She discusses having a baby during the Covid lockdown and how the experience informed her song-writing. Vengeance is award-winning journalist and writer Saima Mir's second novel, and the sequel to her crime thriller debut The Khan. The book continues the story of Jia Khan as she's fighting to keep her position at the head of a crime syndicate her father created, and as the mysterious corpses of men begin to appear around the city. Saima joins Anita in the studio to discuss writing a British Asian crime family, creating the characters she wants to read, and why sisterhood is at the heart of her new novel. The mother of a 16 year-old-boy who ended his life after becoming the victim of a sextortion gang says the tech giant Meta has taken too long to hand over data which might help the investigation into his death. Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when thousands of Allied troops landed on beaches across Normandy, marking the start of the campaign to liberate Nazi-occupied northern Europe. Natasha Khan Kazi shares Moon's Ramadan, a debut picture book and modern holiday classic capturing the magic and meaning of one of the world's most joyful and important celebrations.   BOOK DESCRIPTION: Moon's Ramadan by Natasha Khan Kazi Page Length: 40 pages Ages 4 to 8, Grades P to 3 With radiant and welcoming art, this debut picture book and modern holiday classic captures the magic and meaning of one of the world's most joyful and important celebrations. It's Ramadan, the month of peace, and Moon watches over Ramadan traditions with excitement and longing in this sweetly illustrated debut. In Egypt, India, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates, in Somalia, New Zealand and Indonesia, in Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States, children and their families do good deeds in honor of those who have less. Cleverly blending glimpses of different countries' celebrations with the corresponding phases of the moon, Moon's Ramadan makes Ramadan, one of the world's most widely celebrated traditions, accessible and exciting for all readers.    NOTABLE QUOTES: (6:54) “[Ramadan] feels light because everyone's on their best behavior, hopefully, and trying to be kind and trying to be patient.” (8:07) “[Ramadan is] all about feeding the other person first”  (10:06) “It was one of the top three best experiences in my life because small children are so…  They're so open-minded. They're so honest. And they felt the joy that our family felt. And they like, they just met us there in that place of joy.” (10:38) “When I wrote and illustrated this book, I really hoped that other Muslim kids would feel proud, but I also wanted their friends, um, to support them and be even better friends.” (17:46) “Veil means a cloth that covers the head. And I am surrounded by smart, strong Muslim women who wear something called the hijab, which is a veil that covers the head, including my mom.”  (18:31) “Since I knew the story was gonna be from the point of view of Moon, I wonder what she was thinking in that moment when twilight was happening and she was slowly appearing to the world. She might feel like she's a little veiled and that no one has yet noticed her, but she is noticing everyone.” (20:55) “I feel in our heart that we are all, no matter what you believe, we are all different types of bread. And the bread itself is the same. I think we all believe in compassion and kindness, but it takes different forms and we practice that form in different ways.” (21:52) “They say sometimes when you illustrate, you have to draw the world as you want to see it. And this was really one of those moments.” (22:47) “Go and read other Ramadan books because every perspective is different. And I love that you would read my perspective, but there's a lot of perspectives out there.” (23:18) “Always stay curious, open-minded and honest. When we learn from each other, we learn something about ourselves. I want you all to look around the room and see that we are all unique and that's a beautiful thing. Same is boring. So please be proud of your identity.”   ADDITIONAL LINKS: Natasha Khan Kazi Website - www.natashakhankazi.com Purchase the Book - Moon's Ramadan IslamiMommy - IslamiMommy   TALK ABOUT THE EPISODE: What phase is the moon in as you look up in the sky tonight? How would you describe it? When will the new lunar cycle begin? If this was your first time hearing about Ramadan, what details can you remember that Natasha shared? If you observe Ramadan in your family, what are some of the traditions that you and your loved ones practice? What are some of the things you most look forward to throughout the month? Who are some of the people with whom you celebrate? Natasha reminded us that a main focus during Ramadan is practicing acts of kindness. What are some ways you could show kindness in your classroom? They discuss his work for Netflix crime drama The Serpent, whilst also diving into Dominik's journey into music and his career so far. With the Serpent, the majority of the series takes place in Bangkok, with the rest taking place in various locations, including: Hong Kong, Paris, New Zealand, and New York. Dominik composed a lot of the score on location in Bangkok and took inspiration from the urban, epic, and sinister feel that the city encapsulates. A portion of the score was recorded in Thailand – rhythm sections, drums, gongs, and other Thai instruments — all of which Dominik sampled to create more of a risqué sound to match the tone of the series. "Dominik Scherrer has created award-winning music for some of the finest film and television dramas in recent years. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for the critically-acclaimed series The Missing, and recently won his second Ivor Novello Award for his score on Netflix's Requiem, which he co-composed with Natasha Khan, aka Bat for Lashes." The Carpenters - brother and sister duo Richard and Karen - were one of the most popular groups of the 1970s. His outstanding compositions and her stunning vocals created several massive hits including We've Only Just Begun. Originally written as a TV advert for a bank portraying happy young couples embarking on married life full of hope, they loved it and released it as their third single in 1970. Karen's wistful voice gave the song a melancholy that has long resonated with fans. After her premature death from heart failure due to anorexia nervosa, the song took on an extra poignancy with lyrics like "so much of life ahead". Fans tell their stories about the song and how it relates to their own life journeys. For Professor Karen Tongson (named after the singer), We've Only Just Begun is about growing up in the Philippines where The Carpenters epitomised the American Dream. When she emigrated to the USA, the song became a metaphor for the immigrant experience. Nomad and writer Jeff Read remembers his childhood in a poor part of Los Angeles brought up by a single mother who eventually died homeless on the street. The song brings back memories of childhood optimism and his longing for a stable family life. Poet Abigail George recalls seeing a film about Karen Carpenter's life and identifying with the singer's struggles with an eating disorder as she herself had to cope with a difficult family life in South Africa. Retired policeman John Weiss was reminded of the song when he attended the death of an elderly person at a care home. John looked at the deceased man's wedding photos and was struck by the brevity of life. The singer Natasha Khan aka Bat For Lashes always loved The Carpenters and recorded her own version of We've Only Just Begun as part of an album where things don't end well for the young bride. Ironically, her version now features in a commercial for a British bank so the song has come full circle. Randy Schmidt is the author of Little Girl Blue (The Life of Karen Carpenter). In my view, today's guest has cracked the illusive 'balance' as a creative entrepreneur: she is both a fearless idealist creatively and a confident visionary commercially. Rachel Entwistle set up her eponymous jewellery brand in 2011. She splits her time between her store in Shoreditch and her home in Ibiza nestled among the orange groves. Quite a contrast. That love of contrast and travel is evident in her collections which are designed to connect people through history, symbols, nature and place. She counts Kiera Knightly, Florence Welsch, Natasha Khan and Russell Brand as private customers and has collaborated with exceptional brands such as Paul Smith. One of the many things that I admire about Rachel is the team that she has developed around her. She believes that growing a team is critical to growing a business and has done so in a considered and intentional way. She has raised up young talent, encouraged initiative and learning, released creativity and fostered a great company culture of belonging, trust and imaginative flair. I was so interested to hear how she has gone about it and I hope that you will too!Whether you are about to make your first hire or are building your own team of employees and freelancers, Rachel has a great point of view and has really reflected on this critical part of growing a business.
