Today we welcome Asm. David Tangipa, the freshman Republican legislator from the 8th Assembly District, and at 29, the youngest member of the California Legislature. Tangipa grew up off Watt Avenue in Sacramento, not for from McClellan Air Force Base. The impact that McClellan's closure had on Tangipa's friends and neighborhood left a lasting impression - and an awareness that policy decisions affected lives in very real ways. Sports offered a way out of the neighborhood; encouraged by his high school football coach, Frank Negri, Tangipa attended college at Cal State Fresno where he played tight end for the Fresno Bulldogs. Tangipa began working in real estate and got involved involved in Fresno politics, serving as a field representative for Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig. In 2024 he launched a bid for the open 8th District Assembly seat, challenging the favorite, former Congressman George Radanovich. Radanovich led in the Primary, but lost by 7 points in the general. Tangipa joined us to talk about his path to Sacramento, his extraordinarily short tenure on the Assembly Insurance Committee, and why he - the first Tongan ever to serve in the #caleg - is not part of the AAPI Legislative Caucus.Plus: Who had the worst week in CA politics?1:01 SB581 story2:35 Welcome Paula Treat and Matt Rodriguez3:31 Conferences coming: AI on July 8; Health Care on October 16:05 Welcome Asm. Special guests Rev. Jeff Sexton and Rev. Derek Mitchell joined Host Ber Bolton and Pastor Tonya Marks for this episode to talk about District stuff like Assembly, Ordination, and more! The older episode we referenced was S2E17, if you want to check that one out, too!
Today my guest is a candidate for 79th district assembly. She was born and raised in San Diego. She is a proud SDSU alum where she got her Bachelor's degree AND and her Ed.d in Education leadership. She is Aztec through and through as her mom worked at the school while she was pregnant with LaShae! We talk about dirty politics and transparency and we (mostly me) joke about an attack ad aimed at her, that I found silly. She is all about community, give a few cool little quotes I found inspiring and will probably steal them as my own in the future. She was a great sport and played along. We find out about her dreams and aspirations and why she chose a super sappy movie in the electric chair question.
Sherwin continues in his 4 District Assembly election talk while also reprimanding the Black community a bit. We have a responsibility to ourselves to be well informed and hold ourselves accountable. No more excuses or playing the race card, per Sherwin.
The couple so nice, we're doing them twice! That's right Angie and Ben of Union Park Tavern and Pavle's Lounge return to Ktown Connects. But we had a lot of new stuff to talk about and they brought a milk crate full of alcohol for us to enjoy, which resulted in some candid talk about why they bought a second bar (Pavle's Lounge, 1724 52nd St), Ben's recent foray into politics as a candidate for the 65th District Assembly (a position that has been held for many years by Tod Ohnstad = see episode 99, March 2023), and Angie's recent health issue which left her family and friends concerned for her as she sat in a coma for 10 days! https://www.siakaforassembly.com/. In this special episode being published just in time for the upcoming elections, Zena interviews candidate Siaka Massaquoi, who's running for District Assembly #43 here in the LA area. Meeting Siaka gave Zena much needed hope and encouragement given today's political climate, where things look grim to say the least. Having even one candidate you can believe in and support suddenly makes it feel possible to overcome the darkness that threatens us. And Siaka is a candidate who is ready to enter the fight. Zena wanted to introduce Siaka to any listeners who live in the LA area who might actually be able to vote for him, but who might not even know he exists. She also wanted to do something to honor the rallying cry of Christians, Conservatives and Republicans everywhere. We must vote. We must vote. We must vote. The time for sitting on the sidelines is over. Now is the time for us to turn this ship around... Before it's too late. #vote2022 #siakaforassembly For more information about Siaka, go to: https://www.siakaforassembly.com/Support the show
Matt Solomon has been an Eagle County resident since 1996. After dedicating 21 years of his life to public service, Matt took the bold step of becoming Western Colorado's candidate for the state Senate in District 8. As a candidate, Matt believes in individual freedom and liberties; and advocates for the safety and prosperity of Coloradans not just on the Western Slope but across Colorado. Matt's appreciation and understanding of real Western Colorado values and passions and his ability to bring experience and perspective from both the public and private sector is what makes him District 8's best choice for Senator. As has been noted by people from across the political spectrum Matt's wide-ranging background and interests lead them to say “Matt is Western Colorado. Matt graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina with a B.A. in Sociology. Matt also attained an A.A.S. from Colorado Mountain College in Paramedicine. Matt serves on the Board of Directors for two non-profits and was nominated for the 2021 Community Impact Award in Eagle, Colorado. After playing college football, Matt was a Professional Whitewater Kayaker and was one of the pioneers of SUP (stand-up paddle boarding) in the Continental United States. Matt is also a published author. His book Fortunate Accidents uses stories from Matt's life to teach lessons on personal growth and leadership. Matt's story is an example of not only how he strives to live everyday but is emblematic of his candidacy and how he will represent District 8 in the state Senate. Matt has spent the last 21 years in public service. He has proudly served his community and country as a paramedic, deputy coroner, through work as a civilian contractor with the United States military, and as a twice-elected Council Member for the Town of Eagle. Matt has a principled record of respecting private property owners' rights, fighting unnecessary tax increases, defending individual freedoms, and consistently making decisions within the limitations of the both the federal and state constitutions; all while listening to, respecting, and advancing, at times, competing ideologies for the betterment of the community and those living in it. After growing up working in a family business, Matt transitioned to adulthood by carrying the knowledge from his family into several private sector endeavors. Matt built teams and launched two outdoor sports industry companies internationally. He then started two of his own companies in Colorado – one of which, is the longest standing firearm shop in Eagle County. Matt's decades worth of experience leading both national and international companies taught him the power of fiscal responsibility and how to navigate the suffocating regulations of an over-reaching government When asked, Matt shares the credit with others. He was instrumental in many policies and resolutions supporting the Town of Eagle. He helped start the Eagle River Park as a citizen, then saw it through to completion as a Council Member. Matt also worked on creative solutions for Page 2 of 2 the Town of Eagle. This included the Town of Eagle's Climate Action Plan, short-term rental policy, and General Fund reserves. He was also the spark that created a unanimous approval for returning Council paychecks to the General Fund during the pandemic's shut-down of local businesses. After sweeping the vote at the District Assembly and winning the Republican Primary by keeping his opponent off the ballot, Matt is now focused on sharing this message of values with the High Country and Western Slope. In Matt's own words: “This is a huge district with many shared concerns. The safety and education of our children is paramount. We must also address the legislation passed by our current [majority party] representation that has contributed to the increased crime and inflation. Ensuring that actual Western Slope interests stop taking a backsea

In the political arena, underdogs are candidates who don't get many endorsements, they raise little money compared to competitors and they don't have much name recognition. People think underdogs are long-shots who won't likely win, but sometimes they pull out a surprise. Lori Saldaña is a self-admitted political underdog who joins podcast co-hosts Ry Rivard and Sara Libby this week to talk about her underdog status in the mayoral race, and her surprise win in a past race for state Assembly. Saldaña was a major underdog when she ran for Assembly. She said she won, in part, because the Democrats she was up against were too busy slinging mud at each other. "People said it was a circular firing squad of Democrats in that primary and I ducked," she said. Also on the podcast this week, Kevin Melton, a Republican candidate for the 78th District Assembly seat. Melton is running against City Councilman Todd Gloria — someone who's well known, has racked up endorsements and raised far more money — but Melton said he doesn't consider himself an underdog at all. "I'm able to relate with all sides and all people," he said. "So those people who need to come over who are fiscally conservative, socially moderate – they will vote my way." Melton said on the podcast that he has a slate of high-profile endorsements but that they'll stay secret for the time being. He also said that though he hasn't reported much money on campaign fundraising disclosures, that will soon change. After the podcast taping, Melton emailed a new list of endorsements: "Supervisor Bill Horn, Assemblyman Brian Jones, Councilman Scott Sherman, Coronado Councilman Richard Baily, the entire Republican Party Central Committee 78th Assembly District, Republican Federation of Women Coronado, Point Loma, La Jolla, Del Mar, Solano Beach." But he also said he has the endorsements of four "major people in the city" that he still can't share. VOSD's Lisa Halverstadt also makes an appearance on the podcast this week to shed some light on the race to fill Gloria's District 3 City Council seat. Candidates Chris Ward and Anthony Bernal are similar in a lot of ways. They've both said no to public funding for a new stadium for the Chargers and yes to a dedicated funding stream to fix the estimated $300 million of infrastructure needs in Balboa Park. The two have also invoked Gloria's image in their campaigns, even though neither candidate has gotten his official endorsement yet. Crazy Ballot Initiatives The Secret Ballot Voting in State Legislature Initiative is also a bit of an underdog to make the November ballot. The proposed measure wants legislators to be required to vote by secret ballot, thereby eliminating voting records and any method of understanding how our elected officials are doing their job. Favorite Things • Rivard's favorite thing is the California Public Records Act. During the Saldaña interview, the candidate brought up her complaint that someone with political motivations has requested her personnel records. Rivard said he likes the fact that anyone can file a public records request, and it shouldn't matter what the motivations are behind each filing, because the public deserves access to public files. The public, after all, is paying for them. • Libby's a USC alum, so her fave thing this week is the school's recent hire of Lynn Swann, a former professional football player, as athletic director.
