want to get there. One year from now, when you reflect back, how do you hope you will be different? How will you have grown? Be intentional about how you proceed.
What's something you've been working on or creating or that you've been thinking about doing for some time now, but you're not making any meaningful progress on it? It could be that it's really not that important to you or it could be that you're simply stuck and not sure how to move forward. In this episode, we explore how recruiting your own accountability squad get help get you unstuck~ it's two or three people (or more) to serve as your sounding board and help hold you accountable for making progress on that important project you've been working on or thinking about working on. With the steps provided in this episode, you'll have a roadmap for clarifying what you want to accomplish and recruiting your ideal accountability squad to help you get there.
Adventurous is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Juliet Kosarzycki. Mastery is another. Inspiring yet another. I'm curious to see if you walk away with the same feeling after listening to this episode. Juliet has visited 49 countries and will be visiting her 50th this year! When considering a new quest or new approach, her mantra is “I'm somebody who…(fill in the blank)"…can and will practice for and run a marathon, enjoys trying new foods in different countries, looks forward to climbing to the peak of a mountain. She believes that the Universe brings to her what she's asking for and is, therefore, thoughtful about her requests. And SO much more. In this episode, you'll hear Juliet's positive and uplifting energy. Through her way of being in the world, she unintentionally, or maybe intentionally, challenges others to shake life up a little, try new things, explore, discover, and enjoy more adventures. What feelings come up when you think about being silent with yourself and creating space for silence in conversation? We have a tendency to fill our days with activities and to multi-task because ...there just aren't enough hours to get everything done... leaving little to no time to be still, to be with ourselves, with our thoughts and with our emotions. We also have a tendency to fill the silence in conversation with others. In this episode, we explore a different approach as well as what happens when you give yourself the opportunity to get comfortable with silence and with not having the answers. There is a wonderful sense of freedom and insight within that stillness.
A couple of weeks ago, when I was grocery shopping, I noticed that I had this rushed feeling like I needed to get done with what I was doing so I could get on to the next thing. Only there wasn't a next thing; I was simply going home and putting the groceries away. I noticed that same thing while taking a shower and getting ready afterward, and while making and eating breakfast, that rushed feeling. It was a reminder that I want to be fully present in my life and that means being intentional about slowing down. How about for you? What's your indication that it's time to slow down so you can be more present in your life? What are the things that start happening? In this episode, I share some things to consider when you can sense that it's time to take a step back so you can just be.
When someone is retiring or moving on to another job, we write notes and cards, maybe send flowers or take someone out to lunch. We compliment their work or how their kindness made a difference. Perhaps let them know we'll miss them, and hope that we'll stay in touch. What if we made the same effort before someone is on their way out? What if we made it a practice to share with others what we respect and appreciate about them? Your sincere words of appreciation will make a difference. You might even create a domino effect, where the person you compliment is inspired to do the same for someone else. Put a little kindness and gratitude out there in the Universe on a regular basis. You'll make someone's day and, in the process, be part of making the world a better place.
If you're a planner, if you set goals at the beginning of the year, it's time for a midyear review, and maybe a reset. Whether you've made significant progress or taken baby steps, it's all okay. The question now is ~ what do you want to continue doing or do differently over the course of the next 6 months? In this episode, we focus on strategically using your calendar to help you make progress toward your goals so you can celebrate success at the end of the year. Remember, if nothing changes, nothing changes. Moving forward requires intentional action. Let's do this!

After more than a year of working from home through the pandemic, engaging in work is never far away. It's right there on your laptop or your phone. It's blended into your home life. Even as people are going back into the workplace, technology makes work ever present, so it's important to have boundaries, to be able to turn the work off at the end of the day, put it aside and enjoy your personal life. We know work-life balance is pretty darn important for most employees. It ranks second only to compensation. In this episode, I share 10 ideas for how you, as a leader, can set an example for healthy work-life balance. First, it's helpful if you truly believe that it's important, both for quality work outcomes and for your own and your employees' health and well-being. https://teamstage.io/work-life-balance-stats/

We're talking about advice. It's one of those things we like to give, but don't always like to receive. It's so tempting to give advice, but in the end, it feels better to put that desire aside, to be fully present, to listen, and to walk alongside someone ~ rather than lead ~ as they find their own answers. In today's episode, we focus on how to help others discover their own expertise to solve a problem rather offering up advice. Most often, the best way for you to help is to start with the knowledge that you don't need to have the answers and to be genuinely curious and ask open-ended questions that can help the other person get clarity.

June is Pride month! It's about recognizing the impact that the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community has had locally and across the world. It's about being inclusive and honoring others for who they are. We all want that for ourselves ~ for others to honor who we are, invite us in, and recognize the ways we contribute to making the world a better place. In this episode, I share a brief history of Pride Month and the 1969 uprising that led to the gay rights movement. It's a reminder that you can unfairly and unjustly push people only so far before they start to fight back and demand that they be respected as fellow human beings. Together, let's continue to lead the way in recognizing and honoring others for who they are and seeing our own humanity in one another. https://www.loc.gov/lgbt-pride-month/about/ https://www.history.com/news/stonewall-riots-timeline https://www.britannica.com/story/how-did-the-rainbow-flag-become-a-symbol-of-lgbt-pride

What a fun conversation in this episode with writer and sculptor, Liz Reed! Liz lives in the Washington, D.C. area and is the co-creator, with her husband Jimmy, of the mixed media comic Cuddles and Rage. We talk about their newest book, Bites of Terror, which is 144 pages of horror comics starring anthropomorphic food. We also explore her approach to the creative process, what it's like for her to work with her husband, how she transitioned from working for someone else to working for herself, and much more. Liz reminded me, in such a beautiful way, that we are all creative and it can feel really good to let the artist within come out and explore from time to time. Have you ever gotten yourself all tangled up in the giving away your power words of "I need to", "I have to", or "I should" do something? Those words can make it seem like you don’t have any control or you have limited control over your actions or your choices. What if you were to replace them with more empowering words? In this episode, I offer up a challenge that can help you make that shift.
Have you ever gotten yourself all tangled up in the giving away your power words of "I need to", "I have to", or "I should" do something? Those words can make it seem like you don't have any control or you have limited control over your actions or your choices. What if you were to replace them with more empowering words? In this episode, I offer up a challenge that can help you make that shift.
Do you have a to do list? Things to do today, this week, this month? Are there some items that you keep moving forward from day to day, month to month? Are there things that have been on that list for months or longer? The things hanging out on your to do list may be out of sight, but they’re not out of mind. They take up space in your thinking and they take up energy because you know they’re still there and need to be done. In this episode, I share two approaches to deal with the overwhelm so you can start making progress and checking those items off of your list.

We celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May every year. Three women are credited for bringing Mother’s Day to life: Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Anna M. Jarvis. For them, Mother’s Day was about better health, peace, love, and improving the lives of others. It wasn’t about gifts. As a result of their efforts from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill in 1914 designating the second Sunday in May as “Mother’s Day”, a day to celebrate all mothers. Some of the details of their journeys are shared in this podcast. In this episode, we’re talking about understanding and meeting the needs of introverts; such a misunderstood group. We can look around and see, feel, and hear that we live in an extroverted world, but 30-50% of the population are introverts, so whether you work with or live with an introvert, it’s important that we understand their needs and how to best interact with them.
